Mary Hazel Brayman

PORTSMOUTH - Mary Hazel Brayman, U.S. Navy (Ret.), 72, of 346 Pleasant St., died at the Mark Wentworth Home on Friday, June 7, 2002, after a long illness.

Born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, on Dec. 13, 1929, she was the daughter of Patrick and Laura (MacDonald) Sanphy. She was a graduate of St. Theresa Convent and the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in Lynn, Mass.

She furthered her studies at Boston College to become an industrial nurse.

She was employed as one of the first industrial nurses for the General Electric Company in Lynn before joining the U.S. Army. In the Army she served in several MASH units in Vietnam. She then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in South Weymouth, Mass., and retiring from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a commander after 20 years of service to her country.

She was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The widow of Albert Brayman, she is survived by a sister, Violet A. Norton of Kittery, Maine; a grandnephew, Patrick D. Norton and his wife, Ann, of Kittery, Maine, and his children, Cassandra, Patrick and Allison Norton.

BRAYMAN - Mary Hazel Brayman, 72, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died June 7, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, Maine.

Harriet Ramsay Harris

PORTSMOUTH - Harriet Ramsay Harris died June 5, 2002, after a courageous battle with a long illness.

Well-attended memorial services for her were held on Monday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth and at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Edmund Labbe, pastor, officiated. Scripture readings were given by Mike Mickelonis and Wendell Conley Jr. The eulogy was given by Marilyn Grinall. "His Eyes on the Sparrow" was sung by Justin Gray. In attendance were members of the church. Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Labbe.

Born the sixth of nine children to Leslie A. and Gustava M. Ramsay in 1936, she was raised in Portsmouth, where she graduated from Portsmouth High School. She attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and was married to Raymond Harris in 1958. She was a dedicated employee of Lonza Biologics for several years. She faithfully attended the Portsmouth Seventh Day Adventist Church, where, as an officer of the church, she served as a deaconess, teacher, chorister, and a tireless participant in community service activities.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond W. Harris Sr. of Portsmouth; three sons, Raymond Harris Jr. of Portsmouth, Peter Harris of Gonic, and Anthony Harris of Dover; a daughter, Joyce Mickelonis of Kittery, Maine; four brothers, Leslie Ramsay of Newburyport, Mass., John Ramsay of New Bedford, Mass., and Leonard Ramsay and Allen Ramsay of Portsmouth; four sisters, Joyce Mayo of Portsmouth, Irene Toland of Reading, Mass., Helen Williams of Batavia, Ohio, and Mela Ramsay of Greenland; 11 grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

PORTSMOUTH - Well-attended memorial services for the Rev. William Thomas Richards Jr., 61, of 65 Taft Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Sunday, at the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Kurt Herber and the Rev. Barbara Herber officiated. Readings were given by the Rev. Gardin Warden and the Rev. Maria Coleman. "In the Valley Flows a River" was sung by Rebecca Richards. Organist was Bevin Bloemendaal. In attendance were a large delegation of clergy from the Seacoast area, members of the First United Methodist Church and representatives from the New England Methodist Conference. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Janet W. Meter

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Janet W. Meter, 82, of Glendale, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, after a lengthy illness in Phoenix.

She was born in September 1919.

She was a homemaker and was active in the local Methodist church.

She is survived by her husband, Warren W. Meter; a son, Mel and his wife, Lupe; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for June 20, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Phoenix, 7000 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85020.

Mary S. Flanders

RYE BEACH - Mary S. Flanders, 98, of 66 South Road, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at her home. She was the widow of Dr. Robert Flanders, who died in 1971.

Mrs. Flanders was born in Manchester on July 13, 1903, daughter of the late William Parker and Josephine (Perkins) Straw.

Raised in Manchester, she was educated at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn., Class of 1922. After graduation, she spent a year at the American School in Florence, Italy.

In 1955, Mrs. Flanders served as national president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Medical Association. She was a member of the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, president of the Girls Club in Manchester, and President of the Elliot Hospital Associates in Manchester from 1940 to 1942. She was active in many community organizations in Manchester and Warwick, Bermuda, where she and her late husband resided for 35 years.

For the past 13 years she lived in Venice, Fla., and Rye Beach, where she had her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Flanders, as a constant and loyal companion.

Family members include a son, Dr. Robert Flanders Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Englewood, Fla.; a daughter, Mary Flanders Cook and her husband, Bert, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Charles F. Flanders; a daughter, Gretchen Flanders Schleyler; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Hutchens.

FLANDERS - Mary S. Flanders, 98, of 66 South Road, Rye Beach, died Sunday, June 9, 2002. Services will be held at St. Andrew’s By-The-Sea, Church Road, Rye Beach, on Sunday, June 23, 2002, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Please omit flowers. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to Elliot Hospital, 1 Elliot Way, Manchester, NH 03103; or to a charity of one’s choice. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Jean Milanese

PORTSMOUTH - Jean Milanese, 87, formerly of 20 Islington St., passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

Born Londa Dal-Lero, Sept. 29, 1914, in Portsmouth, the daughter of Alfredo and Elvira Francesca (Baldini) Dal-Lero, she was known to her family and friends as Jean. She married Richard Milanese of Connecticut in 1932 and together they made their home in Worcester, Mass. Mrs. Milanese worked for Jay’s Five and Dime in Worcester before retiring to be with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard.

She is survived by her nieces, Louise Belmont, Kim Knox, Diane Whitley, Marcia Beauchmin, Jean Bruce; a nephew, Gary Dallero; and several grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Norma Langley, Emma Linchey, Sara Ewer and Lena Bruce; and two brothers, Delmo and Oberdan Dallero.

MILANESE - Jean Milanese, 87, formerly of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died June 8, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Friday at 11 a.m. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Hampshire, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Thomas B. Connarton Jr.

YORK, Maine - Thomas B. Connarton Jr., 62, of 5 Gross Ave., died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his residence.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1940, in Cambridge, Mass., a son of Thomas B. Sr. and Sadie Connarton.

He was a firefighter with the city of Cambridge for more than 30 years. He had also worked for Cambridge Chemical Exterminator Company.

He had formerly resided in Tewksbury and Cambridge, Mass., moving to York in 1990, and had worked part-time at the Union Bluff Hotel in York Beach.

He was a communicant of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury and a member of the Elks Club in Cambridge and Stoneham, Mass.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carol (Phillips) Connarton, who died in 1997.

Survivors include his son, Thomas B. Connarton III and his fiancée, Jennifer Theos, of Haverhill, Mass.; stepson Steven Fahey and his wife, Meredith, of Tewksbury, Mass.; stepdaughter Mrs. Richard (Karen) Mercier of Dracut, Mass.; two brothers, John Connarton of Waltham, Mass., and Joseph Connarton of Cambridge, Mass.; and four grandchildren. emorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Hampshire, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

CONNARTON - Thomas B. Connarton Jr., 62, of Gross Avenue, York, Maine, died Monday, June 10, 2002, in York. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Tewksbury Cemetery, Tewksbury, Mass. Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Beach Fire Dept., P.O. Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910.

Carolyn A. Anderson

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Carolyn A. Anderson, 67, of 5 Harding Way,

formerly of Idlewood Lane, Kittery, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1935, in Dover, N.H., a daughter of George H. and Hazel (Lewis) Blaisdell. She attended Dover High School and received her diploma in 1989 from the Marshwood Adult Education Program.

She had worked as an assembler and supervisor at Watts Fluid Power in Kittery for 20 years. She also authored the column "Sweet Memories" in Foster’s Daily Democrat from 1982 to 1985.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #6 of Portsmouth, N.H.

She enjoyed cooking, cross-stitching, knitting and spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald James Anderson, in 1999.

Survivors include one son, George Drew of York; three daughters, Karen Miller of Kennebunk, Lauren Clark of Wells, and Jennifer McFarland of York; one sister, Shirley Calvert of Portsmouth, N.H.; two stepchildren, James Anderson of Vernon, Conn., and Martha Brullotte of Portsmouth, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

ANDERSON - Carolyn A. Anderson, 67, of 5 Harding Way, Kennebunk, Maine, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Kennebunk. A funeral service will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the First Parish Church of York, York Street, York, Maine. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Services by the American Legion Auxiliary will be at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Parish Church, for Pilgrim Lodge Camp scholarships, 180 York St., York, ME 03909.

Hugh Coyle

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Hugh "Scotty" Coyle, 74, of 928 South St., were held on Wednesday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. James Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. Agapit H. Jean Jr., rector, was celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Eric Delisle, deacon. A reading was given by Sister Florence Dorey. Presentation of the Gifts was made by grandchildren Melissa Lowry and Wayne Coyle. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Theresa Hickey and Jane Milette. Organist was Jean Goss, and Heather Weller was soloist. An honor guard was formed by the St. Mary’s Assembly Color Corps Honor Guard, which included Frank Sheehan, Bob LaFleur, Paul E. Busque, Graham Kent, Richard Scelza Jr. and Jim McLaughlin.

In attendance were communicants of the church and representatives from St. Mary’s Assembly, Knights of Columbus.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Jean and the Rev. Delisle.

An honor guard was formed at the cemetery by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division (LI), Fort Drum, N.Y., which included Sgt. Bryan Q. Rosales and Pfc. Frank Fosdiek.

Taps was sounded, and the American flag that draped the casket was folded by Sgt. Rosales and Pfc. Fosdiek and presented to Sgt. 1st Class Coyle’s son, Daniel Coyle, by Sgt. Rosales. Bearers were Roger Shepard, John Bost, Jim Trefethen, Tom McCoomb, Paul Smith and Arthur Downs.

An honor guard was formed at the funeral home Tuesday evening by St. Mary’s Assembly Color Corps Honor Guard to stand post at the casket, including William J. Greener, Grand Knight; Fred Robbins, Tom Lowry, Robert LaFleur, Frank Sheehan, Stan Nice, Mark Larrivee, Edward Huntress and Paul Busque.

Walter E. Brooks

KITTERY, Maine - Walter E. Brooks, 78, of Moore Street, died June 12, 2002, in Kittery. Born in Castle Hill, Maine, on Nov. 7, 1923, he was a son of Simon W. and Bessie (Clark) Brooks. He attended and graduated from local schools. He furthered his education in Worcester, Mass., attaining a business degree.

After school, he served his country during World War II in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, he met his first wife, Evelyn (Berry) Brooks, and moved to mid-Maine, where they started their family. He and his family moved to the Kittery area in the mid-1950s.

He was employed in the theatre business for more than 50 years, first by EM Loews Theatres, operating the Civic and the Cinema theatres in downtown Portsmouth for more than 30 years. He managed the Hampton Cinemas for five more years. He then moved to the Strand Theatre in Dover, working for the Spinelli Theatre Company for more than 20 years, just recently retiring.

He was an avid gardener of flowers, strawberries, raspberries and many other fruits and vegetables.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Alice (Piper) Brooks of Kittery; his daughters, Susan Lingard of Kittery, Janet Jones and her husband, Carl, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Rebecca Brooks of Kittery; his son, Vernon and his wife, Denise Brooks, of Eliot; his stepson, Kenneth and his wife, Nancy Schreiter, of Rochester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister, Edith and her husband, Les Castor, of Keene, N.H.; and a brother, Hugh and his wife, Anne Brooks, of Wilmington, N.C.

He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Evelyn (Berry) Brooks.

BROOKS - Walter E. Brooks, 78, of Moore Street, Kittery, Maine, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Kittery. Friends and family are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home at 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, with a committal service following in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, Maine. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Barbara D. McComish

SEABROOK - Barbara D. McComish, 75, of 165 Tilton Street, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., October 11, 1926 the daughter of the late Albert D. and Winifred F. (Merchant) Fielden.

Mrs. McComish was a graduate of the Edward F. Searles High School in Methuen, Mass., with the class of 1945 and from the MacIntosh Business School in Lawrence.

She worked as a clerk for 15 years at the former Glover’s Pharmacy in Lawrence. She was a former member of the First Calvary Baptist Church in Lawrence.

Mrs. McComish resided here since 1963 coming from Methuen.

She was the wife of Alexander B. McComish for 51 years.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a stepson, John DeSimone and his wife, Sheila, of Plaistow; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; one aunt, Eva Merchant; and three cousins.

McCOMISH - Barbara D. McComish, 75, of 165 Tilton St., Seabrook Beach, died June 13, 2002. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home, Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, Mass.

Carolyn Mary Cox

PENN VALLEY, Calif. - Carolyn Mary Cox, 79, of Penn Valley, died June 6, 2002, at her home.

Born in Kittery Point, Maine on Jan. 23, 1923, she was the daughter of Robert M. and Eva (Noyes) Silsby. She graduated from Traip Academy.

Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, square dancing and reading.

In addition to her husband of 59 years, Thomas L. Cox of Penn Valley, she is survived by her daughter, Donna Lee Smith of Warrenton, Va.; sons, Thomas D. Cox of Reno and Ronald D. Cox of Penn Valley; brothers, Robert Silsby of Kittery, Joseph Silsby of Dover, N.H., and George Silsby of York, Maine; a sister, Trudy Peveto of Texas; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Beverly Seaward and Bertha Tobey.

Roland J. Roy

ELIOT, Maine - Roland J. Roy, 77, of Surry Lane, died June 16, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Mass.

Born in Pawtucket, R.I., on June 3, 1925, he was a son of Edouard N. and Marie A. (Levecque) Roy and attended local schools.

He proudly served his country as a member of the United Sates Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was employed throughout his life as a general contractor and was a communicant of St. Raphael’s Parish in Kittery.

He is survived by his family, whom he truly loved: his wife of more than 56 years, Jeanne (Lavallee) Roy of Eliot; his daughter, Deborah Roy of East Providence, R.I.; his five sons, Edward Roy of Rehoboth, Mass., Richard Roy of Eliot, Michael Roy of Taunton, Mass., David Roy of Eliot, and James Roy of Eliot; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, whom he especially enjoyed watching grow and spending time with.

ROY - Roland J. Roy, 77, of Surry Lane in Eliot, Maine, died June 16, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Mass. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at St. Raphael Parish. Family and friends are invited to call from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Family Flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
