Althea D. Berry

BARRINGTON - Funeral services for Althea Dorothy Berry, 91, of 35 Winkley Pond Road, and formerly of Rochester, were held on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. James Frase officiated. In attendance were representatives from SunBridge of Rochester.

Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Barrington, in the spring.

Bertwell M. Ham Jr.

RYE - Well-attended funeral services for Bertwell M. "Bert" Ham Jr., 70, of 85 Garland Road, Rye, were held on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Graham Alvord officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Bert's daughter, Bonnie Ham, and nephews Harold Ham and Bob Rutherford.

In attendance were a large delegation of friends and former business associates.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Mr. Alvord.

Bearers were Tom Bass, Tommy Bass, Ben Bass, Jim Mulvey, Dan Mulvey, John Mulvey and Bob Rutherford

Bernard McAfee

ELIOT, Maine - Bernard McAfee, 81, of Eliot, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Mr. McAfee was born July 4, 1919, in Newport, Maine, the son of the late William and Bessy (Derrah) McAfee.

He attended local schools and then enlisted in the Navy, where he served his country in the North African Campaign, and took an active part in the surrender of Dakar. He later attended McIntosh College.

He was married to the former Margaret Monteith on Sept. 27, 1943, in Lynn, Mass.

Mr. McAfee worked for some time at the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass. He later worked 15 years at New Hampshire Welding Supply Company where he retired in 1980.

Bernard was a very active member of his church and was loved by his church family. He was a deacon at The Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery, which was the former Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth. He spent many hours working on various church affairs with the pastor. He also sang in the church choir.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, and his son Bernard Earl McAfee of Portsmouth.

There will be a service at The Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery, with burial to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Bernice W. Jordan

YORK, Maine - Bernice W. Jordan, 95, of Bayview Ave., York, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the SunBridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H., after many years of declining health.

She was born Sept. 28, 1906, in Salem, Mass., daughter of Milan F. and Anabel (Bolton) Taylor. She graduated from Salem High School and Burdett Business College in Lynn, Mass.

Mrs. Jordan worked in the Parker Brothers Game Factory in Salem, sawing the famous Pastime Puzzles, and later as a secretary to a lawyer in Salem. She also had worked as a secretary in the Cushman Bakery office in Lynn.

She lived in Florida for many years with her husband, Harold A. Jordan, after his retirement.

After his death, she moved back to New England and made her home with her sister in York.

She became ill and went to live at Sentry Hill in York Harbor. From there, she went to the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery, and later to the SunBridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Swampscott, Mass.

Mrs. Jordan was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Harold, and by two sisters, Winifred Howard Mello and Elizabeth Howard.

She is survived by her sister, Grace Tabor of York; nephews, David Howard of Cambridge, Mass., and Richard Howard of Concord, Calif.; nieces, Laurie Cherry of Westford, Mass., and Dawn Hall of Mesquite, Texas; stepson, Richard Jordan of Arizona; several step-grandchildren; and great nieces and nephews.

JORDAN - Bernice W. Jordan of Bayview Ave., York, Maine, died Jan. 25, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Therese A. D'Angelo

EXETER - The funeral for Therese A. D'Angelo, 75, of Exeter, was held on Friday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. Richard E. St. Louis, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Denise Kelly was the organist and John Kelly was the soloist. The readings were by Lucretia Ganley. The gifts were presented to the altar by Richard Gatley and Reinie Gallapean. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass., with committal prayers by Rev. St. Louis. Pallbearers were Pierre Garand, Paul Garand, Andre Garand, Alfred Nicol, Raymond Nicol and Roger Nicol.

Edith M. Helfen

ELIOT, Maine - Edith M. Helfen, 74, of 16 Pleasant St., Eliot, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, N.H., after a short courageous fight with cancer.

Born Nov. 24, 1927, in Eliot, she was the daughter of C. Edison and Elsie (Burrows) Cole.

She attended Eliot schools and Macintosh College. She has been a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Eliot and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Edith worked for many years in the banking industry. She started as a teller for the Maine National Bank located at the Portsmouth Navy Yard. Later she was assistant treasurer of the Portsmouth Co-Operative Bank. She retired many years ago to enjoy her family and friends.

She enjoyed yard sales, gardening, housework and holidays. Her greatest enjoyment was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, L. Arnold Martin, and her brother David Cole.

Edith is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jack B. Helfen; two daughters, Linda Pritchett and Kenny Edwards of Shapleigh, Maine, and Beverly Hooper and her husband Bob of Eliot; two stepsons, Michael Helfen and his wife Donna of East Sandwich, Mass., William Helfen and his wife Emilyrae of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters Brenda Becker of Eliot, and Alison Pappas of Eliot; her brother Alden Cole of Fla.; four grandsons, Christopher Pritchett and his wife Lisa, Preston Pritchett and his wife Kathy Hayes, Heath Hooper and his wife Karin, and Jason Hooper; five step-children, Amanda Withers and her husband Matt, Jordan Helfen and his wife Katie, Alex Helfen, David Helfen and his wife Nikki, and Stephen Helfen; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

HELFEN - Edith M. Helfen, 74, of 16 Pleasant St., Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 24, 2002. A time of sharing and remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the York County Visiting Nurses Association, 15 Industrial Park Road, Saco, ME 04072. Arrangement are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Doris L. Kenison

HAMPTON - Doris L. Kenison, 88, of Lafayette Road, Hampton, died Jan. 23, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Kenison was born Oct. 24, 1913.

She was a former resident of Conway, N.H. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She also resided in the Boston area where she worked as a secretary and a bank clerk.

Mrs. Kenison was predeceased by her husband, Arthur E. Kenison Jr., who died in 1997.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Center Conway Cemetery, Conway, N.H.

The Edmund Fournier Funeral Home of North Woodstock is in charge of arrangements.

Doris M. Lander

CAMDEN, Maine - Doris Mary (Hutchins) Lander, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002 at Shore Village Nursing Center in Rockland.

Born in Kittery on Nov. 24, 1920, she was the daughter of Ralph and Rose (Gallant) Hutchins. She married Gilbert A. Lander in Kittery in 1938. she moved from Kittery to Camden in 1997 to be near her daughter and had resided at 63 Washington St. for two years.

She had been a communicant of St. Rayfield's Catholic Church in Kittery for many years. She enjoyed her family and watching her grandchildren grow. She loved to walk and be near the water, especially spending time at West Pond.

Surviving is her daughter, Beverly Nolan and her husband, James, of Camden; two brothers, Raymond Hutchins and his wife, Jackie of Berwick, and Ernest Hutchins and his wife, Lee, of Lantana, Fla.; grandchildren, Chris Nolan and his wife, Heidi, Jennifer Shotwell and her husband, Chris, of Camden, Sharlene Lander and Todd Lander of Kittery; and great-grandchildren, Kyle Nolan, Aaron Nolan, and Hannah Nolan, all of Camden, who always made Mrs. Lander smile.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert A. Lander, who died in 1997, and her son, Gilbert Lander, who died in 1988.

LANDER - Doris M. Lander, 81, died Jan. 12, 2002. An hour of visiting will be held beginning at 9 a.m., today, at the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden, Maine. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., today, at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union St., Camden, with the Rev. Eugene Gaffey officiating. Spring burial will be in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. The family suggests memorial donations be made in her memory to Sixty Three Washington Street Senior Home, 63 Washington St., Camden, ME 04843.

Annette Majewski

KITTERY, Maine - A graveside committal service and burial was held Saturday at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery for Annette Majewski, who passed away on Jan. 24, 2002. Deacon Claude Spencer of St. Christopher's Catholic Church in York recited committal prayers. Mrs. Majewski's daughter, Eleanor, spoke of her mother's unconditional and abundant love, as well as fond memories of her mother. A time of remembrance and reflection followed the service at Eleanor's home.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Henry L. deWildt

ALFRED, Maine - Henry L. "Bud" deWildt, 75, of Camp Road in Alfred, formerly of Eliot, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Greenwood Center in Sanford, after a period of failing health.

Born in Eliot, June 23, 1926, he was the son of Louis and Anna (Krook) deWildt. He attended local schools, graduating from Eliot High School, Class of 1944. He served his country as a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He and his loving wife of more than 50 years, Elinor (Megert) deWildt, owned and operated the deWildt Poultry Farm on Hanscom Road in Eliot for more than 38 years.

An active member of his community, he served on many local boards in Eliot, including the Board of Selectman and Budget Committee. He was very active with the youth of the community, serving as a Boy Scout Master of Troop 340 in Eliot and as a Little League coach. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Eliot and the Eliot American Legion Post 188.

After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Alfred where they made their home, enjoying the community and their family.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons and their spouses, Louis H. and Joyce deWildt of Wilton, Warren P. and Abigail deWildt of Wells, and John D. and Kathleen deWildt of Barrington, N.H.; grandchildren, Victor deWildt, Angela Caler, Cynthia Dellarma, Kevin deWildt, Jason deWildt, Keri Ann deWildt and Kimberly Marie deWildt; five great-grandchildren; and three nephews.

deWildt - Henry L. "Bud" deWildt, 75, of Camp Road, Alfred, Maine, died Jan. 26, 2002. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. Friends and family may call on Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made in his memory to the William Fogg Library, Old Road, Eliot, ME 03903; or the Alfred Rescue Squad, Alfred, ME 04002. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Norman G. Paré

HAMPTON FALLS - Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Norman G. Paré, M.D., 68, of 11 Baldwin Place, an obstetrician and gynecologist for many years, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born March 12, 1933, in Manchester, the son of the late Ernest A. and Yvonne (Poisson) Paré.

Dr. Paré was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Manchester, Class of 1951; Manhattan College, New York, N.Y., in 1955; and the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1959.

He served his internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., from 1959 to 1960 and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Chelsea/Boston, Mass., from 1962 to 1965.

From 1968 to 1982 his private practice took him to Beverly Hospital, Beverly, Mass. In 1982 he joined the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1996 as a colonel with 40 years total government service. He was chief of staff at Eglin Air Force Base Hospital in Florida prior to his retirement.

He served in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm from 1990 to 1995 and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award and Outstanding Unit Award.

Col. Paré was stationed and lived in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for a number of years. He also resided in Topsfield, Mass., before moving to Hampton Falls in 1995.

He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton and St. Mary's Church in Fort Walton Beach.

He was the husband of Margaret (Griffin) Paré for 42 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Norman G. "Jerry" Paré Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Georgetown, Mass., Michelle O'Brien and her husband, Timothy, of Hampton Falls, and Matthew J. Paré and his wife, Anne, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Doucet of Manchester; and nieces and nephews.

PARÉ - Col Norman G. Paré, M.D. (USAF Ret.), 68, of 11 Baldwin Place, Hampton Falls, died Jan. 26, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. After cremation, burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hampton Falls. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Oncology Clinic of Exeter Hospital, 10 Buzell Ave., Exeter, NH 03833; or to a charity of one's choice.

Ina E. Perkins

DOVER - Ina Elizabeth "Betty" Perkins, 80, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her residence.

She was born April 6, 1921, in Swampscott, Mass., the daughter of the late Leroy Herbert and Beulah May (Gerini) Phillips. She moved to Dover at a very young age and attended local schools. Later in life, she enrolled at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where she majored in occupational therapy. While at college, she became active in a sorority. She also attended McIntosh College, where she majored in secretarial and business-office studies. She was very proficient as a stenographer and was an exceptional typist. Over the years, she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machine operator. She was a loyal employee, with a strong positive work ethic. She was proud to work at the shipyard; it was her part of giving back something to the country she was proud to live in.

In her leisure time, she was active with the American Occupational Association. She loved collecting antiques and other collectibles. Over the years she had collected a number of old carousel horses, which she truly treasured. She was very proud of her Phillips family heritage and long-standing connection with the B&M Railroad in this area. She acquired and maintained a large collection of model railroads, many of them depicting the B&M. This collection was a shrine, honoring her family and her family's history.

She looked forward to spending time at her beach cottage, called "The Sea Witch," and took many walks on York Beach, enjoying the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. She also loved chocolate and created many delicious chocolate pastries for friends and family. She was quoted many times as saying: "There is only one flavor in this world, and that is chocolate." She was an avid Boston Celtics fan and was a really big fan of former Celtic great Larry Bird.

She loved listening to jazz and over the years had the opportunity to meet some of her favorite jazz musicians and singers in person. She especially loved listening to Frank Sinatra.

But above all things, her favorite pleasure was to adore and be with her loving son, Mark of Dover. She never called her son Mark but instead called him "Steck" or Phillip, which, according to Mark, was an honor he will cherish forever.

Besides her son, she is survived by a stepson, Edward C. Perkins of Newbury, Mass.; a stepbrother, Forrest Quimby of New York; and many cousins, friends and acquaintances from the Candia, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, areas. She was predeceased by a daughter, Deidre.

PERKINS - Ina Elizabeth "Betty" Perkins, 80, of Dover, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home, with her son by her side. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Friends may gather for a time of visitation from 10 to 11 on Wednesday morning. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in First Baptist Cemetery, Kittery Point. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Pauline A. Moulton

ROLLINSFORD - Pauline A. (Garland) Moulton, 102, formerly of Rye, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Meriden Nursing Home in Meriden, Conn. She was born in North Hampton on Oct. 27, 1899, the daughter of the late Charles L. A. and Alice (Jones) Garland, and was a graduate of Hampton Academy in Hampton, in the Class of 1918.

She was a member of the Rye Congregational Church; Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star in Portsmouth; and a former member of the Rye Women's Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gilman W. Moulton. Survivors include two daughters, Anita Wentworth and her husband, David, of Rollinsford, and Priscilla A. Murray and her husband, Robert, of Woodbury, Conn.; six grandchildren, Mark Wentworth of Rollinsford, Matthew Wentworth of Tampa, Fla., Bryan Wentworth of Rollinsford, Scott Trefethen of Portland, Ore., Tracy Trefethen of Tempe, Ariz., and Christine McKeel of Aiken, S.C.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

MOULTON - Pauline A. (Garland) Moulton, 102, of Rollinsford, and formerly of Rye, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, with Order of Eastern Star services by Rivermouth Chapter #54 at 6:45 p.m. A funeral service will follow visitation at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rye Public Library, 581 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870, or to the Memorial Gift Coordinator, Bektash Shriners, P.O. Box 7252, Concord, NH 03301-7252, for the Shriners Hospital for Children-Boston Unit.

Anne B. Murphy

HAMPTON - The funeral for Anne B. Murphy, 85, resident of the Seacoast Health Center for the past 18 years, who died Jan. 22, 2002, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. James Delaney, pastor of the Salem Bible Church, officiated.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by Pastor Delaney.

Marcelle T. Rioux

GREENLAND - Mrs. Marcelle T. (Didier) Rioux, 65, of 342 Bayside Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Versaille, France, on March 8, 1936, the daughter of the late Andre and Jeanne Didier. Mrs. Rioux was a professional seamstress and was formerly employed at Courtney Cleaners in York, Maine. She was a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

Besides her husband Armand Rioux, survivors include three daughters, Rita Depietro of Jacksonville, N.C., Patricia Finch of Alton Bay, and Jane Rioux of Annapolis, Md.; five grandchildren; a brother, Jean Didier of Dumarjos, France; and several nieces and nephews.

RIOUX - Mrs. Marcelle T. (Didier) Rioux, 65, of 342 Bayside Road, Greenland, died Jan. 26, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Flowers will be accepted.
