Dorothy L. Hunter

HAMPTON - Dorothy L. Hunter, 92, formerly of Mill Road, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Seacoast Health Center.

She was born in Tampa, Fla., Sept. 2, 1909, the daughter of the late Howard and Mabel (Meares) Street.

Mrs. Hunter and her late husband, Douglass E. Hunter Sr., a former New Hampshire state senator who died in 1969, owned and operated hotels and restaurants at Hampton Beach for many years. She later worked as a bookkeeper-secretary for Colt's News Store in Hampton.

Mrs. Hunter was a member of the First Congregational Church and its Women's Guild, the Hampton Historical Society, Hampton Monday Club and the GFWC-NH State Federation.

Survivors include her son, Douglass E. Hunter Jr. and his wife, Sarah, of Hampton; and one brother, Howard Street and his wife, Rene, of Silva, Mo.

HUNTER - Dorothy L. Hunter, 92, formerly of Mill Road, Hampton, died Feb. 21, 2002. Services will be held in the First Congregational Church, Hampton, Sunday at 2 p.m. Friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. Private interment will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to either The First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842; or to the Hampton Historical Society, 40 Park Ave., Hampton, NH 03842. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Manford E. Smith

ELIOT, Maine - Manford E. Smith, 86, of 9 Tidy Road and formerly of 26 Bois Circle, Laconia, N.H., died at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth, N.H., on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002. He was the widower of Pauline L. (Stone) Smith, who died Sept. 24, 1996.

Mr. Smith was born July 2, 1915, in Putnam, Conn., the son of George L. and Vellie Smith. He lived in Massachusetts for many years before moving to Alton Bay and later to Laconia, N.H., in 1993. He was a tool maker at the Cambridge Screw Co. in Cambridge, Mass., for 39 years and retired in 1978.

Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and playing the organ. He was very proud to support the armed services by being a machinist during World War II.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence P. Smith and his wife, Donna, of Eliot; a daughter, Betty E. Smyrski of Rutland, Vt.; a stepson, John Lorway of Princeton, Mass.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, George L. Smith of Auburn; and one niece.

SMITH - Manford E. Smith, 86, of 9 Tidy Road, Eliot, Maine, and formerly of 26 Bois Circle, Laconia, N.H., died on Feb. 21, 2002. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. Spring burial will be at the family lot at the New Riverside Cemetery, Alton, N.H. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Michael E. Moore

PORTSMOUTH - Michael E. Moore, 19, of Ashland Street, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 14, 1982, he was the son of Helen (Bilodeau) Moore and the late Earle L. Moore.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 2002. He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

In addition to his mother of Portsmouth, survivors include his sister, Tanya Tyo of Portsmouth; his maternal grandmother, Laurette Bilodeau of Portsmouth; and three nieces, Ariel Tyo, Jade Tyo and Gabrielle Tyo.

Robert R. Payn

NORTH HAMPTON - Robert R. Payn, 90, of 203 Lafayette Road, died at home on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, after a long struggle with leukemia.

Born in Stowe, Vt., Jan. 25, 1912, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Raymond) Payn of Underhill, Vt.

He moved to Newington, N.H., in 1939. He was employed with Lane Construction Co. for years, building runways at Pease Air Force Base. He worked as a mechanic for Seybolt Motors of Portsmouth for 13 years and then the University of New Hampshire for 14 years. He retired in 1976.

He was predeceased by his only daughter, Anna B. (Payn) Connors.

He was the husband of Marjorie R. (Brooks) Payn for 62 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son-in-law, Thomas P. Connors of North Hampton; two grandsons, Michael P. Connors of North Hampton and Marc S. Connors of Rye; and four great-grandchildren, Riley, Olivia, Sylvia and Anabella.

PAYN - Robert R. Payn, 90, of 203 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, died Feb. 20, 2002. There will be no services. His body will be donated to Dartmouth Medical School. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Anatomical Gift Program, Department of Anatomy, Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, NH 03755-3832; or to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements under the direction of the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Rev. Adna P. Sanborn

SALISBURY, Mass. - The Rev. Adna P. Sanborn, 81, of 9 Locust St. died Wednesday evening, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Bedford VA Hospital. He was the husband of the late Iola V. (Hampton) Sanborn, who died in 1999.

Born in Newburyport on April 28, 1920, he was the son of the late Wallace and Annie M. (Pike) Sanborn. He was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1938, and also graduated from Beverly Trade School.

In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seabees in the Pacific Theater. During the Korean Conflict, he was a reservist with the Navy.

A welder by trade, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Shop 26, retiring in 1971, and was a member of the Boiler Makers Union of Portsmouth, N.H.

He graduated from Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C., in 1956. He served as a minister from 1957 to 1986, first at the Grace Baptist Church, and later at the Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Amesbury. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid mountain climber.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet S. Mark and husband, David E., of Duncanville, Texas, and Rebecca A. Knowles of Salisbury; one son, John D. "Jack" Sanborn of St. Albans, Maine; two sisters, Dorothy I. Evans of Amesbury and Barbara Sanborn of Lawrence; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SANBORN - The Rev. Adna P. Sanborn, 81, of 9 Locust St., Salisbury, Mass., died Feb. 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Grace Reformed Baptist Church, Amesbury, Mass., followed by interment in Mount Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Grace Reformed Baptist Church, 98 Kimball Road, Amesbury, MA 01913. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury.

Fred R. Nelson

HAMPTON - Fred R. Nelson, 93, of 7 Dearborn Ave., Hampton, formerly of Nashua, died at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, Thursday Feb. 21, 2002.

He was born in Woonsocket, R.I. on May 2, 1908, a son of the late Wylie W. and Bessie S. (Kerr) Nelson. He was educated in Woonsocket, R.I. and also attended the former Hill College in Woonsocket for a year.

A resident of Hampton since 1993, he had previously lived in Nashua for 14 years and in Melrose, Mass. for a period of time. He grew up in Woonsocket where he was born.

Mr. Nelson had been employed by Ernst and Ernst Company in Providence, R.I. as an accountant and also in sales promotion. At one time he worked for Ford Motor Company.

He had been active with the churches in the various communities where he resided.

He was predeceased by his wife, Andrea (Plays) Nelson, who died March 30, 1993.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Beverly J. and Loren E. Cammett of Rochester, N.H.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer W. Nelson of Cedartown, Georgia.

Private services will be held. The Davis Funeral Home, One Lock Street, Nashua, is in charge of arrangements.

Paul W. Demers

SEABROOK, N.H. - Paul W. Demers, age 79, of 168 Walton Road, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Monday at the Holmes Regional Medical Center, in Melbourne, Fla.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., he attended Hannah Duston Grammar School and Haverhill High School. Mr. Demers served in the Army during World War II. He worked as a machinist for the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass., for 34 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the former St. Joseph Church and All Saints Church, Haverhill, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lorraine Post 29.

Mr. Demers is survived by a step-daughter, Diane Miller of Haverhill, Mass.; a sister, Marjorie Greer of Haverhill, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

DEMERS - Mr. Paul W. Demers, 79, of 168 Walton Road, Seabrook, N.H., formerly of Haverhill, Mass. died Feb. 18, 2002. Relatives and friends may attend his funeral Mass on Monday at 9 a.m. at All Saints Church, Haverhill, followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements are under the direction of Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA 01832. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph School Tuition Aid Fund, c/o All Saints Rectory, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill, MA 01832.

Warren D. Sawyer Jr.

NEWMARKET - Warren D. Sawyer Jr., 66, of New Road, known to his family and many friends as "Junior," died suddenly Feb. 14, 2002, at Exeter Hospital. He had recently had bypass heart surgery.

Born July 11, 1935, in Exeter, he was the only son of Warren D. Sawyer Sr. and Ruth M. (Watson) Sawyer. He was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

After graduating from Newmarket High in 1953, he worked for H. Roby Jewell transporting livestock between farms throughout New England.

He worked for the town of Newmarket for 20 years in public works and then as an equipment operator for Ernie Currier Construction where he retired in 1998.

He was the fifth generation to live at the Watson Family homestead that overlooked the mouth of the Lamprey River and Great Bay. Junior loved nothing more than working the land of his farm and the waters of the bay.

Fore more than 50 years, he hayed fields, cut firewood, raised fruit, vegetables and livestock. He started raising sheep at the age of 6, and when he died he still owned four ewes descended from his family's original stock.

His favorite autumn ritual was to attend the local county fairs; he especially loved to watch the oxen and horse-pulling events.

Well known for his "kitchen bait & tackle shop," he supplied both local fishermen and other bait shops as far north as Berlin, N.H. He also assisted many smelt fishermen in getting their bob houses to the channel of the Lamprey and getting them off before the ice went out.

Junior was the local almanac of the tides and smelt runs and all the fishermen looked to him for advice.

The Sawyer Farm was a hub of activity. Junior's huge assortment of friends loved to stop by the kitchen or barn for a visit.

He was an honest man who lived simply. All who knew him will surely miss that distinctive voice, his rosy cheeks, friendly smile, and his sparkling blue eyes.

In celebration of his life, friends and family have established a memorial fund in his name to benefit local youth farming, hunting and fishing programs.

Survivors include his dear companion, Brenda Stevens, and nine first cousins: John E. Sawyer of Davenport, Fla.; Thomas H. Sawyer, Joan A. Curtis and Dorothy Jackson, all of San Antonio, Texas; Robert Sawyer of Trenton, N.J.; Carolyn J. Staniec and Lena Thursby, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; Emily J. Campbell of California, and Joan (last name and address unknown).

SAWYER - Warren D. Sawyer Jr., 66, known to his family and many friends as "Junior," died Feb. 14, 2002. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, with Rev. David Wuori officiating. Burial will be this spring in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Jack Brown Beard Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Jack Brown Beard Sr., 73, of New Castle, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Thursday, with services held at Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, officiated. Words of reflections were given by Mr. Beard's daughter, Lisa Beard. Organist was Murray McNair and pianist was Winnie Caswell. In attendance were members of the church.

Burial will be in Oceanside Cemetery, New Castle, in the spring.

Bearers were Jack Brown Beard Jr., Louis Dow Sr., Louis Dow Jr., Gary Sama, Nick Sama and Tim Sama.

Merle L. Mather

OHIO - Merle Louise (Ferguson) Mather, 92, died Feb. 5, 2002.

Ms. Mather was a native of Somerville, Mass., and a graduate of Boston University School of Music, Class of 1935. She was active as pianist and organist in the Portsmouth area during the 1940s, while a resident of Kittery Point.

She was the beloved wife of Richard B., and mother of Diane Mather of Cleveland, and Carolyn Mather of Philadelphia

Eleanor F. Watson

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Eleanor F. "Ma" (Ward) Watson, 90, of 108 Porpoise Way, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Friday.

Rev. William T. Richards, pastor, of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by grandson Col. Michael Walker, USAF.

Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Richards.

Bearers were Robert Watson, Col. Michael Walker, USAF, Stephen Walker, Barbara Walker, Cathy Clark and Donna Lajoie.

Robert D'Alessandro

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Robert (Bob) D'Alessandro, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Health Center of Merritt Island. Born in Fort Lee, N.J., he was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force.

He and his late wife, who preceded him in death Oct. 1, 2001, were residents of 162 Orchard St. in Portsmouth from 1955 to 1990.

He is survived by one son, Nick D'Alessandro of Rockledge, Fla.; two daughters, Michelle Logi of New Hampshire, and Judy Sloan of Washington state; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Atlantic Mortuary, Rockledge, Fla.

Leslie Howard

A memorial service was held for Leslie Howard of Eliot, Maine, on Feb. 22, 2002, at the J. S Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine, with the Rev. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiating. He offered words of remembrance written by Mr. Howard's granddaughter. His daughter, Mrs. Leslie Hanslope, read a poem she had written for her parents a number of years ago. The service continued with a time of sharing following the service. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Lillian M. Kenney

HAMPTON - The funeral for Lillian M. Kenney, 81, of 64 Haven Drive, who died Feb. 19, 2002, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Private interment will be in the High Street Cemetery.

Theodora Croteau

PORTSMOUTH - Theodora Croteau, 85, of 30 Pine St., died at her home on Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 2002, surrounded by her family.

Born in Berlin on Sept. 8, 1916, she was a daughter of Arthur and Marie (Croteau) Croteau and had been a resident of Portsmouth for more than 50 years. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Survivors include her brothers, Roger Croteau, with whom she lived, Philip Croteau of Eliot, Maine, and Paul Croteau of Merrimac, Mass.; her sisters, Germaine Fanjoy and Doris Dube, both of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Philia and Wilfred Croteau.

CROTEAU - Theodora Croteau, 85, of Portsmouth, died at her home on Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Suite 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Helen E. Hight

WORCESTER, Mass. - Helen E. (Fegreus) Hight, 87, of

20 Mary Scano Drive, also of South Dennis, and formerly of Shrewsbury, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester.

She was born in Worcester, daughter of Ludwig and Nellie (Moynihan) Fegreus and lived in Shrewsbury most of her life.

Her husband, Frank L. Hight, died in 1993. She leaves two sons, David P. Hight of Auburn, and Allen C. Hight of Northboro; a daughter, Virginia M. Chidester of Portsmouth, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

A brother and two sisters predeceased her.

She worked in the Shrewsbury school system for many years.

She was a charter member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Shrewsbury, and St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Harwich; a member of the Emblem Club of the Elks; and a member of the Women's Auxiliary U.S. Marine Corps. She was also active in Boy Scouts and loved to travel.

HIGHT - Helen E. (Fegreus) Hight, 87, of Worcester, Mass., died Feb. 23, 2002. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Howard C. Allen Funeral Home, 653 Main St., Shrewsbury, Mass. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, Mass. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.
