Leslie Howard

ELIOT, Maine - Leslie Howard, 66, of Baran Place, 64 Beech Road, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at his home after a period of failing health.

Born on March 7, 1935, in Liverpool, England, he was a son of George and May (Mills) Howard and attended local schools.

He performed his National Service with the Army in Egypt.

He and his wife of more than 45 years, Barbara (Sloan) Howard, moved to the United States more than 22 years ago. He proudly became a U.S. citizen and settled in the Seacoast.

Employed by the D.G. O'Brien Company in Seabrook, N.H., he enjoyed his job as a tool and die maker.

His true joy was the time spent with his family. Forgoing other pastimes, he and his wife chose to enjoy watching their children grow and spending time with their family. As his family grew and moved closer to them, he was able to enjoy his six grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Eliot; two daughters, Barbara Call of Rochester, N.H., and Lesley Hanslope and her husband, Ian, of Westboro, Mass.; a son, Andrew and his wife, Racine Howard, of Portsmouth, N.H.; a brother, George Howard of England; and many nieces and nephews.

HOWARD - Leslie Howard, 66, of Baran Place, 64 Beech Road, Eliot, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. Friends and family are invited to visit with his family from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine, where a funeral will be held at noon following the visitation. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Portsmouth Home Health Care and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit #11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Jack Brown Beard Sr.

NEW CASTLE - Jack Brown Beard Sr., 73, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was the husband of Rebecca C. Beard.

He was born Feb. 12, 1929, a son of Grace Eugenia (Jones) and Olowish Boone Beard. He was born and raised in Jackson, Tenn.

He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1951 and started work in the Design Division of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In 1953 he joined the Navy, graduating from Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served on board two LSDs and on the staff of the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Mariannas, in Guam. He returned to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in April 1957. Four months later, he was detailed to BuShips, in Washington, D.C., for one year and worked on the design of the USS George Washington, the Navy's first nuclear fleet ballistic missile submarine.

In 1963 he was promoted to Design Division, Mock-Up Section Head, at Portsmouth. In 1967 he was assigned to a new submarine technical planning division being formed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In 1968 he was promoted to Engineering Branch Head in the new division. The new division (PeraSS) was later renamed SUBMEPP. He was one of the first "Plank Owners" and when he retired was the last of the original group still working in SUBMEPP. He retired in 1992 after 41 years of service.

He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of New Hampshire.

He received numerous commendations from the Naval Sea Systems Command. He was recognized for the experience, diligence and professionalism that he applied to his work. He was commended for helping to build a nucleus of young engineers into a knowledgeable, capable and motivated system engineering group, who were recognized and praised throughout the Navy. He was presented an award for dedicated and loyal service to his country and to the U.S. Navy Submarine Service and for his outstanding contributions to the Navy.

He was a longtime member of the Middle Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and had served as the church moderator and Sunday school superintendent as well as on the Board of Deacons. He was an engineer in his vocation and an artist in his avocation.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Lisa Beard of Portsmouth; his son, Jack Brown Beard Jr., daughter-in-law Dr. Rebecca Snider, and granddaughter Martha Beard, of Candia; his sisters, Faye White of Adamsville, Tenn., and Betty Cross of Jackson, Tenn.; and his brother, Gene Beard of Jackson, Tenn.

BEARD - Jack Brown Beard Sr., 73, of New Castle, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Middle Street Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 18 Court St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Mary P. Collins

GREENLAND - Mary P. (Gray) Collins, 91, of 364 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Born June 23, 1910, in Wentworth, the daughter of the late Bertha (Dobson) and Edgar Gray, she attended school in Newfields and graduated from Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter in 1928. She also attended Concord Business School in Concord.

She worked for many years as custodian and cook at Greenland Central School, starting the first hot lunch program at the school. She was janitor of the Greenland Library, Parish House and the Greenland Community Church. She cleaned house for many people in the Seacoast area and also took in laundry and ironing. Later she became the manager of the Portsmouth Country Club and also the Cocheco Country Club, retiring in 1973.

She had been a member of the Greenland Community Church since the early '30s. As a member, she served as a deaconess and a member of the board of directors. She was a former Sunday school superintendent and teacher and sang in the choir for years. She also helped with the rewriting of the church history and worked on the church newspaper. She was one of the founders of the Women's Fire Auxiliary, a past president of the Women's Alliance, a past president of the PTA, a former master and secretary of the Great Bay Pomona Grange, and a member of the Greenland Grange. Other organizations she participated in were N.H. Extension and the Golden Age Group of Portsmouth. She was responsible for starting the rummage sales, the fish chowder luncheons and the church fair.

She lived in North Carolina for 10 years and was active in St. Matthew's Church and in three senior citizen groups. Her last endeavors were crocheting afghans for infants and the aged until she lost her eyesight.

She is survived by two sons, James E. Syphers and his wife, Barbara, of Hopwood, Pa., and Joseph A. deRochemont of Concord, Calif.; two daughters, Bertha Barrier and her husband, David, of Morganton, N.C., and Mary (Pinky) MacDonald and her husband, Raymond, of Greenland; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a number of great-great-grandchildren; and one very special niece, Janet Gray of Concord, Calif.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Francis, Harold, James and Rodney Gray.

COLLINS - Mary P. (Gray) Collins, 91, of Greenland, died Feb. 17, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Greenland Congregational Community Church. Friends and relatives are invited. Memorial donations should be made to the Greenland Community Congregational Church, c/o Trudy Beck, P.O. Box 128, Greenland, NH 03840. Family flowers only please. Rita P. James

HOPKINS, Minn. - Rita Palmer James, 83, of the Hopkins Care Center, and formerly of 5508 - 14th Ave. South, Minneapolis, Minn., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at the Care Center.

She was born at the Exeter Hospital on Feb. 23, 1918, the daughter of Charles D. and Bernice (Glidden) Palmer of Hampton, N.H. She was raised in Hampton and graduated from Hampton Academy in 1936. She is a direct descendant of one of the first settlers of Hampton, William Palmer. She attended and graduated from Deaconess Hospital Nurses Training in Boston in 1939.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd James of Minneapolis.

After a brief period of employment as a nurse in Boston, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and in 1940 was assigned to Clark Field Hospital in the Philippines. From there, she served in field hospitals on Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippines until the American surrender there, in which she was wounded and taken prisoner. She spent three years as a prisoner of war in Santa Tomas until the American liberation in 1945. She was awarded the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster for her military service.

She is survived by two daughters, Katherine Mullin of Minneapolis, and Barbara Wagar of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Douglas James of Durham, N.C., and Richard James of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ansell Palmer of Hampton, N.H.

JAMES - Rita Palmer James, 83, of Hopkins, Minn., and formerly of Minneapolis, Minn., died Feb. 14, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Historical Society, Hampton, NH. Arrangements are being made by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. A memorial service at the Congregational Church will take place at a later date to be announced.

VENNER - Harold E. Venner Jr., 73, of Chester, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002. Following cremation, memorial calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in the Chester Congregational Church, Chester. Philip A. Baker

KITTERY, Maine - Philip Arthur Baker, 89, of 8 Harris Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

Born on March 12, 1912, he was a son of Philip A. and Lizzie (George) Baker. He was educated in Hooksett and Manchester, N.H., schools.

He was married to his wife of more than 60 years, Cecile Baker. They moved to Kittery from Hooksett in 1940, where they made their home. Together they enjoyed extensive travel abroad.

He retired from Public Service Company of New Hampshire in 1977 as maintenance supervisor after 28 years of dedicated service at the Schiller Electrical Generating Station in Portsmouth.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, enjoying his life membership in the North American Fishing Club, and gardening. He was also known as "Green Thumb" on his CB radio.

He was a 50-year member of the following: St. John's #1 F.T.A.M. of Portsmouth; Washington Chapter #3 Royal Arch Masons in Portsmouth; and KORA Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Lewiston, Maine.

He was past commander and 50-year member of St. Amand #20 Commandery Knight Templar of Kennebunk, Maine, and Knight of the Red Cross of Constantine, Saco, Maine.

He was a charter member of the William Pitt Tavern, Lodge #1789 of Portsmouth and a charter member of the York County Shrine Club.

He was a member of the KORA Kraftsmen of KORA Temple in Lewiston, Maine, and a life member of the Knight Templar Eye Foundation.

He was a member of the Public Service Co. of New Hampshire Seacoast Craftsmen, a life member of their Seacoast Division 25-year Club and a member of the Company's Employees' Assn.

He is survived by a daughter, Dorothy B. (Baker) Labrie and her husband, Raymond, of East Wakefield, N.H.; three grandchildren: Philip A. Labrie and his wife, Carolyn, of Hampton, N.H., Christine T. (Labrie) Polichronopoulos and her husband, Joel, of South Berwick Maine, and Michele L. (Labrie) Beaton and her husband, Glen, of Windham, N.H.; and six great-grandchildren; all of whom he deeply loved and enjoyed.

BAKER - Philip Arthur Baker, 89, of 8 Harris Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Feb. 18, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H. Friends and family may visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. MaryAnn Cuvellier

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for MaryAnn "Peggy" Cuvellier, 67, of 109 Oriental Gardens, were held Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home. The Rev. Leslie Dorr of Shapleigh, Maine, officiated. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. Dorr conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Wayne Estes, Daniel Russell, Wayne Bailey, Dwayne Robichaud, Ronald Pearson and Ramon Valdez.

Lillian M. Kenney

HAMPTON - Lillian M. Kenney, 81, of 64 Haven Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born in Penacook on Feb. 20, 1920, she was a daughter of the late George and Rena (Roy) LaFlamme.

She was a graduate of Penacook High School and was honored with the title of Miss Penacook in 1937. She received her bachelor's degree from Keene State College and her master's degree from the University of New Hampshire, Durham.

For a short time she taught kindergarten in Penacook and, after moving to Hampton in 1960, she taught elementary education at the Salisbury Memorial School in Salisbury, Mass., from 1961 until her retirement in 1981. As a reading-readiness specialist, she served as a tutor to both children and adults for many years.

A communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, she was also a member of the National Education Association and had been active with the Keene State Alumni Association. She was also an accomplished classical pianist.

She was the wife of the late Lawrence E. Kenney, who died in 1985.

Family members include one son, Danny J. Kenney of Hampton; one daughter, Shannon M. O'Brien of Manchester; two grandchildren, Jonas O'Brien and Travis O'Brien; three great-grandchildren; one brother, John LaFlamme of Westford, Vt.; one sister, Gloria Nickel of Mystic, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

KENNEY - Lillian M. Kenney, 81, of 64 Haven Drive, Hampton, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Eleanor F. Watson

PORTSMOUTH - Eleanor F. "Ma" (Ward) Watson, 90, widow of Ernest C. Watson, of 108 Porpoise Way, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center in Dover. She was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 6, 1911, the daughter of Mark E. and Martha A. (Cox) Ward, and had attended the former Haven School of Portsmouth.

She attended the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and enjoyed playing cards and knitting. Survivors include a daughter, Marion E. Walker and her husband, Stephen, of Mascoutah, Ill.; two sons, Frederick W. Watson and his wife, Mary Ann, of Portsmouth, and Robert E. Watson and his wife, Ann, of Greenland; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Bruce Walker and Debra Watson; and two brothers, Philip Ward and Paul Ward.

WATSON - Eleanor F. "Ma" (Ward) Watson, 90, of 108 Porpoise Way, Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from

2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made to Crotchet Mountain Community Care Inc., 30 Maplewood Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Robert F. Littlefield Jr.

SEABROOK BEACH - The funeral for Robert F. Littlefield Jr., 64, of 2 River St., was held Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. C. Peter Dumont, pastor of St. John's Church, Concord, officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by several friends. Private burial was in the Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook.

Michael E. Moore

PORTSMOUTH - Michael E. Moore, 19, of Ashland Street, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 14, 1982, he was the son of Helen (Bilodeau) Moore and the late Earle L. Moore.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 2002. He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

In addition to his mother of Portsmouth, survivors include his sister, Tanya Tyo of Portsmouth; his maternal grandmother, Laurette Bilodeau of Portsmouth; and three nieces, Ariel Tyo, Jade Tyo and Gabrielle Tyo.

MOORE - Michael E. Moore, 19, of Ashland Street, Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday morning at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from

5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

M. Jacqueline Mitchener

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services were held Wednesday for M. Jacqueline Mitchener, 85, who died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre, after a long illness.

Born in Portsmouth on Feb. 27, 1916, she was a daughter of Charles and Mary Ellen (Carey) Dondero. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the University of New Hampshire. She retired as a field representative for the Social Security Administration.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Mitchener and Brian Mitchener; a sister, Eileen Foley of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Carlotta Dondero Bailey and Geraldine Dondero Sylvia.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Farrell Funeral Home, Portsmouth.

Donald Evans

EXETER - Well-attended funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Donald Evans of 83 Main St., Exeter, from the Brewitt Funeral Home, followed by services at Christ Church, Pine Street, in Exeter. The Rev. John E. Denson Jr. officiated, assisted by the Rev. Caroline V. Hines, assistant. The soloists were Isabel Gray and the Rev. Robert Thompson of Phillips Exeter Academy. Organist was Mary Hamlin Spencer. Words of remembrance were given by his daughter, Leslie, and Maureen Barrows. Included in the large attendance were members of the Exeter Country Club, the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, employees of the Seabrook Hardware Store, and many members of the Exeter High School classes of 1981 and 1984.

On Monday evening, members of the Exeter American Legion Post held a memorial service at the Brewitt Funeral Home. Acting Commander Al Fogarty, Jack Strom and Stan Haywood officiated with prayers and presented his daughter, Leslie, with a Bible.

A military burial followed at the Exeter Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. Denson. The flag was presented to his daughter, Leslie. Bearers were Mr. Evans' four brothers, Sam Evans, Harold Evans, Richard Evans and Mike Evans, Cal Barrows, John Hennessey, William Millar and Jeffery Evans.

Robert W. Barney

BARRINGTON - Robert W. Barney, 62, of 5 Mayflower Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at his home.

Born Oct. 13, 1939, in Waterville, Maine, he was the son of Alphonse and Lillian (Gilbert) Barney. He graduated from Waterville High School and went on to attend Olympic College in Washington. He had resided in Seattle, Wash., until moving to Barrington in 1977.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a calibration technician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he retired on March 2, 2001, after working for 36 years.

While in Washington, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Elizabeth Seton Chapter, Port Orchard, Wash. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Dover and the Rochester Lodge of Elks, and a Cub Master of the Boy Scouts of Barrington.

He enjoyed dancing, camping and family events.

He was the husband of Mary (Libby) Barney of Barrington for 39 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Lori Willis and her husband, Gordon, of Stratham, Barbara Barney of Wakefield, and Robert Barney and his wife, Karrie, of Rochester; three grandsons, Andrew Economos of Stratham, Matthew Willis of Stratham, and Cameron Barney of Rochester; two brothers, Leo Barney of Bristol, Conn., and Roland Barney of Augusta, Maine; one sister, Jacqueline Chandler of Carrollton, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

BARNEY - Robert W. Barney, 62, of 5 Mayflower Drive, Barrington, died Feb. 21, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to call today (Friday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church, 577 Central Ave., Dover, with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to a charity of one's choice.

NEW CASTLE - Funeral services for Mr. Jack Brown Beard Sr., 73, of New Castle were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, Thursday, with services held at the Middle Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, officiated.

Words of reflection were given by Mr. Beard's daughter, Lisa Beard. Organist was Murray McNair and pianist was Winnie Caswell. In attendance were members of the church.

Bearers were Jack Brown Beard Jr., Louis Dow Sr., Louis Dow Jr., Gary Sama, Nick Sama and Tim Sama.

Burial will be in Oceanside Cemetery, New Castle, in the spring.
