James M. Succi

PORTSMOUTH - James "Jim" Michael Succi passed away from sudden illness at York Hospital on April 15, 2002. He was born in Portsmouth on Jan. 29, 1946, to Madeline (Columbo) Succi and George Succi. He was a true native of Portsmouth and left town only once, for a tour of duty in the United States Army, serving in Germany as a German linguist for the ASA. He studied philosophy and psychology at the University of New Hampshire when he returned home in 1969.

In 1972 he opened the Pet Emporium and closed the doors 29 years later, in 2001. In addition to the many friends he left behind, his daughter Amber also survives him. His kind and thoughtful presence will be missed by many.

SUCCI - James "Jim" Michael Succi, of Portsmouth, died on April 15, 2002. Friends are invited to share memories of "Jimmy" at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Dolphin Striker. All are welcome. It was important to Jim that he be a bigger part of his daughter's life than he was able to be. And in keeping with that wish, a trust fund for Amber has been set up. Contributions will be accepted on behalf of the "Amber Educational Trust Fund," c/o Morgan Stanley, One Harbor Place, Portsmouth, NH.

Arnold E. McNelly

TOGUS, Maine - Arnold Edward McNelly, 78, formerly of Minot Avenue, Auburn, died Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2002, at the Maine Veterans Home in Togus.

Born in Calais on May 29, 1923, he was the son of Charles and Kathleen Jackson McNelly. He was educated in Calais schools and later served in the Navy during World War II. On Jan. 10, 1944, he married Alice Stevens. She died on April 16, 1992. He worked in local area shoe shops and was a self-employed carpenter until his retirement. He was a member of the Harvest Hill Church of Auburn, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and family activities.

Survivors include three daughters, Priscilla Torella and her husband, Arthur, of Dover, N.H., Patricia Adams and her husband, Richard, of Oxford, and Marcia Seger and her husband, Wayne, of Litchfield; a son, David McNelly and his wife, Monique, of Litchfield; eight grandchildren, Edward McNelly and his wife, Angela, of Poland, Barbara Grass and her husband, Aaron, of Portsmouth, N.H., Marcy Bedford and her husband, Gary, of Leeds, Diana Torella of Dover, N.H., Alison Auger of Lewiston, and Katrina McNelly, Nicole Seger and Jennifer McNelly, all of Litchfield.

He was predeceased by a son, Arnold Jr.

McNELLY - Arnold E. McNelly, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Fortin Group, Turner and Center streets, Auburn, Maine. Donations preferred to Alzeimers Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

Beverly A. Devon

PORTSMOUTH - Beverly A. Devon, 49, of Portsmouth, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

Ms. Devon was born on Oct. 28, 1952, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Paul Seymour and the late Thelma (Estes) Seymour. She resided in Portsmouth for most of her life and graduated from Lynn English High School. She was in the Class of 1970 at Marion Court Secretarial School, and graduated from McIntosh College, where she received an associate's degree, majoring in paralegal studies.

For 10 years, Beverly worked as a secretary for the State of New Hampshire Probation/Parole Department until she was forced to retire due to cancer. She was a board member for SOHO, Save Our Homes Organization, in Portsmouth. She was on the board of the American Little League and enjoyed coaching and managing the team, as well.

In addition to her father of Portsmouth, survivors include two sons, Michael Devon of Dover and Christopher Devon of Portsmouth; a sister, Linda Whitten of Lynn, Mass.; a niece, Rebecca Whitten of Florida; and a nephew, Paul Whitten of Lynn, Mass.

DEVON - Beverly A. Devon, 49, of Portsmouth, died April 16, 2002. A gathering of friends and family will take place at the Community Center of Osprey Landing in Portsmouth at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2002. Merina B. Fontaine

EXETER - Merina B. (Boisvert) Fontaine, 98, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at SunBridge of Exeter where she had lived for five years.

Born Dec. 22, 1903, in Salmon Falls, the daughter of Alexandre and Marie (Parent) Boisvert, she lived in Newmarket for many years before moving to Exeter.

She worked for many years as a fancy stitcher in Royce Shoe Shop, Newmarket.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, Exeter, and was a former communicant of St. Mary's Church in Newmarket. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Hector Benoit, also of Newmarket.

Mrs. Fontaine was a member of the Ladies of St. Ann and RSVP in Exeter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Fontaine, who died in 1980. They were married for 53 years.

Mrs. Fontaine is survived by her son, Armand W. Fontaine of Exeter; her daughter and her husband, Theresa and Rene St. Germain of Methuen, Mass.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by a sister, Julia Dufour; four brothers, Joseph, Gerard, Merrill and Albert; and her grandson Jamie Fontaine, who died in 2001.

FONTAINE - Merina B. (Boisvert) Fontaine, 98, of Exeter, formerly of Newmarket, died April 17, 2002. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, from St. Michael's Church, Lincoln Street, Exeter. Burial will follow in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford. The Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home of Newmarket is in charge of arrangements.

Carol A. Lincoln

NEW CASTLE - The Seacoast lost a lovely lady on Tuesday afternoon with the passing of Carol A. (Gilbert) Lincoln, also of West Dennis, Mass., on Cape Cod. Surrounded by her devoted family she died peacefully after facing with great strength and faith the terminal illness that took her life. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

She was born Oct. 25, 1938, in Plymouth, Mass. During World War II she and her parents resided in Florida and Washington, D.C., before moving back to Natick, Mass. She graduated from high school in Natick, then attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Upon graduation from Bates she entered the Filene's Buyer Training Program where she immediately demonstrated a flair for merchandising and display presentation. She subsequently became a buyer for Filene's in Boston and Bloomingdale's in New York.

Carol then went on to teach retailing at Mount Ida College in Newton before moving to Portsmouth in 1972 when she became director of merchandising for the Guild of Strawbery Banke.

With her official retirement in 1988 she turned her focus to what she is known best for, her charitable volunteerism. Her array of volunteer efforts was extensive. She was active in her church, St. John's Episcopal, The Friends of Odiorne Point and Science Center, Portsmouth Women's College Club, Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, The Warner House, The Guild of Strawbery Banke, the Portsmouth Visiting Nurses Association, the town of New Castle Conservation Committee, Bass River Yacht Club of Cape Cod, and the Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Earlier this year, she was honored by Portsmouth Regional Hospital with the prestigious Frist Volunteer Humanitarian Award. The award recognized her as an outstanding individual who has given boundless time and energy in the effort to help others and promote the betterment of the Seacoast while seeking no personal recognition.

As it was written, "to know Carol is to feel and see energy in motion, always directed at the care and concern of others. A true inspiration."

Carol leaves behind her husband of 20 years, Ralph M. Lincoln, whom she met in New Castle when he bought the house next door. She and her husband enjoyed a great life together. When not residing in New Castle they would relax at their home on Cape Cod. She and her husband loved to sail and race boats.

In addition to her husband, she leaves one son, Charles Cameron Olson and his wife, Christen; three dear grandchildren, Cameron, Catherine and Charlotte; two brothers, Timothy Gilbert and John Gilbert.

LINCOLN - Carol A. (Gilbert) Lincoln, of New Castle and West Dennis, Mass., on Cape Cod, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002. There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a church service in her honor at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made in her memory to the St. John's Episcopal Church, The Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital (for the establish of a nursing scholarship), The Warner House Association, The Friends of Odiorne State Park, or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel.

Charles F. Vetter Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Well attended funeral services for Charles F. Vetter Sr., 84, former High Sheriff of Rockingham County, were held on Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated. An honor guard was formed at the door of the funeral home by representatives from the N.H. Fish and Game Department including Lt. Ricky L. Jones, Sgt. Robert H. Bryant, Conservation Officer David Eskeland, Conservation Officer James Juneau, Conservation Officer Todd E. Szewczyk, and Conservation Officer Daniel A. Brooks.

In attendedance were members of the First Congregational Church in Eliot; the N.H. Fish and Game Department; the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department; St. John's Lodge No.1; St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56; Yorkshire Lodge No. 179; Tucker Lodge No. 99; Morrison Lodge; and Rising Star Lodge.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Vetter's son, Charles F. Vetter Jr.

An honor guard was formed at the funeral home Monday evening by representatives from the N.H. Fish and Game Department including Lt. Ricky L. Jones, Lt. John E. Whitmore, Conservation Officer Daniel A. Brooks, Conservation Officer David Eskeland and representatives from the Rockingham Sheriff's Department including William W. Dawson, Christopher Stone, and Ronald A. Randall.

Masonic services were held on Monday evening at the funeral home by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F. & A.M. including Acting Worshipful Master, Donald L. Stevens, PM; Worshipful Master, Robert L. Suhterland Jr., PM; Treasurer, Edgar Andreson, PM; Senior Warden, Verne Anderson; Secretary, Glen Reid Gordon, PM; Chaplain, A. Kenneth day, PM; George Newton Flanders, PM; William Sawyer, PM; Lennox B. Henderson, PM; Robert Buffum, PM; Donald Redden, PM; Peter Wiggin; Wesley Rowe, PM; Harold Whitehouse; and Charles Beatty. Also assisting in the services were Wor. Bro. Richard Schanda, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of NH; representatives from St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56, including Nelson Hersey, PM; Knute Lundgren, PM; Frank White; representing Rising Star Lodge, Ed Daneault; representing Yorkshire Lodge No. 179 was Scott Vetter; representing Morrison Lodge was William McGowen;and representing Tucker Lodge was Dick Hazelton.

American Legion services were also held Monday evening at the funeral home by Frank E. Booma Post #6 including Chaplain Carl Walton; Commander, Don Poisson; 1st Vice Commander, Smokey Nadeau; Post Adjutant, Richard Brooks; Color Guard, Bernie Lowe; George H. McConnaughey.

Scott W. McDonald

DOVER - Scott William McDonald, 36, of 32 Arrowbrook Road, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer, at his sister's home in Eliot, Maine.

He was born in Exeter on Feb. 23, 1966, and was a graduate of Oyster River High School, Class of 1985. He also attended Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Mass.

He was employed for many years with Weathervane Seafood and most recently Spuds Restaurant in North Hampton. He was a volunteer for Big Brothers / Big Sisters and was previously awarded Big Brother of the year.

He was the beloved son of Betty Baxter McDonald of Dover and John J. McDonald of Hampton, and a brother of Kathleen M. Hebden and her husband, Richard, of Eliot, Maine, John J. McDonald Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Hampton, Peter F. McDonald and his wife, Elizabeth, of North Hampton, and Joseph P. McDonald of Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, all of whom affectionately called him "Uncle Huck."

McDONALD - Scott William McDonald, 36, of 32 Arrowbrook Road, Dover, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Donations may be made in his memory to the Peter Black, M.D., Research Fund, c/o Brigham & Women's Hospital, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115. Scott's family wishes to thank all of the family and friends who have been such a wonderful source of prayer and encouragement to Scott over the past 10 years.

Madeline S. Kirste

RYE - Madeline S. Kirste, 85, of Rye, formerly of Bartlett Street, Manchester, N.H., died April 17, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born in Manchester on Feb. 3, 1917. She was the daughter of Herbert L. and Elizabeth (Baum) Scheer. She was a graduate of Manchester West High School. She resided in Manchester until 1992, when she moved to Rye.

Prior to her retirement she was employed with the Sears-Roebuck Company for 25 years, retiring as divisional manager.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manchester.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold O. Kirste, who died on May 27, 1990.

She is survived by her son, Robert W. Kirste of Rye; her grandson, Scott Kirste of Rye; and several cousins.

KIRSTE - Madeline S. Kirste, 85, of Rye, N.H., formerly of Manchester, N.H., died April 17, 2002. There are no calling hours. The funeral service will be private with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, N.H. Richard E. Reed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Richard E. (Bucky) Reed, 62, of 6022 Loch Arbor Lane, Charlotte, died April 18, 2002, at Carolina's Medical Center.

Bucky is survived by his wife, Cecile; his children, Robin, Rick, Ken, Debby Lou, Sue, and Timothy; ten grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

REED - Richard E. (Bucky) Reed, 62, of 6022 Loch Arbor Lane, Charlotte, N.C., died April 18, 2002. Bucky had requested that no public services be held. Daniel F. Coates

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Daniel F. Coates, 70, died March 17, 2002, after a lengthy battle with heart disease. He lived a long and happy life and spent his final remaining days surrounded by family and friends in Huntington, N.Y.

He was born July 17, 1932, a son of the late James and Margaret Coates. He attended Saugus and Wakefield schools and spent most of his life working as a carpenter and painter. He spent the last five years happily retired in Florida.

He is survived by his son, Steve Coates of Hampton; his two daughters, Sandy Moore and Barbara Carter, both of New York; and six grandchildren, Karen, Sue, Kim, Chris, Justin and Kelly.

Elizabeth Demetral

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth (Zacharias) "Betty" Demetral, 91, widow of Theodore P. Demetral, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of Miller Avenue, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in Portsmouth on June 27, 1910, the daughter of Peter and Angela (Athansoulis) Zacharias.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1927.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth.

She was formerly employed at the former Diamond Match Co.; during World War II she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the administration department, and prior to her retirement in 1981 she was employed for 10 years at the Detroit Police Department as an accountant.

She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, Theodore P. Demetral, whom she married in 1951.

Survivors include a daughter, Marianne D. Smith and her husband, Paul S., of Arlington, Va.; and two grandsons, Jason T. and Colin M. Smith, both of Arlington, Va.

DEMETRAL - Elizabeth (Zacharias) "Betty" Demetral, 91, of 346 Pleasant St. and formerly of Miller Avenue, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with Trisagion (prayer service) at 5:30 p.m., on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Memorial Fund.

Paulette M. Gibely

SEABROOK - Paulette M. Gibely, 54, of 13 Dixon Way, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, April 17, 2002, at her residence.

Survivors include her husband, Aaron "Ron" Gibely of Seabrook; and her daughter, Angela L. Tropiano of Lawrence, Mass.

GIBELY - Paulette M. Gibely, 54, of Seabrook, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the family lot at Central Cemetery, Beverly, Mass. Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home.

Jeremy S. Coleman

SOMERSWORTH - Mr. Jeremy Scott Coleman, 25, of Indigo Hill Road, Somersworth, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Eliot, Maine.

He was born in Portsmouth, March 5, 1977, the son of Rhonda Lee (Plowman) Coleman and the late John Edward Coleman.

He attended Spaulding High School, in Rochester, and was employed by the Heritage Hardwood Floor Co. in Berwick, Maine.

He is survived by his mother Rhonda Quintal and step-father Roland Quintal, of Portsmouth; a daughter Hayley Ann Coleman, of Somersworth; his fiancée Jessica Allard and her son, Casey, of Somersworth; one brother, Jason Coleman of Dover; maternal grandparents, Robert & Emelie Grondin of Farmington; paternal-grandmother, Lee Coleman of Rye; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Edward Coleman.

COLEMAN - Jeremy Scott Coleman, 25, of Indigo Hill Rd., Somersworth, N.H., died April 18, 2002. Funeral services are Monday at 10 a.m. at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours at the Chapel Sunday from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jeremy may be made to the Jeremy Coleman Memorial Fund (for the education of his children) c/o Citizen Bank, 65 Lafayette Rd., North Hampton, NH 03862.

Robert A. DiMambro

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Robert Anthony DiMambro Sr., 73, died March 29, 2002, in San Antonio.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1919 in Cassino, Italy, to the late Luigi and Teresa DiMambro.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps, and retired from Civil Service.

Mr. DiMambro was an active member of the community, involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Lions International, and numerous activities within his church Mission San Jose.

In addition to his wife, Florence, he is survived by his daughters, Lisa Schneider and husband Floyd, Pamela Preece and husband Daniel Jr.; his sons, Robert DiMambro Jr. and his wife Jean, and Brian DiMambro and wife Vicki; granddaughters, Trisa Richard, Katherine DiMambro, Shana Furbaugh, and Jillian DiMambro; grandsons, Christian Schneider and Andrew DiMambro; great-granddaughter, Madeline Richard; his sister, Genoveffa Lambert and Mary Pulire; his brothers Vincenzo and Rudolph; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Agostino and Marino and grandson, Ryan Briggs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lions Crippled Children's Camp in care of Lion Dick Alphin at (210) 945-4919.
