Gerald A Gaskell

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Gerald Allen "Jerry" Gaskell, 75, of Battle Creek died Dec. 29, 2001, at Battle Creek Health System.

He was born March 11, 1926, to Jesse and Gladys (Albaugh) Gaskell in Albion.

Mr. Gaskell grew up on Golden Avenue in Battle Creek and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1943, from the University of Virginia in 1948, and from Michigan State University in 1958.

He was a naval officer in World War II and the Korean War, retiring from the Navy Reserve in 1966 as a lieutenant.

He owned Oneida County Manpower Inc., in Utica, N.Y., and was an instructor and sponsor of Dale Carnegie courses for 20 years. He retired as a substance abuse counselor at Battle Creek Adventist Hospital.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary Club of Battle Creek, a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, the founding president and a member of the board of directors of the Alano Club of Battle Creek Inc. He was also a founding officer of the Institute for Learning in Retirement and attended many Elderhostel programs. He was a charter member of the Marshall Chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a member of the Civil War Roundtable.

His hobbies included golf, reading, learning and history.

He married Margaret (Sweet) Warren on April 15, 1978.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Jane Arquette of Newmarket, N.H.; sons, John Gaskell of Madison, Conn., Charles Gaskell of Columbia, Md., and Tom Gaskell of Clayville, N.Y.; stepdaughters, Mary Reitz of Midland, and Katie Nowicki of Grand Ledge; stepsons, Mike Warren of Sherwood, Rick Warren of Stratham, N.H., Tim Warren of Flower Mound, Texas, and Jim Warren of Battle Creek; 27 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, David Gaskell of Battle Creek; a sister, Marcia Mueller of Gainesville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

GASKELL - Gerald Allen "Jerry" Gaskell, 75, of Battle Creek, Mich., died Dec. 29, 2001. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m., Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Battle Creek, with the Revs. Joy Rogers and Christopher Yaw officiating. Interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich. Memorials to the Alano Club of Battle Creek or St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Shaw Funeral Home.

Lloyd W. Fiske

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Lloyd William Fiske, 86, died Dec. 2, 2001, at the East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills after an illness.

He was born in Northfield, Vt., on June 20, 1915, the son of the late Harold J. and Susie B. (Ditty) Fisk. It was Harold Fisk who added the "e" to his son Lloyd's birth certificate.

He graduated from Northfield, Vt., High School with the Class of 1933. He was introduced to aviation and taught to fly by his high school classmate Howard F. Dutton. For several years, he flew with Dutton's Sky Devils as a stunt pilot.

In 1940 he joined Northeast Airlines as a flight instructor in its instrument school. In 1941 the entire airline became involved in the war effort. From 1942 to 1945 Captain Fiske flew in the Air Transport Command and the North Atlantic Wing with the Northeast group.

He returned to commercial flying in 1945, remaining with Northeast Airlines and becoming a pilot with Delta Airlines when the two airlines merged in 1972. He retired in 1975 at the mandatory retirement age of 60.

He was predeceased by a son, Peter Fiske, who died in 1970.

He was the husband of Marguerite (Bean) Fiske for 62 years.

In addition to his wife, of Dover, family members include one daughter, Sherril Driscoll, of Hampton; two sons, Dana Fiske, of Brentwood, and Eric Fiske, of Bow; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

FISKE - Lloyd W. Fiske, 86, of Zephyrhills, Fla., died Dec. 2, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

Sandra E. Caldwell

BOSTON, Mass. - Memorial services for Sandra E. Caldwell, 55, of 111 Atlantic Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., on Monday. The Rev. Edward Kelley, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church, Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Ms. Caldwell's uncle, Arthur Downs. Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Kelley.

Ann M. Quinlan

HAMPTON - The funeral for Ann M. Quinlan, of 467 High St., who died Dec. 22, 2001, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Joseph M. Quinlan, senior priest from Red Bank, N.J., and brother-in-law of Mrs. Quinlan, the Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, and Monsignor James E. Tierney, personal friend of the family, were the celebrants. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The pall was placed over the casket by her daughter and sons, Karen A. Souney, Thomas F. Quinlan III and Kevin W. Quinlan. The readings were offered by Jennifer A. Souney and Joseph M. Souney Jr., grandchildren of Mrs. Quinlan. The Prayers to the Faithful were offered by her son Thomas. The presentation of the gifts to the altar were made by Kathleen Quinlan, Christine Quinlan, Thomas F. Quinlan IV, Kevin Quinlan and Liam Quinlan, all grandchildren of Mrs. Quinlan. Words of remembrance were offered by her son Kevin. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery, Bradford, Mass., with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Quinlan. Pallbearers were Joseph M. Souney Jr., Thomas F. Quinlan IV, Andy Messier and Kevin Dame.

Robert A. Carr

METHUEN, Mass. - Robert A. Carr, 60, of 2 Concord St., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in Rye, N.H. Born in Methuen, he was raised and educated in Andover, Mass.

He was employed as a truck driver for 42 years, most recently with Commercial Trucking of Dracut, Mass.

He is survived by his parents, Sherman and Gertrude (Fallon) Carr of Rye; three sons, Robert, Steven and Scott Carr, all of Methuen; one daughter, Melissa Carr of Methuen; his brother, Thomas Carr and his wife, Barbara, of Salem, N.H.; three sisters, Mary Lou Carr of Rye, Jane Sullivan and her husband, Raymond, of Dunstable, Mass., and Elizabeth Haskell and her husband, Roy, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one granddaughter, Kayla Carr; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

CARR - Robert A. Carr, 60, of Methuen, Mass., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in St. Theresa's Church, Rye, N.H. Interment will follow in Rye Central Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dorothy E. Berounsky

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy Ellen Berounsky, 60, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Jan. 1, 1942, she was a daughter of Melvin Norton and Dorothy Stickles. She attended local schools.

A devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was proud of being a South End Puddledocker and enjoyed the city she lived in and grew up in. An avid outdoors lover, she enjoyed walking and animals, especially her favorite cats, Woody and Jake. She enjoyed fishing the Piscataqua River, especially when the stripers were running.

She was a hard worker; she loved her work at Imperial Cleaners in Portsmouth and the people she worked with for so many years.

She is survived by her husband of more than 42 years, Charles D. Berounsky Sr., of Portsmouth; her daughters, Roxanne Wheeler of South Berwick, Maine, and Linda Rooks of Dover; her sons, Charles Berounsky of Portsmouth, Wayne Berounsky of North Berwick, Maine, Brian Berounsky of Eliot, Maine, and Scott Berounsky of Concord; a sister, Louise Beckert of Portsmouth; and many grandchildren.

BEROUNSKY - Dorothy E. Berounsky, 60, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Portsmouth. A time of sharing and remembrance will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only. Arrangements are by the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Earl J. Nickleson

KITTERY, Maine - Earl J. "Nick" Nickleson of Eliot Road died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home.

Born in Winchester, Va., he was a son of Earl and Lillian (Smith) Nickleson and attended local schools.

Mr. Nickleson served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and for more than 30 years as a member of the Army National Guard, retiring as a staff sergeant in the 1st Battalion 172nd Field Artillery.

He worked for, and retired from, the Maine Department of Transportation as a bridge operator and later in the Highway Division.

Known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, he will be missed by his many friends in a number of activities. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 443 in Dover, N.H., American Legion Post No. 47 in Rollinsford, N.H., and a member of the Good Sam - Coast to Coast Club.

He and his wife enjoyed dancing, travel and camping with their friends. He also enjoyed his time spent on coffee breaks at Hanscom's Truck Stop in Portsmouth. He had an ability to fix, paint or build many things. That gift, as well as many others, will be missed by many.

He was the husband of June (Blake) Nickleson of Kittery.

In addition to his wife, survivors include their son, William L. Nickleson of Portsmouth, N.H.; a stepson, Robert H. Donofrio of Kittery; a sister, Nancy Simpson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and his brother, Ray Nickleson of Winchester, Va.

NICKLESON - Earl J. "Nick" Nickleson of Eliot Road, Kittery, Maine, died Sunday at his home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. Friends and family may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Portsmouth Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Mildred H. McCarthy

SEABROOK - Mildred H. McCarthy, 80, a resident of Collins Road, died Dec. 27, 2001, in Salisbury, Mass.

Born in Seabrook on Dec. 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Alvah and Irene (Dockum) Dow. She had been a lifelong resident of the area.

She worked at Western Electric in North Andover, Mass., for many years until her retirement.

She is survived by three children, Jill Tropilo Spangenberg of Colorado Springs, Colo., Joy Tropilo Knox of Cherryfield, Maine, and Regan P. McCarthy of Portsmouth; two brothers, Burton and Alvah Dow, both of Seabrook; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many incredible friends.

A private service was held in Newburyport, Mass.

Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were by Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport, Mass.

Virginia L. Hayes

KITTERY, Maine - Virginia L. Hayes, 71, of 13 Park Ave., died peacefully at her home after a brief illness, on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001.

She was born in Randolph, Mass., on Nov. 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Harry C. and Helen D. (Anderson) Isaac Jr.

Raised in Randolph, she later joined the U.S. Air Force, serving during the post-Korean era.

She moved to Hampton Falls, N.H., in 1958 and had been a Kittery resident since 1976.

She worked as a clerk at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, where she was responsible for expediting the shipments of material and equipment required for the manufacture and repair of subMarines.

She was a former member of The Portsmouth Music Hall and an avid reader.

She was the wife of the late Walter C. Hayes, who died in 1991.

Family members include her son, Wayne C. Isaac and his wife, Nancy, of Londonderry, N.H.; two grandchildren, Karen Isaac and Jeffrey Isaac, both of Londonderry, N.H.; two brothers, Richard D. Isaac and his wife, Rita, of Holbrook, Mass., and Kenneth Isaac and his wife, Jean, of South Weymouth, Mass.; a sister, Beverly Stanley of North Haverhill, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; three stepsons; and several stepgrandchildren.

Mary F. Bell

HAMPTON - The funeral for Mary F. Bell, 78, of 3 Noel St., who died Dec. 28, 2001, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, and the Rev. David M. O'Leary S.T.L. with the Catholic Center at Tufts University and personal family friend, were the celebrants. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was soloist.

Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. The readings were offered by Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C., and Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C. Words of remembrance were offered by Mrs. Bell's son, Lawrence W. Bell.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father MacKenzie.

Barbara F. Rhodes

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Barbara Frances (Foss) Rhodes, 82, of 34 Shapleigh Road, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H., on Wednesday. The Rev. Ann W. Stevenson, associate rector of St. John Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Burial was in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Stevenson.

Edmond L. Daigle Jr.

DOVER - Edmond L. Daigle Jr., 49, of Dover Point Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home.

Born in Dover on Jan. 15, 1953, he was the son of Edmond and Dorothy (Towle) Daigle.

He was self-employed as a carpenter and repairer of musical instruments. He was passionately involved with motorcycles, music and diving. He took great joy in sharing these activities with those he loved. All who knew him will miss him.

He was the husband of Ann Shine.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a son, Tristan, and a sister, Susan Smith, all of Dover; and three brothers, Michael Daigle of Dover, Thomas Daigle of Madbury and David Daigle of Barrington.

DAIGLE - Edmond L. Daigle Jr., 49, of Dover Point Road, Dover, died Jan. 1, 2002. Friends may call today (Friday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the First Parish Congregational Church, 218 Central Ave., Dover, with the Rev. James Pirie officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund for Tristan Daigle, c/o Ann Shine, 419 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Edward W. Condon

SOUTH HAMPTON - Edward W. Condon, 58, of Hilldale Avenue, died suddenly Thursday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2001, at his camp in Atkinson, Maine.

Born in Amesbury, Mass., on Feb. 28, 1943, he was the son of the late Francis and Lena (Vedrant) Condon. He was the husband of Andrea (Collins) Condon.

He grew up and attended Amesbury schools but spent his high school years at Haverhill Trade, graduating with the Class of 1961. He served his country during the 1960s, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He soon started his auto body profession and for many years owned and operated Roy's Auto Body and Sales, next to his home in South Hampton

Active in his community, he was former fire chief and selectman and also spent six years on the Budget Committee for the town of South Hampton. He was an avid golfer, hunter and outdoorsman, and enjoyed spending time at his camp in Atkinson, Maine. He was also a member of the Lafayette Club in Amesbury and the VFW of Portsmouth. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Besides his wife, Andrea, he is survived by two sons, Rick E. Condon of Portsmouth and Leigh A. Condon of Seabrook; one brother, Richard A. Condon of Amesbury, Mass.; one sister, Frances Girgenti, also of Amesbury; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 31, in Amesbury, Mass. Private burial will be in Maine. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the South Hampton Volunteer Fireman's Association, c/o Sarah Moore, Main Avenue, South Hampton, NH 03827.

Barbara MacKenzie

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Barbara (Goodrich) MacKenzie, 74, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of Scotland Bridge Road, York, Maine, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, Thursday, with memorial services held at the North Congregational Church Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor, officiated. Malcolm Austin was organist. In attendance were members of the church. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Esther L. Hartford

BANGOR, Maine - Funeral services for Esther L. (Pendleton) Hartford, 95, of 758 Broadway, Bangor, Maine, and formerly of 141 Central Road, Rye, N.H., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, N.H., on Wednesday. The Rev. John Solie, pastor of the Rye Bethany Church in Rye, officiated.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Solie. Bearers were Donald Ramsay, William Betton Jr., Christopher Hartford, Scott McEwen and Daniel O'Reilly.

Bradley A. Nason

DOVER - Bradley A. Nason, formerly of Portsmouth, died Dec. 31, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home after a lengthy illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1928, in Westbrook, Maine, he was the son of the late Delbert and Lillian (Whitney) Nason.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a chef for Poland Springs in Poland, Maine, Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, and the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, N.H.

He was an avid bridge player and ran a bridge club out of Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Ruth (Long) Nason; one son, Charles Nason of Dover; five daughters, Beth Archer of Rollinsford, N.H., Laurel Miles of Albuquerque, N.M., Diane Nason of Kennebunk, Maine, Rebecca Call of East Rochester, N.H., and Eilleen Nason of Texas; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Percy Nason of Tennessee, David Nason of Falmouth, Maine, and Wayne Nason of Cornish, Maine; one sister, Rebecca Williams of Standish, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Nason.

NASON - Bradley A. Nason, 73, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Dec. 31, 2001. There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Dover Baptist Church on Washington Street. Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery in North Yarmouth, Maine, in the spring. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of the arrangements.
