Edward C. Twombly

EXETER - Edward C. Twombly, 65, a resident of

5 Sherwood Forest, died Saturday at his home.

He was the husband of Roberta (Belair) Twombly.

Born in Newburyport, Mass., on Feb. 13, 1937, son of Doris A. (Dame) Pratt of Merrimac, Mass., and the late Earl Twombly, he had lived in Exeter for the past three years, having previously resided in Amesbury, Mass., and Newburyport, Mass.

A graduate of Newburyport High School in the Class of 1955, of which he was the vice president, he had remained active with his class until his illness.

He worked at Western Electric in North Andover, Mass., for more than three decades. Then, in 1977, he owned and operated the New England Bullpen, a popular baseball card shop in Newburyport.

A longtime resident of Amesbury, he was very active in community affairs, having coached minor league and Little League baseball for several years, and also having served on the Finance Committee for the town of Amesbury for one term in the 1980s.

He was an avid mountain climber, who scaled most of the 4000-foot peaks in New England.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Besides his wife and mother, he is also survived by two daughters, Cathryn MacDonald and her husband, Ralph, of Exeter, and Carolyn Twombly of Portsmouth; a son, Eric Twombly and his wife, Jennifer, of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, David Twombly of Pensacola, Fla.; three grandchildren, Bryan, Matthew and Melanie MacDonald, all of Exeter; and a father-in-law, Louis Belair of Byfield, Mass.

Services were private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport, Mass.

William J. Hathaway

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for William James "Bill" Hathaway, 81, of 45 Suzanne Drive, Portsmouth, were held on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor of St. James Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Vocalist was Heather Weller. In attendance were representatives from Seacoast Memorial VFW Post #8942 of Rye. An honor guard was formed at Central Cemetery in Rye by a detachment from the United States Army 10th Mountain Division (LI), Casualty Area Command, Fort Drum, New York, including Staff Sgt. Jacques Carrier, Spc. Jose Garcia Jr., and Pvt. Jacob E. Dionne. Committal services were performed by Father Aggie.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded by the honor guard by Staff Sgt. Jacques Carrier, Spc. Jose Garcia Jr. and Pvt. Jacob E. Dionne and presented to Mr. Hathaway's daughter, Joni L. Workman. Bearers were William A. Hathaway, Don W. Hathaway, James E. Hathaway, James E. Hathaway, Jake R. Hathaway, and Andrew W.G. Reed. VFW services were held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening by Seacoast Memorial Post #8942 of Rye, including Commander Junious B. Owens and Reginald Wright. Assisting in the services were Sr. Commander Carl Walton Sr. of VFW Post #168 and Commander Paul Cushing of VFW District #7.

Anna M. Shea

PORTSMOUTH - Anna M. Shea, 94, of 188 Jones Ave., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.

Born Aug. 23, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Anna (Donnelly) Wormer.

She was raised in Philadelphia and attended Temple University.

A homemaker, she lived for many years in New Jersey, moving to Exeter in 1995 and to Portsmouth in 1999. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, a former member of the Sparta, N.J., Women's Club, and the Motors Girls Club in Union, N.J.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for the Sparta Hospital and won awards for her needlework.

She was the wife of the late Frank J. Shea, who died in 2001.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene J. Shea of Rye, Owen T. Shea of North Easton, Mass., and Frank J. Shea Jr. of Franklin, Mass.; one daughter, Mary Ann Hill of Hampton Falls; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her son, Dennis P. Shea, who died in 1997.

SHEA - Anna M. Shea, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died March 12, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter, on Friday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the New Hampshire Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 623, Manchester, NH 03105. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Trucia G. Orestis

PORTSMOUTH - Trucia Goodwillie Orestis, RN, 28, died Monday, March 11, 2002, at her home.

Born in Portland, Maine, on April 27, 1973, she was a daughter of Kristin and David Goodwillie.

She grew up as an "Army brat," enjoying life on Army posts throughout the world. Having lived for many years in Europe and Central America, she developed a love of travel, which led her to, among other places, China and Bali. Her "next adventure" was always a topic of fun and excitement.

At Stuttgart (Germany) American High School, she was a member of the championship girl's varsity cross-country team. She was an avid and accomplished scuba diver and, to celebrate her 16th birthday, she made her first parachute jump.

She attended the University of New Hampshire and later transferred to Florida State University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1995. She received an associate's degree in nursing from New Hampshire Technical College in 1997 and subsequently practiced as a registered nurse at Webster at Rye, in Rye; Portsmouth Regional Hospital; and the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. She was particularly devoted to her co-workers and patients at Edgewood, who became a part of her extended family. She loved Nantucket Island, crafts, her pets and a good book. Recently, she became captivated by the beauty of Hawaii and had hoped to return there someday.

She is survived by her husband, Nikolaos Orestis, of Rye; her sister, Susan P. Goodwillie; and her mother and father.

ORESTIS - Trucia Goodwillie Orestis, RN, 28, of Portsmouth, died March 11, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Her foremost professional and personal concern was for the care and comfort of her patients; thus, in lieu of flowers, donations made in her name to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH, would be greatly appreciated.

Norman F. Royal

HAMPTON - The funeral for Norman F. Royal, 83, of 96 Ashworth Ave., was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of Hampton's United Methodist Church, officiated. Nelson K. Ward was organist. Burial was in the High Street Cemetery, with committal services by the Rev. Moore. The United States flag that covered the casket was folded by a Navy honor guard and presented to his son, Dennis N. Royal. Pallbearers were Dennis Royal, Eric Royal, George Royal, Dennis Rinauldi, Craig Gardiner and Hans Carbonneau.

Irene Villeneuve

PORTSMOUTH - Irene Villeneuve, 68, of 18 Mariette Drive, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her home.

Born in Berlin on June 3, 1933, she was the daughter of Frank and Eugenie (Pellitier) Bisson and was a graduate of Notre Dame High School with the Class of 1950.

She had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 42 years and was retired as a title clerk from Northeast Federal Credit Union. She was a member of St. James Church and the Emblem Club of the Elks Lodge #97.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Paul Villeneuve; one son, Randy Villeneuve of Galveston, Texas; and a daughter, Lynne Gallagher of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandsons, Dylan, Conor, and Quinn Gallagher of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one brother, Rene Bisson of Palm Beach, Fla.

She was predeceased by a brother, Larry Bisson.

VILLENEUVE - Irene Villeneuve, 68, of 18 Mariette Drive, Portsmouth, died March 13, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Suite 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

GUERETTE - Norman G. Guerette, 65, of 78 Bowers St., Nashua, died Monday, March 11, 2002, in Nashua. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday in Infant Jesus Church. All are invited to attend and may meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home, 370 Main St., Nashua. Viewing hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery, Hudson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in loving memory to Friendship Club for the Handicapped Inc., Zero Orchard Heights, Nashua, NH 03060. The Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home in Nashua is in charge of arrangements.

Beverley C. Fredrickson

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Beverley C. Fredrickson, 79, formerly of Springtree Lane, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover, N.H.

Born in Methuen, Mass., on April 2, 1922, she was the daughter of Odilion and Lucia S. (Nolet) Landry.

She was a 50-year resident of Derry, N.H., until seven years ago when she moved to South Berwick. She was retired from Disogrin Industries of Manchester, N.H.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and a member of the South Berwick Senior Center.

It was her joy to attend her grandchildren's sporting events at Marshwood Junior and Senior High School.

Family members include one daughter, Sherry Allan Bucar and her husband, Ivan Bucar, of South Berwick; one brother, Kenneth Landry and his wife, Celine Landry, of Bedford, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Rita Rogers of Salem, N.H.; four grandchildren, Casey Allan and Jason Allan, both of South Berwick, Scott Allan of Berwick, and Chris Allan of Strafford, N.H.; and four great-grandchildren, Miranda Allan, Charlie Allan, Ian Allan and Ben Allan.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter H. Fredrickson, who died Dec. 29, 1999, and by a son, Wayne Fredrickson, who died in 1963.

FREDRICKSON - Beverley C. Fredrickson, 79, formerly of South Berwick, Maine, died Thursday, March 14, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. Michael's Church, with the Rev. H.J. Cameron, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Frank G. Wolfsen

NORTH HAMPTON - Frank G. Wolfsen, 86, of 108 Exeter Road, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

Raised in Newburyport, Mass., he was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Livermore Falls, Mass., the son of the late Ludwig F. and Isabelle (Smith) Wolfsen. He was a 1933 graduate of Newburyport High School and a 1935 graduate of Essex Agricultural School. He had resided in North Hampton since 1941.

He worked for 17 years as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1960. Previously he had worked at the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. He also worked as a dairy farmer supplying milk to the H.P. Hood Dairy.

He served North Hampton for five terms as a state representative during the 1970s and was a former clerk and acting chairman of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Hampton River Boat Club.

He was a member of Star in the East Lodge #59 F. & A.M. of Exeter, Scottish Rite Bodies; Valley of Portsmouth and Dover, the New Hampshire Consistory; Valley of Nashua, York Rite Bodies, St. Alban Chapter #15 and Olivet Council #11 of Exeter, a Knight Templar of Dewitt Clinton Commandry of Portsmouth, and of Bektash Temple Shrine in Concord. He was a member of the C Patrol, past president of the Portsmouth Shrine Club, and a former affiliate of St. James Lodge #102 F. & A.M. of Hampton.

Family members include his wife of 63 years, Bertha (Anderson) Wolfsen of North Hampton; a son, Glenroy B. Wolfsen of Highbridge, N.J.; a daughter, Susan Cronin of North Hampton; four grandchildren, Lisa Wolfsen, Laura Wolfsen, Michael Wolfsen, and Kim Cronin; a great-granddaughter, Rowan Mary Perkins; a sister, Clara Thomas of DeBary, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Thelma, in 1974 and a granddaughter, Julie Wolfsen, in 1991.

WOLFSEN - Frank G. Wolfsen of 108 Exeter Road, North Hampton, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Church of Christ in North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Masonic services will be at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Irene A. Stivers

AMESBURY, Mass. - Irene A. Stivers, 72, a resident of Amesbury Landing, formerly of Newburyport, and Greenland N.H., died Wednesday at her home.

She was the wife of the late William L. Stivers, formerly of Greenland, who died in 1993.

Born Sept. 7, 1929, in Revere and raised in Medford, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Gertrude (Bangs) Harvey.

A graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a Master of Education degree, with a major in counseling, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Adler & Watson Law Offices and Bradshaw & Associates Law Offices, both of Newburyport, and the Seacoast Visiting Nurses. She was always concerned about helping others and was involved in countless volunteer projects, including as a member of Greenland Community Congregational Church of Greenland, N.H.; a former member of Piscataqua Gundalow Project of Portsmouth, N.H.; a former aftercare coordinator at New Generation, a shelter for homeless pregnant women, in Greenland N.H.; and a volunteer at Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport.

She is survived by a son, Glenn Stivers and his wife, Diane, of Lynnfield; a daughter, Leigh Stivers of Ithaca, N.Y.; a brother, James Harvey of Seabrook, N.H.; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Sara, and Emily Stivers, all of Lynnfield.

She donated her body to Tufts Medical School.

STIVERS - Irene A. Stivers, 72, of Amesbury, Mass., died March 13, 2002, at her home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Generation, P.O. Box 676, Greenland, NH 03840-2225. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday March 17, 2002, at Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road, Greenland, N.H., followed by a gathering with refreshments at the Parish House at 42 Post Road, Greenland, N.H. Arrangements are by Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High Street, Newburyport, Mass.

Evabelle Raitt

NASHUA - Evabelle (Sykes) Raitt, 59, of 165 Cypress Lane, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, March 12, 2002.

Born in Holland, Vt., on Dec. 22, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Roger and Eula (Flynn) Sykes. A resident of Nashua since 1974, she had previously lived in Holland, Newport and Derby, Vt.

She was the wife of John C. Raitt, whom she married on Sept. 21, 1973. Since 1974, Mrs. Raitt, along with her husband, owned and operated Quality Design Nor'Easter Pools, Inc. She also worked as administrative assistant for Ethan Allen Furniture and with Time Warner for a time.

She loved to read, garden and solve crossword puzzles. She especially loved being with her grandchildren. She was educated in Newport, Vt., where she graduated from high school. Following graduation, she attended the University of Vermont at Burlington.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Delwin Sykes, Allen Sykes and Earl Sykes, and two sisters, Mabel Judd and Beaulah Ellam.

Besides her husband of almost 19 years, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger Wells Brown and his wife Cheryl of Stratham, and Johnny Floyd Raitt of Nashua; two daughters, Patti Ann Raitt and Frankie Lynn Raitt, both of Nashua; four grandchildren, Zachary Brown and Colby Brown, both of Stratham, Amee Patenaude of Nashua, and Matthew Raitt of Nashua; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Raitt of Nashua; four brothers, Raymond Sykes of Morgan, Vt., Russell Sykes of Derby, Vt., Harley Sykes of Holland, Vt., and Brian Sykes of Derby, Vt.; three sisters, Lois Carpenter of Derby, Vt., Janice Santacruz and Hazel Pelillo, both of Concord; and several nieces and nephews.

The Davis Funeral Home, One Lock St., Nashua, is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert A. Melendy

BERWICK, Maine - Robert Andrew Melendy, 78, of Merriam St., died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 19, 1923, in Reading, Mass., he was the son of the late William and Flora (Bowser) Melendy.

Mr. Melendy has lived in Berwick for the past 24 years after moving from Reading, Mass.

He was employed in the Air Force for 28 years having served during World War II and Korea.

He was then employed by the Green Mountain Security, Old Colony Security, and by Strafford County Corrections Dept. He was a member of the Retired Air Force Association.

He enjoyed hiking, crosswords, sports, game shows, word find, and volunteering at the Somersworth Food Pantry serving coffee at the Table of Plenty and the spaghetti dinner at the UCC.

He was a member of The United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.

He enjoyed his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of 24 years, Gracie (Philbrook) Melendy of Berwick, he is survived by his step-children, Maj. Vernon Scribner of Beale Air Force Base in California., Capt. Orris H. Scribner of Eliot, step-daughters, Jenny Lou Irvin of Strafford, N.H., Joyce Blanchette of Rochester, N.H., Rebecca Scribner of Somersworth, N.H.; adopted son, David Melendy of Concord, N.H.; his grandchildren, Karina, Kristin, Reah, Vernon Jr. and Jenna Scribner, Sonya, Samantha, Sarah, Jonathan and Jason Irving, Ryan and Melissa Blanchette, Jenifer and Joshua Melendy, Niketa and Tyler Brenner.

MELENDY - Robert Andrew Melendy, 78, of 33 Merriam St., Berwick, Maine, died March 15, 2002. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, West High St., Somersworth, N.H., with Rev. Mark Rideout officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Maine St., Rochester, NH 03867.

Jane N. Nau

ROCHESTER - Jane Norfleet (Chamberlain) Nau, 76, of Aspen Lane, died March 5, 2002, in Davenport, Fla., after a sudden illness.

Born on Feb. 8, 1926, in Collins, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Lavelle and Velma (Walters) Shoemake.

Mrs. Nau lived in Somersworth, for 35 years before moving to Barrington where she lived for 11 years. She has resided in Gonic for the past five years. She was also a winter resident of Haines City, Fla., where she has been going for the past 20 years.

Mrs. Nau, for the most part, was a homemaker but she was employed at Brettons Cleaners and as a bookkeeper at Granite State Bank. She also worked out of her home as a seamstress.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Barrington and the Marantha Club of the Dover Baptist Church. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by all.

Mrs. Nau was predeceased by her first husband of 30 years, Bernard Chamberlain.

Her second husband, Everett Nau, whom she was married to for 21 years, died March 15, 2002. (See obituary on this page.)

She is survived by her daughters, Beth (Chamberlain) Holidge of Concord and Sally (Chamberlain) Dixon of Rollinsford; sons, Dana Chamberlain of Somersworth and Mark Chamberlain of Concord; step-daughters, Sherrill (Nau) Gravalles of Somersworth and Joyce (Nau) Waggett of Bealeton, Va.; step-son, Everett B. Nau of Kenosha, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her brothers, L.V. (Bennett) Shoemake and Hershell Shoemake, both of Collins, Miss.; her sisters, Patricia (Shoemake) Raulston of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Edwina (Shoemake) Grahm of Brenden, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Nau's was predeceased by her brother, Alec Shoemake.

NAU - Jane Norfleet (Chamberlain) Nau, 76, of 4 Aspen Lane, Rochester, N.H., died March 5, 2002, in Davenport, Fla. Calling hours will be held from 12-2 p.m. today at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery, North Berwick, Maine, in the spring.
