Frank H. Woodman

KITTERY, Maine - Frank H. Woodman, 72, of Remick's Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Feb. 4, 1929, he was a son of Earl and Pearl (Richards) Woodman. He attended local schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1947.

He and his loving wife of 54 years, Earline (Pease) Woodman, moved to Kittery, where they raised their family and made their home for 42 years. He enjoyed working on his property cutting wood. His yearly cut of 14 cord of wood, split and stacked, was mostly enjoyment and little work for him. He also enjoyed planting and caring for the large crop of raspberries that his wife put up every year.

He will be greatly missed by his friends, who knew him as both "Pup Woodman" and "Woody, the Goody Man," for his many years spent delivering baked goods for Cushman Bakeries and later for the Frito Lay Company.

His sharp wit and great sense of humor will be missed by his friends and his beloved family, who were his first and greatest love.

He is survived by his loving wife of Kittery; his daughter, Winnifred Linney and her husband, Bruce L., of Alfred, Maine; his son, Bruce W. Woodman of Kittery, Maine; his brothers, Ralph Woodman of Portsmouth and the Rev. Wesley Woodman of Union, Maine; his grandchildren, Laura Rex, Shawn Rex and Kevin Rex; and his great-grandchildren, Brittney, Jacob, Zakary and Emily.

WOODMAN - Frank H. Woodman, 72, of Remick's Lane, Kittery, Maine, died Jan. 20, 2002, at York Hospital. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. Wesley Woodman will officiate. Visiting will be private. Family flowers only are requested. Donations may be made in his memory to the New Hampshire SPCA, 104 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, NH 03885. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery.

Althea D. Berry

BARRINGTON - Althea Dorothy Berry 91, of 35 Winkley Pond Road, formerly of Rochester, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Sunbridge of Rochester, after a period of failing health.

She was born in Barrington on May 6, 1910, a daughter of Warren W. and Eva M. (Mattox) Berry.

She was a graduate of the Durham Junior High School in Durham and of Dover High School, Class of 1929. She also graduated from McIntosh Business School.

She was employed by the Rochester Welfare Department for 48 years and worked a few years there after her retirement.

She was a member of the Barrington Historical Society, a past master of the Madbury Grange, a member of Crown Point Grange, #65, and, for more than 65 years, the Eastern N.H. Pomona Grange, #2.

She enjoyed reading the daily newspapers, National Geographic Magazine and poetry. She liked the outdoors, sports and animals, especially cats.

She is survived by two sisters, Barbara B. Berry, of Rochester, and Christine F. Borodavchuk and brother-in-law Vladimir (Chuck) Borodavchuk, of Barrington; two nephews, Fred G. Ward Jr., of Portsmouth, and Warren R. Ward, of Stratham; one niece, Shirley Peatfield, of Danbury, Conn.; several grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces; and several cousins.

She is also survived by a longtime friend, Sarah E. Jones.

BERRY - Althea Dorothy Berry, 91, of 35 Winkley Pond Road, Barrington, and formerly of Rochester, died Jan. 20, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Friends are invited. Family flowers only. John M. Chase

KENSINGTON - John M. Chase, 88, of Amesbury Road, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth.

He was born Aug. 9, 1913, in Exeter, the son of the late Arthur W. and Mabel (Sanborn) Chase.

He was a graduate of Hampton Academy and lived in Hampton Falls until moving to Kensington in 1945. He worked for the Exeter Water Department for many years.

He was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church and a charter member of the Kensington American Legion Post #105. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army under the command of General Patton.

He loved gardening and was well known for his greenhouse.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred L. (Perfect) Chase; a daughter, Mary Marcia Chase; and four sisters, Ethel Peterson, Gertrude Young, Mary Junkins and Madelyn Smith.

Family members include several nieces and nephews.

CHASE - John M. Chase of Amesbury Road, Kensington, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. Services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service. Spring burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Kensington. If desired, donations may be made to the Kensington American Legion Post #105, Route 150, Kensington, NH 03827.

Therese A. D'Angelo

EXETER - Therese A. D'Angelo, 75, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare Inc.

She was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Amesbury, Mass., a daughter of the late Pierre and Claire (Roy) Nicol.

She was a summer resident of Exeter for the past 17 years and wintered in Ridge Manor, Fla., for 15 years. She also had resided in Burlington, Mass., for 13 years.

She was a 1944 graduate of St. Chretienne Academy in Salem, Mass. She received a B.A. in education from Boston College and an M.A. from Rivier College in Nashua.

In 1947 she entered the Order of the Sisters of St. Chretienne and taught in elementary and middle schools in Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She retired from the order in 1968 and continued teaching in Amesbury and Burlington, Mass., until her retirement in 1983.

In 1985, she and her husband moved to Exeter, where she became very active in church ministries and community activities. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter and of St. Anne's Church Ridge in Manor, Fla. She served as cantor and organist at both St. Michael's and St. Anne's for several years. She was a volunteer at the Exeter Hospital and a member of R.S.V.P. She also volunteered at St. Anthony's School in San Antonio, Fla., and was a substitute teacher.

She was a member of the Teachers Retirement Association and belonged to the French Club "Alouettes" and the "Eighth Grade Club" of 1940 of Amesbury's Sacred Heart School.

She was the wife of Arthur P. D'Angelo for nearly 26 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include one brother, Norman Nichols of Amesbury, Mass.; four sisters, Jeanette Nicol, Cecile Garand and Claire Nicol, all of Amesbury, and Rita Roy of California; four stepchildren, Patricia Meuse and Cheryl D'Angelo, both of Everett, Mass., Arthur D'Angelo of Newbury, Mass., and Deborah Butler of Haverhill, Mass; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Raymond, Henry, Alfred and Rene.

D'ANGELO - Therese A. D'Angelo, 75, of Exeter, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass. If desired, donations may be made to the St. Michael's Organ Restoration Fund, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Bertwell M. Ham Jr.

RYE - Bertwell M. "Bert" Ham Jr., 70, husband of Bertha M. (Cruz) Ham of 84 Garland Road, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth on April 10, 1931, a son of Bertwell M. Sr. and Emma (Boutilier) Ham.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1949, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1949 to 1953.

He was a self-employed floor sander for more than 45 years, sanding floors all over New England during the day and building homes at night. One of the real delights of his life was during the fall of every year when he worked at the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island refinishing the floors.

Besides his wife, Bertha, of 47 years, survivors include three daughters, Belinda Mulvey and her husband, James, of Rye, Betsy Bass and her husband, Thomas, of Rye, and Bonny Ham of Rye; four grandsons, Thomas and Benjamin Bass of Rye, and Dan and John Mulvey of Rye; a sister, Barbara Davis of Conway; a brother, Fred Ham of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Priscilla Ham, predeceased him.

HAM - Bertwell M. "Bert" Ham Jr., 70, of 84 Garland Road, Rye, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Shoals Marine Laboratory, G-14-E Stimson Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, Attn: Mary Benetti.

Madeline E. McInnes

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service for Madeline E. (Cole) McInnes, 82, of 115 South St., was held on Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. The Rev. Deacon Ginny Slawnwhite, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital chaplain, officiated. Accordionist was Gary Sredzienski.

Mary E. Swiezynski

EXETER - Mary E. Swiezynski, 81, of 83 Winter St., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home following a brief illness.

She was born in Exeter on June 8, 1920, the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (Ballentine) Morse.

She attended Robinson Female Seminary until moving to Dorchester, Mass., where she graduated from Dorchester High School. She moved back to Exeter, where she married her husband, Benjamin F. Swiezynski Jr., on June 8, 1946, in St. Michael's Church.

She worked for the Exeter Hospital for 25 years as a switchboard operator and personnel director and in admissions. Previous to this, she worked for the Callahan & Dining Oil Company as a bookkeeper.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and was active in St. Michael's School and a former president of the Parents and Friends Program. She was a member of the Exeter High School Boosters Club for basketball and football. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Family members include her husband of 55 years, Benjamin F. Swiezynski Jr. of Exeter; two sons, James M. Swiezynski of Wilmington, Mass., and Benjamin F. Swiezynski III of Exeter; three daughters, Cas Swiezynski of Exeter, Sandra J. Parks of Exeter, and Holly Swiezynski Riopel of Stratham; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur A. Morse.

SWIEZYNSKI - Mary E. Swiezynski, of 83 Winter St., Exeter, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

Else M. Drobish

BAREFOOT BAY, Fla. - Else M. Drobish, 69, of Barefoot Bay, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., and York, Maine, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Sebastian River Medical Center, Roseland, after a prolonged illness.

She was born Oct. 13, 1932, in Hakadal, Norway, and lived in Portsmouth and York for many years, then moved five years ago to Barefoot Bay.

Mrs. Drobish was the general manager for Sonesta Hotels-Charter Houses in Maine for several years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Sebastian, and attended the Sons of Norway and the Scandinavian Clubs of Barefoot Bay.

She was the wife of Jack Drobish for 24 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Steven Wallace of Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Anita Baker of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Thor-Bjorn Myhrhaug of Hakadal, Norway; three stepsons, Kevin Drobish of York, Maine, and Mark and Bill Drobish, both of Amsterdam, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

DROBISH - Else M. Drobish, 69, of Barefoot Bay, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth and York, Maine, died Jan. 14, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Union Congregational Church, Church Street, York Beach, Maine, with the Rev. William R. Baran officiating. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society for research. H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa FL 33612-9497.

Walter J. Desotelle Jr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Walter J. Desotelle Jr., 68, of 58 Granite Post Green, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Dover on Feb. 17, 1933, a son of Walter and Anna (Sweeney) Desotelle, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and a lifelong resident of the area.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean conflict.

He was employed by the Public Service Company of New Hampshire for 36 years, retiring from the Schiller Station power plant.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Rockingham Country Club, as well as the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Judith (Goss) Desotelle; children Mark Desotelle of North Berwick Maine, Jeff Desotelle of Durham, Susan Winter of Buffalo, N.Y., Terry Flood of Lynnfield, Mass., Scott Cadieux of Exeter, and Sheila Wardwell of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Zachary and Nicole Desotelle, and Christopher, Sarah and Allison Flood; a sister, Barbie Weston of Portsmouth; a brother, Paul Desotelle of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Desotelle.

DESOTELLE - Walter J. Desotelle Jr., 68, of 58 Granite Post Green, North Hampton, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Friends are invited. The will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Anne B. Murphy

HAMPTON - Anne B. Murphy, 85, a resident of the Seacoast Health Center since 1984 died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital, with her daughter at her side She was born in Cambridge, Mass., on May 5, 1916, daughter of parents of Polish and Lithuanian descent, the late Stanislaus and Alexandra Kopiwoda.

She had resided in Burlington, Mass., and had been a 36-year resident of Cambridge. She lived Portsmouth before moving to the Seacoast Health Center.

She enjoyed being a homemaker and was an avid crocheter.

She was the wife of the late Reginald Murphy, who died in 1985, and was predeceased by two brothers, Peter Kopiwoda and Paul Kopiwoda, and two sisters, Mary Sullivan and Sophie Ottoviano.

Family members include one daughter, Catherine A. Sellios and her husband, George, of Danvers, Mass.; two sons, George Murphy and his wife, Laureen, of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada, and William Murphy and his wife, Jane, of Nahant, Mass.; six grandchildren, Patrice, Allison, Caitlin, Robert and Collette Murphy and Tara Sellios; and several nieces and nephews.

MURPHY - Anne B. Murphy, 85, of Hampton, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Mary E. Swiezynski

EXETER - The funeral for Mary E. Swiezynski, 81, of 83 Winter St., Exeter, was held Thursday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. Richard E. St. Louis, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Denise Kelly was the organist and John Kelly was the soloist. The pall was placed on the casket by Mrs. Swiezynski's children, Cas, Sandra, Holly, James and Benjamin III. The readings were offered by Mary Dempsy and Becky Riopel, and the prayer of the faithful was by Scott Swiezynski. The gifts were presented to the altar by Mrs. Swiezynski's grandchildren Alexis, Amanda and Rachel. Altar servers were Joseph Latour, Al Markey and Brian Stinson. Pallbearers were all nine of Mrs. Swiezynski's grandchildren: Scott, Eric, Dan, Becky, Jennifer, Mary, Alexis, Amanda and Rachel. Private burial was in the Exeter Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. St. Louis.

John M. Chase

EXETER - The funeral for John M. Chase, 88, of Amesbury Road, Exeter, was held Thursday in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. The Rev. David P. Lennox, pastor of the Kensington Congregational Church, officiated. The Legion services were by the Kensington American Legion Post #105, under the direction of Newell Eaton, commander, and Arthur Wheeler, chaplain. Spring burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Kensington.

Irene A. Stokel

PORTSMOUTH - Irene A. Stokel, 76, of 83 Peverly Hill Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 1, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Zeda and Stella (Kalinski) Stokel.

She was retired from the technical publications department of Textron Industries and was a communicant of St. James Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley A. Matthews and her husband, Al, of North Andover, Mass.; grandchildren Tracey Salois and her husband, David, Tricia Toshach, and John T. Matthews; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mary Biernat of Gary, Ind., Frances Nichols of Miami, Fla., and Stella Stokel, Patricia Stokel, and Nancy Stokel, all of Portsmouth; a brother, Phillip Stokel and his wife, Lorinda, of Concord; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, George Stokel, Edward Stokel, and Joseph Stokel, and a sister, Florence Boughman.

STOKEL - Irene A. Stokel, 76, of Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Church. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Bernard McAfee

ELIOT, Maine - Bernard McAfee, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Service details are incomplete; a full obituary will appear in a later edition of the Herald. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Annette Majewski

KITTERY, Maine - Annette (Lawanawicz) Majewski, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Harbor Home in York, Maine. Born Dec. 26, 1917, in Du Bois, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John and Stella (Sokoski) Lawanawicz.

She attended local schools and later in life moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she married Stanley Majewski in 1939. Her husband predeceased her in 1996.

She worked as a retail clerk at Mays Department Store in Brooklyn until she and her husband moved to Portsmouth, N.H. In 1986 they moved to Kittery, where they settled.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidering. She also loved playing all types of card games and doing crossword puzzles. But whatever she was doing at the time had to be put on hold when her two favorite television programs, "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune," came on.

She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Majewski and her husband, William, of Kittery; and her beloved grandchild, Victoria Anastasia, also of Kittery. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

There will be no services or visitation hours scheduled. A private family graveside service will be held at Orchard Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery.
