Dr. Alan Newhouse

LYNN, Mass. - Dr. Alan "Max" Newhouse, DMD, 76, of 2 River Bend Road, York, Maine, and formerly a resident of 683 State St., Portsmouth, N.H., died June 10, 2002, at Union Hospital in Lynn, Mass., following a lengthy illness. His physical deterioration over the past several years had forced him to relocate away from the Seacoast area, often relying on the support of his closest friends to assist him.

He was born in New York, N.Y., on Sept. 2, 1925. He was the eldest grandson of the creator of the mannequin, and heir to that family’s fortune. To the manor born, he opted to leave his secure and very lavish lifestyle to find success on his own. As a young teen-ager he bade his family farewell and pioneered his way into the world.

He earned his undergraduate degree at Tufts University, School of Dentistry. Traveling abroad, he earned his degree in medicine at the University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, the "Paris of the Middle East." Returning Stateside during the 1950s, he moved to Greenwich, Conn., and opened his first practice, where he performed dentistry and facial reconstruction. He quickly established a lucrative and very successful private practice. During his career as a medical doctor, he was affiliated with the surgical department of New York University Bellevue Medical Center, specializing in somato-prostheses. While working in New York he received an honorary appointment to the New York City Police Department Medical and Forensic Team. This appointment often placed him at the scene of New York City’s most notorious crimes. These involvements quickly placed him in the circle of New York’s high society, regularly mixing with that city’s most elite, socializing in the poshest of nightclubs. He was a regular at the Russian

Tea Room, where he mingled with the see-and-be-seen crowd.

He eventually returned to Massachusetts and settled into a private practice in Boston, locating his office alongside the Charles River. From the city, he regularly retreated weekends to the New Hampshire seacoast, enjoying the numerous eating establishments Portsmouth had to offer. Eventually settling in Portsmouth in the late 1970s, he could be seen strolling through the parks and frequenting the local coffee shops. He and his white German shepherd, Czar, quickly became a constant fixture in the greater downtown.

A United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served in the Navy Medical Corps from 1949 to 1951. He was an avid traveler and saw much of the world, truly a modern day Indiana Jones. These trips often revolved around his providing medical assistance to those touched by natural disaster in distressed regions. A weather-related catastrophe brought him to Central America in 1996, where, together with local government and disaster relief agencies, he worked tirelessly saving the lives of thousands from both famine and rampant disease. His own escape from the devastated region was nearly jeopardized due to the raging winds and rising waters that washed the mountainous terrain completely away. He was forced to exit the country on horseback. This would prove to be the last such trip he would make, as his health and physical condition had begun to fail.

For many years, he served as a mercenary under an assumed name; he worked with British officers, specifically assisting the Kurds in Iraq, leading specific platoons into numerous wars, battles and insurrections throughout the Middle East. These involvements generated many contacts for him worldwide; he mixed frequently with royalty and heads of state throughout Europe and the Middle East.

His leap onto the entrepreneurial stage was his development of a liquid soap-like disinfectant, "Arda 21." This product was sought by the United States Department of Defense and widely used by the armed forces during the conflict in the Persian Gulf to fight athlete’s foot. This accomplishment was something he was most proud of.

He was an animated, colorful storyteller with a distinctly dry humor and quick wit. He reveled in his ability to hold court, appreciating the enthusiasm of a captive audience. An epicurean, he enjoyed the creation of numerous Mediterranean dishes. His kahlua cake, a Portsmouth favorite, was enjoyed at many a local home, for birthday and anniversary celebrations.

For many years, he was a loyal master to his faithful companions, both Czar and Royal, his white German shepherds and Mandrake and Pharaoh, his Abyssinians. Those who knew him will never forget this debonair man and will fondly smile when remembering his extremely distinct and very unique manner.
