Rosemary S. Callahan

ROCHESTER - Rosemary S. Callahan, 74, of Rochester Manor died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Callahan was born on Aug. 16, 1927, in Portland, Maine, daughter of the late Ralph and Ermina (Smith) Segars. She graduated from Deering High School in Portland in 1945. She moved to Portsmouth in 1954, where she was a resident for more than 40 years. She worked for Data General for more than years.

She was a lifelong naturalist and bird watcher and passed along her love of nature to her family.

Survivors include two sons, Edmund Callahan of Kittery, Maine, and Lee Salem of Leawood, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Arthur Haley Sr.

EPPING - Arthur "Buster" Haley Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, after a long illness.

He was born on May 31, 1918, in Salisbury, Mass., son of John and Belline (Lanouette) Haley. He lived in Amesbury, Mass., for many years before moving to Kensington, where he lived for 30 years before moving to Epping five years ago.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 105 Kensington. After retiring from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972, he drove a school bus for the town of Exeter and was named Bus Driver of the Year on Feb. 2, 1988.

He was a past member of the Warren Masonic Lodge, Amesbury, Mass.; Fraternal Order of Eagles; American Legion Post 105 Kensington; and life member of the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Irene Christoffersen Haley.

He is survived by a son, Arthur Haley Jr. of East Kingston; a daughter, Karen Pawlak of Epping; a sister, Marion Heald of Merrimac, Mass.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

HALEY - Arthur "Buster" Haley Sr., 83, of Epping, died Feb. 5, 2002. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass. Flowers are acceptable.

Lewis E. Hersom

FREMONT - Lewis E. Hersom, 51, of Main Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 15, 1950, in Exeter, son of the late Myron L. and Florida (Laramie) Hersom.

He was raised in Exeter and was a graduate of Exeter High School. He spent the last 22 years living in Fremont.

He worked at Chemtan Inc. in Exeter as a lab technician for the past 25 years.

In addition to his wife of 32 years, Diane (Bannon) Hersom of Fremont, survivors include one son, Cori Hersom of Allenstown, N.H.; two sisters, Aurise Grossenbacher of West Jefferson, Ohio, and Myra Marston of Exeter; two brothers, Eugene Hersom of Rochester, and Edward Hersom of Durham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Tobi J. Hersom, who died April 18, 1994.

HERSOM - Lewis E. Hersom, 51, of Main Street, Fremont, died Feb. 6, 2002. A time of visitation with the family will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Liver Foundation, N.E. Chapter, 88 Winchester St., Newton, MA 02461.

William J. Miles

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for William Jesse Miles, who died on Jan. 29, 2002, was held on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, with the Rev. Gordon Allen officiating.

In attendance were family, friends, neighbors and parishioners of his church, St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H.

The service continued at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, with the Rev. Allen offering committal prayers and blessing the place of rest. The U.S. Navy presented Beverly Miles with a veterans flag in recognition of his unselfish service to his country.

Mark H. Loftus

WELLS, Maine - Mark H. Loftus, 40, of Post Road, died Feb. 4, 2002, at his residence.

He was born May 3, 1961, in Coos Bay, Ore., a son of John H. and Diane (Urwick) Loftus. He attended Molalla Union High School in Molalla, Ore. He also attended Clackamas Community College in Oregon, Hennepin Technical College in Minnesota, and York County Technical College in Wells.

He enjoyed music, camping, fishing, wrestling, NASCAR racing and family activities.

He was predeceased by his sister, Karen Ann Loftus, and by his grandparents, Richard and Lida Urwick, formerly of York.

Survivors include his mother, Diane Loftus of York; his father, John H. Loftus of Roseburg, Ore.; two brothers, William A. Loftus and John R. Loftus, both of York; one sister, Alena L. Loftus of York; one niece; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

LOFTUS - Mark H. Loftus, 40, of Post Road, Wells, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Wells. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on today at the funeral home.

Ruth L. White

PORTSMOUTH - Ruth L. (Collins) White, 79, died on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at The Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, after a lengthy battle with cancer and heart disease.

She was born April 22, 1922, in Chelsea, Mass., daughter of the late William and Clarice Maude Collins.

Valedictorian of her Chelsea High School class, she was always most at home in a world of words. Winner of numerous spelling bees, and a professional secretary, she corresponded with and uplifted the spirits of many a U.S. soldier during World War II until meeting and marrying one of its heroes, John W. White - a Ranger and Distinguished Service Cross recipient.

Together, they raised a family in Chelsea, Jamaica Plain, and Everett, Mass., where she went on to become a nurse's aide.

Always an accomplished poet, she was a regular contributor to the old Boston Post, among many other publications. "You can't take your memories with you," she once wrote: "They're God's gift to you while on earth. There are love scenes to busy your sadness and old dreams to mirror your worth. You can't take your memories with you; each one has a duty to do - to strengthen your ladder to Heaven ... where old loves are waiting for you."

She was predeceased by her husband.

Survivors include three children, Nancy Araujo of Portland, Maine, William White of Eliot, Maine, and Richard White of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Batten of Chelsea, Mass.; a brother, William Collins of Long Island, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie Beth; a brother, Edward Collins, formerly of Chelsea, Mass.; and many dear, departed friends.

WHITE - Ruth L. (Collins) White, 79, of Portsmouth, died Feb. 2, 2002. A spring service will be held at the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Everett, Mass. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, 258 Chestnut St., Chelsea, MA 02150.

Natalie G. Stevens

WELLS, Maine - Funeral services for Mrs. Natalie Geneva (Hodgdon) Stevens, 76, of Butternut Trail, Wells, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., on Saturday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. A poem, "The Flight of The Angel," was written and read by Mrs. Stevens' grandson, Mark J. Stevens Jr.

Bearers were Albert April and Mrs. Stevens' five sons, Edward F. Stevens, John E. Stevens, Duane E. Stevens, M. Joseph Stevens, and Richard D. Stevens.

American Legion Auxiliary services were held at the funeral home Friday evening by Unit No. 47 of Rollinsford, N.H., including Bettie Trundy, president; Agnes Roussin, No. 2 vice president; Loretta Alty, chaplain; Loretta Keefe, sergeant at arms; Joan Doyon; Marge Bailey; and Irene Allard.

Burial will be in Newington Cemetery, Newington, N.H., in the spring.

Mark Bateman

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held for Mark "Moose" Bateman on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiating.

In attendance were his family, friends and members of a number of motorcycle clubs including the Iron Horsemen, which he had been associated with for more than 25 years.

The service continued at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, N.H., where the Rev. Avery offered prayers over the specially designed "Flame" casket adorned with a floral replica of his pot-bellied pig "Stroker" in which he was laid to rest.

Friends and family gathered in Rye, N.H., following the services for a time of sharing and remembrance.

Gary D. Gobar

HAMPTON - Gary D. Gobar, 61, of 16 Josephine Drive died Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in St. Paul, Minn., August 13, 1940, the son of the late Donald and Woodyce (Wiseman) Gobar. Mr. Gobar graduated from high school in St. Paul in 1957.

Upon graduation, Mr. Gobar was activated into service where he served with the Navy in Vietnam as a senior chief commissaryman. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Gobar moved to Hampton in 1987, and was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the vestry, was active with the soup kitchen as chef and also assisted in the roles of Sunday school.

He enjoyed freshwater bass fishing, was a member of the Raymond Bass Masters and also the N.H. Let's Go Fishing program.

He was predeceased by a brother, David Gobar.

He was the husband of Carol (Campbell) for 36 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include four children, Donald L. Gobar of Dayton, Ohio, Scott A. Gobar of Brunswick, Maine, Gail D. Gobar of Moyock, N.C., and Gretchen D. Gobar of Hampton; six grandchildren, Amber, David, A.J., Alex, Danielle, and Alden; three brothers, Bruce Gobar of Reno, Nev., Michael Gobar of Minneapolis, Minn., Brian Gobar of St. Cloud, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

GOBAR - Gary D. Gobar, 61, of 16 Josephine Drive, Hampton, died February 7, 2002. Services will be at noon on Monday in the Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. Following cremation, burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Gary D. Gobar to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High Street, Hampton, NH 03842.

Rodney G. Brock

GREENLAND - Rodney G. Brock, 62, husband of Priscilla (Lessard) Brock and son of the late Rodney E. and Gladys Brock of Claremont, N.H., died suddenly on Feb. 7, 2002.

He was born in Claremont on September 11, 1939. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1957 and went on to the University of New Hampshire. He graduated in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Mr. Brock served in the United States Army Artillery as a commissioned officer for 1961-1963, entered the Army Reserve, serving from 1964-1968, and received his honorable discharged as Captain, United States Reserve in 1968.

He served as president/CEO of Service Federal Credit Union, then Pease Federal Credit Union and now Service Credit Union, Portsmouth, N.H. from December 1963 through December 1994. He was also a member of the Defense Credit Union Council Board of Directors from 1984 to 1993. He served in various officer positions to include secretary, second vice chairman and first vice chairman, a position he last held just prior to his retirement form the board.

He was very active in the Portsmouth community, having served on the Foundation for Seacoast Health as president and treasurer; the Portsmouth Hospital as incorporator, trustee and treasurer; The Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in the positions of director, vice president and member; was a director and later president of the United Way from 1972 - 1975; was appointed by former Senator Warren Rudman in 1983 to the Military Service Academy Selection Board, where he served many years; was an honorary squadron commander at Pease Air Force Base from 1980 - 1990; active in the Seacoast Military Affairs Council as a member, chairman and secretary; Portsmouth Lions Club director, president and member; and was an honorary member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church, Portsmouth, and served as Church Council member, deacon and trustee. He was an active participant in the restoration of the North Church steeple.

Besides his wife of 40 years, he is survived by his children, Richard S. Brock and wife, Michelle, of Georgetown, Mass., Robin L. Brock and David Hamel of Somersworth, Donald J. Brock and wife, Nancy, of Newburyport, Mass., and grandchildren Benjamin, Jonathan, and Zachary Brock of Georgetown. Survivors also include sisters and brother-in-laws, Betty A. and James J. McGuire, No. Berwick, Maine, Joan M. and Robert Caron, Rye, and Beverly J. and David Aubuchon, Westminster, Mass. Also, several nieces and nephews.

BROCK - Rodney G. Brock, 62, of Greenland, died suddenly Feb. 7, 2002. Memorial calling hours will be Sunday, February 10, 2002 from 2-4 p.m. at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, and a memorial service will be held Monday, February 11, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Congregational Church, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Helen L. Agrafiotis

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Helen L. Agrafiotis, 94, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002.

Mrs. Agrafiotis died at the home of her son, Peter G. Agrafiotis, and of Janice Plourde, in Cape Neddick, where she had gone to live and convalesce from an illness that nearly took her life four years before. She recovered remarkably from that illness and enjoyed her residency there, attended also by her husband, Peter J. Agrafiotis, who until two years ago at the age of 94, drove and lived independently nearby in Portsmouth, and by her daughter Sandy, and son-in-law Carl Phersson, who live in South Berwick. Peter J. Agrafiotis is currently a resident in assisted living at Langdon Place in Dover, N.H. Helen in her last years indulged in her greatest passion, that of reading, stating once that being thus cared for in Cape Neddick was "better than being at home; it was like being in school," until successive eye problems robbed her of enough vision for this activity last spring.

Helen Loumos was born in Boston in 1907, the second youngest of nine children. She graduated from Belmont High School and Vespa George School of Business. Before her marriage she had worked as a seamstress for Amelia Erhart, as an illustrator for the Rust Craft Co. and as a demonstrator of business machines for the Remington Rand Corporation.

During her married years in Manchester, N.H., she did volunteer work at the Manchester Girl's Club and at the Hanover Hill Nursing home. She and her husband retired to South Florida in 1972 and remained there until 1992 when Hurricane Andrew demolished their home. This prompted a return to New Hampshire, where they had maintained a summer residence at Rye Beach, to take up year-round residence in Portsmouth close to their children.

Helen is also survived by her sister, Virginia Loumos, 96, of Washington, D.C.; her brother William Loumos, 97, of Short Hills, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

Frederick J. Pitchforth

NORTH HAMPTON - Dr. Frederick J. Pitchforth, 78 of 146 Exeter Road, formerly of High Street, Exeter, died Friday, February 8, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.

Raised in Amesbury, Mass., Dr. Pitchforth was born in Newburyport on August 30, 1923, the son of the late Frederick C. and Margaret (Antell) Pitchforth. He had resided in Exeter for 47 years, coming from Amesbury, and had moved to North Hampton last week.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as assistant gunners mate on board the USS Boise in both the European and Pacific theaters.

Dr. Pitchforth operated a chiropractic office in Exeter for more than 50 years, retiring in June of 2001.

He was a graduate of Amesbury High School and a 1947 graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractic. Dr. Pitchforth was an early member and active supporter of Exeter's Democratic Party and served the town as a poll worker for many years. He was also an active member of the Exeter United Methodist Church.

Family members include his wife of 54 years, Geraldine L. Pitchforth of North Hampton; two sons, Barry J. Pitchforth and his wife, Judy, of Arundel, Maine, and William J. Pitchforth of North Hampton; a daughter, Joy A. Cross of North Hampton; and seven grandchildren.

PITCHFORTH - Dr. Frederick J. Pitchforth, 78 of 146 Exeter Road, North Hampton, formerly of High Street, Exeter, died Friday, February 8, 2002. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, at the Exeter United Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury in the spring. Assisting with the arrangements was the Stockbridge Funeral Home of Exeter.

Julie Trowbridge

EAST LYME, Conn. - Julie Trowbridge, 75, of 5 Wayne Drive, East Lyme, Conn., formerly of North Hampton, N.H., died Jan. 29, 2002, in New London, Conn.

She married Philip Trowbridge on Nov. 30, 1957.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Richard M. Trowbridge of Ledyard, Conn., Philip D. Trowbridge Jr. of Old Lyme, Conn., and James C. Trowbridge of Brookhaven, N.Y.; three daughters, Kathleen Wilts of East Lyme, Lori McManus of Old Lyme and Sandra Healy of Stratham, N.H.; two brothers, George W. Cuff of Forrestburg, N.Y., and John D. Cuff of Kanapolis, N.C.; a sister, Charlotte D. Cuff of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and 13 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandchild, Larry Wilts.

A graveside service was held in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Broad Street, New London. The Thomas L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, Niantic, Conn., was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Donnell

OGUNQUIT, Maine - Mrs. Patricia Donnell, 63, of Ogunquit, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. Born on March 17, 1939, in York, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Harry Horning.

She attended local schools in York and graduated from York High School. She went on to college in the Boston area, where she studied nursing. She became a licensed practical nurse, and over the years, she worked as a private-duty nurse through the Seacoast area.

In her leisure time she loved the great outdoors, taking walks and camping. She loved to travel and over the years, she had camping trips and expeditions in Alabama, Hawaii and Gettysburg, Pa. She was also an avid bird hunter. She always loved to spend time going lobstering with her dear, loving, longtime companion, Pete Apgar, of Ogunquit.

She was married to Robert Donnell Sr., who predeceased her in 1976. She loved to spend time with her family and her grandchildren.

Besides her mother, Margaret (Adams) Horning of Portsmouth, she is survived by her three sons, Robert, Jeffrey and Timothy Donnell, all of York; three brothers, Russell Horning of Edgewater, Fla. and Harry and James Horning, both of Kittery.

She will be deeply missed by her cherished five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Jane Jacobs.

There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.
