Edna St. John

EXETER - Edna St. John, 77, of Main Street, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a period of failing health.

A native of Exeter, she was born Nov. 29, 1925, the daughter of the late George Andrew Glover and Eleanor (McLane) Glover.

She was a custodian with her husband for many years at the Star of East Lodge in Exeter. She enjoyed the New York Yankees and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Arthur St. John of Exeter; a daughter, Mary Braley of Epping; a son, Arthur G. St. John of Stratham; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Glover of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

ST. JOHN - Edna St. John, 77, of Main Street, Exeter, died March 21, 2002. Calling hours will be held Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, noon to 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Jamie Moynihan will officiate. A private burial will follow. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, ME/NH/VT Affiliate, 20 Merrimack St., Manchester, NH 03101; or The American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101. Brewitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Roger S. Holden

CORNISH, Maine - Roger S. Holden, 89, of 379 Pound Hill Road, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at his home.

Born on Jan. 30, 1913, in Newburyport, Mass., he was the son of Gerald and Mabel Foss Holden.

He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in 1930. He served in the United States Coast Guard Temporary Reserves during World War II.

He was an electrical engineer and worked for Stone and Webster in Boston for 25 years. He also worked for A.B. Reed in Boston. He was then self-employed for a number of years and worked as a consultant until 1997.

He was a long-standing member and elder of the Limington Congregational Church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kittery, as well as a member of the local Masonic Lodge in Kittery.

He enjoyed life, his nation, and most of all, his family.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis B. Holden of Cornish; a son, James Glasgow of Standish; two daughters, Jessica Lavey of Plymouth, Mass., and Barbara Pike of Kittery Point; a brother, Louis Holden of Eliot; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

HOLDEN - Roger S. Holden, 89, of 379 Pound Hill Road, Cornish, Maine, died March 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 25, at the Limington Congregational Church, Route 11. The Rev. Doug Walker will officiate. Interment will be later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacopee Rescue Unit, P.O. Box 367, Parsonsfield, ME 04047. Arrangements are by the York Funeral Chapel, Cornish.

Constance Miller

EXETER - Funeral services for Constance (Killam) Miller, 91, of 81 High St., Exeter, who died March 20, 2002, were held Friday from the Brewitt Funeral Home in Exeter.

The Rev. Jane Geftken Henderson of the Exeter Congregational Church officiated at the services and committal at Exeter Cemetery.

In attendance were Mrs. Scott Bullard, representing the Exeter Chapter of the DAR, and Mrs. Carl Brewitt, representing the Exeter Woman's Club. The eulogy was given by Sandra Cross, administrator of the Eventide Home of Exeter.

Mrs. Miller, widow of Fred Miller, had resided for the past 25 years in Exeter, was a past president of the Exeter Woman's Club and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Harold F. Magoon

SEABROOK - Harold F. Magoon, 85, of Staples Street, formerly a state representative from Exeter, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Shelby BMC in Alabaster, Ala., after a period of failing health.

Born on Oct. 31, 1916, in Newmarket, he was the son of the late Perley R. and Julia (Donovan) Magoon.

He lived most of his life in Exeter where he was a well-known mail carrier for the Exeter post office, retiring several years ago. He served as state representative from Exeter for 22 years until five years ago. He moved to Seabrook three years ago to live with his daughter.

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter, a member of the Knights of Columbus of Exeter, and a member of the Exeter Kiwanis Club.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, and was discharged from Fort McClellan in Alabama. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 32 of Exeter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Wanda Magoon, who died in 1997.

He is survived by one son, Roger Magoon of Goffstown; two daughters, Kathleen Allred of Seabrook, and Arlene Wilson of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren; three brothers, Ernest Magoon of Daytona, Fla., Donald Magoon of Exeter, and Bernard Magoon of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

MAGOON - Harold F. Magoon, 85, of Staples Street, Seabrook, formerly of Exeter, died March 20, 2002. Calling hours will be today (Sunday) from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Exeter. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Kathleen Allred in trust for St. Jude Children's Hospital, 163 Staples St., Seabrook, NH 03874.

Max Weisner

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Max "Mannie" Weisner, 89, widower of Eva (Zack) Weisner, died Friday evening, March 22, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, in the loving presence of his children, their spouses and his grandchildren.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 1912, he was the son of the late Samuel and Anna (Yakkerson) Weisner. He spent his younger years in Williamsburg and Brighton Beach, N.Y.

He was graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn and pursued religious training at Hebrew Yeshiva. He was very well-educated in Judaism and often assisted at the temple reading the Torah.

His career in the women's apparel industry began in the garment district on Seventh Avenue in New York City. After relocating to Portsmouth, he and his wife founded Eva's Shoppe, a women's clothing store at 74 Congress St., in October of 1937.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1983 after 47 years of marriage.

In 1986, he married Portsmouth native Judith (Cohen) Wiseman. Following his retirement in 1980, the family tradition was continued by his daughter, Myrna (Weisner) Promer, operating what is now Eva's Uniform Shoppe in the same location, 74 Congress St.

As a prominent local businessman, he was actively involved with the Downtown Associates. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Country Club, an original member of the Twilight League, and a former member of the Portsmouth Lions Club.

He was an active member at Temple Israel of Portsmouth, serving on the board of directors and as treasurer for 26 years. He was also assisting in conducting services and instructing children in Hebrew education. He was a member of the Temple Israel Brotherhood and B'nai B'rith. In 1997, he received the Temple's "Keter Shem Tov" (The Crown of a Good Name) award for his involvement and achievements. His passion in life were love of his religion, devotion to his family, pride in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and enjoyment of golf.

Survivors include his daughter, Myrna (Weisner) Promer and her husband, Howard, of Portsmouth; his son, Robert Weisner and his wife, Judith, of Dover; grandson, Daniel Promer and his wife, Tania, of Stratham; granddaughter, Jessica Weisner of Boston; great-grandchildren, Aaron Promer and Anna Promer of Stratham; a sister, Esther Strong of Brooklyn; sister-in-law, Thelma Loeb of Andover, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sonia Siez of Philadelphia.

WEISNER - Mr. Max "Mannie" Weisner, 89, of 346 Pleasant St. and formerly of 7 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, died March 22, 2002. Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, today (Sunday) at noon. Friends invited. Memorial donations may be made to the Eva Weisner memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Piscataqua Savings Bank, 15 Pleasant St., Portsmouth; or the Temple Israel Weisner Endowment Fund, c/o Temple Israel. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Myrna and Howard Promer, 7 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, today, Monday and Tuesday, with services at 6 p.m. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Kevin J. Cannon

YORK BEACH, Maine - Kevin James Cannon, 45, of Mary Street, and formerly of Revere, Mass., died Friday, March 22, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born Feb. 22, 1957, in Chelsea, Mass., son of Virginia (Lawrence) Cannon and the late Jesse Cannon. He was a graduate of Revere High School.

He lived in Revere most of his life, moving to York Beach last May to be closer to family. For four years, he was a taxi driver for the Patriot Taxi Co. in Revere. He also worked as a machine operator and laborer for many companies.

He loved dogs, especially his sister Karen's dog, "Poe," whom he took for many walks along the beach.

In addition to his mother, Virginia (Lawrence) Resca of York Beach, survivors include two brothers, Richard Cannon of Miami, Fla., and Paul Cannon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and two sisters, Karen Delano of York, and Kathleen Campo of Orlando, Fla.

CANNON - Kevin J. Cannon of York Beach, Maine, died March 22, 2002, at York Hospital. Visiting hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. today (Sunday) at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, followed by a funeral service at 5 p.m. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

C. Rita Leonard

YORK, Maine - C. Rita Leonard, 86, of Eldredge Road, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born Aug. 12, 1915, in New York City, daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Harrington) Henaghan.

She was an executive secretary for the Exxon Oil Co., Rockefeller Center, in New York, for 25 years, retiring in 1971.

She was a communicant of St. Dominic's Church in Brick, N.J., before moving to York five years ago from Brick Township. She was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter J. Leonard, in 1977.

Survivors include her dear friends and caregivers, Jack and Eileen Fleming of York, with whom she lived; and three nieces.

She was predeceased by her brother, John Henaghan, in the mid-1990s.

LEONARD - C. Rita Leonard of Eldredge Road, York, Maine, died March 23, 2002, at York Hospital. Visiting hours will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, followed by funeral services at 5 p.m. Private interment will be in Toms River, N.J. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160-B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

Leonard E. Hudson

STRAFFORD - Leonard E. "Lenny" Hudson Sr., 56, of 255 Crown Point Road, died Saturday morning, March 23, 2002, at his home following a struggle with cancer. He was surrounded by many of his family members and friends.

He was born July 19, 1945, in Beverly, Mass., son of Gilbert and Mary (Cobb) Hudson. He lived more than 30 years in Portsmouth before moving to Strafford about 13 years ago. He was a heavy-equipment operator for more than 30 years with Pike Industries of Tilton and Farmington.

Lenny was a loving and devoted husband, father and "Pa Pa." He was a kind and gentle man, always willing to help anyone in need. He was laid-back, easy-going, fun-loving, a practical joker, and loved to tease.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia (Miller) Hudson, whom he married in 1968; two sons, Leonard E. "Lenny" Hudson and his wife, Jen, of Rochester, and Todd E. Hudson of Rochester; four brothers including his twin, Tony Hudson of Newmarket, Gilbert Hudson of Portsmouth, James Hudson of Portsmouth, and Buddy Hudson of Berwick, Maine; three sisters, Rosemary Remick of Phoenix, Ariz., Margaret Newman of Northwood, and Donna Stadig of Greenland; two grandchildren, Natalie "Charlie" Hudson and Logan T. Hudson of Rochester; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

HUDSON - Leonard E. "Lenny" Hudson Sr. of Crown Point Road, Strafford, died March 23, 2002. Family members and friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 N. Main St., Rochester. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Sharon Tinkham, associate pastor of First Church Congregational, U.C.C., in Rochester, will officiate. Burial will be later this spring in Center Strafford Cemetery. The family suggests that instead of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the Rochester Visiting Nurses Association; or to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

KELLEY - Joseph Sayward Kelley, 79, of 15 Red Coat Lane, Hampton, and 5460 Norlander Drive, Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to call at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment is in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Francis W. Veino

CHELMSFORD, Mass. - Francis W. Veino, 83, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Exeter, N.H.

He was the husband of the late Mary (Griffin) Veino and the late Mary (Teehan) Veino.

A resident of Chelmsford for more than 33 years, he was born in Boston on June 8, 1918, a son of the late Earl E. and Catherine (Jordan) Veino.

He was a decorated World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Prior to retirement, he was a Boston firefighter stationed on the Boston Fire Boat.

He was a former member of the Chelmsford Elks and a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford.

He is survived by seven children, Frank Veino and his wife, Linda, of York, Maine, Lawrence Veino of Dracut, Nancy Buxton of Lowell, Ginger Hendry and her husband, Paul, of Chelmsford, Ann Marie Goodreault and her husband, Joe, of Exeter, N.H., Frank Teehan of Chelmsford, and John Veino of Romney, N.H.; three stepchildren, Rosemary Teehan of Waterville Valley, N.H., Lorraine Teehan of Arlington, and Kathleen Teehan of Rochester, N.H.; one brother, Edward Veino of Medford; 30 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Kathleen Daly, Mary Louise Perkins, Carol Hazen and James Veino.

VEINO - Francis W. Veino, 83, of Chelmsford, Mass., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Exeter. He was the husband of the late Mary (Griffin) Veino and the late Mary (Teehan) Veino. A funeral will be held at 8 a.m. on Wednesday from the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford, with a funeral Mass to be offered at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Chelmsford. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Joseph S. Kelley

HAMPTON - Joseph Sayward Kelley, 79, of 15 Red Coat Lane and 5460 Norlander Drive, Port Charlotte, Fla., died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, March 21, 2002, in Port Charlotte.

He was born in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Joseph T. and Elizabeth (Hickey) Kelley. Educated in the Wilmington schools in Massachusetts, he graduated from Stoughton Military Academy.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a petty officer 1st class, on the USS Big Horn, a camouflaged ship designed and positioned to spot and destroy subMarines. He later served on the USS Refuge, a hospital/rescue ship, and was deployed to both the Iwo Jima and Okinawa battle zones. He was reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet based in Brooklyn, N.Y. He remained active with the Naval Reserves, serving long enough for full retirement from the U.S. Navy.

It was during his tour in Brooklyn that he met and married Patricia (Dougherty) Kelley on April 21, 1946. married more than 55 years, together they raised eight wonderful children.

Following active duty with the Navy, he went to work for the MBTA in Boston, working weekends, overtime and often double shifts to see that his family was never wanting. He traveled extensively after his retirement, visiting his children in the areas of the world their military career had them assigned, including Europe and the United States. He was also fond of cruise ship vacations.

A seasonal resident of Hampton Beach for many years, he moved from his home in Wilmington, Mass., permanently to Hampton in 1984.

A loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed the times spent surrounded by family and friends. He was a Kennedy family enthusiast, an avid reader who read countless newspapers daily, and loved to play both cards and cribbage.

Sports, particularly baseball and football, were an important part of his leisure time, and he was one of the best "armchair quarterbacks" in the business.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, and was a member of both the Elks Club and the Italian American Club in Port Charlotte, Fla.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Florence E. (Mrs. Angelo) DiSano of Hampton, Maureen (Mrs. John) Irwin Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., Patricia C. (Mrs. Martin) Johnson of Bellevue, Wash., Barbara Jo (Mrs. Peter) Henderson Jr. of Rumson, N.J., Michael J. and his wife, Joanne, of Windham, MerriAnn M. (Mrs. Mark) DeTeso of Hampton, Deidre P. (Mrs. Patrick) Perrin of Hampton, and Shawn J. of Penacook; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

KELLEY - Joseph Sayward Kelley, 79, of 15 Red Coat Lane, Hampton, and 5460 Norlander Drive, Port Charlotte, Fla., died unexpectedly Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital, Port Charlotte. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to call at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment is in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Max Weisner

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Max, "Mannie" Weisner, 89, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of 7 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, were held on Sunday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with services held at Temple Israel in Portsmouth. Rabbi David Mark officiated. In attendance were members of the temple, including members of the board of directors, the Brotherhood of the Temple, and B'nai B'rith. Also in attendance were members of the Portsmouth Country Club. Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, with committal services conducted by Rabbi Mark. Bearers were Howard Promer, Daniel Promer, Keith Jaffe, Richard Collier, Andrew Karpman, Sherman Newton, Kevin Looser, Richard Robbins and Eric Enners.

Kimon M. Fulis

PORTSMOUTH - Kimon M. Fulis, 40, husband of Laurie (Robeck) Fulis, of 71 Kensington Road, and 16 Harvest Lane, York, Maine, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at his home in York.

He was born in Portsmouth on Sept. 25, 1961, the son of Constantina (Chrysanthou) Fulis and the late Mitchell K. Fulis.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth; he was a past president of the church council and was involved in many activities in the church. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1979; he was a member of the Order of DeMolay and a member of St. John's Lodge #1 F&AM of Portsmouth.

He was owner of the East West Trading Corp. in Hampton.

He was a very gentle, loving and generous man; his family and his faith were his priorities in life. He was always there to help his friends and anyone else who needed a hand. He enjoyed hunting, golf, camping and fishing with his son and special times with his daughters.

He enjoyed his rides with his friends on his Harley-Davidson, especially his ride to the Vietnam Veterans Wall in Washington, D.C.

Besides his wife of 20 years, and his mother of Portsmouth, he is survived by three children, Melissa Nicole Fulis, Sofia Eleni Fulis and Michael Kimon Fulis, all of Portsmouth, and York, Maine; one sister, Irene M. Kouloungis, of Lowell, Mass.; several nieces and nephews; and two godchildren, Chelsea and Mckenzie Cathcart.

He was predeceased by a sister, Efrosine Fulis Kenyon.

He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.

FULIS - Kimon M. Fulis, 40, of 71 Kensington Road, Portsmouth, and 16 Harvest Lane, York, Maine, died Saturday, March 23, 2002. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services by St. John's Lodge #1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday and prayer services by the Rev. Angelo Pappas at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to a trust that will be set up for his children.
