Lucy E. Dawson

HAMPTON - Lucy Eleanor (Manix) Dawson, 85, of 5 Cogger St., died Friday, May 31, 2002 at her residence.

She was born in Beverly, Mass., on Jan. 31, 1917, the daughter of the late Cornelius and Lucy M. (Dockum) Manix.

Moving to Exeter as a child, she attended the Exeter school system and graduated from the Robinson Female Seminary in 1935, serving as president of her class. Later she attended the Margaret Pillsbury College of Nursing in Concord and the Bellevue Hospital in New York City, receiving a degree in nursing.

Mrs. Dawson served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, ATC Division, as First Lieutenant Nurse in the Medical Corps during World War II. Later she served as a staff nurse with the Red Cross Blood Mobile in North Hampton.

She served as a nurse for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, the Simplex Wire and Cable Company of Newington, and later as an Occupational Health Nurse by GTE Sylvania of Exeter, retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Dawson was active in the Monday Club of Hampton, Senior Citizens Club of Hampton, Hampton American Legion, Disabled Veterans of Newington, Women's Military Association of N.H., the Hampton Recreation Advising Committee, the Rockingham County Area Senior Advising Committee, Robinson Seminary Alumnae, the N.H. Retired Officers Club, the American Association of Retired People, the Exeter Area Chapter, Retired Senior Volunteer Program-Seacoast Area, the Hampton Republican Committee, Oasis at Exeter Hospital, the Rockingham Advisory Committee on Aging, and the Harmony Club Nurses Group.

She was a volunteer at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton, and also placed calls to shut-ins.

Mrs. Dawson was predeceased by her husband, James Dawson, who died in 1978.

Family members include two step-grandchildren, Michael Thompson of San Diego, Calif., and James Thompson and his wife Ann, of Ashland, Mass; three brothers, William E. Manix Sr. of Exeter, Thomas C. Manix of Exeter and James J. Manix of Fairfield, Calif.; one sister, Lena Knight of Columbus, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Dawson was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Dawson Thompson; a brother, John Manix; a sister, Cornelia Huntington; and a son-in-law, Jack Thompson.

DAWSON - Lucy Eleanor (Manix) Dawson, 85, of 5 Cogger St., Hampton, N.H., died May 31, 2002. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Private burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Arrangements are by the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Elizabeth G. Riggs

ATLANTA, Ga. - Elizabeth Garretson Riggs Kaiser died May 30, 2002.

She was formerly of Rye, N.Y., and Vero Beach, Fla., where she was very active in all community, school and charitable organizations.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl August Kaiser.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Kaiser Schulte of Atlanta; sons Richard G. Kaiser of Lee, N.H., and Peter R. Kaiser of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren Kate Kaiser, Courtney L. Kaiser, Andrew R. Schulte, Ian G. Schulte and Elizabeth Alexandra Schulte.

Alan K. Nelson

ELIOT, Maine - Alan K. Nelson, 71, of Rollingwood Drive, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at York Hospital in York.

Born Oct. 8, 1930, in Hartford Conn., he was a son of Oscar and Margaret (Lawrence) Nelson. He attended local schools, graduating from Wethersfield High School with the Class of 1948, and furthered his education at the University of Connecticut. As a member of the Connecticut National Guard, he served his country during the Korean War.

He was employed by Combustion Engineering for more than 25 years in Windsor, Conn., before moving to Eliot in 1975 and working for ABB in Newington for 20-plus years, retiring in the late 1990s. During his time in Connecticut, he and his wife were active members of the Central Baptist Church in Hartford, Conn. He served as a Little League coach and as an umpire for Little League and Babe Ruth leagues.

After moving to the Seacoast, he became a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club, enjoying time spent on the golf course. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid bridge player and crossword puzzle expert. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing with the Seacoast Square Dancing Club, of which he was a past president.

He was never idle; whether playing one of his favorite sports, or helping a friend or family member with a project around their home, he was always busy.

His greatest enjoyment, however, was his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Alice (Hall) Nelson of Eliot; his daughters, Kathy Hunt and her husband, Daniel, of Savannah, Tenn., Laurie Smith of Eliot, and Shari Mitchell and her husband, Jeffrey, of Myakka City, Fla.; his son, Alan K. Nelson Jr. of Enfield Conn.; his two sisters, Avril Miller of East Hartford, Conn., and Carol Holmelund of Dover, N.J.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

NELSON - Alan K. Nelson, 71, of Rollingwood Drive in Eliot, Maine, died Sunday, June 2, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.

Mildred A. Parker

EXETER - Mildred "Millie" A. Parker, 83, of High Street, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Eventide Home after a brief illness.

She was born June 16, 1918, in Stafford Springs, Conn., daughter of the late Rev. Charles A. and Mildred (Rankin) Parker.

She had been a longtime resident of Stratham before moving to Exeter a year and a half ago. She was a 1937 graduate of the Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter and also a graduate of McIntosh Business College.

She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 31 years as a payroll clerk, retiring in 1973.

She was very active in Stratham town affairs, being a founding member of the Stratham 76ers. She was a former organist and Sunday school teacher at the Stratham Baptist Church. She was a Girl Scout leader in Stratham, past matron of Rivermouth Chapter OES Portsmouth, and past president of the Unity Club in Stratham.

She was a 70-year member and past master of the Winnicutt Grange #170, past member of Pamona and state and national granges, and a charter member of the Stratham Historical Society. She was a reporter for the Town Transcript for several years. She was a member of the Stratham Community Church and did volunteer work at Lamprey Health Care in Newmarket.

She leaves one brother, Herman Parker of Exeter; 13 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

PARKER - Mildred "Millie" A. Parker, 83, of Exeter, died June 2, 2002. There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at the Stratham Community Church, with the Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery, Greenland. Following the committal, a reception will be held at the Stratham Community Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Stratham Volunteer Rescue Squad, Bunker Hill Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885, or to the SPCA, Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885. JEWELL - Dorothy Ruth Haley Jewell, 72, of Somersworth, died Sunday, June 2, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday from the Newmarket Community Church, Main Street, Newmarket. Burial will follow in the Haley private cemetery, Lee. Evan L. Boynton

SPRUCE HEAD, Maine - Evan L. Boynton, 72, died unexpectedly at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born Sept. 1, 1929, in Somerville, Mass., he was a son of Harry and Lillian (Wood) Boynton. He attended local schools, graduating from Lexington High School. He furthered his education at Arlington Academy of Music and Northeastern University.

He was a self-employed building contractor in Billerica, Mass., southern New Hampshire, southern Maine and Spruce Head.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Germaine (Dutile) Boynton; his children, Karen Freeman of Dover, N.H., Nancy Snyder of Farmington, N.H., Marilyn Lynn of Clearwater, Fla., Evan H. Boynton of Berwick, Brandon S. Boynton of Jacksonville, Fla., Carolyn Todd of Chocorua, N.H., James Kolios of Kennebunk, and Diane Kolios of Cushing; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

BOYNTON - Evan L. Boynton, 72, of Spruce Head, Maine, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine. Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Eliot United Methodist Church, Route 236 in Eliot, with the Rev. Ronald Messer officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Daniel G. Cormier

ROCHESTER - Daniel G. Cormier, 43, of 37 Hemlock St., died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, following a motorcycle accident.

He was born in Rochester on June 38, 1958, the son of Eugene and Marguerite (Morin) Cormier, and lived in the area his entire lifetime.

Mr. Cormier had worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for nearly 16 years. He had recently been promoted to operations manager. He had graduated from McIntosh College in Dover, and received a Bachelor' Degree from Franklin Pierce College and a Master's Degree in business administration from New England College.

Dan was a kind and gentle man, and a loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother. He was very family oriented, and especially enjoyed spending time with his two sons. He enjoyed working with computers, music and playing guitar. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and was a member of the Harley Owner's Group.

In addition to his wife, Sharon (Sanfacon) Cormier of Rochester, whom he married in 1995, he is survived by two sons, Adam D. Cormier and Benjamin J. Cormier of Rochester; his parents of Rochester; two brothers, Denis Cormier and his wife Norma of Rochester, Dale Cormier and his wife Debby of Barrington; a sister, Donna Berube and her husband Peter of Rochester; an uncle and several aunts; nieces, nephews and cousins.

CORMIER - Daniel G. Cormier, 43, of 37 Hemlock St., Rochester, N.H., died June 2, 2002. Family members and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, at the H.J. Grondin and Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, at Holy Rosary Church, Rochester. Burial will be at a later date at Holy Rosary Cemetery. For those who desire, an education fund is being established for his sons, in care of Sharon Cormier, 37 Hemlock St., Rochester, NH 03867. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

DONOVAN - Joseph J. Donovan, 69, died May 23, 2002. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, followed by a reception at the church. Donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous or to a charity of one's choice.

Mary Keefe

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mary "Molly" Keefe, 92, widow of William "Bill" Keefe, of 235 Maplewood Ave., were held Thursday, May 30, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Monsignor Lawrence Burns. Lector was Ed Shea. Organist was Maureen O'Shea, and soloist was Patricia Rose.

The eulogy was given by her granddaughter-in-law, Deantha Grattan.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal.

Pallbearers were grandsons Larry Grattan, Joseph Grattan and William Grattan and great-grandson Joseph Grattan.

Diane O'Connor

HAMPTON - The funeral for Diane O'Connor, 51, of Franklin, Mass., formerly of North Hampton, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Lavigne. Pallbearers were Ralph A. "Bud" O'Connor Jr., Jerry O'Connor, Dan O'Connor, William O'Connor, Peter Thomas and Kevin Janvrin.

Isaac A. Ake

HAMPTON - Isaac Abiodun Ake, 52, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Exeter Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Ohia, Nigeria, on Dec. 25, 1950, a son of James and Comfort (Iwezuoa) Ake. He came to the United States in 1969 as an exchange student and was a 1971 graduate of Exeter High School.

He was an environmental chemist for more than 10 years with the city of Newburyport, Mass.

He was an active member of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth and served as a deacon and a senior commander of the Royal Ranger Outpost of the church. He enjoyed gardening.

Family members include his wife of 22 years, Ruth (Izirein) Ake; two sons, Ohi Ake and Emmanuel Ake, both of Hampton; a daughter, Doni Ake of Hampton; four brothers, Benson Ake, Franklin Ake, Augustine Ake and Stephen Ake, all of Nigeria; a sister, Dorcas Ake of Nigeria; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

AKE - Isaac Abiodun Ake, 52, of Hampton, died Saturday, June 1, 2002. Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at Bethel Assembly of God, 200 Chase Drive, Portsmouth, with the funeral to follow at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Assembly of God. Hazen C. Hayward

PORTSMOUTH - Masonic services for Hazen C. "Chuck" Hayward, 82, of 19 Stark St., were held on Friday evening at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM. Services were conducted by Donald L. Stevens, PM, Acting W.M.; Robert L. Sutherland Jr., W.M.; A. Kenneth Day, PM, Chaplain; Glen R. Gordon, PM, Secretary; Edgar Anderson, PM, Treasurer; Verne Anderson, SW; Rodney Robinson, PM; Calvin Wilder, PM; and William Sawyer, PM.

VFW services were held Friday evening at the funeral home by Emerson Hovey Post #168 of Portsmouth and conducted by Paul F. Cushing, District #7 Commander; John D. Mercer III, Sr. Vice Commander, Post 168; and Harry A. Laderbush, Past State Commander, N.H. Dept.

Dorothy R. Jewell

SOMERSWORTH - Dorothy Ruth Haley Jewell, 72, of Walnut Street, died June 2, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Epping on Aug. 25, 1929, she was a daughter of Byron and Ruth (Burnham) Haley.

She was a 1946 graduate of Epping High School and lived her entire life in the Seacoast area, the last 17 years in Somersworth.

She was a 1974 graduate of White Pines Community College in Chester, where she received a degree in social services. She worked with the elderly in social services and as a CNA. For several years she had her own ministry, Compassionate Care Ministry.

Her greatest joys in life were loving and caring for her children, grandchildren and anyone around her. She enjoyed reading and walking but most of all taking care of others.

Survivors include four sons, Bradley Jewell of Newmarket, Gregory Jewell of Alexandria, Biff Jewell of Nottingham, and Bruce Jewel of Middleton; one daughter, Bambie Robinson of Somersworth; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Byron Haley Jr. of Hernando, Fla.; three sisters, Marjorie Roy of Rochester, Betty LaBranche of Kittery, Maine, and Barbara Mongeon of Newmarket; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Buzz Jewell of Alexandria, in 2001.

The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home of Newmarket is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy V. Rogers

CAMDEN, Ark. - Dorothy Vallier Rogers, 78, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado.

Born Aug. 8, 1923, in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of Myron Vallier and Alice (Howard) Vallier. She attended Portsmouth, N.H., schools. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Rogers; her parents; and a sister, Phyllis Clark.

Survivors include a brother, John "Jack" P. Vallier of Port Richey, Fla., and Hampton, N.H.; and several beloved nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

ROGERS - Dorothy Vallier Rogers, 78, of Camden, Ark., died Wednesday, April 3, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2002, at the Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. No flowers please. Memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice, 1426 Northwest Ave., El Dorado, AR 71730.

Stephen D. Philbrick

NEWMARKET - Stephen D. Philbrick, 55, of New Road, died June 4, 2002, at his home.

Born Jan. 23, 1947, in Portsmouth, he was a son of John O. and Helen (Moore) Philbrick. He was raised in Portsmouth and graduated from Portsmouth High School.

He attended the University of New Hampshire for two years and left to join the Coast Guard in 1968. He was assigned to breaker duty and was stationed in the North Pole and the South Pole.

Upon leaving the Coast Guard in 1972, he immediately began working for his brother at Roger Philbrick Inc. in Rye. He was a heavy-equipment operator and remained working for his brother until the time of his illness.

Stephen was a 30-year life-member, trustee and past four-time commander of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post #67 in Newmarket. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #443 in Dover.

He attended the Rye Congregational Church.

He enjoyed camping, playing cards with friends, working in his yard, boating, taking trips with his wife, working the family farm in Rye, and visiting with his daughter, son-in-law and grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Menter) Philbrick of Newmarket; a daughter, Andrea Rumans of Rochester; a stepson, Chad Hill of Newmarket; three grandchildren; three brothers, Roger Philbrick, Richard Philbrick and Alden Philbrick, all of Rye; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lois Ann Rockwell.

PHILBRICK - Stephen D. Philbrick, 55, of Newmarket, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Moose services will be held at 2:45 p.m., and Legion services will be held at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday from the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye, with Pastor John Solie officiating. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Rye. Flowers are acceptable or, should friends desire, memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115; or to Brigham & Women's Hospital, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.
