Beverly Julia Greene

YORK, Maine - Beverly Julia Greene, 79, of York Street, and formerly of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born in Westfield, Mass., on Jan. 1, 1923, daughter of Ralph and Ruth (Aldrich) Bill.

She moved here three years ago from Lawrenceville, Ga., to be closer to her daughter. She and her husband had lived in Myrtle Beach for 20 years before moving to Lawrenceville in 1994.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in York. She was a lover of music and an accomplished piano player and was the designated piano player at many senior citizens activities.

Every morning, she started her day by doing a crossword puzzle. Besides being a whiz at crossword and jigsaw puzzles, she loved playing cards.

Her love and devotion to her family will always be a cherished memory.

She was predeceased by her husband, J. Edward Greene, who died in 1995; and by her brother, Ralph Bill.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith and her husband Richard Helsher of York; two sons, Philip and his wife Mary Ellen Greene of Lilburn, Ga., and Brian and his wife Carla Greene of Lilburn, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Kristin Helsher, Karen Helsher, Erik Helsher, Robert Greene, Tara Faircloth, Blythe Crissman and Ashley Greene; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica Helsher, Jakob Helsher and Joshua Faircloth.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home of York.

Anna A. Hein

WILMINGTON, Mass. - The funeral for Anna A. Hein, 90, of Wilmington, formerly of 277 Water St., Exeter, N.H., was held Friday in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. The Rev. Carroll Moore officiated. Jean Goss was the organist. Burial was in the Airmont Lutheran Cemetery, Suffern, N.Y.

Ralph B. Emery

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Ralph B. Emery Jr., 80, of South Berwick, died Friday morning at the York Hospital in York, Maine.

Mr. Emery was born on March 25, 2002, in Springvale, Maine. He was the son of Ralph Sr. and Edith Stubbs Emery.

He attended Springvale schools, as well as the Wood School of Longhorn, Pennsylvania, until the age of 16.

When in good health, Mr. Emery was an active member of the North Parish Congregational Church of Sanford, where he played the organ and various other instruments for many years.

Mr. Emery is survived by a brother, John Emery of Barrington, N.H.; and a sister, Faith Emery of South Berwick.

EMERY - Ralph B. Emery Jr., 80, of South Berwick, Maine, died April 26, 2002. Anthony G. Gekas

FRANKLIN - Anthony "Tony" G. Gekas, 85, of 121 South Main St., died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Franklin Regional Hospital following a short illness.

He was born in Somersworth, N.H., Dec. 14, 1916, the son of George and Sophia (Angelicas) Gekas. Tony spent his youth in Portsmouth and was a 1934 graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery, Maine.

He lived in Portsmouth until moving to Tilton, N.H. in 1955, spending 22 years there. He later moved to Penacook where he resided for over 22 years, before moving back to Franklin three years ago. He had worked as a welder with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than 15 years, prior to serving his country and later returning to his work. For many years he was employed in real estate and insurance with the former Lou Carignan Agency in Tilton, later employed with Prudential Life Insurance Company in Laconia as Staff Manager. He and his wife owned and operated Anthony's House of Pizza in Tilton and Plymouth for many years.

He was a life member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, BPOW #1280 and VFW Post #1698 in Franklin. Tony was a Army veteran of WW II, serving as T-Fifth Grade with the 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division in the Italian campaign.

He attended the Greek Orthodox Transfiguration Church in Franklin, and was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels in Laconia. Tony was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. While owner of the pizza house, he was known for the many kindnesses shown to the area youth. A gentle, kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Tony was known for his appetite for dog racing, and although he did not play, he was a great golf enthusiast and follower of the sport. His sense of humor will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene C. (Hulares) Gekas of Franklin; a son, George A. Gekas of Bass Harbor, Maine; two daughters, Roxanne S. Vogel of Charleston, S.C., and Stephanie Storey of Tilton; three grandchildren, Adrienne Vogel-Hill of Atlanta, Ga., Leah Storey of Laconia, Ethan Storey of Tilton; two great-grandchildren, Ivy Storey of Tilton and Andre Storey-Cormier of Laconia; three sisters, Mary Kyrios and Esther Karayianis both of New Castle, and Gari Franklin of Cincinnati, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

GEKAS - Anthony "Tony" G. Gekas, 85, of 121 South Main St., in Franklin, N.H., died April 26, 2002. According to Tony's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, 811 North Main St., in Laconia. Father Anastasios Coulouras will officiate. Burial will be in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H., where committal prayers and honors will be held. The William F. Smart Sr., Memorial Home, of Tilton is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be made to either, Neighbor to Neighbor, 406 Central St., Franklin, NH 03235, or to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, 811 North Main St., Laconia, NH 03246.

GREENE - Beverly J. Greene of York Street, died April 25, 2002, at York Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Elizabeth J. Wilusz

MANCHESTER - Elizabeth J. "Betty" (Cameron) Wilusz, 68, of Manchester died April 26, 2002 at a local hospital.

She was born June 27, 1933 in Concord, the daughter of Harry and Hedwig (Rzasa) Cameron, and had lived in Manchester for many years. Mrs. Wilusz was a well respected educator in the Manchester School System, having taught kindergarten for almost thirty years including nearly twenty-five years at the Parker Varney School.

She was a graduate of Manchester Central High School and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire. "Betty" had an enthusiastic love for life and enjoyed spending summers with her family, especially her husband, at Wells Beach, Maine. Mrs. Wilusz was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Members of her family include her husband of 44 years, John Wilusz, of Manchester; two sons, Wayne and his wife, Wendy, of Hampton, and Glenn and his wife, Joanne, of North Hampton; and five grandchildren, Alexis, Taylor, John, Lauren and Max.

WILUSZ - Elizabeth J. "Betty" (Cameron) Wilusz, 68, of Manchester, died on April 26, 2002. Calling hours will be held at the Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., at the corner of Harrison Street, Manchester, on Monday from 3 to 5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, corner of Lowell and Pine streets, Manchester. The Reverend Charles Blauvelt, rector, will officiate. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Goffstown.

Valea I. McGlone

DOVER - Valea I. McGlone, 95, of Niles Drive, Dover, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born Feb. 28, 1907 in Somersworth, she was the daughter of the late Arsen and Matilda (Nadeau) Demers.

She worked as a production worker for Davidson Rubber in Dover.

She enjoyed playing cards and was a senior regent in the Loyal Order of Moose. She also belonged to the American Legion and VFW.

She was widowed by her husband, Albert E. McGlone, in 1966. She is survived by one son, Hubert J. McGlone, of Barrington, two daughters; Edna Henson, of Portsmouth, and Jacqueline Forshay, of South Berwick, Maine; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by two sons; Edward A. and Ronald R. McGlone; one daughter, Patricia Cantin, and some brothers and sisters.

MCGLONE - Valea I. McGlone, 95, of Niles Drive, Dover, died April 27, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass-Hospital after a period of failing health. Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave, Dover. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 30 at St. Charles Church, Dover. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Dover.

Vincent J. Tise

SEABROOK - Vincent J. Tise, 81, of 24 Batchelder Road, died on April 27, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital

He was born on Oct. 30, 1920, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late Louis and Jennie (Cutroni) Tise. He had lived most of his life in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, always close to his family. He was a graduate of Rindge High School in Cambridge, Mass.

Mr. Tise was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Suffolk and the USS Yancey.

He is survived by his children, Stephen Tise of Abington, Mass, and Ronald and Jocelyn (Nielacny) Tise of Kensington, N.H.; his grandchildren, Francesca Tise and Liam Walsh of Providence, R.I., Cesare Tise and Olivia Geer of Biddeford, Maine, Gabriele and Alexis Tise of Kensington; his great-grandchildren, Isabella and Clio Walsh, and Celia Tise; his brother, Carmelo "Buddy" Tise of Weymouth, Mass.; his sister, Madeline Faiella of Braintree, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

TISE - Vincent J. Tise, 81, of 24 Batchelder Road, Seabrook, died April 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach, at 10 a.m., Wednesday. Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. His burial will follow on Thursday morning in the Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass. Kathryn Paige

PORTSMOUTH - Kathryn (Scannell) Paige, 95, died April 27, 2002 at the Edgewood Nursing Home.

Born in Methuen, Mass., Nov. 4, 1906, she was the daughter of John and Martha (Keogh) Paige. She graduated from Lowell Normal School and received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Boston University. She also received her CAGS (Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study).

Mrs. Paige taught school in Westwood and Dedham, Mass. She then went to the Norwood School System and taught elementary school, junior high school, and was a reading specialist. She also was the high school guidance counselor for many years retiring in that position.

She lived in Westwood, for more than 50 years and was a summer resident of Blodgett's Landing, Newbury, N.H. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, New London, N.H. She was a member of the Guidance Counselor Association, the Norwood Teacher's Association, and the National Education Association.

Her husband, Norman Paige, died in 1949.

Survivors include a son, Peter Paige of Newbury; two daughters, Carolyn Chick and Linda Henry, both of York, Maine; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Scannell, and Genevieve Scannell, both of Dunedin, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

PAIGE - Kathryn (Scannell) Paige, 95, died April 27, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline, Mass. Robert M. Fenner

EXETER - Robert M. Fenner, of 17 Hampton Road, died on April 19, 2002.

Mr. Fenner was born in St. Louis, Mo., to Isabel (Johnson) Fenner and Lynne Burton Fenner. He lived in St. Louis, Mo. and Columbus, Ohio, and later in Evanston, Ill.

He enjoyed school, scouting and camping throughout Wisconsin and lower Canada. He endured the Depression with the help of his mother Isabel.

He graduated from Evanston High School and entered the University of Colorado where he graduated with a bachelor's degree. Here he was a respected member of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and drew inspiration from the foothills of the nearby Rocky Mountains.

He entered Officer's Candidate School in the Navy and earned his commission. He patrolled the Caribbean as commanding officer of P.C. 567, a sub-chaser, during World War II. It was during this time that he developed his love of the sea and boating, a love that would stay with him throughout his life. He received an honorable discharge at the rank of lieutenant.

Following his naval service, he entered Harvard University where he earned a master's degree in Business Administration. Shortly thereafter, he met his wife, Patricia Metcalfe, with whom he helped found "Parents with a Purpose" in New York, that developed into "The March of Dimes." He and his family moved to New Canaan, Conn. The family attended St. Mark's Church. His interviewing, marketing and sales skills, as well as his interest in business development, attracted him to well-known employers such as Colgate Palmolive, and Chesebrough-Ponds.

Although Mr. Fenner was oftentimes a very gregarious and outgoing figure, he could be a very concerned and stern father figure. He was intent upon giving his children something he himself did not have as a child, a father. The Fenner family enjoyed many wonderful years in New Canaan. Later in his career, he returned to his live of the sea and boating. He managed Cedar Island Marina in Clinton, Conn. where his sons joined him as dock boys during the summer months. During these years, the family enjoyed their own sailboat which allowed for numerous family adventures. His most recent achievement was the development and operation of the marina at the Greenwich Harbor Inn in Greenwich, Conn. and as an executive interviewer for Yankelovich Partners, a well-known polling firm.

Mr. Fenner is survived by his daughter, Robin Corwith of Watermill, N.Y.; three sons, Peter of Atlanta, Ga., Clarke of Rye, N.H., and Garry of Bethlehem, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

FENNER - Robert M. Fenner, 80, of 17 Hampton Road, Exeter, died April, 19, 2002. There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m., Friday, at St. Mark's Church in New Canaan, Conn. with interment to follow at the church columbarium. Louise D. Bettencourt

PORTSMOUTH - Louise D. Bettencourt, 77, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born in Somerville, Mass., Nov. 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Anthony and Catherine (Cain) Rathgeb and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 28 years.

Before her retirement she was employed as a billing administrator with Portsmouth Hospital. She was an active member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and was an instructor with the church CCD Program. The widow of Arthur G. Bettencourt, she is survived by her sons; Mark Bettencourt and his wife, Lori, of Greenland and Paul Bettencourt and his wife, Karen, of Virginia; and six grandchildren, Josh, Colin, Kathleen, Ricky, James and Tammy.

BETTENCOURT - Louise D. Bettencourt, 77, of Portsmouth, died April 27, 2002. A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Robert L. Shaw

DOVER - Robert L. Shaw, 65, of 6 Chesley St., died Monday, April 29, 2002, at his home after a period of failing health.

Born in Portsmouth on Jan. 1, 1937, a son of Edward C. and Daisy (Dowey) Shaw, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and had lived in the Dover-Portsmouth area all of his lifetime.

Prior to his retirement, he had been a tractor-trailer truck driver with United Parcel Service for more than 33 years. He had worked part-time for Advanced Systems Inc. (Measured Progress) of Dover. He also held a black belt in karate.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Roux) Shaw, whom he married 40 years ago this August; two daughters and their husbands, Beth and Paul Eaton of Strafford, and Christine and Michael Wirtanen of Brentwood; his father, Edward Shaw of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Nicholas Wirtanen, Devin Eaton, Hannah Eaton and Robert Wirtanen; a brother, Thomas Shaw of Portsmouth; and nieces and nephews.

SHAW- Robert L. Shaw, 65, of Dover, died April 29, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call for one hour prior to the funeral, from

Geraldine "Jerry" Maher

GREENLAND - Geraldine "Jerry" Maher, 70, of 348 Portsmouth Ave., died at her home on Saturday, April 27, 2002.

Born in Portsmouth on Nov. 30, 1931, she was a daughter of Paul and Agostina (Maestri) Paganelli and had been a lifelong resident of Portsmouth before moving to Greenland six years ago. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1949.

She was a member of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Leon A. Maher; a daughter, Joanne Maher and her husband, Brian Wagner, of Hartford, Wis.; two sons, Michael Maher and his wife, Rhonda, of Indian Head, Md., and Bernard Maher and his wife, Karen, of Bellingham, Mass.; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Florence Capalare, Mary Perron and Carol Tuley, all of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Pauline, Joanne and Dorothy.

MAHER - Geraldine "Jerry" Maher, 70, of 348 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, died Saturday, April 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. James Church, Portsmouth. Visiting hours are from

Joseph E. McKay

Kittery, Maine - Joseph (Mickey) Ernest McKay, 78, of 28 Bridge St., died April 29, 2002, at his home, after a brave battle against cancer.

Born in Edgecomb on June 8, 1923, he was a son of Ernest and Pearl McKay. He attended local schools, after which he served his country in the United States Army Air Force and landed in Normandy, France, on his birthday, which was two days after D-day.

He moved to Kittery in 1950 to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he was a shipfitter in Shop 11 for 30 years until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. His primary focus in life was his family, his garden and his dogs. He was constantly helping all his children with projects around their homes and running errands for them.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Nellie (Dunlap) McKay; his seven children, Carol Sue Grover of Kittery, Judith Ashmore of Fredericksberg, Va., and Kittery, Joanne McKay of Kittery, Joseph McKay Jr. of Auburn, Robert McKay of Kittery, Reginald McKay of Kittery, and Stephen McKay and his wife, Sue, of Cape Neddick; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters Olive Wright of Pemequid Point and Edith Lewis of Trevett; and brothers Thomas McKay of Pemequid Point and Alfred McKay of Edgecomb.

He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Blake of Edgecomb.

McKAY - Joseph Ernest (Mickey) McKay, 78, of Bridge Street in Kittery, Maine, died April 29, 2002, at his home. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Margaret T. LeFler

BERWICK, Maine - Margaret T. "Margo" LeFler, 57, a resident of Bell Street, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., after a brief illness. She was the widow of William E. LeFler, who died in 1995.

She was born on March 12, 1945, in Rochester, N.H., a daughter of Robert J. and Noella LaPierre Goupil, and is a graduate of the former Berwick High School.

She was employed for the last five years with Therma-Pool in Somersworth, N.H., as an assembler and inspector. She had just been awarded Employee of the Month by her employer.

She is a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Berwick and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Berwick VFW. She enjoyed fishing, whale-watching, gardening and animals.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela March, of New Durham N.H.; two brothers, Robert J. Goupil of Topeka, Kan., and Richard J. Goupil of Somersworth, N.H.; two sisters, Mari-Anne Theriault of Garland, Texas, and Henrietta Goupil of Berwick; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

LeFLER - Margaret T. "Margo" LeFler, 57, of Berwick, Maine, died Sunday, April 28, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Laing Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of Peace, Berwick Road, Berwick, with the Rev. Hilary Cameron officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
