Freda L. Murphy

PORTSMOUTH - Freda L. Murphy, 72, formerly of 140 Court St., died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the Sunbridge nursing home.

Born in Fort Fairfield, Maine, on March 11, 1930, she was a daughter of Ella Greenier and the late Edward Greenier.

A resident of the Seacoast for many years, she was an avid bingo player and enjoyed visiting with her many friends at the Feaster Apartments and her friend Lennie Geraci at Sunbridge.

The widow of Edward D. Murphy, who died in 1997, she is survived by her mother, who lives in Florida; two daughters, Bette Boston of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Bonnie Painter of Eliot, Maine; three sons, Wayne Rand of Sioux Falls, S.D., Eugene Painter of Portsmouth, and Dan Murphy of Dover; three brothers, Robert Greenier of Newington, Edward Greenier of Presque Isle, Maine, and Charles Greenier of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Marge Evans of Florida; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one aunt, Bessie "Pearl" Greenier of Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Mack Rand; and two brothers, Franklin and Richard Greenier.

MURPHY - Freda L. Murphy, 72, formerly of 140 Court St., died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be in Newington Cemetery.

Clyde G. Tirabassi

EXETER - The funeral for Clyde G. Tirabassi, 88, of Langdon Place, was held Thursday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. The Rev. Donald Jennings officiated. Denise Kelly was the organist, and Jo Chase and Susan Pratt-Smith were the soloists. Words of remembrance were offered by Mr. Tirabassi's son, Donald, and his daughter-in-law, Maren. Private burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, Mass.

Margaret E. Nichols

PORTSMOUTH - Margaret Elizabeth Nichols, 86, of 188 Jones Ave., SunBridge of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Worcester, Mass., on Aug. 30, 1915, the daughter of Thomas and Ursula (Dudurkevicia) Glodas, Lithuanian immigrants, she was a resident of Hampton for 40 years before moving to Portsmouth in 1999.

She enjoyed her home, planting flowers in her yard, and being with her family and her cats.

She was the wife of the late Charles C. Nichols, who died in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Charles C. Nichols Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Gabrielle S. Nichols of Portsmouth; and a sister-in-law, Helen V. Glodas, and nephew, Charles T. Glodas, both of North Grafton, Mass.

NICHOLS - Margaret E. Nichols, 86, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died March 20, 2002. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862.

Donald E. Short

CHESTER, Vt. - Donald E. Short, 75, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at his home, after a short illness. Born in Bellows Falls on Aug. 2, 1926, he was a son of Edward J. Short and Helen (Spencer) Short.

He was educated in Bellows Falls and attended Bellows Falls High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II.

He worked for Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield as a machinist until his retirement in 1989 after 42 years. He served with the Chester Volunteer Fire Department.

He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and sugaring, and was a fine woodworker, making furniture.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte (Pebbles) Short; a son, Keith Short of Langdon, N.H.; two daughters, Gail Kindberg of Stratham, N.H., and Jean Merritt of North Springfield; three stepdaughters, Linda Holbrook of Langdon, N.H., Kathy Bailey of Barnstead, N.H., and Donna Ward of Charlestown, N.H.; a brother, Eugene Short of Portsmouth, N.H.; a sister, Myrtle Litchfield of Harvest, Ala.; an uncle, Fred Spencer of Middlebury; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandsons; and four nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, of 38 years, Eleanor Short; and two infant sons.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice/VNA, 46 South Main St., White River Junction, VT 05001.

Richard M. Cyr Sr.

CLAREMONT - Richard M. "Dick" Cyr Sr., 83, of Pine Hill Mobilehome Park, died Wednesday afternoon, March 20, 2002, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

He was born in Proctor, Vt., on Dec. 24, 1918, a son of Frederick and Olga (Lertola) Cyr. He graduated from Mt. St. Joseph School in Rutland, Vt., in 1937 and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Air Transport Command. He had resided in Claremont since 1948. He retired in 1981, having worked as a self-employed electrical contractor for 17 years. Previously, he worked for Connecticut Valley Electric Company for 13 years, Central Vermont Public Service for seven years, Claremont Airways for 12 years, Gerrish Auto for five years, Sullivan Nutrition Meals on Wheels for five years, and Community Transportation as a bus driver for five years.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Father Cote Council #1820 Knights of Columbus, Italian American Club of Rutland, Vt., National Association of Basketball Officials, Claremont Country Club, AARP, Civil Air Patrol and was chairman of the Airport Advisory Board. With the Civil Air Patrol he was involved in many search-and-rescue missions from 1971 to 1995, including the 1978 blizzard in Boston. In August 1993, flying for N.H. Civil Air Patrol, he was assigned to help in disaster relief for the Midwest flood at St. Louis, Mo., with duties that included airborne traffic control. He was awarded N.H. Wing Senior Airman in 1993 for service in the flood in Missouri in 1993, the N.H. Wing Senior Member of the Year in 1993, the Commander Commendation N.H. Wing in 1993, certificate of appreciation from N.E. Region in 1993, certificate of appreciation from Wing Commander in 1993, and retired as a command pilot in 1995.

The surviving family includes his wife, Anna A. (Prozzo) Cyr of Claremont, whom he married on May 26, 1941; five daughters, Patricia Columbia and her husband, Richard, of Claremont, Carol Ann Garneau and her husband, Ronald, of North Charlestown, Angela P. Ruest and her husband, Larry, of Keene, Anna Marie Bernard and her husband, Raymond, of Claremont, and Betty Jean Rose and her husband, Leonard, of Melbourne, Fla.; one son, Richard M. Cyr Jr. of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Louis Dazzi and Domenic Dazzi, both of Rutland, Vt.; one half-sister, Rose Dazzi of Rutland, Vt.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Cyr, in 1985; and a grandson, Christopher Wade Palmer, on Jan. 17, 2002.

CYR - Richard M. "Dick" Cyr Sr., 83, of Claremont, died March 20, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Stringer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stanley J. Piwowar, pastor of St. Joseph Church, officiating. The family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to St. Joseph Church Renovation Fund, P.O. Box 824, Claremont, NH 03743.

Helen B. Adams

YORK, Maine - Helen B. Adams, 80, of 230 Scituate Road, died March 21, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 6, 1921, in York, a daughter of Russell E. and Augusta (Woodward) Trafton, and was a 1939 graduate of York High School.

She had worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.

She attended the Union Congregational Church of York Beach and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed times with her family and was an avid reader and Red Sox fan. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and bird-watching.

She was predeceased by her husband, James B. Adams, in 1970.

Survivors include two sons, Russell J. Adams and his wife, Deborah, and Richard L. Adams and his wife, Brenda, all of York; one brother, Chester Trafton and his wife, Grace, of York; two sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Harriett) Lawry of York and Mrs. Lewis (Norma) Joslyn of Center Barnstead, N.H.; three granddaughters, Heather Henson, Carol Adams and Jennifer Adams; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Henson.

ADAMS - Helen B. Adams, 80, of Scituate Road, York, Maine, widow of James B. Adams, died March 21, 2002, in York. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in the First Parish Cemetery in York. There are no visiting hours. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Cecile M. Dillon

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Cecile May (Curtis) Dillon, 74, of Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Wednesday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Edward J. Kelley, pastor, officiated. Altar server was Richard Curry. Eucharistic minister was Joyce Miller.

Readings were given by Kimberly Giacalone and Jennifer Pinard. Presentation of the gifts was performed by James Turck, Carrie Turck and Christopher Stewart. Cantor was Marsha Hanson, and Marion Arnoldy was organist.

In attendance were communicants of the Immaculate Conception Church and representatives from Edgewood Centre.

Burial will be in the Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock.

Rosary services were offered at the funeral home by Sister Virginia Griffin on Wednesday afternoon.

Bernard W. Murphy

FREMONT - Bernard W. Murphy, 83, of Old Ridge Road, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at his home after a long illness.

He was born on April 23, 1918, in Concord, the son of Daniel B. and Edith L. (Giddis) Murphy.

He grew up in Concord, had been a resident of Fremont for the past 22 years, and was formerly a resident of Billerica, Mass., for 19 years.

Mr. Murphy was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II.

He worked numerous jobs including assistant manager for the Burlington Mall and manager for the Methuen Mall. He worked for 22 years at the Boston Shipyards and just recently until his health became poor at Bus N' Bodies in Plaistow for six years.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Epping.

Mr. Murphy was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Agnes (McCarville) Murphy, who died in 1990.

He is survived by two daughters, Leslie Currier and Dorothy "Dolly" Waters, both of Fremont; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Gilman of Virginia Beach, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

MURPHY - Bernard W. Murphy, 83, of Old Ridge Road, Fremont, N.H., died March 22, 2002. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Epping. Burial will be in the Leavitt Cemetery, Fremont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Paul Keriazes

HAMPTON - The funeral for Paul Keriazes, 70, of 12th Street, who died March 16, 2002, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Angelo Pappas, pastor of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Pappas. The flag that covered the casket was folded by a detachment of Air Force personnel and presented to Mr. Keriazes' widow, Catherine (Kanteres) Keriazes.

Taps was sounded. Pallbearers were James Hatzos, Philip Hatzos, James Covatis, Charles Lylis, Thomas Keriazes and Paul Keriazes.

Michael J. Lacasse

ROCHESTER - Michael J. Lacasse, 45, of 280 Old Dover Road, died on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born on June 9, 1956, the son of Jacques G. Lacasse of Rochester and the late Betty R. (Meissner) Lacasse.

Mr. Lacasse was raised in Rochester and was a graduate of Spaulding High School. He lived for several years in Exeter, moving to Rochester four years ago.

He was a facilities manager for the Profile Metal Forming Co. in Raymond. He was a very dedicated son, father, brother and friend and enjoyed boating, hiking and snowmobiling. He was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed coaching from the sidelines for his son's hockey team.

In addition to his father, family members include one son, Bradley J. Lacasse of Hampton Falls; one daughter, Sara L. Lacasse of Exeter; their mother, Cindy L. (Sharp) Lacasse of Exeter; one brother, Peter J. Lacasse of Rochester; three sisters, Denise A. Gannarelli of Warner Robins, Ga., Diane M. Moody and Lisa A. Warren, both of Rochester; several nieces and nephews, one grandnephew; and a special friend.

LACASSE - Michael J. Lacasse, of 280 Old Dover Road, Rochester, died on March 21, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Front Street, Exeter, on Monday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the New Hampshire SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03888. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth C. Conroy

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth Catherine Ann Conroy, 72, of 15 Edgewood Road, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Dover on Jan. 29, 1926, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Winifred (McKenna) Reardon.

She attended St. Mary Academy in Dover and graduated from Dover High School with the Class of 1944. She was employed as a secretary at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until her marriage.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Robert Conroy; four children, Irene Allen and her husband, Tom, of Livingston Manor, N.Y., Laurence Conroy of Cape Neddick, Maine, Bonnie Orr and her husband, Dale, of Portsmouth, and Robert Conroy Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Dover; nine grandchildren, John and Michael Allen, Justin and Cameron Orr, and Brett, Brooke, Casey and Rachel Conroy; one great-granddaughter, Montana Barker; two sisters, Winifred Viger of Sanbornville, N.H., and Constance Reardon of Portsmouth; one brother, Lawrence Reardon of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

CONROY - Elizabeth Catherine Ann Conroy, 76, of 15 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, died March 21, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church Route 1 (Lafayette Road) Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Adult Day Program at the Portsmouth Center for Seniors, 127 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Josephine D. Britt

PORTSMOUTH - Josephine D. Britt, 93, of 105 Hillcrest Drive, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth.

Born Aug. 17,1908, in Addison, Maine, she was the daughter of William E. and Margaret (Joy) Wass. She graduated with honors from Portland High School with the Class of 1927.

She was the widow of Charles F. Britt who died in 1971.

Survivors include her three children, Nolan Britt and his wife Dora of Hampton; Joyce Manfred of Cumberland, R.I. and Daniel Britt of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four nieces. She was predeceased by five brothers.

BRITT - Josephine D. Britt, 93, of 105 Hillside Drive, Portsmouth, died March 21, 2002. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only please. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Evelyn A. Squire

HAMPTON - The funeral for Evelyn A. (Philbrick) Squire, 96, of Rye, and formerly of North Hampton and Hampton, who died March 18, 2002, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, followed by a graveside service in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. Mrs. Squires was a direct descendant of one of the five families who founded Hampton.

The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Davis, Martin Aronson and four of Mrs. Squire's former students including, A. Samuel Hoyt, Harold Fernald, John Holman and Dave Colt.

A memorial service was also conducted by the Rev. Moore on Friday at Webster at Rye. Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends.

Pearl M. Ferrelli

GREENLAND - Funeral services for Pearl (Keene) Mills Ferrelli, 92, of 188 Portsmouth Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Thursday. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Dana Bisbee.

In attendance were many friends from the "Pic'n Pay Coffee Club." Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.

Bearers were her two grandsons, Tom W. Mills and John Mills; her two nephews, Robert A. Keene and Donald Keene; and Herbert D. Ross and Dana Bisbee.

Mary T. Silfvenius

RYE - Mary T. Silfvenius, 84, of 795 Washington Road, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Webster at Rye.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., on June 20, 1917, the daughter of the late George and Louise (Mendoza) Reynolds.

Mrs. Silfvenius was a 1935 graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School in Lynn, and also graduated from Bryant & Stratton Commercial School in 1937 with a degree in business administration.

She resided in Lynn until 1954, moving to Elmira, N.Y., and then to North Hampton from 1959 to 1964, then to Schenectady, N.Y. She moved to Greenland in 1974, and most recently to Rye in 1997.

Mrs. Silfvenius was the wife of the late Gustav Silfvenius, who died in 1991.

Survivors include one son, Charles Silfvenius of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.; three daughters, Paula L. Dunn of Ballston Lake, N.Y., Christine Silfvenius of Hooksett, and Sheila Silfvenius of Divide, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, George Reynolds.

SILFVENIUS - Mary T. Silfvenius, 84, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, died March 21, 2002. A wake service will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Sunday at 3 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home, Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to a charity of one's choice.

KELLEY - Joseph Sayward Kelley, 79, of 15 Red Coat Lane, Hampton, and 5460 Norlander Drive, Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to call at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment is in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

WEISNER - Max Weisner, 89, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, and formerly of 7 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, died Friday, March 22, 2002. Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, Sunday at noon. Friends invited. Memorial donations may be made to the Eva Weisner Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Pisquataqua Savings Bank; or to Temple Israel Weisner Endowment Fund. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
