Eileen Hussey

PORTSMOUTH - Eileen (Grant) Hussey, 78, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at her home.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., on Feb. 18, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Ella (Verrette) Grant. She was educated in Portsmouth schools and was a lifelong resident here.

Ever the consummate professional, she carved out a career in accounting, retiring from Newicks Seafood Restaurant and its affiliated corporations. After her retirement, she moved to Florida for a few years but returned to Portsmouth because she missed the city and her friends and family.

She was actively involved in the ABC Quilt projects; though not a quilter herself, she was an integral part in the preparation and finishing work, coordinating the details of the large annual project at the Sunapee League of Craftsmen shows. Eileen never lost her quick wit and appeared contentious to some, but those who enjoyed the privilege of her love and friendship discovered a generous and loving soul.

She is survived by her three children, Brenda Pergerson of Barrington, Michael Perron of Eliot, Maine, and Leanne Bradley of Shrub Oak, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Inez Davidson of Lady Lakes, Fla., and Sharon Ritchey of Fitchburg, Mass.

She was predeceased by Jerome Hussey; a sister, Rita Stevens; and a brother, Richard Grant, all of Portsmouth.

Elizabeth K. Cummings

KITTERY, Maine - Elizabeth Knight Cummings, of 213A Meetinghouse Village, formerly of 68 Raydon Road Extension, York, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at her residence in Kittery.

She was born June 22, 1917, to George O. Wilson Jr. and Ada McQuaid Wilson in their Williams Avenue home in Kittery, Maine. She was a direct descendent of Nicholas Frost, who settled in Eliot in 1632, and of Gowan Wilson, an early Kittery settler in the 1650s. She took great pride in her English heritage, which she researched thoroughly, using original British source documents, and she proudly preserved this family history in books privately printed for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She graduated with honors in the college curriculum class of Traip Academy in 1935; in recent years she attended a number of Traip class reunions. A graduate of Fisher Business College in 1937, she was employed by the U.S. Navy. She served for one year as liaison between the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy on the LST program in Quincy, Mass. She retired in 1979, after serving for five years as secretary to the Chaplain Corps at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire, during which time she was instrumental in the development of the "Sunday Bulletin," the chaplains newsletter. She maintained many friendships from her early working years to the end of her life and was highly esteemed for her professional manner.

She was appointed a 1981 delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and had a deep concern for the welfare of the elderly. In the course of various studies, she became a certified nurse's assistant and also held a Maine real estate license and served as a notary public. Her genuine love affair with books, literature and learning led her to volunteer at the York Public Library for eight years, where she founded the most successful York Public Library book sale, which is held annually. Her enthusiasm for politics, in a bipartisan manner, over her lifetime led her to active volunteer work in both Boston and Maine, with an interest in both national politics and town government. She is the woman who kept McDonald's and fast food chains out of York; her unflagging community action served to maintain dignity and charm in historical York.

She treasured her extensive library of more than 800 books, all quite well-read, including some rare volumes and specifically a collection on George Washington, whom she revered as a true national hero whose praises deserve a wider song. She particularly appreciated Victorian life as described by Trollope.

Her marriage to Charles Beauregard of Lowell, Mass., at the onset of World War II ended in divorce, after which she established residence first in Wollaston, Mass., and ultimately on Pinckney Street, Louisburg Square, on Beacon Hill in Boston. It was her life on Beacon Hill as a single mother that forged her stalwart character; she thrived in this intellectual climate and often held Sunday salons with foreign postdoctoral students from M.I.T., developing lifelong friendships. During this time she worked for the United States Coast Guard and the Merchants Cooperative Bank in Boston.

For 35 years she was married to Dana A. Knight of Kittery Point, Maine. They also resided in Tenants Harbor and York, Maine, and for one year lived on Monhegan Island, during which time she kept an intimate journal of this solitary life. They enjoyed coastal cruising aboard the Nandales, a 38-foot boat Mr. Knight had built by hand. Mr. Knight, a noted lobsterman died in 1995.

In 1998, an unexpected surprise brought a lengthy courtship, and she became the wife of Robert C. Cummings, a retired engineer from Gardiner, Maine, and suffered much sadness when he died shortly after their marriage. They had met on a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield.

Her love of travel encompassed nine trips crossing the continental United States, visiting historical sites and monuments as well as family tours of Civil War battlefields, a joyous venture to Epcot in Florida with her grandchildren, a tour of France with her friend from M.I.T. days, and a splendid visit to England and the villages of her ancestors with her daughter in the year 2000. She spent many holidays in sunny California, welcomed the swallows back to Capistrano and enjoyed many museums in her lifetime, particularly the Boston Fine Arts, the Huntington Library and the Getty Museum.

She was blessed with the care of those who loved her before and at the time of her death.

She is survived by three children: Jacquelyn Beauregard Dillman of Newport Beach, Calif., Charles Beauregard, Red Hook, N.Y., and Christopher Frost Knight, York; one sister, Florence Williamson, Quincy, Mass.; seven grandchildren: Benjamin, Matthew and Andrew Cornforth, and Bradley and Brandon Dillman, all of California, and Colin and Amy Beauregard of North Carolina and New York, respectively; three great-grandchildren: Aidan Cornforth, Elizabeth Anne and Andrew Beauregard; seven stepchildren: Nancy Darst of Mobile, Ala., Dana A. Knight Jr. of Merrimack, N.H.; Leslie Frazier of Wyandotte, Okla., Richard Cummings of Gardiner, Bowen Dillman of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Yvette and Nicole Meunier of York.

After he retired, he began spending the winters in St. Augustine and became a permanent resident there in the early 1980s.
