Nancy W. Thompson

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Former editor in chief of Harpers Bazaar Nancy White Thompson, 85, died of cancer on Saturday, May 25, 2002.

The daughter of Hearst general manager Thomas Justin White and Virginia Gillette, she was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1916. In 1938 she married Clarence Dauphinot, founder of Deltec, and gave birth to a daughter, Gillette. In 1946, after marrying Ralph D. Paine Jr. of Durham, N.H., she made her summer home in Durham for many years. Their daughter, Katharine Delahaye Paine, is publisher of The Measurement Standard, a newsletter in Portsmouth. In 1978 she married her high school sweetheart, George K. Thompson, who died in 1996.

She was fashion editor of Good Housekeeping in the 1940s and became editor of Harpers Bazaar in 1958. For two decades her decisions influenced hem lengths and style around the world. She is best known for her discovery and promotion of such photographers as Richard Avedon and Hiro and a young artist named Andy Warhol. She served as president of the International Fashion Group and received medals of merit from both the Spanish and Italian governments for her contributions to the fashion industry of those countries.

After leaving Harpers Bazaar in 1972, she became fashion director for Bergdorf Goodman and was the first woman on the board of directors of General Mills Corp. Long known for her support of the arts and other philanthropic causes, she represented the art of fashion on the National Council of the Arts from 1966 to 1972. During that time, at the request of Lady Bird Johnson, she organized a White House fashion show to promote American fashion.

In 1979, with John Esten, she co-wrote "Style in Motion: Munkacsi Photographs of the '20s, '30s and '40s" and served as a consultant to the exhibition of the same name. In the 1980s, while volunteering for the March of Dimes, she organized a fund-raising dinner prepared by some of the country's best-known chefs. Dubbed the "Gourmet Gala," it became one of the most successful fund-raising events in the organization's history. After retiring from Bergdorf Goodman in 1974, she worked for New York's public television station Channel 13 and for the Lighthouse for the Blind.

She is survived by her daughters, Katharine Delahaye Paine of Durham, N.H., and Gillette Piper of Coral Gables, Fla.; her stepdaughter, Mimi, of New York; her sister, Carmel Eitt; a brother, John Michael White; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass in her name will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of St. Thomas More on 89th Street in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Lighthouse for the Blind.

She was predeceased by a brother, Mark O'Dowd.

Harry E. Long

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Harry Ernest Long, 79, of Bond Road, died Friday, May 31, 2002, peacefully at his home after a short illness.

Born in North Andover, Mass., he was the son of Harry and Jeanie (McWilliam) Long, and moved with his family to Kittery Point where they made their home and he raised his family.

Mr. Long graduated from Traip Academy with the class of 1941, he furthered his education at Maine Maritime Academy as a member of the first graduating class known as the solid 28. These young men worked nights and weekends to prepare the academy to train 170 new recruits. Mr. Long used the skills attained at the academy as a merchant marine serving his country in World War II.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a draftsman in the engineering department for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1982.

Mr. Long was predeceased by his wife, Pauline, who died in 2000.

A loved and respected father and friend, he is survived by his children; a son, John and his wife, Susan Long, of Berwick, Maine; his daughters, Paula Rankin of Wells, Maine, Jean Hreno of Aurora, Co., Chris Long of South Portland, Maine, Sheila Long of Kittery Point, Denise Long and her husband, David MacLean, of Buzzards Bay, Mass., Melissa Brown and her husband, Todd, of Vinal Haven, Maine, and Susan Long of Kittery Point; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend Rachel Johnson of Verona, Maine.

LONG - Harry Ernest Long, 79, of Bond Road, Kittery Point, died Friday, May 31, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the Orchard Grove Cemetery on Rogers Road in Kittery. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Jayne M. Copeland

KITTERY, Maine - Jayne Marie Copeland, 42, of Cutts Road, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cystic fibrosis.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., on October 2, 1959, she was a daughter of William and Joan (Brooks) Fuller and attended local schools, graduating from Billerica High School with the class of 1978.

She made her home in Kittery 10 years ago, coming from the Billerica-Lowell, Mass. area with her family.

Jayne was known to so many for her sharp wit and sense of humor, as well as her willingness to help when it was needed, and as a special mom and friend. She was employed at a number of businesses in the Seacoast area including the Anchorage Inn, Sheraton Hotel and Bradlees. For the last four years she was a dedicated homemaker.

She is survived by her mother, Joan Fuller of Lowell, Mass.; her grandmother, Marguerite Brooks of Peabody, Mass.; her children, Kristen Fuller of Somersworth, N.H., Angela Copeland of Kittery, and Nathan Copeland of Kittery; her brother William Fuller and his fiancée, Dawn Friant, of Lowell; a sister, Linda Hastey of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Sklyne Lucas and Ashley Lucas of Somersworth, N.H.; and her niece and nephew Amber and Freddy Ouelette. She is also survived by a dear and supportive friend, Paula Watt.

COPELAND - Jane Marie Copeland, 42, of Cutts Road, Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, May 30, 2002. Family and friends may call from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, where the funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Donations may be made to her family c/o Kristen Fuller, 6 Cutts Road, Lot No. 6, Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

BLADER - Anne E. Blader, 65, of Pepperell Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died suddenly Thursday, May 30, 2002 at York Hospital. A commemoration celebration will be held for family and friends to attend at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Captain Simeon's Galley Loft. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Pearl E. Hoyt

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Pearl E. Hoyt, 83, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at Englewood Community Hospital.

Mrs. Hoyt was born in Portsmouth on June 14, 1918, the daughter of George and Edna (Young) Garland. She and her husband, Edward Jackson Hoyt, moved to Englewood in 1970 from Newington.

She was the organist for Community Presbyterian Church for several years, and a member of the Englewood Chapter of Sweet Adelines, BPO Does Drove #203, and Women of the Moose #1582.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt had been married 62 years at the time of his death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Fred Garland of Englewood, Fla.

Survivors include a son, F. Jackson Hoyt of Newington; daughters, Joan Crowell and Janella Jones, both of Great Falls, Mont., and Janet Knowles of Englewood, Fla.; sisters, Nancy Shuttleworth of Sarasota, Fla., Vonetta Bauer of Niantic, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

HOYT - Pearl E. Hoyt, 83, of Englewood, Fla. died May 31, 2002. A memorial service will be presented by the BPO Does Drove #203 at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, at the Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood Chapel. Edwin R. Ciampa

YORK, Maine - Edwin R. Ciampa, 72, of 2 Mill Pond Lane, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Medford, Mass., the son of Emilius and Ethel (Colson) Ciampa.

He was a 1947 graduate of Medford High School and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston. Mr. Ciampa also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He was the owner and president of Crest Motors in Woburn, Mass., for many years, and recently retired.

He formerly resided in Medford and Reading, Mass., moving to York in 1995, where he attended First Parish Church.

Mr. Ciampa dedicated many hours to volunteer organizations. He was a lifetime member and former president of the Medford Lions Club. He was founder and past president of the Middlesex (Mass.) County Sheriff's Association and was a member of the Chapter 5 Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and the sheriff's association's motorcycle team. In 1992, he served as chairman of the Boston chapter of the Better Business Bureau.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Elroy Ciampa, who died in 1937, and Roger Ciampa, who died in 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joan (Simpson) Ciampa of York; one son, Roy E. Ciampa and his wife, Marcelle M., of Ipswich, Mass.; one daughter, Caroline C. Stoller and her husband, Kenneth, of Framingham, Mass.; his stepmother, Elsie Ciampa of Lexington, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

CIAMPA - Edwin R. Ciampa, 72, of 2 Mill Pond Lane, York, Maine, died June 1, 2002 in York. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, in the First Parish Congregational Church on York Street in York. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lucas-Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. William S. Carlton

PORTSMOUTH - William Stephen "Steve" Carlton, Jr., 90, of 30 Burkitt St., died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after suffering a stroke at his home.

Born May 2, 1912 in Portsmouth, he was the son of William S. Carlton, Sr. and Emily Pauline (Pearson) Carlton. He attended schools in Manchester and Portsmouth.

Steve began his working life as a dairyman at the Benson farm in Lebanon, N.H., where he worked for several years, traveling with the Bensons' prize cattle to fairs and shows up and down the East Coast.

In 1940, he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he contributed to the construction of many subMarines throughout World War II. In 1949, Steve went to work with the Maxam Brothers Construction Company of Portsmouth, and was involved with the construction and remodeling of innumerable public buildings and private homes throughout New Hampshire and the Seacoast region, until his retirement in 1974.

After that, he and his wife, Lillian "Lee," traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada, and spent their winters in Florida.

Steve was possessed of an insatiable thirst for knowledge and was known to impress university professors and professional historians, as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with his in-depth knowledge of local lore and history. His hobbies included rock and coin collecting, hunting, fishing and all types of outdoor activities. He also gained a love of horses during his early years in farm work, and enjoyed anything to do with them.

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years, serving as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout and Explorer troops.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian Hannah (Pulkkinen); a brother, Carl A. Carlton and his wife, Mary, of Woodlawn Circle, Portsmouth; three sons, William S. (III) and his wife, Stefania, of the United Kingdom and Eliot, Maine; James E. and his significant other, Vivian, of Portsmouth, and Lubbock, Texas, and Robert A. and wife, Kathryn, of the Netherlands; a daughter, Anita R. Bunting and husband, Russell, of Kittery, Maine; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five nephews and two.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Carlton Mercer and Mabel H. Carlton; a brother, E. Foss Carlton Sr.; and a grandson, Kevin H. Carlton.

CARLTON - William Stephen "Steve" Carlton, Jr., 90, of 30 Burkitt St., Portsmouth, died June 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made to The Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, P.O. Box 7004, Portsmouth, NH 03802-7004.

Beatrice Graziano

DOVER - Beatrice (Marshall) Graziano, 91, of Langdon Place, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

She was born in Albany, N.Y. on Dec. 7, 1910, the daughter of Asa and Ada (Brown) Marshall.

She was a graduate of Daytona Beach (Fla.) High School, attended Florida State University and graduated from Castleton State College in Vermont. She lived most of her life in Castleton, moving to Dover in the 1980s.

After teaching eight years in Vermont and Massachusetts public schools, she became interested in disabled children. She earned graduate credits in special education at Boston University, Trinity College and the University of Vermont. The last 15 years of her teaching career were spent at the Vermont Achievement Center of Rutland, Vt.

She was a member of the Castleton Women's Club, the Castleton Historical Society, the Vermont Retired Teachers Association and the Rutland County Retired Teachers Association.

The widow of Francis Graziano, who died in 1990, she is survived by two daughters, Marsha Ballantyne of Worcester, Mass., and Patti Hudak of Cleveland, Ohio; one son, Dr. Mark Graziano of York, Maine; two sisters, Mary Shipley of Sarasota, Fla., and Adelynne Powers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren and one nephew.

GRAZIANO - Beatrice (Marshall) Graziano, 91, of Langdon Place, Dover, died Friday, May 31, 2002. There are no colling hours. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, at the Hillside Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Castleton, Vt., with Rev. Robert Boutwell officiating. Friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vermont Achievement Center, 88 Park St., Rutland, VT 05702. Funeral arrangements are by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, NH.

Kenneth R. Daynard

ATKINSON - Mr. Kenneth R. Daynard, 49, of 12 Hovey Meadow Road, died at his home on Sunday morning, June 2, 2002, following a long battle with cancer.

Born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in Canton, Conn., Mr. Daynard graduated from Canton High School with the Class of 1971 and was a member of the varsity basketball team. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he was a member of the varsity soccer team.

Mr. Daynard worked as a commercial real estate land developer and was employed by Drakes-Appleton Corp. of Hampton since 1996.

He was a member of Holy Angels Parish of Plaistow, and Cedardale Health and Athletic Club, where he played in several racquetball tournaments.

Mr. Daynard was also a licensed private pilot, certified in single and complex engines.

In addition to his wife, Shirleyan (Kochan) Daynard, he is survived by a stepson, Jeffrey Kelly of Worcester, Mass.; a niece; two nephews; and several cousins.

DAYNARD - Kenneth R. Daynard, 49, of 12 Hovey Meadow Road, Atkinson, N.H., died June 2, 2002. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Plaistow. Burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843.

Pauline L. Sterry

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Pauline Louise Sterry, 71, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Coral Springs Medical Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1930, in Exeter, N.H., she was the daughter of Melvin and Dorothy (Wilson) Moore, and had resided in Hampton for some 20 years.

She was graduate of Hampton Academy, Class of 1948, a member of the drama club, varsity basketball team, cheerleading group and drum majorette corps. She donated many hours, over the years, to the Habilitation Center for the Handicapped in Boca Raton, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Arthur F. Sterry, and four sons, Steven Sterry and his wife, Patricia, of Lockport, N.Y.; Scott Sterry and his wife, Judith, of Webster, N.Y.; Barry Sterry and his wife, Heather, of Beaconsfield, United Kingdom; and Christopher Sterry of Coral Springs, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Arnold Moore.

Bernice I. Geist

SANBORNVILLE - Bernice I. Geist, 82, of Route 109, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Mass.

Born March 27, 1920 in Barre, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sybil (Davenport) Roark.

Mrs. Geist has lived in Sanbornville for the past 26 years.

She enjoyed arts and crafts.

In addition to her husband, Lincoln Geist of Sanbornville, she is survived by her stepdaughters, Ursula Sandine of Mena, Ark., June Horne of Milton; a stepson, Glen Runnels of Acton, Maine; her brother, Ardon Roark of Sanford, Maine; her sisters, Ebba Borqkvist of Eliot, Maine, Annet Borqkvist of Kittery, Maine. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas Roark and Arla Burke and her sister, Ann Peterson.

GEIST - Bernice I. Geist, 82, of Route 109, Sanbornville, N.H., died May 30, 2002. Burial was in the Milton Mills Cemetery in Milton Mills, N.H. at 10 a.m. on Monday. Arrangements were under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

John J. Muniz

HAMPTON - John J. Muniz of 12 Taylor St., died suddenly on Friday, May 31, 2002, in Quebec City, Canada, while vacationing with his wife.

He was born in Taunton, Mass., on March 14, 1927, son of the late Antoine and Annie (Silver) Muniz.

He graduated from Taunton High School, Taunton, Mass., in 1945. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Navy Seal in San Diego, Calif., and throughout the Pacific theater.

He trained as an electrical engineer at Coyne Electrical College in Boston.

He served in managerial positions at Geilich Tanning in Taunton, Mass., at Prime Tanning in Berwick, Maine, and at Saco Tanning in Saco, Maine, for several years. Once in Hampton, he owned and operated Ann and Andy's Candy Store on High Street and at Hampton Beach for three years. Later, he worked as an independent installer of vacuum systems in the Seacoast area until his retirement in 1997.

He was an active member at St. Andrews by-the-Sea in Rye, where he served on the vestry. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Portsmouth, he actively participated weekly in the community program known as the Common Table.

He was the husband of Jinny Bailey Muniz for 14 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, Thomas Muniz of Portsmouth and John Muniz of Arizona; one daughter, Maryann House and her husband, Thomas, of Stratham; four stepsons, Richard Mercer Jr. of Nashua, Glenn Mercer of Hampton, Gary Mercer of Kittery, Maine, and Timothy Mercer of Sidney, Maine; one stepdaughter, Robin M. Williams of Englewood, Calif.; 10 stepgrandchildren, who joyfully and lovingly embraced him as their stepgrandfather, Jason Mercer, Joshua Mercer, Meagan Mercer, Sharon Mercer, Kendra Mercer, Jack Mercer, Katherine Mercer, Jerry Wornica, Adam Wornica and Jaimie Williams; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Muniz; and a sister, Annina Ferreira.

MUNIZ - John J. Muniz, of Hampton, died Friday, May 31, 2002. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, c/o the Common Table, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to St. Andrew's by-the-Sea, P.O. Box 555, Rye, NH 03870. Joseph J. Donovan

HAMPTON - Joseph J. Donovan, 69, died early in the morning on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at his daughter's home in Talent, Ore.

He was born in Boston on Oct. 12, 1932. He graduated from Chelsea High in 1950 and then served in the Navy during the Korean War. He graduated from Boston College in 1959 and had a career in management for many years, working with various companies including U.S. Gypsum, Transitron Electronics and Converse. After leaving the corporate world, he enjoyed many years as a painting contractor.

He was a friend to all he met. He brought his intelligence, humor, wit and, most of all, honesty to numerous altruistic pursuits, including lay activities in the Catholic Church, such as Sunday school instructor, Benedictine Oblate, Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. Among many other volunteer activities and works of conscience, he received a community service award from the Jewish Anti-Defamation League for interfaith efforts with the Encounter for Ecumenical Action (a multidenominational collective of churches and temples on the North Shore) and was recognized for participation in actions against racism by the Catholic Interracial Council of Boston and acknowledged for efforts in Jewish-Christian dialogues.

For many years he and his first wife opened their home in Manchester by the Sea, Mass., as a halfway house, or transitional environment, for troubled teens and a center for social change and awareness; and in later years he had an active involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous. He enjoyed bowling, cribbage, reading and conversing. An engaging personality and a spiritual man, his passing is a great loss for his family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Daren M. Donovan of Gloucester, Mass., and Shawn L. Donovan; his wife, Ann, and their two daughters, Emily and Fiona, of Fairfield, Conn.; two daughters, Erin E. Donovan of New York, N.Y., and Arden M. Prehn and her husband, Roger, and their two sons, Tyler and Gresham, of Talent, Ore.; a brother, John J. Donovan; two sisters, Marie Dudinski and Jean Spadorcia; Ann Trotter Richardson and Elise Lockhart (mother of their four children); and his good friend Fred Oullette of Hampton Falls.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth "Libby" McLaughlin.
