Sheila T. Philbrick

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Sheila T. Philbrick, 59, died in the early morning on April 10, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born on April 18, 1942, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of George G. and Julia (Barry) Gordon. She was a 1960 graduate of St. Clement's High School in Medford, Mass.

She worked for Putnam Investments in Boston and later for Westinghouse at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She met Arthur Philbrick and moved to York in 1970, when they married.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. She was active in church activities and served as eucharistic minister. She also enjoyed travel and loved flowers and cats. Her hobbies were photography and crafts. Most of all, she enjoyed walking on the beach at Short Sands.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Philbrick, and her son, Brian Philbrick, both of Cape Neddick; her brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Janet Gordon of Hampton Falls, N.H.; and her sister-in-law, Sue Card of York.

PHILBRICK - Sheila T. Philbrick, 59, of Cape Neddick, Maine, wife of Arthur Philbrick, died April 18, 2002, in York, Maine. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2002, in St. Christopher Church. This would have been her 60th birthday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, NE Division Inc., 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086, or to Hospice of York, Route 1-A, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Alice O. Long

HAMPTON - Alice O. Long, 71, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Pinegrove, La., on May 19, 1930, the daughter of the late Leonidas P. and Eva (Hatcher) Montgomery. She attended local schools in Baton Rouge, where she lived for 34 years.

She moved to Hampton in 1983 and was an active communicant at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a longtime volunteer bookkeeper at the church.

She loved sports, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and reading; she also enjoyed her neighbors and friends.

She was the wife of the late James O. Long, who died in 1993.

In addition to her neighbors and friends, family members include several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Streff of Topeka, Kan., and Laura Fuller of Lowell, Mass.

LONG - Alice O. Long, of Hampton, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford, Mass. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Margaret D. Karnacewicz

GREENLAND - Margaret Dorothy (Cantlin) Karnacewicz, widow of Michael Alexander Karnacewicz, died at her home on April 11, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Born on June 16, 1934, in Keene, she was the daughter of the late Mark Chester and Agnes Johanna (White) Cantlin. She attended schools in Keene and received her bachelor's degree in chemistry at St Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn. Following graduation, she worked for several years as a chemist for U.S. Rubber Company in Naugatuck, Conn., prior to her marriage on July 9, 1960.

She tutored many students in the Seacoast area junior and high schools systems, by whom she is fondly remembered. She was also an accelerated-math teacher at the Greenland Central School. Her interests included league candlepin bowling, car rides, knitting, gardening and spending time at her family's camp on Wilson Pond in East Swanzey during the summer. Both she and her husband were chaperones for the Portsmouth High School Marching Band from 1982 through 1990. As a devout Catholic, her faith was an essential part of her life. She served as a eucharistic minister at St. James Parish in Portsmouth and was a member of the parish's fund-raising committee. She was also very active in the fund-raising efforts of New Hampshire Catholic Charities.

Her charitable work extended beyond the church. She was a board member of the Area Homemaker Health Aide Service in Portsmouth for many years. Her efforts enabled the organization to expand and provide greater assistance to the elderly and homebound in need in the Seacoast area.

Survivors include her children, Micheleen, Mark and his wife, Kathlene, Michael, and Martin and his wife, Jennifer. She is also survived by her paternal aunt, Mary Bouffard of Keene, as well as numerous cousins.

She was predeceased by her son Matthew.

KARNACEWICZ - Margaret D. Karnacewicz, 67, of 2 Fairway Drive, Greenland, died April 11, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2002, at St. James Church, Route 1, Portsmouth. Visiting hours are from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, 500 NE Spanish River Blvd., Suite #14, Boca Raton, FL 33431, www.ovarian.org.

COURNOYER - Martha Cournoyer, 92, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, will conduct services. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 1, Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to a charity of one's choice.

Martha Cournoyer

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Martha Cournoyer, who died April 4, 2002, were held Friday morning at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, conducted services. Alfred LaPoint was organist. Some of Mrs. Cournoyer's favorite hymns were played during the service.

A graveside committal service and burial followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Rev. Wardwell offered committal prayers. Pallbearers were Tom Erickson, Jim Erickson, Bob Watkins, Steve Robbins, Ken Robbins and Ken Foy.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Joan E. Kuhn

LADY LAKE, Fla. - Joan E. Kuhn of 1226 Granada Court, Lady Lake, Fla., died Thursday, April 11, 2002.

Mrs. Kuhn was born in Portsmouth, N.H. She moved to Lady Lake in 1989

Mrs. Kuhn was a homemaker and a member of the Del Mar Ladies Club of The Villages.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

In addition to her husband, Robert K. Kuhn of Lady Lake, she is survived by her son, Gary R. Kuhn of Portsmouth; her daughters, Debra G. Scott of Epping, N.H., Dianna L. Shouse of Portsmouth, and Michele R. Kuhn of Peabody, Mass.; her sister, Eleanor M. Dow of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

KUHN - Joan E. Kuhn of 1226 Granada Court, Lady Lake, Fla., died April 11, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, at Beyers Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Ron L'Huillier officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home at 134 N. Highway 27/441, Lady Lake, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Lake/Sumter County, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Stephen W. Wrobleski

PORTSMOUTH - Stephen W. Wrobleski, 83, of Portsmouth, died at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth on April 11, 2002.

Born in Danvers, Mass., on Aug. 31, 1918, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Struzinski) Wroblewsky. He was married to Stacia A. (Mizioch) Wrobleski for 43 years.

He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, and served with the Army for more than 20 years, retiring in 1965 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. During World War II, he served in the European Theater in the Fourth Army Division, and the Third Army under General George Patton. During the Korean War, he served in the First Calvary Division in 1951-52, and followed with a second tour of duty in Korea in 1963-64. During his military career, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and numerous campaign and battle stars.

A resident of Portsmouth for the past 16 years, he came from Salem, Mass., where he lived for 20 years. He was a member of both St. John The Baptist Church in Salem. and St. James Church in Portsmouth.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Sigmund Wroblewski of Danvers, Mass.; one sister and brother-in-law, Regina and Alexander Kowalski of Salem; four nephews and their spouses, Paul Kowalski of Salem, Phillip (and Susan) Kowalski of Gloucester, Mass., John Kingsley of Windham, N.H., George (and Linda) Kingsley of Danvers; and five grandnephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Theresa Kingsley, and one niece, Barbara (Kingsley) Shough.

WROBLESKI - Stephen W. Wrobleski, 83, of Portsmouth, formerly of Salem, Mass., died on April 11, 2002. His funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, Mass. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Salem, Mass. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours in the funeral home will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem, Mass. Margaret E. Lynch

PORTSMOUTH - Margaret E. (Knox) Lynch, 80, of 3205 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, died Friday morning at Edgewood Center. She was the wife of Henry V. Lynch.

Born in Newburyport, Mass., April 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Leonard L. and Emily M. (Arsenault) Knox, and had attended Newburyport High School.

Mrs. Lynch, who was an office manager and bookkeeper, retired in 1975.

She was a member of the Senior Friends and the Y.W. C.A.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Maureen A. MacDonald, and husband William, of Rowley, Mass., and Holly M. Lynch Pritchard, and husband Alan W., of Newbury, Mass.; two sons, Henry V. Lynch, Jr., and wife Janyce, of Newbury; and Michael D. Lynch, and wife Kathleen, of Merrimac, Mass.; five grandchildren, Scott M. MacDonald and Jill M. Regnier, both of Rowley; Timothy M. Lynch of Bradford, Mass.; Ellen Lynch of Merrimac, and Duston L. Pritchard of Newbury; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Abigail Regnier; one brother, Leonard "Buddy" Knox of Newburyport; two sisters, Dorothy Williamson of Interlachen, Fla. and Lorraine Taylor of Laurinburg, N.C.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Knox.

LYNCH - Margaret E. (Knox) Lynch, 80, of 3205 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, died April, 12, 2002. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Green Street, Newburyport, Mass., followed by interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newburyport. By request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital or to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.

Alice O. Long

HAMPTON - The funeral for Alice O. Long, 71, of Hampton, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the principal celebrant, assisted by the Rev. John B. MacKenzie, associate pastor, the Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, Deacon Paul Testa and the Rev. Richard H. Wegman.

The readings were offered by Marriane Baraclough and Claire St. Martin. The gifts were presented to the altar by Sean and Katie Farrell. Acolytes were George Glenfield, Robert Rancourt and Richard Violet.

Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford, Mass., with committal prayers by Father Ham. Pallbearers were Edward Long, Robert Long, John Farrell, Sean Farrell, James Long and Michael Long.

Kenneth H. Johnson

HAMPTON - Kenneth H. Johnson, 72, of Hampton, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Riverside Nursing Home in Dover.

He was born Dec. 8, 1929, in Everett, Mass., the son of the late Harold E. and Mabel I. (Keithlin) Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was raised in Everett and was a graduate of Everett High School. He attended the University of New Hampshire. He lived in Melrose, Mass., for several years, and lived in Hampton for 25 years, working for the Morrison & Knudsen Construction Co.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He enjoyed working around his home.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Pauline G. (Ericson) Johnson of Hampton; one son, Scott N. Johnson and his wife, Doreen M., of Byfield, Mass.; one daughter, Lynn J. McCarthy and her husband, Bruce E., of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; five grandchildren; three sisters, Harriet Morris of North Hampton, Dorothy Millen of Wolfeboro and Florence Johnson of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON - Kenneth H. Johnson of Hampton died April 12, 2002. Services will be held in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, Monday at 11 a.m.. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 36 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Rose Mary LaMarca

NORTH HAMPTON - Rose Mary LaMarca, 88, of 92 Woodland Road, wife of Louis LaMarca, passed away Friday, April 12, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

LaMARCA - Rose M. LaMarca, 88, of 92 Woodland Road, North Hampton, died April 12, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach on Thursday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at her residence on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Elmer Leigh Jr.

RYE - Elmer Leigh Jr., DMD, 77, widower of E. Katherine (Johnson) Leigh, of 795 Washington Road, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Webster at Rye nursing home.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., on April 13, 1924, the son of Elmer Sr. and Arlene T. (Carroll) Leigh. Dr. Leigh was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, Tufts University and Tufts University Dental School.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Dr. Leigh was a dentist in Fall River, retiring in November 1987 after 40 years.

He was an active participant in civic and professional organizations, including the American Dental Association and Tufts Alumni Association. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Fall River.

Dr. Leigh was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was beloved by his children and grandchildren and was an active participant in their lives.

Survivors include his four children, Katharine E. Leigh of Fort Collins, Colo., Carole A. Hopley and David J. Leigh both of Portsmouth, and Douglas E. Leigh of Somerset, Mass.; three granddaughters, Keleigh K. Tepel and MacKenzie L. Tepel both of Fort Collins, and Megan E. Hopley of Portsmouth; three grandsons, Christopher J. Hopley of Portsmouth, and Bryan D. Leigh and Timothy P. Leigh, both of Somerset; two brothers, Dr. Norman C. Leigh of Braintree, Mass., and Harold J. Leigh of St. Pete Beach, Fla.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Kenneth E. Leigh of York, Maine.

LEIGH - Elmer Leigh Jr., DMD, 77, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, died April 12, 2002. A funeral service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Wednesday at 3 p.m. with visiting hours prior to the service, from 2 to 3 p.m. Friends invited. Committal services will be held at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, R.I., on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Charles F. Vetter Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Charles F. Vetter Sr., former high sheriff, 84, of 11 Woodknoll Drive, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth (Christian Shore) on June 10, 1917, the son of the late Charles F. Vetter II and Beatrice (Gardner) Vetter.

Charles served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from June 17, 1942, to July 19, 1943, as seaman 1st class. He was hired by the Portsmouth Police Department on July 19, 1943, and broke service to enter the United States Army during World War II, where he was attached to the 32nd Division – 128th Infantry.

Discharged as staff sergeant on May 10, 1946, he returned to the Portsmouth Police Department in June 1946. On Jan. 1, 1955, he was promoted to sergeant inspector, and lieutenant inspector on Sept. 3, 1960. He retired July 27, 1968, after 25 years of service.

In 1955, he was elected class president of the FBI National Academy (56th) Session.

From June 5, 1962, to Aug. 21, 1977, he was deputy conservation officer.

On Aug. 12, 1968, he started as a deputy sheriff with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department and was promoted to chief deputy sheriff on Jan. 1, 1973, and elected to high sheriff on Jan. 1, 1980. He retired on Jan. 1, 1986, after 18½ years, totaling 43½ years in law enforcement.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; NH Consistory 32nd degree of Nashua; and Bektash Shrine of Concord. He was a life member of the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association and a member of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion, in Portsmouth.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Hargreaves) Vetter, on Oct. 16, 1981, and his granddaughter Patricia in 1998.

Survivors include his daughter, Sylvia Vetter Lincoln and her husband, Bob, of Eliot, Maine; and two sons, Charles F. Vetter, Jr. and his wife, Jean, of Stratham, and Wayne E. Vetter and his wife, Joan, of Newmarket; a brother, Edward H. Vetter Sr. of Eliot; and a sister, Lora Hersey Lester of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

VETTER - Charles F. Vetter Sr., former high sheriff, 84, of 11 Woodknoll Drive, North Hampton, died April 13, 2002. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with Masonic services by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.
