Olida Doris Miliner

ROCHESTER - Olida Doris Miliner, 79, of 22 Tamarack Lane, died peacefully at her home on Monday, May 20, 2002, in the presence of loving family members. Her death came at the end of a long period of declining health.

Olida was born on Jan. 6, 1923, in Salmon Falls, now known as Rollinsford. She was the eldest child of Joseph and Mary Jane (Duchano) Soucy, and was born at home.

In 1924, the family moved to Sanbornville, where Olida would spend the bulk of her life. She attended local schools in that community and Nute High School in Milton. She graduated in 1941.

After high school, she undertook training as a registered nurse at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Nashua. She completed her training in May 1944, and was awarded her diploma and her white nurse's cap, which she proudly wore for the next 35 years. Her first job took her to Saint Claire's Hospital in New York City, where she worked in the nursery. This would prove to be the beginning of a long love affair with pediatrics and birthing.

She took the entrance exam to enter the Navy Nursing Corps in 1945. But, before she could be inducted, the war ended.

She returned to New Hampshire and worked at Saint Louis Hospital in Berlin.

On Jan. 19, 1946, she was married to Vinton Miliner, at Saint Anne's Church in Berlin. Following a honeymoon in New York City, she and Vinton moved back to Sanbornville, where she did some private-duty nursing until February 1947, when she stopped to give birth to the first of five sons. She remained at home, and in December of 1948 gave birth to her second son.

In September of 1950, she went to work as a registered nurse at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, working mostly in the pediatric area, which she dearly loved. During her years at Huggins, she was privileged to assist in the births of two generations of children for many families, often assisting in a birth as the grandmother, whom she had helped into the world, looked on. She always spoke very fondly when recalling the thousands of births she had been present for.

She remained at Huggins Hospital for 30 years, taking off only enough time to give birth to three additional sons and to care for her aging parents when they became ill. She was forced to retire from nursing in September 1980 due to arthritis and health problems associated with her years of service as a nurse. She was, at that time, a head nurse in the maternity department.

In 1988, she and Vinton sold the house they had built in Sanbornville and moved to Cocheco River Estates in Rochester, where she would live out her remaining years surrounded by family and many wonderful and caring neighbors.

Olida was of the Roman Catholic faith and, until her illnesses limited her mobility, was very active in her faith. She continued to be a devout Catholic, in spite of the current problems, right up to the time of her death.

Olida spent her life in service to others: her family, extended family, friends and neighbors. As evidence of the depth of her commitment, it should be mentioned that two weeks prior to her death, she enjoyed a very special reunion with three of her surviving classmates from nurses training some 60 years ago. She was a person who always took the mantle of nursing very seriously, continuing to wear the starched white uniform and starched cap until her retirement. Many who knew her referred to her as "a very special lady." She will be sadly missed by all of us.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Vinton in 1993.

Olida is survived by her five sons, James W. and his wife, Sandra, of Rochester, Dwight E., who for the past year made his home with and provided loving care for her until her death, Gary L. and his wife, April, of Sanbornville, David V. of South Berwick, Maine, and Paul A. and his wife, Lorrie, of Sanbornville; her sister, Irene Letourneau and her husband, Albini, of Rochester; her brother, Oscar and his wife, Grace (Rusty), of Milton; her grandchildren, Tina Miliner and her friend, Kevin Lapointe, of Milton, Ranee Topliffe and her husband, Jeffrey, of New Durham, Danny Miliner and his wife, Chris, of Florida, Jodi Walker and her husband, Paul, of Raymond, Charlie and Catie Miliner of Sanbornville, Ryan, Sarah Danielle, and Mariah Miliner of South Berwick, and Andrew, Beth and Cassie Miliner of Sanbornville; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brian and Alex Topliffe of New Durham, and Davin Walker of Raymond; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her great-granddaughter Keanna in 1997.

Olida was a loving mother, mother-in-law and "Grammy/Memere," a devoted sister and friend, and a caring person. Those of us who were privileged to have known her will miss her dearly.

MILINER - Olida D. Miliner, 79, of Rochester, died May 20, 2002. At Olida's request, there will be no calling hours. Interment will be at Saint Anthony's Cemetery in Sanbornville, N.H. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the near future. The family requests that there be no flowers. Those who wish may donate to the Visiting Nurses Association, 178 Farmington Road, Rochester, NH 03867; or to the charity of one's choice. Olida was also a great proponent of organ donation for those who may wish to consider that gift. Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington, NH 03835.
