Peggy Antonopoulos

PORTSMOUTH - Peggy (Economides) Antonopoulos, 89, of 14 Chain Bridge Drive, Newburyport, Mass., died Thursday evening at Edgewood Manor in Portsmouth. She was the wife of the late Charles N. Antonopoulos.

Born in Trikala, Greece, February 14, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Demetrios and Vasaliki (Chapalis) Economides and emigrated to this country with her mother and sister in 1920, settling in Newburyport, where she later attended Newburyport High School.

Mrs. Antonopoulos had been a sales lady at the former Mammoth Mart as well as at H. W. Pray Co. of Newburyport, retiring in 1987.

She was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of Newburyport.

Her survivors are two daughters, Jane Kacoyanis, and husband Nicholas G., of Newburyport; and Judith A. Pappas, and husband Nicholas J., of Rye, N.H.; three step-daughters, Jeanne Davis of McLean, Va.; Joyce Bergerson of Hollis, N.H.; and Janice Welch, and husband, Thomas, of Potomac, Md.; 10 grandchildren, David Bergerson of Hollis, N.H.; Paul Welch of Kenmore, Wash.; Julie Slingerman of Vienna, Va.; Kristina Davis of Newburyport; Geoffrey Kacoyanis of Newburyport; Diana Fiacco of Staten Island, N.Y.; Charles Pappas of Charlotte, Vt.; Lisa Richards of Portsmouth, N.H.; Brian Welch of Boerne, Texas; and Sally Davis of McLean, Va., 17 great-grandchildren, as well as a nephew, Evan Triandalfilou of Maryland. She was predeceased by a brother, John Economides, a sister, Evangeline Triandalfilou, and a grandson, Scott Bergerson.

ANTONOPOULOS - Peggy (Economides) Antonopoulos, 89, of 14 Chain Bridge Drive, Newburyport, Mass., died Jan. 3, 2001. Services from Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be Monday at 12:30 p.m. followed by services at 1:30 p.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 7 Harris Street, Newburyport. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Newburyport. Calling hours are Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 575, Newburyport, MA 01950.

James R. Hoyt

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. James R. Hoyt, 46, of 140 Court Street, died Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at his home. He was born on July 24, 1955, the son of the late Ralph F. and Dorothy F. (Stewart) Hoyt. Mr. Hoyt was a graduate of St. Michael's Parochial School and Exeter High School, Class of 1973. He attended the University of New Hampshire.

As an artist he loved to paint and enjoyed the companionship of the seniors where he resided. He attended the ALPHA Bible Study at the Salvation Army in Portsmouth.

Survivors include his five siblings, Tim Hoyt of Portsmouth, Mary Hoyt of Exeter, Dorothy P. Graber of Allen, Wash., Jane K. Gray of New South Wales, Australia and Stewart M. Hoyt of Tasmania, Australia.

HOYT - Mr. James R. Hoyt, 46, of 140 Court St., Portsmouth, died January 2, 2002. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 6534, Portsmouth, NH 03802-6534. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Winnifred A. Kotsimpulos

PORTLAND, Maine - Winnifred A. Kotsimpulos, 85, of Belfort Street, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Cedars Nursing Care Facility in Portland, following a lengthy illness.

She was born in North Conway, N.H., a daughter of Ralph A. and Nellie Leavitt Richardson. She worked as a seamstress most of her life, until she retired at age 73. An outdoor enthusiast, she especially enjoyed animals.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and was very active throughout the years in the Salvation Army.

She was the wife of the late Nicolia Kotsimpulos, who died in 1999.

Survivors include three daughters, Dianne Durr of Portland, Victoria Crane of Michigan, and Susan Gibson of Pennsylvania; her mother-in-law, Marie Molony of Portland; a granddaughter, Leah Durr of Portland; a grandson, Nicolia Kotsimpulos Jr. of South Portland; a brother, Ralph A. Richardson of Eliot; two sisters, Beatrice Sturdevant of California, and Bernice Lyle of Kittery; two nieces, Meredith Ernie of South Berwick, and Beverly Edwards of Virginia; several other nieces and nephews; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private. A spring interment will take place at First Parish Cemetery in York.

Robert C. Burge

HAMPTON - Robert C. Burge, 89, of 284 High St., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

Mr. Burge was born in Somersworth, N.H., on Aug. 13, 1912, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Nelson) Burge. He had retired to Hampton 30 years ago, coming from Mountain Ranch, Calif., where he resided for 23 years.

In 1930 at age 17, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine as an apprentice seaman and rose to the rank of captain of an oil tanker by the time he retired at the end of World War II. After the war, he raised turkeys on his ranch in California and worked as a Realtor and a stockbroker.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hampton and Saint James Lodge No. 102 F. & A.M. of Hampton.

Family members include his wife of 53 years, Irene R. (Mangiante) Burge of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

BURGE - Robert C. Burge, 89, of 284 High St., Hampton, died Jan. 5, 2002. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Masonic services will be at 6 p.m. Burial will be in the High street Cemetery, Hampton. Anna E. Serwin

YORK, Maine - Anna Elizabeth "Betty" Serwin, 76, of Surf Avenue, wife of Julius E. "Jay" Serwin died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at her winter home in Garden City Beach, South Carolina.

She was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Lowell, Mass., daughter of James and Esther (Johnson) Hanson and was a 1942 graduate of Lowell High School.

Mrs. Serwin had worked as a secretary in the management department for the New England Telephone Company in Andover, Mass., from 1941 to 1980.

She had resided in Chelmsford, Mass. from 1952 to 1979, moving to York in 1979.

Mrs. Serwin had been a former member of the Chelmsford Street Baptist Church of Lowell. She had been a former member of the Telephone Pioneers and a girl officer of Rainbows. She enjoyed traveling, needlework, reading and crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by a brother, Miles Hanson, and two sisters, Evelyn Whitworth and Phyllis Carson.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Julius E. "Jay" Serwin of York and Garden City Beach, S.C.; three daughters, Jane Irish and her husband, David Irish of York, Deborah Harkins and her husband Paul of Dunstable, Mass., and Ellen Kerrigan and her husband Bruce of Hudson, Mass.; four sisters, Helen Hogan of Mont Vernon, N.H., Doris Decatur of Nashua, N.H., Jane Rubin of York and Jacqueline Boisvert of Dracut, Mass.; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Andrew and Leah Irish and Shannon and Elizabeth Harkins.

SERWIN - Anna "Betty" Serwin of Surf Avenue, York, Maine, died Jan. 4, 2002, in South Carolina. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04338.

Herbert H. Finney

PORTSMOUTH - Herbert H. Finney, 85, of 1155 Islington St., passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing Home after a short illness.

Born in East Boston, Mass., Oct. 16, 1916, he was the son of William and Edith (Ramkenberg) Finney.

Mr. Finney served in the Army during World War II and was employed at the former Seybolt Motors in Portsmouth for 30 years. He retired in 1990 from the Water Department of the City of Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Victoria (Drobisewski) Finney; one son, Robert Finney of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Christine O'Connell of Barrington and Robert Finney of Milton; and one brother, William Finney of Roslindale, Mass., also survives.

FINNEY - Herbert H. Finney, 85, of 1155 Islington St., Portsmouth, N.H., died Jan. 5, 2002. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Anthony M. Brucato

Hampton - Anthony M. "Tony" Brucato, 19, of 31 Presidential Circle, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002.

He was born June 12, 1982, in Dover, the son of Allan P. and Barbara A. (Burley) Brucato of Hampton. Tony was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School and was a sophomore at Boston University. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, a member of the White Mountain 4000 Foot Club and a member of the Quizz Bowl at Boston University.

In addition to his parents, family members include one sister, Lynn A. Widger and her husband Gary of Dover, his maternal grandparents, Leo and Barbara Burley of Stoughton, Mass., as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brucato - Anthony M. "Tony" Brucato, of 31 Presidential Circle, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Church, Hampton, at 10 a.m. Thursday. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Alice M. Houde

DOVER - Alice M. Houde, 80, of Paul Street, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Born in Dover, on June 19, 1921, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Margaret (McGinn) St. Cyr and has lived here all of her life.

Prior to her retirement in 1978 she was a 20-year employee of the New England Telephone Co. where she was a line assigner in the plant department. She was a member of the New England Pioneers.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church, the Academy Guild, the Dover Area Senior Center and A.A.R.P.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raymond A. Houde of Dover; three daughters, Margaret Herron and her husband Robert, Mary Nichols and her husband Lawrence, all of Dover, and Denise Houde of Farmington; two sons, Raymond A. Houde Jr. and his wife Cathy, and Lawrence Houde and his wife Sue, all of Dover; eight grandchildren, R. Christopher Herron of East Hampstead, Vicky Herron Kerr of Portland, Maine, Tammy Houde Trepanier of Rochester, Heather Houde Parker of Dover, Tanya Nichols of Dover, Aaron Nichols of Somersworth, Leslie Houde of Virginia and Dale Houde of Dover; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, M. Barbara Tosi of Portsmouth, and Rose Maxwell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

HOUDE - Alice M. Houde, 80, of Paul Street, Dover, N.H., died Jan. 6, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., with the Rev. Robert Cole, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery. Augustine P. Sheehy

RYE - Augustine P. "Gus" Sheehy, 75, of Rye and Andover, Mass., died on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Brighton, Mass.

He was born April 1, 1926, in Andover.

He owned and operated Whittemore Co. and Dundee Properties. He was a member of St. Augustine Church in Andover; St. Theresa Church and Men's Club, and the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye; and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hibernians, and Holy Family Men's Guild. He was a naval veteran, serving on the cruiser Houston, during World War II.

He was the husband for 48 years of Kathleen (Mahoney) Sheehy of Rye and Andover.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen and her husband, William Fitzgerald, of Methuen, Mass.; a son, Jeffrey Sheehy and his wife, Karen, of Andover; five grandchildren; a brother, John Sheehy of Reading, Mass.; a sister, Catherine Finnegan of Holbrook, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

SHEEHY - Augustine P. "Gus" Sheehy, 75, of Andover, Mass., and Rye, died Jan. 5, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral Mass on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex St., Andover, Mass. Calling hours are today (Wednesday) from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Burke Funeral Home, 390 North Main St., Andover. Burial will take place in St. Augustine Cemetery. Roberta Jean Smith

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Roberta Jean (Stokes) Smith, 72, a genealogist of Portsmouth, N.H., Goleta, Calif., and more recently of Santa Barbara passed away peacefully at her home at 1:45 a.m., Dec. 19, 2001.

Born on March 23, 1929, she was the daughter of Harold E. Stokes and Fern (Patrell) Stokes in Springfield, Vt. She attended school there and graduated in 1947. She held several secretarial positions until the fall of 1948, when she married Dean Crawford Smith.

Dean and Roberta moved to Saunderstown, R.I., where Dean was employed by Eastern States Farmers Exchange and Roberta worked for the Industrial Management Department at the University of Rhode Island for five years. They subsequently lived in Jefferson, Iowa; Saunderstown; Pepperell, Mass.; and finally retired to Portsmouth, N.H., in 1985.

In 1972, Roberta became interested in learning more about her family and started in a long and rewarding avocation in genealogy. Both Roberta and her husband were life members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston and maintained memberships in genealogical societies in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and California. Roberta's first published genealogy book titled "The Descendants of Joseph Patrell, 1723-1790s of Ware River Parish, Massachusetts" is at the printers and will be available this spring.

Roberta and her husband purchased a home in Goleta in 1982 and starting in 1985 spent their winters on the West Coast and summers in Portsmouth, N.H. Following the death of her husband in January of 2000, Roberta sold their home in Portsmouth and moved to Santa Barbara.

Survivors include her brother, Edward Henry Stokes of Springfield, Vt.; one son, Dr. Bradford Dean Smith of Augusta, Maine; one daughter, Kristin (Smith) Forest of Reno, Nev.; four granddaughters, Melinda Ann Hunt of San Bruno, Calif., and Devon Marie, Catherine Fern and Taylor Lynn Smith of Augusta; and one grandson, Ryan Joseph Smith of Augusta.

SMITH - Roberta Jean (Stokes) Smith, 72, of Santa Barbara, Calif., formerly of Portsmouth, died Dec. 19, 2001. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, corner of Main and Central streets in Claremont, N.H. An interment at Mountain View Cemetery will be before the memorial service at 10:30 a.m., procession to begin from Stringers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roberta's name to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara, 222 East Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

C. Jaime James Jr.

Dover - C. Jaime James Jr. of Dover Point Road died Dec. 31, 2001, in Westchester, N.Y.

He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, the son of Clarence Sr. and Badine (Richardson) James.

He owned and operated Coastline Aviation at the Pease International Tradeport. He also ran Binex, his own project management consulting firm.

He was active in the arts community performing at local venues including the Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Durham Centerstage, the Generic Theater and the Players' Ring. Mr. James was not only active in the arts community in the Seacoast, he was also active in the Philadelphia area as well.

He is survived by his parents of Suisun City, Calif.; one sister, Joyce, and brother-in-law Earl T. Jefferson, Rapid City, S.D.; maternal aunts and uncles, A.D. Lathan, Gibsland, La., Esther and Melvin Ross, Los Angeles, Robert and Doris Richardson, Shreveport, La., Roy and Willa Richardson, Chicago, Charlie and Barbara Richardson, Gibsland, La., Elmira McCarty, Grambling, La., Melvin and Alice Richardson, Shreveport, La.; paternal aunts, Mary James Rosario, San Francisco, James and Amy Edwards, and Mike and Jennifer Williams, Vacherie, La., and Walter and Sue Ann Watts, San Jose, Calif.; nephews, C. Andrew and Mischelle (Dlugosz) Jefferson, Rapid City, Earl Toussaint Jefferson, Austin, Texas, Adrian L'Ouverture Jefferson, Rapid City; a host of cousins; two grandnieces and one grandnephew.

Robert C. Burge

HAMPTON - The funeral for Robert C. Burge, 89, of 284 High St., who died January 4, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Joseph Mangiante, Jerry Piper, Peter Zaccone and John Stump.

Suzanne M. Campbell

PALM CITY, Fla. - Mrs. Suzanne (Suzy) Marie Campbell, 40, of Palm City died suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart, Fla.

A native of New Castle, N.H., she and her family lived in the Stuart area since 1977 and moved to Palm City 3½ years ago. She attended Catholic church and was a supporter and volunteer with Martin County Schools, Hospice of Martin and St. Lucie Inc., the local 4-H Club as a group leader, and was the volunteer coordinator for Big Heart Brigade. She was a big supporter of local firefighters.

A loving wife and mother, she never met a stranger. She was the wife of Clark Campbell of Palm City, a firefighter.

Survivors include one son, Greg Campbell of Palm City; one daughter, Stacey Campbell of Palm City; a brother, Jim Bauer of Hayes, Va.; a sister, Jeannie Freiden of Stuart; her mother and father, Sally and Don Whitehouse of Stuart; her stepbrother, David Whitehouse and his wife, Janet, of Norfolk, Mass.; and many other relatives.

She was predeceased by her stepbrother Doug Whitehouse in 1977.

CAMPBELL - Mrs. Suzanne (Suzy) Marie Campbell, 40, of Palm City, Fla., and formerly of New Castle, died suddenly Jan. 6, 2002. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City, Fla. A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City, with burial to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Palm City.

Joseph A. Finochiaro

METHUEN, Mass. - Joseph A. Finochiaro, 68, of Methuen, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002 at his residence.

Born in Lawrence, he attended Lawrence schools and graduated from North Andover High School and M. Fazio School of Beauty Culture. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen, the Sons of Italy, was a past member of the Lawrence Exchange Club and past vice president of the Local Musicians Union for many years. He received extensive music training.

He was a member of the house band of Joe Binettes for 12 years. He was also a member of the Bel Aires, the John Charles Band, the Black Derby Jazz Band, and was band leader and lead vocalist of Elegant Sounds. He was an accomplished saxophone player and lead vocalist with these bands.

Mr. Finochiaro served in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He was sales manager for many years at Prudential Insurance Company. He most recently owned and operated Elegant Novelty on Essex Street in Lawrence until his retirement.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and son. He was known for his gentlemanly way and kind nature.

He was predeceased by his father, Charles J. Finochiaro and brother, Anthony Finochiaro.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille J. (Grieco) Finochiaro of Methuen; his mother, Catherine (LaSpina) Finochiaro of Methuen; three sons, Charles, and his wife Donna Finochiaro, of Merrimack, N.H., Joel, and his wife Marie Finochiaro, of Haverhill, and Michael Finochiaro of Methuen; one daughter, Maria "Mia" Hicks-Langlois, and her husband Raymond Langlois, of Stratham, N.H.; two grandchildren, Michael Hicks of Stratham, and Kelsey Finochiaro of Merrimack; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

FINOCHIARO - Joseph A. Finochiaro, 68, of Methuen, Mass., died Jan. 7, 2002. Family and friends may call Friday, Jan. 11, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 12, at 9 a.m. at St. Lucy's Church in Methuen. Burial will follow at Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence. Donations may be made to the Joseph A. Finochiaro Musical Enhancement Fund at Sacred Heart School, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Marilyn J. Hovey

MOULTONBORO, N.H. - Marilyn Jeneal "Lyn" (Reich) Hovey, 62, of Moultonboro, N.H. and Lake Lure, N.C., died Dec. 30, 2001, in North Carolina, following a courageous seven month battle with brain cancer.

She was born Sept. 2, 1939 in Atlanta, Ga. She moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. at the age of 3 and then to Haverhill, Mass. at the age of 7. As a teen-ager at Haverhill High School, she was a member of the International Order of Rainbow. She graduated from high school in June 1956 and attended Eastern Baptist College in St. David's, Pa., before earning her nursing diploma at Bryn Mawr School of Nursing, outside of Philadelphia.

She married meteorologist William B. Hovey in May of 1967 and moved to New Hampshire where she worked as a registered nurse at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia. While continuing her career and raising her children, she also took courses at the former Belknap College, in Center Harbor, and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at New England College in Henniker.

Her community activities included volunteering for the Moultonboro Visiting Nurses Association and serving as a leader of the Sandwich Saddle-Ites 4-H Club. She was also a member of the Center Harbor Congregational Church and she enjoyed substitute teaching at Moultonboro Academy. After moving to Lake Lure, N.C. in December of 1993, she worked at the McDowell Hospital in Marion, N.C. until her retirement in May of 2001.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, William B. Hovey; four children, Jaime B. Hovey of Chicago, Deborah A. Hovey of Hartford, Conn., Susan E. Hovey of New York City, R. Derek Hovey of Center Harbor; her mother, Agnes Lavoie of Barstow, Calif.; three nephews, and one niece.

HOVEY - Marilyn Jeneal "Lyn" (Reich) Hovey, 62, of Moultonboro, N.H., and Lake Lure, N.C., died Dec. 30, 2001. There are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held in the Center Harbor Congregational Church, Center Harbor, N.H., on Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Earl W. Miller Jr., pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will be held in the Shannon Cemetery, Moultonboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lyn's name to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Duke University Medical Center, Box 3624, Durham, N.C. 27710. The Mayhew Funeral Home in Meredith, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.
