Agnes C. Lin Sze

PORTSMOUTH - Agnes C. Lin Sze, 80, of 4 Regina Road, died peacefully on June 1, 2002, in the presence of her husband of 57 years, Morgan C. Y. Sze.

She was born in Beijing, China, on Feb. 7, 1922, daughter of Hsin Kwei Lin and Cheng Kwan Pan Lin.

A graduate of the Peking American School, she immigrated to the United States in 1940. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester in 1943 and a master's degree from the Columbia University business school in 1945.

She was interested in the fine arts, especially modern art. She received an award from the Art Student's League in New York for a triptych of abstract expressionist paintings. Her style was boldly rhythmical, modulated, and entirely her own; her work was greatly appreciated by family and friends. In earlier years she sang in the church choir and played the piano. She maintained a lifelong interest in classical music.

More than anything, she enjoyed her beloved family. Although separated by long distances and unable to travel in later years, she looked forward to family visits and kept in close touch by regular use of the telephone.

Survivors include her husband, Morgan; two brothers, Philip Lin and his wife, Constance, of Tampa, Fla., and Edmund Lin of Boston, Mass.; three sons, Dr. Karl Sze and his wife, Kay, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Arthur Sze and his wife, Carol, of Pojoaque, N.M., and Morgan C. W. Sze and his wife, Bobbi, of London, U.K.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be private.

Victor A. H. Lundgren

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Victor Arthur Herman Lundgren, 85, died Monday, June 3, 2002.

He was a native of Lynn, Mass., and had resided in Pensacola for many years. He retired from the federal government at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola as a program designer. Previously, he was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, N.H., and a former teacher at Traip Academy in Kittery, Maine.

He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth H. Lundgren; a sister, Anna L. Shuttleworth; brother and sister-in-law Carl and Eunice Lundgren; and a son-in-law, James H. Moore.

Survivors include his daughter, Karin L. Moore; a son, David A. Lundgren; granddaughter Rachel E. Moore; brother Knute H. Lundgren (Phyllis); and a brother-in-law, Albert Shuttleworth.

LUNDGREN - Victor Arthur Herman Lundgren, 85, of Pensacola, Fla., died June 3, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Pastor Robert G. Rupp officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hadji Temple Children's Transportation Unit, 800 West Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32534; or to Redeemer Lutheran School, 333 Commerce St., Pensacola, FL 32507; or to a charity of one's choice. Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. William T. Richards Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - The Rev. William Thomas Richards Jr., 61, of 65 Taft Road, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born on April 23, 1941, in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of Catherine (Sheldon) Richards of Hartford, Conn., and the late William T. Richards. He was a graduate of East Hartford High School, East Hartford, Conn.; High Point University, High Point, N.C.; and Boston University School of Theology.

The Rev. Richards began his ministry in June 1965. He served United Methodist churches in Woonsocket, R.I.; North Kingstown, R.I.; Faith Church in Chicopee, Mass.; Townsend and Pepperell, Mass.; and Burnside United Methodist Church in East Hartford, Conn., before being appointed to First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth in June 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Phoebe Helms Richards; his four children, The Rev. Philip Richards and his wife, Macy, of Latham, N.Y., Catherine Ruth Nickerson and her husband, Michael, of Seaford, Va., William Henry Richards of Manchester, Conn., and Rebecca Richards of Manchester, Conn.; a sister, Carole Haviland and her husband, Howard, of East Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Matthew and Maia; and several nieces and nephews.

RICHARDS - The Rev. William Thomas Richards Jr., 61, of 65 Taft Road, Portsmouth, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 1, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 129 Miller Ave., Portsmouth. Memorial visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, NE Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688, or to New England Annual Conference (for Urban Ministry Training Project, seed gift), P.O. Gladys I. Fife

BREMERTON, Wash. - Gladys Isabelle Fife, 89, died May 22, 2002, of a heart attack. She was born April 28, 1913, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Irving Roscious and Amy E. (Gahan) Gilbert. As a baby, she moved to New England, where she was schooled, married and raised her family. She married Rodney Fife on Feb. 12, 1938, in Kittery, Maine. The couple celebrated their 65th anniversary this year.

She had worked as a housekeeper for professors at the University of New Hampshire and as a nursing assistant. She lived in Greenland, N.H., for several years before retiring to Yuma, Ariz. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janet Sargent and her husband, Wayne, of Sale Creek, Tenn., and Lee Bunker and her husband, Ivan, of Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Lillian Kelloway of Newburyport, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sons, Frank and Edward Kimball, and by two brothers, Lloyd Gilbert and James Lindley.

Paul B. Condon

RYE - Paul Bigelow Condon, 73, of 465 Sagamore Road, died Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital following a battle with ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 20, 1928, a son of the late Orbin Charles and Edna Jane (Robinson) Condon. Educated in the Massachusetts school system, he graduated from Newton High School with the Class of 1947. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with the Class of 1952. He loved baseball and pitched for the Northeastern baseball team while a student there. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army. He had been employed by the former Western Electric in North Andover, Mass. He retired as plant manager in manufacturing at Xerox Corp. after 20 years with the company in 1987. He had at one time served as chairman of the Groveland School Board, serving two terms, and also served as chairman of the Building Committee of the Pentucket Regional Middle School during the school's construction. He was a sports enthusiast who was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. He especially loved to golf and enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. Before he began wintering in Fort Myers, Fla., he enjoyed his winters snowmobiling at his home in Errol, his seasonal residence for some 25 years. He had been a resident of Rye for the last 15 years and attended the Rye Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jane (Odiorne) Condon; they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 2, 2002. Also surviving are his children, Robin Jane (Mrs. Joseph) Murphy of Saugus, Mass., Sharon Ann Little of South Portland, Maine, and Lt. Col. Paul B. Condon Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, James and Scott Little, Sarah, Jennifer and Laura Condon, and Katie Murphy; his sisters, Mary Manning of Fort Myers, Fla., and Alice (Mrs. Jacob) Andrews of Hartland, Mich.; and his brothers, John and his wife, Ina, Condon of Chatham, Mass., and James and his wife, Ruth, of Fresno, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

CONDON - Paul Bigelow Condon, 73, of 465 Sagamore Road, Rye, died Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2002, at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Burial will follow in the family lot in Central Cemetery, Rye. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Odiorne Homestead Restoration, payable to: Treasurer, State of New Hampshire, P.O. Box 606, Rye, NH 03870. Arrangements are by the Robert K. Elizabeth "Betty" Ward

SALEM - Elizabeth "Betty" Ward, 92, formerly of Portsmouth, died on June 6, 2002 at Salemhaven Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Born on June 27, 1909, Mrs. Ward was the daughter of Albert and Ellen (Grogan) Hennessy. She was a graduate of Gorham Normal School and the University of New Hampshire.

She was a teacher for the Portsmouth public schools and also taught at Pease Air Force Base Elementary School.

Mrs. Ward was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club and the Wentworth By The Sea Golf Course, and was active in the New Hampshire Women's Golf Association. She retired to Deltona, Fla. in 1970, where she resided for 20 years.

She was the widow of Fred G. Ward, who died in 1962.

Family members include a son, Terrance Connors and his wife, Gloria, of Keene; a daughter, Ann Myer and her husband, Albert, of Hampstead; two stepsons, Warren Ward and Fred Ward Jr., both of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Shirley Peatfied and her husband, Howard, of Danbury, Conn.; a sister, Hope Wilhelm of DeBary, Fla.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Harriet R. Harris

PORTSMOUTH - Harriet Ramsay Harris left to be with the Lord on June 5, 2002 after a long illness

She was born the sixth of nine children to Leslie A. and Gustava M. Ramsay in 1936. She was raised in Portsmouth, and graduated from Portsmouth High School. She attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and was married to Raymond Harris in 1958.

She was a dedicated employee of Lonza Biologics for several years.

Mrs. Harris faithfully attended the Portsmouth Seventh Day Adventist Church where, as an officer of the church, she served as a deaconess, teacher, chorister and a tireless participant in community service activities. Until the end, she continued to encourage and inspire her family to serve God with all their hearts and might. Her happiest moments were spent with her family singing the praises of God.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be missed dearly by all whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond W. Harris Sr., of Portsmouth; three sons, Raymond Harris Jr. of Portsmouth, Peter Harris of Gonic and Anthony Harris of Dover; and a daughter, Joyce Mickelonis of Kittery.

She is also survived by four brothers, Leslie Ramsay of Newburyport, Mass., John Ramsay of New Bedford, Mass., Leonard Ramsay and Allen Ramsay of Portsmouth; four sisters, Joyce Mayo of Portsmouth, Irene Toland of Reading, Mass., Helen Williams of Batavia, Ohio and Pennsylvania and Pa-Mela Ramsay of Greenland; 11 grandchildren and host of relatives and friends.

HARRIS - Harriet Ramsay Harris, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, after a long illness. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 10, at 11 a.m. at the Portsmouth Seventh Day Adventist Church, 861 Middle St., Portsmouth.

Herman F. Greene Jr.

KITTERY, Maine - Herman F. Greene Jr., 74, of Cole Street died Friday, June 7, 2002, at York Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Boston on May 24, 1928, he was a son of the late Herman F. Sr. and Beatrice T. (May) Greene.

Mr. Greene served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War Two. He was stationed in Japan during the reconstruction effort. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a ship fitter and loftsman, retiring after 29 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of more than 51 years, Betty Anne (Turner) Greene of Kittery; his daughters, Beverly Wentworth, her husband, Derek, and their sons, Nathan and Jason of Sanford; Joan Emery, her husband, Carroll, and their daughters, Meghan, Brenna and Carol of Kittery, and Deborah Cutten, her husband, David, and their daughter, Madison, of Raymond; his sister, Carole Sheffield of Gonic, N.H.; nephews, Raymond Jacobsen of Massachusetts, Ron Jacobsen of Gonic, and Clark Whitney of Las Vegas; aunts, Frances Fisher of Kittery, and Winnifred McLean of Lubec; uncles, James and Mike May of New Jersey; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Whitney of Las Vegas.

GREENE - Herman F. Greene Jr. of Cole Street in Kittery, Maine, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at York Hospital following a long illness. Family and friends may call on Monday, June 10, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, where a funeral will be held on Tuesday June 11, 2002, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, Maine. Donations may be made in his memory to York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Hugh S. Coyle

PORTSMOUTH - Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Hugh S. Coyle, 74, of 928 South St., widower of Geraldine M. (Dorey) Coyle, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on April 10, 1928, the son of the late Alexander B. and Margaret (Nowe) Coyle.

He served in the Army during the Korean War, retiring in 1967 at the rank of sergeant 1st class after 20 years of service.

Coyle was also employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 19 years in the supply department.

He was a member of St. James Church in Portsmouth and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 140, in Portsmouth and the Loyal Order of Moose No. 444 in Portsmouth.

He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include four children, Daniel Coyle and his wife, Linda, of Northwood, N.H.; Donna Lowry and her husband, Jeff, of Dover; David Coyle and his wife, Charlene, of Rockland, Maine; and Dianne Romine and her husband, Rick, of Fresno, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Alexander Coyle and his wife, Mim, of Greenland; a sister-in-law, Sister Florence Dorey of Gloucester, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Benjamin Dorey and his wife, Pearl, of Gloucester, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

COYLE - Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Hugh S. Coyle, 74, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died June 9, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Edgewood Centre, 928 South St., Portsmouth.

Robert F. Andrews

KITTERY, Maine - Retired Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Robert F. Andrews, 79, of 9 Bowen Road, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Sentry Hill Nursing Home in York.

Born Feb. 16, 1923, in York, he was the son of Franklin W. and Mary (Ellis) Andrews; he attended Kittery schools, graduating from Traip Academy in 1940.

He was employed by the New England Telephone Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1978 as a district plant manager; concurrently he served in the U.S.A.F. during World War II and the Korean conflict and completed 34 years of reserve service, retiring as a lieutenant commander in the USCG.

He retired to Bowen Road in Kittery, where he enjoyed a beautiful view of the harbor.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Annette (Fowler) Andrews, of Kittery; two sons, James F. of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Jeffrey R. of Eliot; one daughter, Nancy Johnson of Park City, Utah; one brother, Fredric L. of Kittery Point; two sisters, Dorothy P. of Carson City, Nev., and Phyllis Andersen of Puyallup, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Ronald C., in 1990.

ANDREWS - Retired Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Robert F. Andrews, 79, of 9 Bowen Road, Kittery, Maine, died June 8, 2002. Private services will be at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.

Virginia E. Waterhouse

WESTBROOK, Maine - Virginia Eileen Waterhouse, 91, died Friday evening, June 7, 2002, at Springbrook Health Care in Westbrook after a brief illness.

Virginia was born in Portsmouth, N.H., daughter of Frank A. Leary and Anna Hett Leary.

She graduated from Keene Normal School (now Keene State), located in Keene, N.H., in 1930. Virginia returned to Keene in 2000, and was joined by five of her former classmates to celebrate their 70th Class Reunion. She taught grades 1, 2 and 3 in Littleton, N.H., until she married and moved to her husband's home in Portland. They were married for 49 years.

Virginia loved people. She was committed to volunteerism and spent much of her time and many talents working with the community and various organizations. During World War II, she worked as a volunteer locally with the American Red Cross. In 1951, she served as treasurer of the Woodfords Parent's Club. She was later the secretary of the Lincoln School Mother's Club. In the 1950's, she became a leader with the Camp Fire Girls and later was instrumental in starting the Camp Ketcha Day Camp Program. She was appointed supervisor for the Portland area. The camp was open three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and met during the summer months at Deering Oaks Park, later walking the girls up to the YMCA for swimming instructions and crafts program. She remained on the Board of Directors for several years and helped with the move from Portland to Scarborough.

Mrs. Waterhouse also held several offices in the Ladies' Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen including President and general chairman of their 47th annual dinner. She also served as President of the Deering High School Band Mother's Club in 1958 and 1959. In the early 1960s, she assisted her husband's cousin who ran the Stepping Stone Day Care in Falmouth, Maine. She was an active member of the Women's Literary Union. She also helped raise funds to build St. Pius X Church by baking and serving many, many church suppers. She was the first CCD teacher in St. Pius X Parish.

In 1972, she and her husband moved to Little Sebago Lake in Gray, Maine. She was an active member and greeter at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham, Maine.

Virginia loved swimming, cross country skiing and golf. She continued these activities well into her 70s. She was an avid reader and loved flying to Hawaii, Florida and California to visit family, friends and play golf. Her last golf game was in Hawaii in 1992 where she played golf with her grandson at the USMC, Kaneohe Klipper golf course.

Virginia always had time to make her home welcoming to family and friends. She was a homemaker in the true sense of the word. Her children's friends were always welcome, and on Saturdays, they all knew she would be making her famous homemade donuts.

She always found time to knit a sweater, or make a baby blanket. It has gone uncounted the number of baby "kitten" bonnets, sweaters and booties she made for the new arrivals.

Virginia also traveled with her family, by train, all over the country, including a trip in 1951 that originated at Union Station in Portland, and took the southern route all the way to Los Angeles. Calif. They then traveled up the California Coast to San Francisco and returned back to Portland via the northern route.

She was predeceased by her husband, Vernon F. Waterhouse, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Waterhouse is survived by her brother, Charles of California; her son, Wayne of Gray, Maine; her daughter, Mrs. Gustave (Linda) Tillman of Scarborough; two grandchildren, Major Hugh V. Tillman of Hawaii, and Kristyn of South Portland; two great-grandchildren, Greyson of Hawaii and Theresa Jean of South Portland; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Leary, Zelma Peterson, and her brother, Frank.

WATERHOUSE - Virginia Eileen Waterhouse, 91, of Westbrook, Maine, died June 7, 2002. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham, Maine, with Rev. Edward A. Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at New Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Waterhouse's memory may be made to the Patient's Activity Fund, c/o Springbrook Nursing Home, 300 Spring St., Westbrook, ME 04092.

Eric J. Dunbar

LAKE LURE, N.C. - Eric J. Dunbar, 37, formerly of Rochester, N.H., died June 4, 2002, at his home after a long illness.

Born May 26, 1965, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., he was a son of Richard B. Dunbar of Milton, N.H., and Patricia Dunbar Grey of Newton, N.H. He attended Portsmouth High School and graduated with the Class of 1983. He was formerly employed by Sleepquarters and Bourque's Carpet of Rochester, N.H.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Lib" Dunbar of Lake Lure; two brothers, Troy M. Dunbar of New Durham, N.H., and Jason M. Dunbar of Wells, Maine; two stepchildren, Kelli and David Webster; and three nephews, Kyle, Jacob and Devin Dunbar.

DUNBAR - Eric J. Dunbar, 37, formerly of Rochester, died June 4, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the True Rock Memorial Church, 21 Ten Rod Road, Rochester. Friends and family are invited. In lieu of flowers, at Eric's request, donations may be made in his memory to the Eric Dunbar Memorial Fund, c/o Citizens Bank, 1 Main St., Rochester, NH 03867, Attn: Rita Laurion. This fund is to benefit the Rochester Youth Hockey League, which he so enjoyed.

Frederick H. Tapper Jr.

RYE - Frederick H. Tapper Jr., 65, of 137 Lafayette Road, died peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2002, at his home surrounded by his wife Betty; son Danny Tapper; stepson Brian Cram and stepdaughter Deb Cram.

Fred was born Jan. 11, 1937, in Rochester, the son of the late Frederick H. Tapper Sr. and Ruth Tapper.

He served in the U.S. Navy and worked most recently at Sprague Energy in Newington. He has resided in Rye for the past 25 years. Fred was a life member of the North American Hunting club and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by several other children and grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Folsom and Hazel Scott, both of Rochester, and nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the care of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.
