Jeannette R. Clark

HAMPTON - Jeannette R. Clark, 93, formerly of 79 Mace Road, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

She was born at her parents' home on Exeter Road on Feb. 24, 1908, the second of six children. She was the daughter of Charles White and Nellie Moulton and was a direct descendant of Daniel Moulton, one of the original settlers of the town of Hampton in 1638. She graduated from Hampton Academy and went on to Keene Normal School, where she received a teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in a one-room schoolhouse in Antrim. After two years there, she returned to the Seacoast area and took a position as the teacher in the one-room schoolhouse in the Smithtown section of Seabrook. While her children were still young, she returned to teaching in Seabrook and in 1947 took a position as the sixth-grade teacher at the North Hampton elementary school in what is now known as Centennial Hall. She continued teaching in North Hampton until her retirement in 1968.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the North Hampton Garden Club.

Her husband, Raymond W. Clark, predeceased her in 1988.

She enjoyed keeping up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she faithfully followed the Boston Red Sox season after season, recording the scores in her journal. She also enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, tole painting and weekend trips to her summer camp on Connor Pond in Ossipee.

The last of five siblings, a generation that spanned the twentieth century, she is survived by her son, Raymond C. Clark of Brattleboro, Vt.; her daughter, Nancy J. Osgood of Hampton; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. At her request, there will be no funeral service. A family gathering of remembrance will be held at a later date. Wallace E. Patch Jr.

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Wallace E. "Brother" Patch Jr., 80, of 135 Braveboat Harbor Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

Born on May 20, 1921, in Kittery Point, he was a son of Wallace E. Sr. and Marion (Tobey) Patch. He attended local schools, including R.W. Traip Academy.

A lifelong resident of Kittery, he was active in his community, serving on the Kittery Cemetery Committee for many years, as well as the Kittery Point Clam Commission. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Kittery Point, where he served as a deacon. He also served as a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 314 of Kittery Point, aiding five Scouts in attaining the badge of Eagle Scout.

His first love was his time spent with family, playing with his beloved grandchildren, golfing with his sons, and enjoying a walk with his wife. He also enjoyed many years of time spent with friends and family at his camp on Schoodic Lake in Brownville, Maine.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army in World War II and later as a shop planner at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than 39 years, retiring in 1980. After his retirement, he spent time as a custodian for the Kittery schools and as a handyman and painting contractor.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 48 years, Althea (Hoyt) Patch; his three sons and their wives, Wayne and Susan Patch of South Berwick, Steven and Maria Patch of Cumberland, and Scott Patch and his wife, Lisa Dinsmore, of Eliot; his brother Maurice Patch of Kittery; two sisters, Dorothy Fernald of Unity and Anne Higgins of North Berwick; and four grandchildren, Carrie Patch, Daniel Patch, Abigale Patch and Riley Wallace Dinsmore-Patch.

He was predeceased by his brother Chester Patch and his sister Mildred Patch.

PATCH - Wallace E. Patch Jr., 80, of Braveboat Harbor Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died Jan. 15, 2002, at his home. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the First Christian Church of Kittery Point. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Kittery Point. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Nathan Smith

JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. - Nathan Smith died Dec. 28, 2001. He was born in Koretz, Russia, on Aug. 31, 1911.

He was the father of Steven P. Smith of Fort Lee, N.J., Barry S. Smith and his wife, Susan, of Rochester, N.H., and Richard A. Smith and his wife, Kathy, of Portsmouth, N.H.; the brother of the late Lillian Bornstein of Watertown, Mass., and Marie Katz of Lewiston, Maine; and a grandfather of Hadley and Ashley Smith.

A celebration of his life and service to his community was held on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Nate Smith House, 155 Lamertine St., Jamaica Plain.

He received many honors for his lifetime of service to his community and to the cause of world peace. His involvement included Action for Boston Community Development, the Active Foster Grandparent Program and the Rainbow Coalition. He was featured on the Channel 7, WHDH-TV, Salute People program, for Gray Panthers on the Prowl, along with Maggie Kuhn, Elsie Frank, Catherine Delorey, and Frank Manning. The Hyde Square Task Force gave him a leadership and service award, and the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation dedicated the Nate Smith House in his honor. He was given the Mass. League of Community Health Center, SASW (MA) Beverly Ross-Fliegel Memorial Award and the Urban Edge Community Service Award.

He was also a World War II veteran.

Interment will take place at a later date at the Bourne National Cemetery following cremation. Arrangements are by the Mann & Rodgers Funeral Home, Jamaica Plain.

TOTH - Vida Alice (Goodreau) Toth, 93, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours.

Barbara M. Charleston

VASSALBORO, Maine - Barbara M. Charleston, 81, died Jan. 11, 2002, in Waterville.

Born in Quincy, Mass., Jan. 6, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Mabel (Ayer) Marshall.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey W. Charleston, who died in 1983.

She was known by all who loved her as "Gram." She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was the cornerstone of the Charleston family and all others that her life touched.

She is survived by her children, William of Lakewood, N.J., Russell of Exeter, N.H., and Barbara Gruninger of Webber Pond, Vassalboro; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be no services at this time. Arrangements by the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Sigrid M.C. Erickson

MEREDITH - Sigrid M.C. (Anderson-Bloom) Erickson, 82, of Gould Avenue, formerly of Powers Road, Meredith Neck, and wife of the late Carl E. Erickson, died Sunday in the Lakes Regional General Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 14, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Gustaf W. and Hedwig M. (Johnson) Anderson-Bloom. married in 1959 in the Medford First Congregational Church, the Ericksons made their home on Grove Street in Medford, Mass. For many of these years, she was employed as an assistant treasurer at the Medford Savings Bank. Following retirement in 1980, she and her husband moved to their former summer home on Meredith Neck, where she had lived until her illness. She and her late husband enjoyed their years of retirement, swimming and boating from the their lakefront home, and their extended international travel. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Meredith.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Kathleen Zamarchi of Portsmouth, David Smith of Salisbury, Md., Chris Mosher of Cambridge, Mass., and Lynn Cornwell of Seattle, Wash.; two brothers-in-law, Harold Erickson of Wellesley, Mass., and Robert Erickson, of Meredith; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Dahl, also of Meredith. She was the mother of the late Robert Erickson, formerly of Westwood, Mass., and Scott Erickson, formerly of Brookline, Mass.

Marjorie O. Gaffney

EPPING - Marjorie O. Gaffney, 72, of 46 Jenness Road, formerly of Hampton, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Manchester, Mass., Feb. 23, 1929, the daughter of the late Vayne and Myrtle (Preston) Stanwood. She attended Essex (Mass.) High School.

She worked as a teacher's aide at the Marston Elementary School in Hampton for many years.

Mrs. Gaffney resided in Hampton for 32 years before moving to Epping in 1998. She held a lifetime membership with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans Post in Claremont.

She was the wife of Lewis K. Gaffney Sr. for 56 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Lewis K. Gaffney Jr. and Stephen P. Gaffney and wife Gina, all of Epping; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Vayne Stanwood Jr., of Venice, Fla.; one sister, Priscilla Stanwood of Gloucester, Mass.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Barbara M. Jameson

OSSIPEE - Barbara Mae (Wilson) Jameson, 80, formerly of Portsmouth, died on Jan. 11, 2002, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.

Mrs. Jameson was born March 18, 1921, in Amesbury, Mass., the daughter of Leroy and Beatrice (Ladd) Wilson. For many years she lived in Portsmouth and was employed as a telephone operator for New England Telephone. She also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include her son, R. Dean Jameson of Rockingham, N.C.; her daughter, Dalraine J. Keravick of Meredith; and five grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Vida A. Toth

PORTSMOUTH - Vida Alice (Goodreau) Toth, 93, of 188 Jones Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.

She was born in Swanton, Vt., on Oct. 10, 1908, the daughter of Alfred and Alfonsene (Therrien) Goodreau.

She was the wife of the late Andrew Toth Jr., who did on April 29, 1970.

Survivors include his son, Leo Gaudreau (Theresa Cote); granddaughters Céline (Bernard St-Onge), Lise (Denis Greendale), Diane (Paul Cole); great-grandchildren François, Valérie, Annie, Claudine; her sister, Rita Gaudreau; nieces Shyrley Gaudreau (George Crandall) and Phillys Wallgate (Jacques Gadoury); grandnephew George Jr. Crandall, his wife and two daughters.

FULLAM - Phyllis M. Fullam, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died Jan. 16, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. John A. Bellerose

HAMPTON - John A. Bellerose, 87, of 14 Belmont Circle, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home after a period of failing health.

Mr. Bellerose was born in Pembroke, N.H., on Nov. 4, 1914, the son of John O. and Louisa (Carriere) Bellerose. Before moving to Hampton in the late 1950s, he had resided in Plymouth, Portsmouth and South Portland, ME.

He was a 1933 graduate of St. Joseph's High School for Boys in Manchester and worked from 1933 to 1938 as a stenographer for the Suncook Mills. He also played semi-professional baseball for the Suncook Mills team from 1932 to 1937.

In May of 1938, he began his civil service career with the U.S. government. He worked as an interpreter and stenographer for the U.S. Immigration Service in Montreal, Canada. Then he moved to Plymouth, where he was a ranger and clerk for the White Mountains National Forest. He then went to the U.S. Coast Artillery at Camp Langdon in New Castle where he became chief clerk of the Quartermaster Corps of the Harbor Defenses. In 1950, he transferred to Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Mr. Bellerose transferred to the Internal Revenue office in Portsmouth in 1954, where he was Chief of the Administrative Division. He transferred to the IRS Center in Andover, Mass., in 1964, where he retired in 1972 after 33 years of government service.

During World War II, he served as 1st sergeant with Cannon Company, 161st Infantry Regiment, 25th Division of the U.S. Army. While serving in Luzon, Philippines, his unit was in continuous combat against Japanese forces for a record 165 days, where they pushed the Japanese Northward from the Lingayen Gulf up the mountains to Balete Pass. His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation for action against the entrenched Japanese armor in the Battle of San Manuel. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star Medals.

He served the town of Hampton as a member of the Municipal Budget Committee and a member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Mr. Bellerose was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Saint Vincent dePaul Society, a former member of the men's choir, and was active on many church committees. He was a member of the Suncook Valley Post 2860 Veterans of Foreign Wars since 1948.

He was interested in genealogy, tracing his family history through Canada to the 1700s in Lorraine, France. He also organized and participated in many reunions which were held around the country with his Army buddies.

Mr. Bellerose was the husband of the late Gertrude (Fontaine) Bellerose for over 50 years, until her death in 1990.

Family members include a brother, Jerome Bellerose of Goffstown; a brother-in-law, Eugene Fontaine of Litchfield, and many nieces and nephews.

BELLEROSE - John A. Bellerose of 14 Belmont Circle, Hampton, died Jan. 13, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Monday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. After cremation, spring burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Vida Toth

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service for Vida (Gaudreau) Toth, 93, of 188 Jones Ave., was held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Friday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. In attendance were representatives from the SunBridge of Portsmouth.

Madeline E. McInnes

PORTSMOUTH - Madeline E. (Cole) McInnes, 82, of 115 South St., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 13, 1919, the daughter of the late Everett and Ida (Schwartz) Cole. She enjoyed her many friendships, yard sales, gardening and animals and was a lover of music. Besides her husband of 58 years, Andrew McInnes, survivors include a daughter, Jeanne McInnes of Portsmouth; two nieces, Eileen Bellomo and Patrice Bellomo, both of New York, N.Y.; two nephews, Alan McInnes and Ronald McInnes; a sister-in-law, Sue McInnes; cousins Reginald Courtney and Rosemary Courtney; and several other cousins.

McINNES - Madeline E. (Cole) McInnes, 82, of 115 South St., Portsmouth, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Bobby J. Smith

PORTSMOUTH - Bobby John Smith, 63, of 920 Sagamore Ave., died after an illness of cancer on Jan. 1, 2002, at Sunbridge of Exeter.

A native of Tifton, Ga., he was born March 8, 1938, son of Columbus and Rosa Bell (Watson) Smith. He was from a family of 11 children and was educated in Miami, Fla. After graduation he entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Pease Air Force Base. He then worked as an electrician for 17 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the Portsmouth American Legion and VFW posts.

He was the widower of Jeannette (Shaffer) Smith and leaves two daughters, Jeanelle Smith of Miami, Fla., and Pamela Cormier of Brunswick, Maine; grandchildren Tiana and Iman Smith of Florida; four brothers, Marvin Smith, Lester Smith, and Milton Smith, all of Miami, Fla., and Alden Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Helen Dunn and Annie Smith, both of Miami, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

SMITH - Bobby John Smith, of Portsmouth, died Jan. 1, 2002. Graveside committal services, to be held at the state veterans cemetery in Boscawen, will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Thomas E. French Jr.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - Thomas E. French Jr., 87, a resident of Goose Rocks Road, formerly of Rocky Hill, Conn., and Amherst, Mass., died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

He was born in East Hartford, Conn., on Jan. 11, 1915, a son of Thomas E. Sr. and Claudia Cushman French. He graduated from Wethersfield (Conn.) High School. He was employed by Colt Industries of Hartford, Conn., as a supervisor and skilled metal polisher for 10 years.

He was married to Georgia E. Perkins in 1948 in Springfield, Mass. In the early '50s he and his wife were co-owners of Lily Bay House and Cabins at Moosehead Lake, Maine, and then they moved back to Springfield, where he was employed by Spaulding Sporting Goods in Chicopee, Mass. They moved to Amherst, Mass., where he was employed by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as a supervisor in the maintenance department for 20 years. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Kennebunkport in 1985.

He was a former member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst, where he and his wife were church youth leaders in the '60s and '70s. He was a member and former deacon of the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport. He was a 63-year member and past master of the Stepney Lodge of Wethersfield and Rocky Hill, Conn., and a member and chaplain of the Arundel Lodge 76 of Kennebunkport. He served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment in Kennebunkport for several years. He was a former certified Maine guide and was an avid gardener, fisherman and all-around outdoorsman.

He had just proudly completed four years in the pulmonary exercise program at the University of New England in Biddeford.

He was predeceased by his twin brother and sister, Howard and Hope French; another brother, Paul French; and another sister, Carol Signorelli.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Georgia P. French of Kennebunkport; a daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Jan F.) Dicey of Exeter, N.H.; four sisters, Hazel Patterson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Ethel Lombardo of Middletown, Conn., Jeanne Creighton of Tavares, Fla., and Paula Lattanzio of Rockville, Conn.; three goddaughters, Kathy Byce of Arizona, Christine Bouchard Brown of Sturbridge, Mass., and Jennifer Chartier of Westfield, Mass.; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and -nephews.

FRENCH - Thomas E. French Jr., 87, of Kennebunkport, Maine, died Jan. 17, 2002. Masonic services and memorial services will be held at a later date. Beverly A. Fillion

SOMERSWORTH - Beverly A. Shaheen Fillion, 65, of 1 Albert St., died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at her residence after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was the widow of the late Robert Fillion and a longtime resident of the Dover-Somersworth area.

Born Jan. 26, 1936, in Dover, she was a daughter of William "Nick" and Josephine (Skiep) Shaheen and a graduate of St. Mary School, Dover. From 1973 to the present, she was the president and founder of B&B Printing in Dover. She was a member of the St. George Maronite Church and will be dearly remembered as a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by three daughters, Kim Warren and Mrs. Robert (Lori) Wheaton, both of Dover, and Mrs. Kurt (Michelle) Robbins of Somersworth; one brother, William H. and his wife, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, of Madbury; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Peggy) Fennelly and Mrs. John (Mary) McKinnon, both of York, Maine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

FILLION - Beverly A. Shaheen Fillion, 65, of Somersworth, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services, "Liturgy of the Resurrection," will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the St. George Maronite Church, 25 Portland Ave., with the Rev. Bartholomew Leon, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dover Point. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 505 N. Ellsworth C. "Al" Cole

YORK, Maine - Ellsworth C. "Al" Cole, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at York Hospital after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Mobilia) Cole; children Christiana, Katrina, Erik, Jeffrey and Christopher Cole; and his mother, M. Judith Cole Rupnow, of Kittery.

He was predeceased by his father, Elmer E. Cole.

COLE - Ellsworth "Al" Cole, of York, Maine, died Jan. 20, 2002, in York. Private services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Portland Chapter, P.O. Box 426, Westbrook, ME 04092. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Howard W. Reynolds

LAKE HELEN, Fla. - Howard West Reynolds, formerly of York Village, Maine, died after a long illness on Dec. 23, 2001. He was born June 5, 1919, in Methuen, Mass., son of Charles and Edna Worsman Reynolds. He graduated from Edward F. Searles High School in Methuen, Mass., and received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Lincoln College of Chiropractic in Indiana.

Howard served in the Army in World War II and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge, he pursued his passion for art and music. He was a designer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 30 years. An accomplished saxophonist, he was in the Army band and continued playing in various bands throughout his life. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Helen Hoh Reynolds; an infant son, Robert; and Nell Reynolds, his second wife. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Turnbaugh and her husband, Michael, of Glens Falls, N.Y., and Judith Blanchard and her husband, Kirk, of Newtown, Conn. He leaves six loving grandchildren: Ryan Turnbaugh, Michelle Turnbaugh, Tristan Blanchard, Joseph Blanchard, Whitney Blanchard and Quincey Blanchard.

A family memorial service will be held in the spring in York, Maine. Contributions in his memory can be made to the First Parish Congregational Church in York, Maine.
