Clyde G. Tirabassi

EXETER - Clyde G. Tirabassi, 88, of Langdon Place of Exeter, died, Sunday, March 17, 2002. Born Jan. 24, 1914 in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Frank and Cecelia (Marcchiony) Tirabassi.

He was raised in Lynn, Mass., and was a graduate of Lynn English High School. He lived in Beverly, Mass., for most of his life and moved to Methuen, Mass., where he lived for 25 years, moving to Exeter in September of this year.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne in the Pacific Theater. He retired as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He worked for Sears Roebuck and Company as a salesman in their Salem, Natick and Methuen stores. He enjoyed caring for his yard and home and volunteered for several area organizations.

Family members include his wife of 58 years, Josephine (Pellegrini) Tirabassi of Exeter; one son, Donald F. Tirabassi and his wife, Maren, of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Matthew D. and Maria I. Tirabassi, both of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

TIRABASSI - Clyde G. Tirabassi, 88, of Langdon Place of Exeter, N.H., died March 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road in Exeter, Thursday at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectively invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from noon until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or a charity of one's choice. Private burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen, Mass.

Pauline R. Ramsdell

YORK, Maine - Pauline Ruth Ramsdell, 63, of Nonantum Trail, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born April 25, 1938, in Rochester, N.H., daughter of Frank E. and Rose (Patenaude) Glidden.

She worked side by side with her husband, Earl, establishing the Earl Ramsdell Stone and Gravel Company in York. She was a hard worker and oftentimes was seen in one truck with her young sons while Earl was loading gravel into another truck.

She enjoyed knitting and doing crafts. She was a loving and devoted grandmother to her three grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Kittery Rotary Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl E. Ramsdell, who died June 14, 1995, and by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, David E. Ramsdell of Cape Neddick, and Ronald and Linda Ramsdell of Cape Neddick; two brothers, Roland Glidden of El Paso, Texas, and George Glidden of Farmington, N.H.; two sisters, Joyce King of Rochester, N.H., and Jean Gains of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Linda Stabrow of Cape Neddick; three grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her mixed-breed collie and black Labrador dog, Jimmy.

RAMSDELL - Pauline R. Ramsdell, of York, Maine, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division Inc., 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Grayel G. Johnson

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Grayel G. Johnson, 31, of Brookline, died March 4, 2002, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 7, 1970, in Melrose, Mass., the son of Franklin C. Johnson of Nashua and Gayle E. Johnson of Epping.

He was a 1988 honor graduate of Epping High School. He showed an early interest and talent in art and was chosen class artist and received an art scholarship upon graduation. He attended the University of New Hampshire and was a 1998 graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art.

He was a free-lance artist and a projectionist at the Brattle Street and Coolidge Street theaters. He had previously been a guard at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, for many years.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Bryn Johnson of Portsmouth; his stepmother, Dorothy Johnson of Nashua; his maternal grandparents, Herman and Virginia Eames of Exeter; his paternal grandparents, Col. Franklin C. Johnson and Nancy E. Johnson of Northfield; one uncle; and several cousins.

JOHNSON - Grayel G. Johnson, 31, of Brookline, Mass., died March 4, 2002. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. in the Epping Community Church. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. SPCA, P.O. 196, Stratham, NH 03885, or to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Evelyn A. Squire

RYE - Evelyn A. Squire, 96, of 795 Washington Road, formerly of North Hampton and Hampton, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Webster at Rye.

A direct descendant of one of the five families who founded Hampton, she was born in North Hampton on July 10, 1905, the daughter of the late Charles W. and Sarah E. (Taylor) Philbrick.

She was a graduate of Hampton Academy with the Class of 1924 and Portsmouth Normal School. She worked as a schoolteacher at the Center School in Hampton from 1924 to 1938, where she was known as Miss Philbrick.

She lived in North Hampton for many years, moving to Hampton in 1975 and to Webster at Rye in 1995.

She was the wife of the late George E. Squire, who died in 1964.

Family members include one daughter, Betsey A. Davis of Hampton; three grandchildren, Daniel P. Lamie and his wife, Denise, of Kingston, Christopher T. Lamie and his wife, Jennifer, of Hampton, and Susan D. Lamie and her husband, Steven; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Lamie of Hampton; and one great-niece.

Catherine L. Madeira

YARMOUTH, Maine - Catherine (Kitty) Lewis Madeira, 76, of Yarmouth Bluffs, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Bremerton, Wash., youngest daughter of Capt. Roy Leslie Lewis, USN, and Edna Earle Lewis. As the daughter of a Navy chaplain, she grew up living in China, the Philippines and Japan. She graduated from Norfolk, Va., High School and Radcliffe College, Class of 1946. She later earned her master's degree in education from the University of Southern Maine.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, John Jay Madeira; and four sons, John (Peter) Jay Madeira Jr. of Melrose, Mass., and Southwest Harbor, Timothy L. Madeira of Long Beach, Miss., Matthew L. Madeira of Portsmouth, N.H., and Frederick R. Madeira of Cumberland; her sister, Leslie Loveskey of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Heather Ni of Glasgow, Scotland, Rose Madeira of Bernard, Nick Madeira of Bar Harbor, Paige, Abigail and Kent Madeira of Rangeley, John and Nathan Madeira of Cumberland, and Alison and Jason Madeira of Portsmouth, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren.

As an elementary school teacher, she taught for several years in Poquonock, Conn., and Wilbraham, Mass., and for 25 years at the Plummer-Motz school in Falmouth. She always enjoyed being remembered and greeted by her former pupils.

An enthusiastic sailor, she and her family enjoyed exploring the waters of eastern Maine and Canada in their sailboat "Kittiwake." She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. She played bridge and tennis and was a long-suffering Red Sox fan and enjoyed University of Maine hockey. She was an excellent Scrabble player and particularly enjoyed beating her husband, sons and grandchildren regularly at the game.

She was a 30-year member of the Portland Yacht Club and a member of St. Mary's Garden Club, the Village Improvement Society of Yarmouth, Friends of the Falmouth Memorial Library and was vice president of the Casco Bay Newcomers Club.

MADEIRA - Catherine (Kitty) Lewis Madeira, 76, of Yarmouth, Maine, died March 15, 2002. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the First Universalist Church, 146 Main St., Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Capital Fund Drive of the First Universalist Church of Yarmouth, Maine.

Winifred I. Tight

HARVARD, Mass. - Winifred I. (Fuller) Orell Tight, 69, of Foxglove Apartments, 254 Ayer Road, Harvard, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, in Deaconess Nashoba Hospital in Ayer, after being stricken ill that day.

Born in Rocky Hill, Conn., she was the daughter of Merton W. and Edith (Briggs) Fuller. She lived in Rocky Hill for 14 years, Boylston, Mass. for 22 years, six years in North Grafton, six years in Shrewsbury, and 12 years in Holden, moving to Harvard in 1992. She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Orell, and her second husband, Harold A. Tight Jr.

She was a dietary aide at Holden Nursing Home, a sales person at Days Gone By in Clinton and former manager at Williamsburg Court Apartments in Shrewsbury.

She attended Boylston schools and was a graduate of Worcester Girls Trade High School, earning a certificate in Culinary Arts.

She was a former member of First Congregational Church in Hampstead, AARP, a Webelo Club Scout den mother in North Grafton, a former active member of The Republican Town Committee and a crossing guard in Holden.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary A. Berthiaume of Webster, Deborah M. Cuevas of Southbridge, Sandra J. Blye of Hampstead, N.H., Diane R. Cunic of Derry, N.H. and Sharon Orell of Worcester; three sons, Stewart J. Orell of Smithville, Tenn., Edward J. Orell and Todd W. Orell, both of Worcester; three sisters, Dorothy E. McDougald of Boylston, Marion R. Dowell of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Marjorie J. Clayton of Doweltown, Tenn.; her stepmother, Edna Fuller of Westboro; one stepbrother, Douglas M. Fuller of Norwich, Conn.; one stepsister, Alice L. Miller of Grafton; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

TIGHT - Winifred I. (Fuller) Orell Tight, 69, of Foxglove Apartments, 254 Ayer Road, Harvard, Mass., died March 16, 2002. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 19, at 2 p.m. in the Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton, Mass. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in North Grafton. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday, March 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38103.

Irene A. Stivers

AMESBURY, Mass. - Funeral services for Irene A. Stivers were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H., with a memorial service held at the Greenland Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Greenland, N.H. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Stivers' son, Glenn Stivers. Organist was Ida Morang.

A. Parker Twombly

GREENLAND - A. Parker Twombly, 98, of 3 Portsmouth Ave., died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth.

Born in Portsmouth, he was a son of Herman C. and Nellie (Lang) Twombly. He attended Portsmouth schools and the University of New Hampshire. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a leading-man machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32nd Degree of Nashua; and Bektash Shrine of Concord.

He was predeceased by his wife, Edith J. (Lilley) Twombly, in 1979; and a brother, Alfred Twombly.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Twombly of Chevy Chase, Md.; a son, A. Parker Twombly Jr., of Dorchester, Mass.; and a brother, Robert Twombly of Silver Spring, Md.

DACEY - Lawrence F. "Larry" Dacey, 62, of Kittery, Maine, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held one hour prior to the service, from 12 to 1 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home.

SQUIRE - Evelyn A. Squire, 96, of Rye, died Monday, March 18, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the N.H. SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

Pearl M. Ferrelli

GREENLAND - Pearl (Keene) Mills Ferrelli, 92, widow of Joseph M. Ferrelli, of 188 Portsmouth Ave., died Monday, March 18, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Kittery, Maine, on Nov. 18, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Arthur W. and Dora E. (Granfield) Keene. She attended Portsmouth High School.

She was employed as a paymaster at the former Morley Button Co. in Portsmouth, retiring in 1975 after 33 years.

She enjoyed her many friendships from the "Pic'n Pay Coffee Club" and loved to go down to the beach and look out over the ocean, and she truly appreciated her daughters and their families.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Beatty and her husband, Charley, of Greenland, and Joan Murphy of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Pamela Murphy of Concord, Tom Mills of Newington, Clara Ricker of Hooksett, and John Mills of Connecticut; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Mary Mahoney and her husband, Ed, of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Barbara L. Keene of Portsmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Herbert C. Mills, on Sept. 30, 1981; five brothers, Herman, Earl, Leslie, Robert, and Arthur "Bud" Keene; and one sister, Myrtle.

Robert M. Grover

TRAVIS, Texas - Robert Merle Grover, 76, formerly of Troy, N.H., died March 14, 2002, at his residence. Services were held on March 17, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Rosebud, Texas.

He was born July 4, 1925, in Augusta, Maine, to Nathan Merle and Mildred Newton Grover. He graduated from Cony High School in Augusta and from the University of Maine in Orono. He served in the U. S. Army. He was a mechanical engineer and held positions at Troy Mills, Troy, N.H.; Philip D. Moran Electrical Contractor in Keene N.H.; and C.R. Bard Inc. in Fitzwilliam, N.H. He retired in 1989. He held numerous professional affiliations during his career and was most recently an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Rosebud, Texas.

He was predeceased by his two sisters, Margery Grover of Augusta, Maine, and Barbara Elliott of Northport, Maine; and his former wife Constance Poirier Grover of Troy, N.H.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Wallace Grover of Travis, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Grover and his wife, Pauline, of East Wallingford, Vt.; a son, Courtney Grover of Newmarket, N.H.; daughters Sue Mellin and her husband, John, of Greenland, N.H., and Katharin Smith and her husband, Gerry, of Portsmouth, N.H.; former wife Shirley Woodman Lowe of Portsmouth, N.H.; grandchildren Sean Theodore and his wife, Robin, and Amanda and Erin Smith; and one great-grandchild, Shane Theodore.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Suite 1, Manchester, NH 03101, or to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, P.O. Box 142, Bloomfield, CT 06002.

Lawrence F. Dacey

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Lawrence F. "Larry" Dacey, 62, of Kittery, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H., on Wednesday. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor of the Greenland Community Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, officiated.

Burial was in Proprietors Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.

Bearers were Willie Wills, Raymond Wills, Bill McCrary and Timothy Dacey.

Roger E. Watson

CONCORD - Roger Edward Watson, 81, a summer resident of York Beach, Maine, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Concord Hospital.

Born in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Roger Earl and Catherine (Mulligan) Watson. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Martinsburg and was a founding member of the school's first basketball team.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and took part in the Aleutian campaign.

He was a letter carrier for the Concord post office and operated Watson Antiques with his wife many years ago.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church in Concord, American Legion Post #21, VFW Post #1631, and the Sons of the Confederacy. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch #72, where he served as secretary. He was very active with the local AFL-CIO and was a member of Letter Carriers of America. He was also a member of the Concord Planning Board. He was a cartoonist for several local newspapers and was an early American decorator, having decorated the Concord Coach for the Concord Bicentennial. He played in the Concord softball league and enjoyed flea markets and yard sales.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (Hannigan) Watson of Concord; three sons, Thomas Watson of Portsmouth, Robert Watson of Rochester, and James Watson of Wellesley, Mass.; two daughters, Joyce Watson of Dover, and Nancy Watson of Natick, Mass.; nine granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Trewhella.

WATSON - Roger Edward Watson, 81, of Concord, and a summer resident of York Beach, Maine, died Wednesday March 20, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Peter's Church, 153 North Main St., Concord. Burial will follow in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Concord. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carmelite Monastery, 275 Pleasant St., Concord, NH 03301.

Carolyn E. Andrews

DURHAM - Carolyn E. Andrews, 85, also of Cambridge, Mass., died suddenly in her sleep on March 20, 2002, at the Harvard Club in New York City.

She was born on Oct. 3, 1916, in Berkeley, Calif., and was raised in Kodiak, Alaska. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Nellie Erskine. She returned to California and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in art history. From 1971 until 1981 she was the associate master of Leverette House at Harvard University, where her husband, Kenneth Andrews, was the master of Leverette House. She was the widow of Chaffee Hall.

Family members include her husband of 32 years, Kenneth R. Andrews Sr.; one son, Douglas Hall of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Marie Katrak of Boston, Mass., and Durham, and Lyn Hejinian of Oakland, Calif.; one stepson, Kenneth R. Andrews Jr. of Marlboro, Mass.; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Andrews of Maynard, Mass.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joyce A. Wilcox

SOMERSWORTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Joyce A. (Keen) Wilcox, 63, of 682 Sherwood Glen, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. Linn Opderbecke, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington, officiated.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Opderbecke.

Bearers were Carmon Caligiure, Carlton Malone, Mike Caligiure, Rodney Malone, John Kloczkowski and Edward Kloczkowski.

Raymond L. Erickson

EXETER - Raymond L. Erickson, known to friends and family as Roy, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Exeter Hospital surrounded by members of his family.

He was born in Jamestown, N.Y., on Feb. 11, 1925. Following graduation from Jamestown High School in 1943, he entered the U.S. Army. He served as a rifleman in Company G of the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for participation in the Central Europe Campaign, where he served 13 months in Germany and Czechoslovakia.

Following his service in World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology, magna cum laude, from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1951. He received his master's degree in 1954, and his Ph.D. in 1962, both from the University of California, Los Angeles.

He was a psychological intern for the State of California Department of Corrections in 1954. He was a lecturer for the University of Maryland Overseas Program in Europe from 1956 to 1958, and an assistant professor of psychology at Whittier College in California from 1958 to 1963, when he accepted an associate professorship at the University of New Hampshire.

During his 31-year tenure at UNH, he was chairman of the psychology department, dean of the graduate school, and director of research, interim vice president for academic affairs, and special assistant to the president. He was president of the New Hampshire State Psychological Association from 1967 to 1968. He retired in July 1992.

After retiring, he served on the board of the New Hampshire Visiting Nurses Association.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

He was the husband for 47 years of Barbara Erickson.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Leslie Cooper of Portland, Maine, Laurel Erickson of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Douglas Erickson of Silver Spring, Md.; two grandchildren, Katherine and Robert Cooper; two brothers, Frank and Edward Erickson of Jamestown, N.Y.; and a sister, Joyce Hansen of Frewsburg, N.Y.
