George J. Bidlen

KITTERY, Maine - George J. Bidlen, 79, of 10 Stevenson Road, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in Lisbon Falls on Aug. 14, 1922, he was the son of George and Mary (Menos) Bidlen.

Mr. Bidlen served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and saw combat on Tulugi, Guadalcanal, New Britain Island and the Paulu Islands. He received the Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct, Asiatic, Pacific and Sharpshooter medals. He also received a Presidential Citation and five Battle Stars.

He retired as a supervisor from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1973 with 29 years of service to his country. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AARP and NARFE.

He was the husband of the late Julia (Stulb) Bidlen, who died in 1999.

Survivors include two nieces, Patricia Evanisko of Lisbon Falls, and Joan Bozeman of Douglas, Ga.; three grandnephews; and a grandniece.

He was predeceased by a niece, Nancy Russell.

BIDLEN - George J. Bidlen, 79, of Kittery, Maine, died March 4, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Portsmouth, Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Winifred Bakula

YORK, Maine - Winifred Bakula, 76, of Indian Trail, York, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1926, in Malverne, N.Y., a daughter of Gustaf and Esther (Nelson) Nissen. Mrs. Bakula was a graduate of Concord High School in Concord, Mass. She attended college at The Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts and at The Vesper George Art School, both in Boston.

Mrs. Bakula worked for the former Boston Post. She and her husband Henry, a well-known local artist, owned and operated Bakula Studios for more than 35 years. She was an award-winning artist who enjoyed participating in many shows, especially those sponsored by two local groups, the York Art Association and the Kittery Art Association, in which she was an active member of both. She was also a member of the York Chamber of Commerce.

She was the wife of the late Henry Bakula, who died in June 2000.

Survivors include her daughter, Linnea Romeo and her husband William of Waltham, Mass.; a son, Steven Bakula and his wife Janice of Eliot; three sisters, Helene Santora of Concord, Mass., Esther Dimeo of Clearwater, Fla., and Betty Craig of Dorchester, Mass.; two grandchildren, Brianna and Jenny Guilford; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bakula is also survived by her close friend, Evelyn Wold of York.

BAKULA - Winifred Bakula, 76, of Indian Trail, York, Maine, died March 5, 2002. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 129 Miller Ave., Portsmouth, on Saturday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The York Art Association, P.O. Frederick H. Heuss

ROCHESTER - Frederick H. Heuss, 77, of 6 Vernon Ave., died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 1, 1924, in Waltham, Mass., the son of the late William August and Edna (Haynes) Heuss.

He graduated from Sandwich High School in 1942 and entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served for two years in the South Pacific during World War II and 18 months during the Korean War. He worked at General Electric as a tool and die maker, retiring after 30 years of service.

A charter member of the Trinity Anglican Church of Rochester, he served on the vestry and was a lay leader. He was a member of the Demolay and the Demolay of Honor. He joined the Dewitt Clinton Lodge in Sandwich, Mass., in 1946, then transferred to Humane Lodge #21 F.&A.M. in 1953. He was Master of the lodge from 1964 to 1965 and Grandmaster from 1982 to 1984. He was a member and head of the Yorke Rite Bodies and grand commander of the Grand Commandry of New Hampshire from 1996 to 1997. He was Intendent General of the Red Cross of Constantine. He was also past patron of the James Farrington Order of Eastern Star Chapter #7.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. (Fellows) Heuss of Rochester; a son, David F. and his wife Kathleen Heuss of Hooksett; a daughter, Diana R. Heuss of Pittsfield; three granddaughters, Abigail, Rebecca and Molly; a sister, Virginia Ann Cowley of E. Falmouth, Mass.; and nieces and cousins.

HEUSS - Frederick H. Heuss, 77, of Rochester, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002. Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity Anglican Church, Route 108, Rochester. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Anglican Church, P.O. Box 1078, Rochester, NH 03866.

Philip J. Rioux

PORTSMOUTH - Philip Joseph Rioux, 96, formerly of 86 Islington St., died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2002, at Langdon Place in Dover after a period of failing health. Born Jan. 27, 1906, in St. Francoise, Quebec, Canada, he was a son of Philias J. and Marie (April) Rioux.

After spending his childhood in Nashua, he settled in Portsmouth, where he became well known for his photography business, Philip's Portrait Studio. Many of his portraits still hang in area homes today.

He was a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 444 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 of Portsmouth. In addition, he was a member of the American Photographer's Association of America.

He also owned and operated The Bachelors Quarters on Islington Street for more than 50 years and in the '50s and '60s owned and operated the Ogunquit Playhouse Inn in Ogunquit, Maine. He will be sadly missed by the many tenants he has served over the years.

His greatest love was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Every Wednesday was referred to as "Papa Day," when he would come and take the children and their friends out to dinner. Fond memories will be cherished. Family members include his daughter, Linda M. Rioux of Rochester; three grandchildren, Melynda Breton and her husband, Roland, of Rochester, Marla Freeman and her husband, Dennis, of Farmington, and Philip Rioux Mackey of Dover; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Breton, Breanna Breton and Timothy Breton.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francois "Frank" Rioux; and two sisters, Marie Rose Rioux and Adelina "Della" Demaris. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

RIOUX - Philip Joseph Rioux, 96, of Portsmouth, died Monday, March 4, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Pine Hill Cemetery, Section 17 A, Dover, using the Watson Street entrance, with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor of St. Charles Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Katherine M. Janvrin

HAMPTON - Katherine M. Janvrin, 96, of 340 Lafayette Road, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at her residence.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., on Oct. 12, 1905, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Christina (Beaton) Fields.

She attended Newburyport schools and was a graduate of Burdett College, Lynn, Mass., with the Class of 1921.

With her husband, F. Alfred Janvrin, who died in 1981, she owned and operated the former John A. Janvrin Lumber company of Hampton until the yard was sold in 1954. They also were the co-founders, with the late Carl Lougee, of Yankee Trader Real Estate of Hampton, which they operated until 1974, when the business was sold.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by a daughter, E. Ann Grenier; a son, John A. Janvrin; a sister, Christina McGlew; and a brother, Benjamin B. Fields.

Survivors include one daughter, Eileen Monroe of Hampton; nine grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 19 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

JANVRIN - Katherine M. Janvrin, 96, of Hampton, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Ruth McCormack

MERRIMACK - Ruth (Barry) McCormack, 79, of Coventry Court, died unexpectedly in her home on Tuesday, March 5, 2002.

She was born in Lowell, Mass., on Sept. 20, 1922, a daughter of the late William A. and Mary V. (Allen) Barry. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy, Tyngsboro, Mass., and Lowell Commercial College. She also attended Lowell State Teachers College, now known as the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

Mrs. McCormack was employed by the Nashua School Department as a federal bookkeeper for more than 17 years, retiring in 1992. Most recently, she worked as a volunteer at the American Red Cross and was proud of her work there on Sept. 11, 2001.

She loved to spend time with her family and all her friends at Squam Lake, and had recently returned from a family trip to the Caribbean at Christmas. She often visited friends on Cape Cod and was planning a trip to Disney World in April.

Her love of animals brought her to the ASPCA on many occasions, where she always found the perfect dog to love. She was well-known to Seacoast residents who frequented The Ham Store, where she worked alongside her son-in-law Ken, as often as she could.

Her favorite pastimes were playing tennis and riding her bike, but her real passion was her grandchildren. Working with the Common Man Tent at the Sandwich Fair brought her great pleasure. Everybody was her friend.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Judith and Roland Proulx of Cheshire, Conn., Lynda and Kenneth Bettcher of Portsmouth, Janet and Jack Sturms of Morgantown, W.Va., and John J. and Deborah McCormack III of Plymouth, N.H.; a brother, Gerald Barry of Lowell, Mass.; a sister, Marie Bresnahan of Lexington, Va.; eight grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

McCORMACK - Ruth (Barry) McCormack, 79, of Coventry Court, Merrimack, died March 5, 2002. A service will be held for friends and family at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Mahoney Funeral Home, 187 Nesmith St., (Route 38) Lowell, Mass. Following the service, friends are invited to a Celebration of Life luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Common Man Restaurant, Exit 31, off I-93, Concord, where the family will welcome guests. Joseph C. Lutz

EXETER - Joseph C. Lutz, 62, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Jersey City, N.J., on June 30, 1939, a son of Harriet (Gryczan) Lutz of Spotswood, N.J., and the late Joseph Lutz.

He grew up in Jersey City and graduated from St. Mary's High School. He received his bachelor of science in accounting from St. Peter's College in Jersey City and did postgraduate studies in management at Pace University and Fordham University in New York City.

Throughout his career he worked as a financial consultant for numerous companies in New York, Maryland and Massachusetts. Prior to his illness, he was employed as a controller for Thermopol Inc. in Somersworth.

He had resided here for the past 22 years and was a communicant of St. Michael's Church.

He was the husband of Marie (Raffo) Lutz for 37 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include a son, Joseph Lutz of Rockville, Md.; two daughters, Erika Maniotis of Exeter, and Daniella Lutz of Brighton, Mass.; two granddaughters, Alexandra Maniotis and Lindsey Lutz; one brother, Richard Lutz of Yardley, Pa.; a sister, Kathleen McCarthy of Basking Ridge, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

LUTZ - Joseph C. Lutz, of Exeter, died Thursday, March 7, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. After cremation, burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Warren R. Wise

BRENTWOOD - Warren R. Wise, 47, died suddenly March 6, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass.

He was born Feb. 5, 1955, in Richmond, Va., a son of Ronald and Barbara (Richards) Wise of California.

He was a graduate of San Diego State University in California.

He flew CH53 helicopters in the U.S. Marine Corps. He went on to become a pilot for US Airways for 15 years.

He enjoyed swimming, volleyball and softball.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, of Brentwood; his mother, Barbara; his father, Ronald; and his brother, Ward, all of California.

WISE - Warren R. Wise, of Brentwood, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the First Unitarian Church, 12 Elm St., Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. Burial will be private. Viola C. Bellefontaine

PORTSMOUTH - Viola Catherine Bellefontaine, 92, formerly of 36 Manor Drive, died peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2002, at the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Portsmouth, after a period of failing health.

Born Nov. 21, 1909, in Conception Harbor, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of Patrick and Margaret (Kenny) Mansfield, the youngest of 12 children.

After spending her childhood in Newfoundland, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she met and married Arthur T. Bellefontaine of Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1936.

She moved to Saranac Lake, N.Y. in 1942 to be with her husband who was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. She became a practical nurse to assist in his care and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1946. She and her husband moved to Port Fwen, N.Y. where she continued to work as a practical nurse until his death. She moved to Portsmouth in 1979 to be near her daughter and her family.

She was a happy person who readily made friends wherever she went. She was an avid baseball fan, but also enjoyed all sports including boxing, football and especially going to horse races in New York and New England. She particularly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Marie E. Wilson and her husband Frank of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Scott A. Wilson of Hudson, Glenn S. Wilson of Dover, Frank S. Wilson of Merrimack and Valerie J. Wilson of Northfield, all of N.H.; and eight great-grandchildren, Ian Wilson, Molly Wilson, Kyle Wilson, Eric Wilson, Megan Wilson, Emma Wilson, Laura Wilson and Frank Wilson. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

BELLEFONTAINE - Catherine Bellefontaine, 92, formerly of 36 Manor Drive, Portsmouth, died March 7, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Portsmouth, at noon on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Suite 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Richard Frizzell

DOVER - Funeral services for Richard "Dick" Frizzell, 76, of the Riverside Rest Home, Dover, were held Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. Fr. Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, of St. James Church in Portsmouth officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Rev. David Hutton. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Fr. Aggie.

The American Flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Frizzell's stepdaughter, Marsha Price. Bearers were Wayne Price Sr., Wayne Price Jr., Billy Claburn, Kyle Price, Edmund Price, and Nathan Hanscom. VFW services were held at the funeral home Thursday evening by Emerson Hovey Post #168, including Commander Carl B. Walton Sr.; Quarter Master Paul F. Cushing; and Jr. Vice Commander Lee Jackson. American Legion services were also held Thursday evening by Frank E. Booma Post #6 including Commander Donald W. Poisson; Post Chaplain, Carl B. Walton Sr.; Color Guard, Bernie Lowe; Adjutant/Color Guard, Richard Brooks; and Paul F. Cushing.

Catherine E. Courtovich

PORTSMOUTH - Catherine E. Courtovich, 97, died March 8, 2002, in Portsmouth. She was formerly of Medford, Mass.

Mrs. Courtovich was predeceased by her husband George Courtovich.

She was the devoted mother of Dr. Claire VanUmmersen of Washington, D.C., and George Courtovich of Greenland, N.H. Three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

COURTOVICH - Catherine E. Courtovich, 97, of Portsmouth, died March 8, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, from St. Michael's Church on Front and Lincoln Streets in Exeter. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Mass., at a later date. Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to The Edgewood Nursing Home Recreation Fund, 928 South Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Mario L. Zocchi

NEWMARKET - Mario L. Zocchi, 81, formerly of Maplecrest, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare.

Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Newmarket, he was the son of Luigi and Purissima (DeTomasi) Zocchi. He was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.

He was a 1939 graduate of Newmarket High School.

He was a supervisor at the Macallan Co. in Newmarket, where he was employed for many years.

He was a former member of the Newmarket School Board, Planning Board, Budget Committee, Water Commission and the Newmarket Housing Authority. The Annual Report for the town of Newmarket was dedicated to him in 1988.

He was a former communicant of St. Mary's Church, Newmarket, and was a life member of the Polish Club in Newmarket.

He was one of the founders of the Newmarket Little League Program. An avid sports and camping enthusiast, he also enjoyed golfing and was a former member of the Rockingham Country Club. He was a loving father and grandfather.

He was the husband of Blenda (Bell) Zocchi of Newmarket for 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Paul Zocchi and his wife, Cathy, of Lee; a daughter, Marsha Edwards and her husband, Albert, of Exeter; four grandsons; two sisters, Dorothy Zocchi of Newmarket, and Anita Eldridge of Rye; a brother-in-law, John Bell and his wife, Thelma, of Exeter; and four nephews.

ZOCCHI - Mario L. Zocchi, 81, formerly of Maplecrest, Newmarket, died March 8, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday from St. Michael's Church, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Norman F. Royal

HAMPTON BEACH - Norman F. Royal, 83, of 96 Ashworth Ave., a well-known real estate developer and hotelier, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born in Lynn, Mass., April 2, 1918, a son of the late George F. and Ella (Lamott) Royal.

He was a graduate of Hampton Academy and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to being active in the real estate and hospitality business, he also worked as an electrician in Shop 51 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 36 years, retiring in 1976.

He served as Hampton Beach precinct commissioner and was a former member of the Hampton Kiwanis Club.

He was the husband of the late Dorna L. (Locke) Royal, who died in 1994. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Renee Pasket; and by a sister, Virginia Dunbrack Mace.

Family members include four sons, Dennis N. Royal of Londonderry, Kenneth R. Royal and Larry A. Royal, both of Hampton, and Eric B. Royal of Hampton Falls; one daughter, Sherry M. Travia of Derry; one brother, George Royal of Hampton; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

ROYAL - Norman F. Royal, 83, of 96 Ashworth Ave., Hampton Beach, died March 9, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from
