Philip F. Adams

YORK, Maine - Philip F. Adams, 64, of 650 Route 1, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1937, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was a son of Philip H. "Bing" and Mary (O'Brien) Adams of Hartley Farm Road in Kittery. He was the oldest of 14 children.

He was an adventurer of life who loved to fly in his Lake Amphibian aircraft and loved to be with his wife and family at his camp in the central Maine woods, over the mountain from Moosehead. He always looked on the brighter side of life with enthusiasm and for the possibilities that would lie ahead.

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed going fishing with them. Among his adventures were fishing in Labrador and Florida and traveling to see his children in California, Florida and Nevada. He was a square-dance caller for 38 years and was known to many as "Maine's Singing Caller." Everything he did was done with a zest for life.

From 1965 to 1986 he owned and operated the Adams Accounting Firm in Portsmouth, N.H. In 1986, along with his brothers Gary and Kim and nephew Kevin, he purchased the Kittery Trading Post from their younger brother, Kevin O. Adams. After retiring in 1998, he and his wife traveled and thoroughly enjoyed life.

He was predeceased by his father, Philip H. Adams, and by two brothers, Francis and Kevin Adams.

Survivors include his loving and caring wife of 30 years, Elaine Rose (Theriault) Adams of York; his mother, Mary F. Adams of Kittery; six daughters, Gina Adams and her two sons, Chad and Beau Carson of York, Nancy and her husband, Matt Rovnak, and their two daughters, Abigail and Amanda, of South Berwick, Teresa and David Lever of North Carolina, Misty and Brian Ellis of Sarasota, Fla., Laurie and Kevin Evans and their two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie Hamel, of Nevada, and Terri Wheeler of Nevada; two sons, Phil and Sandy Adams and their two children, Samantha and Clay, of Nevada, and Paul and Kathy Adams and their two children, Krista and John, of Nevada; and siblings Gary T. Adams of Kittery and Punta Gorda, Fla., Carol Loring of Orlando, Fla., Sherry Hollingsworth of Lake Wales, Fla., Mary Catalino of York, Janice Grogan of Eliot, Lisa Adams of Mexico City, Mexico, Mark Adams of South Berwick, Chris Adams of Kittery, Kim Adams of Kittery, Maureen Hutchinson of Miami, Fla., and Steve Adams of Gorham, Maine.

ADAMS - Philip F. Adams of U.S. Route 1, York, Maine, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at York Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, New England Chapter, 495 Old Conn. Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701.

Anne M. Caouette

PORTLAND, Maine - Anne Marie Caouette, 36, of Sherman Street, formerly of Eliot and South Berwick, died suddenly at her home on May 3, 2002.

Born on March 30, 1966, in Portsmouth, N.H., she was a daughter of Douglass B. and Mary-Lou (Barrett) Bunker. She attended local schools, including Marshwood High School in Eliot until her junior year when she transferred to and graduated from Sanford High School.

She had worked in the hospitality field for a number of years. She was employed by Friar's Fish in Eliot for a period of time and most recently as a trainer for Denny's in Portland.

She is survived by her children, daughter Sarah Caouette of Kittery and daughters Aprille and Autumn; her father, Douglass B. Bunker and his fiancée, Rosalie Fronczak, of Kittery; a brother, Robert Bunker of Eliot; a sister, Amy Bunker of Dover, N.H.; her grandmother Mary Barrett-Kelly of Port Richie, Fla., and Hampton, N.H.; and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, Mary-Lou Bunker.

CAOUETTE - Anne Marie Caouette, 36, of 71 Sherman St., Portland, Maine, formerly of Eliot and South Berwick, Maine, died suddenly at her home on Friday, May 3, 2002. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2002, from St. Raphael's Parish in Kittery, with burial to follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Vincent J. Tise

SEABROOK - Funeral services for Vincent J. Tise, 81, of 24 Batchelder Road, who died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Exeter Hospital, were held Wednesday morning, May 1, 2002, from the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, in Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach, by the Rev. Maurice D. Lavigne; the acolyte was Salvatore DeVincenzo; the organist was Marjorie Scully; and the soloist was James White. The funeral pall was placed on Mr. Tise's casket by his granddaughters Gabriele and Alexis Tise. The first reading was given by granddaughter Francesca Tise, and the second reading was given by Liam Walsh. The eucharistic gifts were brought to the altar by Mr. Tise's niece Denise Tise and his cousin Roseanne Cutroni. Following communion, grandson Cesare Tise read the poem "Come to Me" and delivered the eulogy.

A mercy meal followed the funeral ceremony at the Granite Room, Seabrook Greyhound Park.

Burial followed on Thursday morning, May 2, 2002, at the VA National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass., with Monsignor John Reagen conducting the committal prayers. The American flag that draped Mr. Tise's casket was presented to his son Stephen V. Tise following committal services. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton.

Dr. John E. Dee

HOLDEN, Mass. - Dr. John E. Dee, 94, of 85 Wyndhurst Drive, died Friday, May 3, 2002, in the Coes Pond Hospice Residence, Worcester, Mass.

He was born in Brockton, Mass., and lived in Worcester for 56 years before moving to Holden in 1996.

He graduated from Brockton High School and Williston Academy. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He received his medical degree from Harvard University Medical School.

He was a major in the Medical Corps of the Army Air Corps during World War II and served in the European Theater.

He had a private practice in internal medicine and cardiology in Worcester for 31 years. In 1977, he was appointed director of medical services at Fairlawn Hospital in Worcester.

He served on the Physicians Council of the Mass. Hospital Association and was a president of the Worcester Chapter of the American Heart Association and a vice president of the Mass. Heart Association.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Mary H. (O'Connell) Dee, who died April 17, 1993.

He leaves two daughters, Martha M. Dee of Kittery, Maine, and Janet Dee Mathieu of Holden; and four grandchildren.

DEE - Dr. John E. Dee, 94, of Holden, Mass., died May 3, 2002. The funeral will be Wednesday, May 8, 2002, from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, Mass., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial donations to V.N.A. Hospice of Central Mass., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

V. Constance Estey

LACONIA - V. Constance Estey, 81, of 123 Dartmouth St., died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the Hillsboro County Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

Born in Kittery, Maine, on Oct. 26, 1920, she was the daughter of Haven T. and Mary (Bray) Fernald. She graduated from Traip Academy, in Kittery, Maine, with the Class of 1937, at the age of 16.

She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in industrial relations. She followed this with employment at the former Pease Air Force Base and at RAF Lakin Heath in the United Kingdom and retired in 1983 from the U.S. Army Garrison, Arlington Hall Station, in Arlington, Va., as chief of the Management-Employee Relations Branch. In recognition of her service to the Department of the Army, she received the Commanders Award for civilian service.

She was predeceased by her husband, Quentin R. Estey Sr., in February of 1992.

She leaves behind three sons, Michael Q. Estey of Laconia, William H. Estey of Manchester, and Quentin R. Estey Jr. of Peterborough; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ESTEY - V. Constance Estey, 81, of Laconia, died Sunday, May 5, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Benjamin Karpman

PORTSMOUTH - Benjamin Karpman died peacefully on May 6, 2002. He was 88 years old.

Born in Minsk, Russia, in 1913, he had been a longtime resident of Hartford, Conn.

He was active in the Lupus Foundation, where he was treasurer for many years. He worked for the Prudential Insurance Company for more than 30 years, and won many awards for outstanding achievements.

An accomplished singer, he sang in various synagogues, choirs and vocal groups from the age of 6 until well after retirement. The last several years he lived at the Mark Wentworth home in Portsmouth, where he regularly entertained and cheered the other residents and staff with his singing. He was also an avid golfer, having made three holes-in-one in various golf courses.

Predeceased by Ida, his wife of 49 years, he leaves two children, Lorrie Grossman of Portsmouth and Andy Karpman of Hampton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A kind and gentle person, he was totally devoted to his wife and children.

KARPMAN - Benjamin Karpman, 88, of Portsmouth, died May 6, 2002. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Weinstein's Mortuary in West Hartford, Conn. Burial will be in East Windsor, Conn. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, and Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the home of Andy Karpman, 3 Dupuis Circle, Hampton. A memorial service will be held at Temple Israel in Portsmouth at a later date.

Timothy F. Murphy

EXETER - Timothy F. Murphy, 54, of 2 Thelma Drive, died May 7, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1947, in Berlin, a son of the late Edward J. and Roseann (Lavertue) Murphy.

He was raised in Berlin and was a graduate of Berlin High School and the New Hampshire Vocational Technical College in Berlin. He also attended Tri County Technical College in Seneca, S.C. He moved to Exeter in 1979.

He worked for Seabrook Station in the engineering department for 23 years.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Family members include his wife of 34 years, Mary Ellen Murphy of Exeter; two daughters, Rosemary E. Bergeron of Litchfield, and Patricia R. Murphy of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren, Brandon and Tyler Moreau of Raymond; one brother, James E. Murphy of Hebron, Conn.; two sisters, Sally M. Tourangeau of Berlin, and Kathleen M. Murphy of Venice, Fla.; two sons-in-law, Derek Moreau of Raymond, and Chris Bergeron of Litchfield; two nephews; and many nieces.

He was predeceased by his daughter Shannon K. Moreau.

MURPHY - Timothy F. Murphy, 54, of 2 Thelma Drive, Exeter, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Exeter Congregational Church, 21 Front St., Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

David L. Ramsey

KITTERY, Maine - David L. Ramsey, 60, of Main Street, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Norfolk, Va., the son of Ernest and Blanche Ramsey, and was educated there. He served in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years' service.

On Oct. 16, 1965, he married Ruth Mello at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, Mass.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and then at Rochester Center Arms in Rochester. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Ruth Ramsey of Kittery; and one son, Michael Ramsey of Irvine, Calif.

RAMSEY - David L. Ramsey, 60, of Kittery, Maine, died Monday, May 6, 2002. Visiting hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday at Hope Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Biddeford. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

Martha A. Smith

ELIOT, Maine - Martha Atwood Smith, 62, of 100 Beech Road, died May 7, 2002, at her home.

Born on May 6, 1940, in Arlington, Mass., she was the daughter of Lester N. and Ruby A. (Garnier) Hayden and attended local schools, graduating from Arlington High School with the Class of 1957.

She was married in 1966 to her husband, James Smith, and they made their home in Chelmsford, Mass. In 1990 they built a home in Eliot and made the Seacoast their home.

She was employed for many years as an administrative assistant at the United Methodist Church in York. She was an avid crafter.

She is survived by her husband, James Smith of Eliot; and a brother, William Hayden of Alabama.

SMITH - Martha A. Smith, 62, of 100 Beech Road, Eliot, Maine, died May 7, 2002, at her home. Arrangements will be announced at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to the Make A Wish Foundation International, 3550 N. Central Ave., Suite 300, Phoenix, AZ 85012. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904.

James L. Streeter

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for James L. Streeter, of 168 Highland St., were held on Tuesday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Edward J. Kelley, pastor, officiated. Acolytes were Meg Foley, Meaghan Dwyer, Richard Curry and Mike Woods. Placement of the pall was done by Patty Smith and Peggy Franceschini. The crucifix was placed on the casket by Mrs. Eleanor (Kelly) Streeter. Readings were offered by Eileen Adams and Joyce Miller. The Presentation of the Gifts was done by Nellie and John Leaming, and words of remembrance were given by Tony Streeter.

In attendance were communicants of the church and former associates from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Kelley.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Streeter's widow, Eleanor (Kelly) Streeter, by the Rev. Kelley, national president of the Military Chaplains Association.

Bearers were James A. Streeter, Allen Smith, Paul G. Franceschini, Robert A. Hines, Jeffrey G. Adams and James A. Smith.

Wake services were held Monday evening at the funeral home by Gayl Callis, pastoral minister for the Immaculate Conception Church.

Laura Elnora Brewer

ELIOT, Maine - A Mass of Christian Burial for Laura Elnora Brewer, who died on May 2, 2002, was held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H.

A well-attended service was officiated by the Rev. John Jackson, vicar of the church. In attendance were her family, friends and coworkers, as well as many of her clients and close friends from Tri Angle Inc. in Malden, Mass., as well as former co-workers and clients from Great Bay Services in Newington, N.H. A private burial was conducted on Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot. Arrangements were entrusted to the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Lillabel Cummings

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service for Lillabel Cummings, who died May 2, 2002, at the Harbor Home in York, was held Tuesday at the Eliot Congregational Church. The Rev. David Avery, pastor, conducted the service. Emily Haggerty was organist; soloist was Brenda LaForce; usher was Ruth Vetter; and a very moving eulogy was given by Thomas Kennedy, a good friend of the family. In attendance were members of the nursing staff at Harbor Home, Order of the Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department and Girl Scouts.

The Eastern Star held a service Monday evening at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. Those who participated were Priscilla deRochemont, Worthy Matron; Orville deRochemont, Worthy Patron; Mary Zimmerman, Chaplain; Thelma Hutchins, Adah; Barbara Fernald, Ruth; Sharon Nye, Esther; Heidi Porter, Martha; and Kera Ashline, Electra.

A graveside committal service and burial took place Wednesday at Upper Gloucester Cemetery in New Gloucester, Maine. The Rev. Avery conducted the committal service. Bearers were Mike Burridge, Jack Burridge, Arthur Mason, Adam Mason, Eric Cummings and Frank Balonis.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Marie-Louise Knopp

PORTSMOUTH - A funeral for Marie-Louise Knopp was held on Saturday, May 4, 2002, from St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Timothy T. Rich and the Rev. Ann W. Stevenson officiating.

The service, which included fond words of remembrance by her children, was attended by many of her church family and friends, not only from the Seacoast area but also from her church in Greenwich, Conn.

The Rev. Timothy Rich offered prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. Readings were also offered by her friends and family. The Rev. Rich offered a homily and the Commendation. The congregation was led in many of her favorite hymns by organist Terrie Harmon; the crucifier was Ted Blood; and ushers were Al and Ginny Edwards, Ron Moore and Denise Tibedo.

A gathering of family and friends was held following the service in the church parish hall.

Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
