Edward C. Taylor

ELIOT, Maine - Edward C. Taylor, 89, of Eliot died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H., after a brief illness.

Born on Nov. 23, 1912, in Nutley, N.J., he was the son of the late A. Russel and Madeleine (Barlow) Taylor. For more than 30 years, he worked as an electrical engineer for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and then moved to Kittery in 1948 and later to Eliot.

He and his wife Winifred were very active folk dancers and especially enjoyed Scottish dancing, which they did throughout the Seacoast area. After retirement, they traveled extensively and spent their winters in Mexico. His other interests included sailing the coast of Maine and skiing the mountains of Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He was an avid contract bridge player.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Winifred (Zinck) Taylor; and one son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Deborah Taylor of York.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla, many years ago.

Anthony M. Brucato

HAMPTON - The funeral for Anthony M. "Tony" Brucato, 19, of 31 Presidential Circle, Hampton, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was con-celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the principal celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Paul Helfrick, campus minister of Boston University; the Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor; the Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest; and the Rev. Scott J. St. Louis, deacon. Janet Green was the soloist and Nelson K. Ward was the soloist. The pall was placed on the casket by Tony's parents, Allan and Barbara Brucato. The readings were by Charlie Goodwin and Greg Hayward.

The gifts were presented to the altar by Tony's sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Gary Widger. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Private burial was in the High Street Cemetery with committal prayers by Fr. Ham. Pall bearers were James Burley, Patrick Frasier, Joseph Cardoso, Joseph Cardoso Jr., Robert Cardoso, Gary Widger and Louis Hamel.

David M. Pierce

EPPING - David M. Pierce, 50, of 153 Old Hedding Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 27, 1951, in Rochester, N.H., the son of Gloria (Hart) Pierce of Dover and the late Maurice Pierce.

He lived in the Seacoast area all of his life and was a graduate of Oyster River High School in Durham. He had resided in Epping for the past 20 years.

He was a master electrician and worked for the Exeter and Hampton Electric Company and most recently for the Kohlhase Company. He enjoyed fishing and spending time at his camp.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Nancy J. (Paul) Pierce of Epping; two sons, Jamieson Pierce of Ohio, and Jason Pierce of Manchester; one daughter, Julie Pierce of Newmarket; two brothers, Michael Pierce of New Hampshire, and Ronald Pierce of Vermont; four sisters, Deborah Welch of West Virginia, Cindy Herrick of Nottingham, N.H., Pamela Criss of Rochester, and Wendy Rowe of Dover; one stepson, Glen S. Wise and his wife, Laren of South Hampton; one step-daughter, Sheila H. Jamieson of North Hampton; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PIERCE - David M. Pierce of 153 Old Hedding Road, Epping, died Jan. 9, 2002. Services will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, at 11 a.m. Monday. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Burial will be private.

Anthony P. Henry

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Anthony P. Henry, 94, of Roaring Rock Point Road, died Jan. 10, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Easton, Pa., son of Paul and Caroline (Periog) Henry. He was a graduate of Pace Institute in New York City.

While in college, he won many awards as a runner in track and field competitions. He served in the National Guard in New York.

For 39 years, he worked for the American Can Co., Park Avenue, New York, and Greenwich, Conn., retiring in 1970 as an accounting supervisor.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Stamford, Conn. He enjoyed gardening and loved baseball. He had played in the New York City minor leagues.

Mr. Henry was the last survivor of a family of seven children. He was predeceased by five brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Florence B. Henry of York Harbor; two daughters, Carol Ann and her husband Terry Powley of Mantua, N.J. and Paulette and her husband, Brian Chernack of York Harbor; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Powley of Madison, N.J., Paul Powley of Cherry Hill, N.J., William Powley of Kittery, Loren McCabe of Canterbury, N.H. and Cassandra Chernack of Kittery; and two great-grandchildren, Colin and Claire McCabe, both of Canterbury, N.H.

HENRY - Anthony P. Henry, 94, of Roaring Rock Point Road, York Harbor, Maine, died Jan 10, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at St. Christopher Church, York St., York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Robert J. Pickett

GREENLAND - Robert J. Pickett, 71, of 571 Post Road, died Jan. 7, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on June 12, 1930, the son of the late Charles W. and Gertrude (Maertins) Pickett. Mr. Pickett attended Portsmouth Schools.

After his employment in the Merchant Marines as a seaman, Mr. Pickett was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years.

PICKETT - Robert J. Pickett, 71, of 571 Post Road, Greenland, died Jan. 7, 2002. A memorial service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, N.H., at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Friends invited. Donations in Robert's memory may be made to the Strawbery Banke Museum, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Claire H. Blake

NEWMARKET - Claire H. Blake, 74, of 9 Grant Road, formerly of 911 Camelot, Sherwood Forest, Exeter, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at The Pines of Newmarket.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on April 7, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Willy) Howard.

Mrs. Blake graduated from Groveland High School. She worked at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton for many years in the food service program. She resided in Exeter for 15 years, coming from Hampton. Mrs. Blake was an active member in the Mothers' Circle of Hampton, and she enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

She was the wife of Philip N. Blake, who died in 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela J. Clark and her husband Kenneth of Greenland, and JoAnn Bertrand and her husband David of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Jean Barbone of Groveland, Mass.; and one niece and one nephew.

BLAKE - Claire H. Blake, 74, of Grant Road, Newmarket, formerly of Sherwood Forest, Exeter, died Jan. 12, 2002. Services will be held at The Pines of Newmarket, 9 Grant Road, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the Claire Blake Scholarship Fund, c/o The Pines of Newmarket, 9 Grant Road, Newmarket, NH 03857. Private burial was held in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Assistance with arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Richard M. Hastey

PORTSMOUTH - Richard M. "Reech" Hastey, 51, of Concord Way, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Las Cruces, N.M., on July 24, 1950, the son of Jane N. (Lewellen) Borr of New Mexico and the late Russell Borr.

Richard had worked for Hess Oil in Alaska, was currently employed for Tyco Telecommunications as a yardman and was a sternman on a lobster boat.

He was an avid Harley-Davidson bike rider, enjoyed the fellowship at the Golden Memories Call Club, had a loyal devotion to his friends and associates, enjoyed white-water rafting, was a tough Texan, and had a loved for his dog, Casha.

Besides his mother of New Mexico, survivors include two sons, Timothy James Hastey and Richard Hastey Jr.; brothers in proxy, Paul Brown and Terry Dyer; brothers in spirit, Dan Bedee and Craig Casavant; and sisters in spirit, Gail Smith and Susie Casavant.

HASTEY - Richard M. "Reech" Hastey, 51, of Concord Way, Portsmouth, died Jan. 11, 2002. At his request, private services will be held at the convenience of his family and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Michael V. Frampton

ST. MARYS, Ga. - Mr. Michael V. Frampton, 56, of 403 Fairfield Court, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Shades Jacksonville Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., April 7, 1945, the son of Katherine E. (Hutchinson) Frampton of New Castle, N.H., and the late Harold Frampton.

Mr. Frampton was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1963, and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1963 to 1967.

He was currently employed as a supervisor at the Kings Bay Naval Base in Kings Bay.

Mr. Frampton's passion was instructing boys in the sport of boxing, and he was an avid hunter.

He was the husband of Roberta (White) Frampton of St. Marys.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a son, Michael J. Frampton of Lebanon, Maine; two grandchildren; three brothers, Damon Frampton of Winterhaven, Fla., Jeffry Frampton of Newfields, N.H., and Mark Frampton of Rockland, Maine; a sister, Linda Fernald of York, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

FRAMPTON - Mr. Michael V. Frampton, 56, of 403 Fairfield Court, St. Marys, Ga., died Jan. 10, 2002. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations in Michael's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Nettie M. Page

KINGSTON - Nettie M. Page, 90, of Kingston died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

A native of Haverhill, Mass., she was born on July 22, 1911, the daughter of the late John B. and Mabel (Barnes) Mason.

A lifelong resident of Kingston, she was the owner/operator of the Kingston Agway. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Kingston, the Corinthian Chapter of the Eastern Star, The Business of Professional Women Club, The Mayflower Women, The Daughters of American Revolution, The East Kingston Grange, The Rebeccas and the Agway Committee. She was also the president of The NH Republican Club.

She was predeceased by her first husband, G. Austin Kemp, as well as her second husband, Lewis Page.

Survivors include by a daughter, Patience Berounsky of Portsmouth; a stepson, Donald A. and Norma Kemp of Kingston; a stepdaughter, Janet and Karl Corser of Lompoc, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dorcas Ryan; and two grandsons, John M. and Charles Berounsky.

PAGE - Nettie M. Page, 90, of Kingston died Jan. 10, 2002. Services will be held in spring at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of the arrangements.

Frank J. Merrick

KITTERY, Maine - Frank James Merrick, 92, of Kittery died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the York Hospital.

He was born May 20, 1909, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Frank Royal Merrick and Rose (Elliot) McGee. He attended schools in Forge Village, Mass., and Manchester, N.H.

After schooling, he moved to Windsor, Vt., where he met Viola Russell. They married Jan. 9, 1933.

They had one child, a son, Francis Royal. They moved to Kittery in 1936, where Frank worked as a manager of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's officers club for seven years before retiring from Simplex wire and cable company after 20 years of dedicated service.

He loved his family, baseball, beer and making people laugh. He had a tremendous sense of humor and was always a bright spot around others. He left smiles on many people's faces.

He was the husband of Viola Merrick, who was at his side in York Hospital for their 69th wedding anniversary two days before his death.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter-in-law, Sonja; grandchildren Maureen, Maxine, Marta, Russell and Shannon; and his great-grandchildren, Devon, Rory and Logan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his pride and joy, his loving son "Frankie," who died in 1996.

MERRICK - Frank J. Merrick, 92, of Kittery, Maine, died Jan. 11, 2002, at York Hospital. There will be no funeral services. An hour of visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Deacon Claude Spencer of St. Christopher Catholic Church of York, will offer prayers during that time. A private burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, Maine.

Irene B. Cavaretta

DOVER - Irene B. Cavaretta, 82, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home, where she had been a resident since 1994. She had previously resided in Rye and Rochester for many years.

She was born in Kittery, Maine, on Dec. 27, 1919, the daughter of Herbert and Sadie (Woodward) Brooks. She was one of 12 siblings in the family.

Mrs. Cavaretta and her late husband owned and operated a pizza restaurant in Rye for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Cavaretta, in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, George McCombe of Beverly, Mass., and Glenn E. McCombe of Hawaii; a brother, John P. Brooks of Alton; four sisters, Muriel Barnaby of Portsmouth, Anne Avery of Kittery, Maine, Janet Still of Hampton and Ruth Slonski of Connecticut; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra L. Acton, in 1971.

CAVARETTA - Irene B. Cavaretta, 82, of Dover, formerly of Rye and Rochester, died Jan. 11, 2002. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in her memory may be sent to the Riverside Rest Home, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820, c/o the activities fund. Arrangements are by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral & Cremation Services, 177 North Main St., Rochester, N.H.

Jeanne P. Conley

ESSEX, Vt. - Jeanne Paula (Fiset) Conley, 56, of Essex died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002.

She was born Dec. 29, 1945, in Exeter, N.H., the only child of the late Philip and Jennie (Suszka) Fiset.

She graduated from St. Michael's Parish School in Exeter and from Exeter High School, Class of 1963. She matriculated at the University of New Hampshire and gained a bachelor of arts degree in classics in 1967, then a master of arts in classical studies at Loyola University, Chicago. There she met her future husband, and married James P. Conley on June 14, 1969, in Exeter.

Aside from her meticulous concern for family, home and garden, Jeanne labored for more than 20 years as a director of religious education on the local parish level. Her last three years of part-time work were in the company of the luncheon crew at Hiawatha School, Essex Junction.

She was a member of the Classical Association of New England, CANE, and a eucharistic minister among the vibrant faith community at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Winooski. There she enjoyed the prayerful company of the Sisters of Providence As an associate, Jeanne was fortunate to have attended the beatification of Mother Emilie Tavernier Gamelin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence, in October.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter Jennifer and son-in-law John Sevier of Kensington, N.H.; as well as by her loyal cats, Pedro and Pollux, at home. Her extended family includes longtime friends and a number of cousins with whom she shared a large family reunion in July 2000.

Jeanne's family gratefully acknowledges the splendid level of health care afforded her, from initial diagnosis through surgery, the treatments necessary to fight the disease and the truly inspirational hospice care provided by the nurses and aides of the VNA and Nancy Sevier.

CONLEY - Jeanne P. Conley, 56, of Essex, Vt., died Jan. 12, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in St. Francis Xavier Church, Winooski, Vt. Interment will be Wednesday in the family plot in Exeter. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at the LaVigne Funeral Home, Winooski. Those who wish may make contributions in Jeanne's memory to St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski. Arrangements are by LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski.

Ellen J. Witham

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Ellen Jane Witham, 99, of Gerrish Island Lane, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the SunBridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born July 19, 1902, in Kittery Point, daughter of William H. and Fannie (Brooks) Spinney.

She enjoyed crocheting and the times spent lobster fishing with her husband.

Mrs. Witham was predeceased by her husband, Herbert S. Witham, who died in 1969.

Survivors include her sister, Lottie Bush of Pittsfield, Maine; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Lillian) Spinney of Kittery Point; nine nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Herbert S. Witham Jr. who died in infancy; and by her brother, Charles Spinney.

YORK, Maine - Robert W. Huntley, 62, of 9 Jeffrey Drive died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1939, in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Vance and Lottie (Bishop) Huntley. He was a 1958 graduate of Shead Memorial High School in Eastport and received a bachelor's in business administration in 1962 from Husson College, Bangor.

He began his career at Kemper Insurance and Continental Insurance in Boston. He later worked for General Reinsurance Corp., then served as president of Folksamerica Reinsurance Co. of New York, from 1980 to 1984. Most recently , he served as an executive with American International Group of New York City.

He had resided in Morganville, N.J., for 27 years, moving to York in October 2000.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and was an avid gardener.

He was the husband of Mary-Jean (Forsyth) Huntley, York, for 43 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Mark R. Huntley of Glen Allen, Va.; two daughters, Heather A. Flyge of Robbinsville, N.J., and Melissa M. Stinson of Chester, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Maxwell, Chadwick and Lexington Huntley, Harrison, Hadley and Sydney Flyge, and Hayden and Walker Stinson; one brother, Albion Huntley of South Portland; three sisters, Joyce Tatton of St. Andrews, N.B., Canada, Jacqueline Cowie of Kingston, Nova Scotia, and Janet Ingersoll of Grand Manan, Canada.

WITHAM - Ellen J. Witham, of Kittery Point, Maine, widow of Herbert S. Witham, died Jan. 11, 2002 at the SunBridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth. Private services will be held. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.
