Phyllis M. E. Nickulas

EXETER - Mrs. Phyllis M. E. (Blomquist) Nickulas, 86, widow of John A. Nickulas, of Exeter, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Dannebrog, Neb., on April 25, 1916, the daughter of the late Isaac P. and Emily Marguerite Josephine (Olson) Blomquist. Mrs. Nickulas was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1934; the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in Lynn, Mass.; and had attended Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts.

She served in the United States Army Nurses Corps during World War II in France.

Mrs. Nickulas retired in 1980 from the Portsmouth Hospital as a registered nurse. She also worked at the Lynn Union in Massachusetts.

She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church; the Women's Alliance of the church; the Harmony Club; and the Lynn Hospital Alumni Association.

Survivors include two sons, John M. Nickulas of Oakland, Calif., and David W. Nickulas of Auburn; a daughter, Marjorie Brennan of Sandown; nine grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; two brothers, Rayfield W. Blomquist of Portsmouth and John E. Blomquist of Wolfeboro; a sister, Marjorie Bond of Candia; and several nieces and nephews.

NICKULAS - Phyllis M. E. (Blomquist) Nickulas, 86, of Exeter, died May 11, 2002. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Family flowers only.

Alice E. Seaward

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Alice E. (Moody) Seaward, 75, of 4 Pocahontas Road, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born in Franklin, N.H., July 6, 1926, the daughter of the late Frederick G. and Elsie Mabel (Wilson) Moody, and attended Franklin schools.

Mrs. Seaward studied nursing at Maine General Hospital. She married William W. Seaward Jr. in 1948. She held positions in the League of Women Voters and was an early proponent of women's issues. She enjoyed square dancing, boating, and outdoor activities, including skating, skiing and hiking. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Portsmouth, N.H. In all her activities, Mrs. Seaward was well known for her high spirit and commitment. She was a strong advocate of higher education and open thinking and challenged her children to make strong contributions.

She is survived by four children, William w. Seaward III of Lexington, Mass., Karen L. Seaward of Palo Alto, Ca., Donna L. Seaward of Northampton, Mass., and Brian L. Seaward of Naples, Fla.; three grandchildren, David and Rachel Seaward of Lexington, Mass., and Angel Huntington of Ca.; her brother, Dr. Frank Moody of Salt Lake City, Utah; and five nieces and two nephews.

SEAWARD - Alice E. (Moody) Seaward, 75, of 4 Pocahontas Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died Saturday, May 11, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church), 292 State Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. No visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to York Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

John A. McDermott

PORTSMOUTH - John A. "Jack" McDermott, 77, a former resident of Lowell, Mass. for more than 50 years and a resident of Portsmouth for several years, died Friday, at his home.

Born in Lowell, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Grady) McDermott and was educated in Lowell schools. Mr. McDermott was a 1942 graduate of Lowell High School.

During World War II, he served with the Marine Corps, 4th Division. He worked for General Electric in Lynn for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eileen (Sheehan) McDermott of Portsmouth; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John McDermott of Litchfield, N.H., David and his wife, Annette, McDermott, of Texas, and James McDermott of Portsmouth; a daughter, Mary Beth McDermott of Lowell; three grandchildren, Colin and Nathan McDermott, of Texas, and Ryan McDermott of Lowell; a brother, Gerald McDermott of Lowell; two sisters, Marilyn Keenan of Tyngsboro and Barbara Ahearn of Lowell; close friends, Chuck Cassidy and Tom Furey and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jim McDermott.

Private funeral services were held in Portsmouth. Donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Sheila A. Blanchette

SEABROOK - Sheila A. Blanchette, 54, of 10 Farm Lane, and Louisville, KY, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

She was born in Amesbury, Mass., on March 21, 1948, daughter of the late Gerald J. and Carlene F. (Carter) Perusse. Raised in Amesbury and Seabrook, she was a 1964 graduate of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton.

She traveled for many years with her husband in the military and for the past 23 years worked for the Army and Air Force Base Exchange Service, managing several of the military department stores at various bases.

Earlier she had worked for her parents at Perusse's Variety Store in Seabrook and for the old Seabrook Post Office, which operated in a store in the Smithtown section of town.

She was active with the American Legion Auxiliary while living in Germany and was active in Scouting, serving as den mother for her son's Cub Scout pack. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting. A great cook, she frequently would bake cakes for her friends.

Family members include her husband of 36 Years, Leo P. Blanchette; a son, Shawn Blanchette and his wife, Samantha; a daughter, Shelley Blanchette and her fiancé, Alton Eaton III, all of Seabrook; four grandchildren; a sister, Laura Turcotte of Seabrook; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

BLANCHETTE - Sheila A. Blanchette of 10 Farm Lane, Seabrook, and Louisville, Ky., died May 10, 2002. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Seabrook.

William E. Magnan

LEE - Funeral services were held Friday morning from the Brewitt Funeral Home in Exeter for William E. (Pete) Magnan, a former longtime Exeter resident and past president of the Exeter Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian Burial followed at St. Michael's Church, with the Rev. Richard St. Louis, associate pastor, officiating. Organist was Denise Kelley; soloist was Jennifer Gaines.

On Thursday evening, members of Newmarket Legion Post 67, led by Commander David Matthews and Chaplain Colin D. White, held memorial services at the Brewitt Funeral Home.

Following committal prayers by the Rev. St. Louis at the Exeter Cemetery, the flag was folded and presented by past Commander Donald L. Small to Mr. Magnan's companion of 22 years, Irene Bond of Lee.

Bearers were Robert White, James Brown, Frank Rossi, Daniel and Jerry Mitchell, and Daniel Sterre.

Marjorie Hilton

VICTORIA, Texas - Marjorie Hilton, 87, a former long-term resident of Wells, Maine, died at her home on May 10, 2002, after a long illness. She was born May 30, 1914.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha Truax of Victoria; a sister, Marion Chase of Wells, Maine; grandchildren Judy Fredette and Janice Huff, both of Massachusetts, Barry Hilton of New Hampshire, and Cheryl Truax, Alicia King, and Carl Truax, all of Texas; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Hartley Hilton; her son, Howard Hilton; her brother, Russel Guest; and a grandson, Kenneth Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family is taking donations for expenses at 403 Ball Airport Road, Victoria TX 77904.

Ethel L. Dozier

HAMPTON - Ethel Lena (Mitrook) Dozier, 86, widow of Henry Howard Dozier Sr., of 777 Lafayette Road, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the Partridge House.

She was born in Portsmouth on June 25, 1915, a daughter of Ollie and Mary Kortina (Sullaway) Mitrook.

She had been a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth for 86 years.

She was a member and chaplain of the Fleet Reserve Association and a member of the Navy Wives Club.

She is survived by three sons, Richard M. Dozier of Portsmouth, Gary W. Dozier of Hampton Falls, and Henry H. Dozier Jr., of Portland, Maine; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Tuveson and Minnie Jones, both of Portsmouth; one brother, Tony Mitrook, of Holyoke, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Little; and a brother, John Mitrook.

DOZIER - Ethel Lena (Mitrook) Dozier, 86, of 777 Lafayette Road, Hampton, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Sunday, May 12, 2002. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, 1035 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wayne O. Dozier Memorial Fund, c/o 100 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Eugene S. Clough

KITTERY, Maine - Eugene Sterling Clough, 75, of 133 Old Post Road, died May 12, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in Kittery on June 16, 1926, he was a son of George A. and Cora (Sterling) Clough and attended local schools.

As a young man he worked at the Rockingham Racetrack as an exercise boy working with the race horses; he later joined the U.S. Army, serving in Germany, Belgium and later in Panama.

He later worked for and retired from Shop 56 of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipe fitter, where he earned the nickname "Spider" for his ability to get into and work in very confined spaces.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Naval Lodge AF & AM of Kittery. He enjoyed researching the genealogy of his family, spending many hours over the years looking into his family roots.

He was married in 1950 to his wife of more than 42 years, Edith Maude Cass, who died in 1992.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda, and her husband, Peter Brown, of Conway, N.H.; a son, George A. Clough of Pendleton, Ore.; a brother, Lester Clough, also of Kittery; three grandchildren, Kimberly White, Ernest Brown and Sara Brown; as well as two great-grandchildren, Erica White and Joshua White.

He was predeceased by his son Gordon Clough; and two brothers, Gordon Clough and Donald Clough.

CLOUGH - Eugene Sterling Clough, 75, of Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at York Hospital. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, in the Harmony Grove Cemetery on Sagamore Avenue in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Steven Aldrich of the Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Marilyn R. Foye

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Marilyn R. Foye, who died May 9, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, was held on Monday, May 13, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME. The Rev. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiated; he recalled many fond memories that people in attendance had of Marilyn's life spent on the Isles of Shoals and with friends and family on White Island.

In attendance were her family, neighbors and close friends from Kittery; all were invited to her brother Ralph Sunderlin's home on Palmer Avenue in Kittery for a time of refreshment.

Burial took place in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Jackson P. King

CAPE NEDDICK, Maine - Jackson Perkins King, 75, a resident of Ogunquit Road, and a winter resident of Avon Park, Fla., died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at his home in Cape Neddick.

He was born in York on June 8, 1926, the son of Phillip Henry and Helene Perkins King. He graduated from Medford High School, Medford, Mass., with the Class of 1944. He received a B.S. in education in 1949 and a master's degree in education in 1968 from Mass. State College in Fitchburg, Mass.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Air Corps.

He taught school in Whitinsville, Mass., for six and a half years and in Concord, Mass., for 15 and a half years. He taught industrial arts and coached basketball and baseball. His philosophy of education was the integration of discipline and teaching. This approach helps students channel their energies and guide their initiatives not only to schoolwork but also to every endeavor in life.

After retirement from teaching in 1971, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Sam Jack Perkins, who built the Saint Aspinquid Hotel in Ogunquit. Mr. King built Kings Court Motel on Beach Street and managed it for 16 years. It is still owned and operated by the King family.

He enjoyed golf and skiing.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beverly Cousins King of Cape Neddick; two sons, Robert H. King and his wife, Gail, of South Berwick, and Jackson P. King Jr. of Ogunquit; three daughters, Kathy Jane King of Wells, Debra A. Barrett and her husband, Andrew, of Brooks, Ga., and Jill P. Verhow and her husband, Christopher, of Ogunquit; and one granddaughter, Sierra Drew Barrett.

He was predeceased by his sister, Jane King Pattee.

KING - Jackson Perkins King, 75, of Cape Neddick, Maine, and a winter resident of Avon Park, Fla., died Saturday, May 11, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, Maine, where a Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. King to the York Hospital Home Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909, or to your favorite charity.

HANSEN - Theodore J. "Ted" Hansen, of Lindsay Road in York, Maine, died Jan. 7, 2002, in Winter Haven, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, in the First Parish Church of York, York Street, York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Arietta E. Brown

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Arietta "Rita" E. Brown, 90, of Simpson Way, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at York Hospital in York.

She was born June 5, 1911, in Fremont, N.H., daughter of the late Wilfred and Lummina (Renaud) Paul.

She had lived most of her life between Connecticut and New Hampshire. Her longest residence was for 15 years, on Elm Street in Epping, N.H. During that time, she spent several years working for different shoe shops in Newmarket, Portsmouth, and Exeter, N.H.

In her spare time, she enjoyed going for walks, playing bingo and ten-pin bowling, and crocheting. She also collected elephant sculptures.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Brown.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Richard and Bea Lebeau Sr. of Newmarket, N.H., and Rene and Bonnie Lebeau of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter and her husband, Mrs. Lanny (Bea) Lovlien of Epping, N.H.; one stepson and his wife, George and Mary Brown of Somersworth, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Jackie Brown and Carol Brown; nine grandchildren, Linda Sidney, Jessica Powell, Bert Richardson, Pamela McDonald, Roy Chapman Jr., Janice Couillard, Roger Lebeau, Richard Lebeau Jr., and Scott Lebeau; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Landregan of Boynton Beach, Fla.; and extended family in Connecticut.

BROWN - Arietta "Rita" E. Brown, 90, of North Berwick, Maine, died May 13, 2002. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Epping. Flowers are acceptable. Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping, is handling the arrangements.

Claire Ellen Oliver

BARRINGTON - Claire Ellen Oliver, 46, of Province Road, died on May 10, 2002, at her home, after a two-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Winchester, Mass., on Feb. 20, 1956, a daughter of Richard and Joan (Rasmussen) DeFeo. She was a 1974 graduate of Melrose High School and a 1979 graduate of the Northeastern University School of Nursing.

She worked as a registered nurse at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for three years. After moving to Dover, she worked at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, from 1981 to 1992. She had been with the Homemakers of Strafford County as a nurse for the adult day out program for the past 10 years. She was active in the Girl Scouts and served as leader to Barrington Troop 881 for three years. She was also involved in Barrington's "Adopt a Cemetery" program. She volunteered for many projects and events in the area.

The staff members of the Homemakers were a great support and comfort to her during her illness. Many employees adjusted their work schedules and donated their personal sick time. This kindness bolstered her spirits and let her develop a peace with her family and her issues.

She is survived by her husband, Stan Oliver; her two children, Adam and Bryn Oliver; sisters Gail Nolte of West Newbury, Mass., Joyce Wood of Raymond, Lori Felch of Bradford, Mass., and Rachael Lanik of Haverhill, Mass.; a brother, Richard V. DeFeo of South Hamilton, Mass.; her brother's and sisters' spouses; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and her favorite dog, Jake.

OLIVER - Claire Oliver, 46, of Province Road, Barrington, died May 10, 2002. A memorial gathering will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, at the Durham Evangelical Church at 114 Dover Road (Route 108) in Durham. If you have a favorite poem or story relating to Claire's life, feel free to share it with the gathering. Time will be available during the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Homemakers of Strafford County for the new building to house the adult day out program. Contributions should be sent to the Homemakers of Strafford County, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867.

Lex O. McMillan Jr.

CONWAY, Ark. - Lex Oran McMillan Jr., 78, beloved father and devoted husband, died Sunday night, May 12, 2002, at his home, after battling cancer for more than two years. Born on Sept. 19, 1923, in Marshall (Harrison County), Texas, he was a son of Lex Oran McMillan and Eulalie Attaway McMillan, both deceased.

At the age of 19, McMillan volunteered for the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the 2nd Marine Air Wing, VMF 312, in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946 he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma to study petroleum engineering and worked for several years in the industry prior to relocating to Atlanta, Ga., where he worked in various sales capacities. In 1978, he moved to Newark, Del., to be the mid-Atlantic sales representative for GC Electronics of Rockville, Ill. In 1996, he became an independent manufacturers representative, doing business as McMillan Sales Inc.

A convert to Catholicism, he had been an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Atlanta, of St. Thomas More Church in Decatur, Ga., and of St. Mary's Church in Wilmington, Del.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Louise Dillard McMillan; four children, Bonnie Louise McMillan Brown of Brentwood, N.H., Lex Oran McMillan III of Gettysburg, Pa., John Daniel McMillan of Big Canoe, Ga., and Joseph Dillard McMillan of Conway; a sister, Catherine McMillan Reynolds of El Dorado; a brother, Howard Louis McMillan of Edmond, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren.

McMILLAN - Lex Oran McMillan Jr., 78, of Conway, Ark., died Sunday night, May 12, 2002. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at West View Cemetery, 1680 West View Drive SW, Atlanta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Hospice Home Care of Conway, 2225 Prince St., Conway, AR 72034. Arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway (501) 327-7727.
