Dorothy L. Hunter

HAMPTON - The funeral for Dorothy L. Hunter, 92, formerly of Mill Road, who died Feb. 21, 2002, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Private graveside services were conducted in the High Street Cemetery. A public memorial service was held Sunday afternoon in the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor, officiated at both services. David Morochnick was organist, and John MacInnes served as usher.

TIBBETTS - Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard J. "Dick" Tibbetts, 67, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.

Helen I. Kellenbeck

NORTH HAMPTON - Helen I. (Kasper) Kellenbeck, widow of Lester C. Kellenbeck, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital in Exeter.

She was born in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, a daughter of the late Frederick and Mildred J. (Clark) Kasper, and was a graduate of Old Orchard High School in Old Orchard, Maine.

She was formerly employed at Trafton Insurance Agency, Dunfey Insurance Agency in Hampton, Sears, and Sam's Club in Seabrook.

She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and was a member of Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star, in Portsmouth.

Survivors include her sister, Isabel M. Kasper of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; and her stepdaughter, Leslie McIver and her husband, Neil, of Plymouth.

KELLENBECK - Helen I. (Kasper) Kellenbeck, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, North Hampton, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Order of Eastern Star Services at 1:30 p.m. by Rivermouth Chapter #54. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc., NE Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688, or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

SANBORN - Harry A. Sanborn Jr., 82, of 37 Mt. View Terrace, Rye, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with wake services by the Rev. Agapit H. Jean Jr. at 3:45 p.m. American Legion services will be held at 6:45 p.m. by Frank E. Booma Post #6 at the funeral home. JAMES - Rita (Palmer) James, 83, of Hopkins, Minn., formerly of Hampton, sister of Ansell Palmer of Hampton, died Feb. 14, 2002. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2002, in the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Historical Society, 40 Park Ave., Hampton, NH 03842. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Joan B. Johnson

YORK, Maine - Joan B. Johnson, 69, of 74 Beech Ridge Road died Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Sentry Hill after a long illness.

She was born on July 13, 1932, in Swampscott, Mass., the daughter of William and Clara (Moulton) Kinzett. She was a graduate of Danvers High School in Massachusetts and Fisher Junior College. She was a secretary at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the pipe shop and haz-mat office, retiring in 1995.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and the Fadette Chapter No. 166 Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling, camping, attending yard sales, bottle collecting and caring for animals.

She is survived by her husband Edward R. Johnson of York; three sons, William E. Johnson of York, Dana C. Johnson and his wife Linda of York, and Russell A. Johnson of York; one daughter, Susan E. Derickson and her husband Gary of Machias, Maine; and three grandchildren, Brandy Derickson, Tennille Marquis and Justin Johnson.

JOHNSON - Joan B. Johnson, 69, of York died Tuesday, Feb. 26, in York. Public visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Services by Eastern Star Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter No. 176 are planned for 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A private funeral service will be held.

Robert W. Stone

PORTSMOUTH - Robert William "Woody" Stone, 75, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, husband of Lucette (Vachon) Stone, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

He was born in Manchester on Sept. 6, 1926, the son of the late Arthur and Vivian (Harris) Stone.

Woody was a graduate of Central High School in Manchester. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Army.

Upon returning from the military, he went on to further his education and received his B.S. from St. Anselm College and his master's degree from Northeastern University.

Over the years, Woody was employed as a teacher, administrator and coach in the Manchester and Portsmouth school systems.

Besides his wife, Lucette (Vachon) Stone, survivors include his children, Susan Rysnik and her husband, John, of Wilton, Beth Stone Hancock and her husband, Bill, of Cape Neddick, Maine, Robert Stone II and his wife, Natalie, of Greenland, Kathleen Stone and her husband, Steve Carter, of Portsmouth, and Jennifer Stone of Exeter; his former wife, Rita Stone of Greenland; stepson Steve Vachon of Dover; stepdaughter Monique Vachon of Dover; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Barbara Hubley of Belmont, and Betty D'Arruba of San Diego, Calif.

STONE - Robert William "Woody" Stone, 75, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Isabel H. Colwell

SOMERSWORTH - Isabel H. Colwell, 90, of 207 Green St., died Feb. 24, 2002, at Sunbridge of Rochester.

Born Jan. 22, 1912, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Warren H. and Theda (Taylor) Hobbs.

She lived for many years in the Hampton and Stratham area and summered at Plaice Cove in Hampton. She was a graduate of Hampton Academy and attended the Chandler School in Boston.

A homemaker, she was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Exeter, the Hampton Historical Society, the Hampton Monday Club, and was well known for her hand-hooked rugs.

She moved to Somersworth six years ago from Brunswick, Maine.

Family members include two daughters, Carolyn T. Lydiard of Somersworth, and Judith C. Parker and her husband, John, of Brunswick, Maine; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Annie Elliott and her husband, Robert, of Kennebunkport, Maine.

She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Colwell, in 1982, and a sister, Dorothy H. Cummings.

COLWELL - Isabel H. Colwell, of 207 Green St., Somersworth, died Feb. 24, 2002. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Homemakers of Strafford County for the Day-Out Program, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867. Private burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Phyllis H. Lufkin

PORTSMOUTH - Phyllis H. Lufkin, 87, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in Newfields on Nov. 14, 1914, the daughter of G. Irvin Howard and Eva (Sanborn) Howard. She was a graduate of Traip Academy, Class of 1932. She worked for the late Attorney Oscar Neukom for 17 years until his death in 1959 and was a legal secretary to the law firm of Griffin, Harrington and Brigham for many years prior to her retirement. She was active in the Piscataqua Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club, serving as president from 1960 to 1962. She also served as president of the Women's City Club in Portsmouth.

She was Past Matron of Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star, and a Past Grand Marshall of the Grand Chapter of N.H., O.E.S.

A member of the North Congregational Church of Portsmouth, she served as president of the Fellowship Forum for many years. She was also a member of the Sanborn Family Association.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold E. Lufkin, who died in 1975.

LUFKIN - Phyllis H. Lufkin, 87, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the

J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with O.E.S. service at 9:45 a.m., prior to services by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 of Portsmouth. There will be no visiting hours.

Philip A. Baker

KITTERY, Maine - A well attended funeral was held on Saturday for Philip A. Baker, who died on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

In attendance were family, neighbors and friends as well as a number of his fellow Masons.

The service was conducted at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery by members of St. John's #1 A.F.&A.M. of Portsmouth, N.H. Taking part in the service were Donald L. Stevens, Worshipful Master of St. John's #1; Robert Southerland Jr., Worshipful Master; and Verne Anderson, Senior Warden. Also taking part were A. Kenneth Day, Chaplain; and Past Masters Edgar Anderson, Wesley Rowe, Francis Bridge, William Sawyer and Calvin Wilder as well as Ralph Woodman. Also present were James Rogers, Past Commander of St. Amand Commandery 20; Clyde Staples of Yorkshire Lodge #179 in North Berwick; Stanley Merrill of Strafford Lodge; and John O. Bond, Sr. Right Eminent Department Commander, Northeastern Department, Grand Encampment of Knights of Templar, USA.

Mr. Baker's firstborn great-grandchild, Brie Polichronopoulos, also spoke of many fond memories and read a poem she had written in memory of her grandfather. All were invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Labrie of Hampton for a time of refreshment and sharing after the service.

Burial will take place in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot in the spring. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Lottie E. Bush

PITTSFIELD, Maine - Lottie E. Bush, 91, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital.

She was born Oct. 25, 1910, in Kittery Point, the daughter of William and Fannie (Brooks) Spinney.

She married George W. Bush, who died in 1963.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point. She was a former Girl Scout leader in Kittery Point. Survivors include a daughter, Georginne Lary of Pittsfield; a sister-in-law, Lillian Spinney of Kittery Point; two grandchildren, Carl and his wife, Linda Lary, of Hartland, and Marcia and her husband, Chris Price, of Canaan; three great-grandchildren, Joseph and Mariah of Hartland, and Sierra of Canaan; and her second family and many friends at Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility.

Funeral services will be held at graveside in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, ME 04967.

Harry A. Sanborn Jr.

RYE - Harry A. Sanborn Jr., 82, husband of Ruth R. (Isabelle) Sanborn of 37 Mount View Terrace, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at his home. He was born in Laconia on Dec. 19, 1919, the son of Harry A. Sanborn Sr. and Thirza (Wilkins) Sanborn. He was a graduate of Laconia High School, Class of 1938.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a shipfitter / planner estimator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1972 after 30 years. He was a member of NARFE Chapter 231; Frank E. Booma Post #6, American Legion; Loyal Order of Moose; AARP; Senior Friends; Senior Citizens; Prime Time; and Knights of Columbus.

Besides his wife of 55 years, survivors include a son, Harry A. Sanborn of Newington; two daughters, Nancy L. Young and her husband, Bill, of Sanbornton, and Susan T. Record and her husband, Del, of Rye; four grandchildren, Holly Young of Franklin, Joy Brough and her husband, Kelly, of Gilmanton Iron Works, Kevin Sanborn and his wife, Luanne, of Grandbury, Texas, and DJ Record and his wife, Becky, of Hampton; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Kiernan of Newmarket; a sister-in-law, Irene Chamberlain of Orange County, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard J. Tibbetts Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard J. "Dick" Tibbetts Sr., 67, of 928 South St., died of a sudden illness on Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 2002, at Portsmouth Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends.

Born and raised in the Puddle Dock section of Portsmouth in 1934, son of James G. and Katherine (Jewett) Tibbetts, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1952, and received an associate's degree from Trenton State College. He was a member and former altar boy at St. John's Episcopal Church.

He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia (Trueman), in 1953 and had four children. He served 30 distinguished years in the Air Force, and his list of accomplishments include two tours at Pease. He was also stationed at Johnson Atoll; Spain; Goosebay, Canada; Arkansas; Michigan; New Jersey; Hawaii; and Guam. He rose to the highest enlisted rank, chief master sergeant, in the 3rd Air Division and retired as senior enlisted advisor of the 509th bomb wing. He started as an aircraft mechanic on B-47 bombers and later served as a logistical support superintendent. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and a lifetime member of the DAV Piscataqua Chapter and was former VP on the board of directors of Service Federal Credit Union. His retirement party held at the Pease NCO club was a highlight of his career and for his family.

He retired from the Air Force in 1983 and worked at Seabrook Station for a few years. Later he became a store manager, then a district manager, at several Trendlines/Woodworker's Outlets in New Hampshire until a disabling condition changed his life in September of 1988. His struggle over the past 13 years was a testament to the kind of man he was and an inspiration to all who loved and cared for him, whether he was driving his electric wheelchair to the Pic'n Pay or cheering the spirits of fellow residents, including his "Golden Girls," at the Edgewood Centre nursing home. He was known for his sense of humor and his positive nature, and he always gave of himself to others.

He was a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth and an avid swimmer and scuba diver. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and motorcycling. He was very active and energetic throughout his life and loved to dance with his bride.

He is survived by his children, Nora Popp of Fall River, Mass., Richard Tibbetts Jr. and wife, Donna, of Kailua, Hawaii, Carol Medolo and husband, Joe, of Portsmouth, and Paul Tibbetts and wife, Ann, of Portsmouth; granddaughters C. Nicole Popp, Corrine Popp and Katherine Tibbetts; cousins Doris Finnigan, Joan Alessi, Frank Jewett, Sonny Price, Sylvia Eaton, Judy Jumper and Betty Fecteau; nieces and nephews Jo-Ann Clark, Scott Trueman, Kim Smith, Lisa Trueman, Glen Trueman, Theresa Trueman, Linda Cruickshank and Lori Brown; and numerous grandnieces and -nephews and lifelong friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Mae. All who were touched by his presence will miss him dearly.

NORTH HAMPTON - Funeral services for Helen I. (Kasper) Kellenbeck, of 5 Lafayette Terrace, were held on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. Ann W. Stevenson, associate rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Order of Eastern Star services were held at the funeral home Wednesday by Rivermouth Chapter #54 including Worthy Matron Martha E. Petruzzi, PM; Worthy Patron George N. Flanders, PP; Chaplain A. Kenneth Day, PP; Adah, Anne M. Goodwin; Ruth, Elizabeth E. Eckhart; Esther, Barbara S. Pierce, PM; Martha, Margaret R. Gray; Electa, Edith L. Lovering, PM; Mary Ann Flanders, PM; Alice Denault, PM; and Mary E. Pereira, Assoc. Conductress.

In attendance were representatives from the Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of Eastern Star.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Stevenson.

Barbara Navelski

NORTH HAMPTON - Barbara Navelski, 76, of 164 Atlantic Ave., died Feb. 26, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Salem, Mass., on March 30, 1925, she was the daughter of Stephen and Lillian (Ostrowski) Pasternak and had been a longtime resident of the area, having lived in both Newington and North Hampton. She had a great love for antique collecting and was also a past president of the North Hampton Women's Club.

Survivors include her husband, Alphonse Navelski, whom she was married to for 54 years; three sons, Michael and his wife, Carla Navelski, of Brentwood, Stephen Navelski of Orange, Calif., and Paul and his wife, Nancy Navelski, of Rochester; and one grandchild, Matthew Navelski of Orange, Calif.

NAVELSKI - Barbara Navelski, 76, of 164 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died Feb. 26, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth. Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 845 Woodbury. Ave., Portsmouth.

Helen G. Whitmore

PORTLAND, Maine - Helen G. Stanhope Whitmore, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 11, 1923, in Manchester, N.H., to Mary Gordon and Anthony Dewitt Stanhope. She attended South Portland schools, graduating from South Portland High School in 1940.

An avid reader, she was often seen in the Portland Public Library. She also loved crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed walking in her neighborhood and at the Maine Mall. She worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine, retiring in 1982.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church.

On April 24, 1948, she married Herbert J. Whitmore at St. Dominic's Church. Her greatest love was her family. Throughout her life she gathered her family every Saturday night for supper, a tradition that continued through her recent illness. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amy L. Whitmore of Hampton, N.H.

Survivors include her husband of Portland; six children, Paul J. Whitmore of Hampton, N.H., Elaine P. Edwards, Janice H. Murphy, Gary A. Whitmore and Robert G. Whitmore, all of Portland, and Donna M. Towle of Gorham; 11 grandchildren, Robert B., Jonathan C. and Nichole M. Whitmore, of Marianna Fla., Kristen E. Whitmore of New York, N.Y., Gregory P. Whitmore of Hampton, N.H., Cara A. Murphy of Durham, N.H., Ashley R. and Justin E. Towle of Gorham, Jennifer L. Murphy, Sarah R. Whitmore and Daniel R. Whitmore, of Portland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

WHITMORE - Helen G. Whitmore, 79, of Portland, Maine, died Feb. 27, 2002. Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, Maine, where prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church. Donations may be made in her memory to the Portland Public Library Book Fund, 5 Monument Square, Portland, ME 04101.
