Phyllis B. Morrison

HAMPTON - Phyllis B. (Hiller) Morrison, widow of Wilfred B. Morrison Sr., of 22 Tuck Road, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

She was born in Boston, Mass., the daughter of the late George and Philomena (Aunzman) Hiller. She was a member of Friends of the Rye Library and was very active with many charitable organizations; she also enjoyed working in her yard.

Survivors include her daughter, Elaine J. Fitch of Nottingham; six sons, Wilfred Morrison Jr. of Farmington, Gary Morrison of Cornstock Park, Mich., the Rev. Donald Morrison of Chandler, Ariz., Terrance Morrison of Goffstown, N.H., Thomas Morrison of Rye, N.H., and Dennis Morrison of Concord, N.H.; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Hilda Kougas of Roxbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

MORRISON - Phyllis B. (Hiller) Morrison, of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, died June 20, 2002. Private services were held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Rye Public Library, 581 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Donna R. Michael

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma - The funeral for Donna R. (Moulton) Michael, 51, of Oklahoma City, was held Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, Pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Epping, N.H., with committal prayers by Rev. Moore.

Candise "Candy" A. Foster

OXNARD, Calif. - Candise "Candy" A. Foster, 43, of Oxnard, passed away at her home on Thursday, May 30, 2002, after a sudden illness.

She was born in Saco, Maine, on Jan. 7, 1959.

As a military child, Candy lived in many places throughout her childhood, her favorite being Guam. After graduating from Crockett High School in 1977, she made her home in Carthage, Texas, where all her children were born. After being a dialysis technician and a reporter for the Panola County Newspaper in Carthage, Candy moved her children to Oxnard in 1989 to be closer to her parents.

Candy is survived by her children, Jessica Ramirez and her son-in-law, Frankie of Virginia Beach, Va., and Kristen Foster and Casey Foster of Oxnard; her parents, Roy and Jeanette Binion of Oxnard; her brothers, Richard Binion of Oxnard, and Wayne Binion and wife, Jelu, of Talco, Texas; her sister, Sandra Skinner and husband, Randy, of Trenton, Texas; grandchildren, Caitlyn and Breanna Ramirez of Virginia Beach, and Jacob Fonseca of Oxnard; grandmother, Irene Thompson of Malibu; aunts, Shirley McGlinchy of Ventura, Joan Langer and husband, Joe, of Chatsworth, and Jean Kasem and husband, Casey, of Beverly Hills; uncle, Tommy Thompson of Reno, Nev.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Edgar I. Seavey

YORK BEACH, Maine - Edgar I. Seavey, 70, of Main Street, died June 22, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born in West Tremont, Maine, on May 9, 1932, the son of Irving and Violet (Standwood) Seavey. He graduated from Fremont High School.

He served in the Army during the Korean War Conflict.

He retired as a painter from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and belonged to the Painter’s Local Labor Union No. 1915. He had also worked for C.F. Witham and Son as a painter for eight years and for the Maine Department of Transportation for nine years.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Boardman-Ellis Post in Cape Neddick.

He is survived by four children, Stephen Seavey of Loxahatchee, Fla., Michael of Lewiston, Maine, Tamara Sargent of Hampden, Maine, and Cheryl Williamson of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Ellis Seavey of Ellsworth, Maine, and Maurice Seavey of West Fremont, Maine; one sister, Edna May of South West Harbor, Maine; his loving companion of many years, Mary Sleeper of York Beach, Maine, and her family; and five grandchildren.

At Mr. Seavey’s request there will be no public services. Memorial donations may be made to York Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, York, Maine.

Frank Crossen

PORTSMOUTH - Frank Crossen, 56, of Portsmouth, died June 22, 2002, at the Tampa (Fla.) Veterans Administration Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 16, 1946, to Francis and Bernice Crossen in Brockton, Mass. He was a medically retired Marine having served his country in the Vietnam War.

In addition to his wife, Kyle Langelier of Portsmouth, he is survived by his son Frank Crossen of Franklin, Mass.; his sister, Nancy Chenelle-Miller of St. Cloud, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements by the Veterans Cremation and Burial Society of Clearwater, Fla.

F. Richard "Ric" Demarais

PORTSMOUTH - F. Richard "Ric" Demarais, 58, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., on March 25, 1944, he was the son of the late Melvin F. and M. Eleanor (Hosford) Demarais. He attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1962. He was an accomplished athlete, achieving All-State and All-American honors at Portsmouth High. He attended the University of Arizona on a baseball scholarship and later signed with the California Angels to play professional baseball.

He worked at his family’s restaurant, Flagstones, for many years before opening E. Richard Ltd., a fashionable men’s clothing store in Portsmouth.

He is survived by Judith Franzoso of Dover, Melanie Demarais of Worcester, Mass., and Stephen Demarais of Hampton; and three nephews, Anthony, Christopher and Michael Franzoso.

DEMARAIS - F. Richard "Ric" Demarais, 58, of Portsmouth, died Monday, June 24, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cross Roads House, 600 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Pauline T. Sandford

PORTSMOUTH - Pauline T. (Hoitt) Sandford, 79, widow of Frederick B. Sandford, of 115 Dennett St., died Monday, June 24, 2002.

She was born in Portsmouth on Nov. 26, 1922, the daughter of the late Ernest Ralph and Madeline (Kavanaugh) Hoitt.

She attended Plymouth State College in Plymouth.

She was formerly employed in the Supply Department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 13 years and was employed for seven years for the IRS in Portsmouth, totaling 20 years of government service.

She was a member of the Rebeccas for more than 50 years, where she was Past Noble Grand, Union Rebeccas #3 and was the current Treasurer; Past President Canton Aux. No. 12; Past Chief Matriarch of Strawbery Banke #3; Past President Assembly of N.H.; Past President Department Association Ladies Aux., Patriarch Militant of N.H.; Past Deputy Grand Matriarch, Grand Encampment.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Dufresne of Kittery, Maine, and Barbara Rothstein of Kittery, Maine; three grandchildren, Debra McNally of Hallowell, Maine, Rebecca Eloi of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and James Albies of Portsmouth; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Conner; and several nieces and nephews.

SANDFORD - Pauline T. (Hoitt) Sandford, 79, of 115 Dennett St., Portsmouth, died Monday, June 24, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with Rebecca services at 5:45 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to: Camp N.E.O.F.A., P.O. Box 101, Liberty, ME 04949.

Phyllis M. (Steere) Martenson

PORTSMOUTH - Phyllis M. (Steere) Martenson, 85, widow of Anders B. Martenson, of 928 South St., and formerly of 384 Lang Road, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

She was born in Manchester on Oct. 26, 1916, a daughter of Curtis Steere and Bertha L. (Heath) Steere Ordway.

She attended schools in Manchester and was a longtime resident of Portsmouth.

She was formerly employed as a waitress for many years in New Hampshire, New Jersey and Florida.

Survivors include nieces Signe Watson McQuate and her husband, Raymond, of Manchester, Charlotte Watson Philbrook and her husband, Robert, of Portsmouth, Ruth Watson Waltz of Rochester, and Dorothy Steere Doyle of Portsmouth; nephews Donald J. Steere of Exeter and Gerald Eaton of Rye; sisters-in-law Polly Martenson Yeaton and Katherine Martenson of Portsmouth; and several other nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and -nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Earl C. Steere; a sister, Lena Steere Watson; and a nephew, John R. Steere.

MARTENSON - Phyllis M. (Steere) Martenson, 85, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Monday, June 24, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Central Cemetery, Central Road, Rye. Friends are invited. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial contributions may be made to: The American Heart Ass’n, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688; or to the Edgewood Centre, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. The J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Joseph Cormier

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Joseph Cormier, who died June 17, 2002, were held June 20, 2002, at the Wilson Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, conducted services. A private funeral will take place at a later time at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Jane Anderson

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Jane Anderson, who died June 19, 2002, were held Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Gail Kindberg, interim pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church, officiated. The Portsmouth, N.H., American Legion Post No. 6 and Ladies Auxiliary conducted a service before the funeral. Taking part in that service were Acting Chaplain Ella Studrance and Auxiliary President Shirley Williams.

Burial will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Gale F. Dow

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Gale F. Dow, 67, died Friday, June 21, 2002, peacefully at home with her three children at her side.

Born Aug. 14, 1934, in Dover, N.H., she was the daughter of the late James and Violet (Sellingham) Keating.

She had resided in Oceanside for 27 years and retired from the city of Oceanside in 1996, following 20 years of employment.

Survivors include sons Charles Dow Jr. of Denver, Colo., and Michael Dow of Temecula; daughter and son-in-law Shari and Marco Gutierrez of Oceanside; and grandchildren Kendra and Connor Gutierrez.

DOW - Gale F. Dow, 67, of Oceanside, Calif., died June 21, 2002. A funeral service for family and personal friends will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dover. The family suggests memorial donations to Tri-City Hospice, 2095 W. Vista Way, #217, Vista, CA 92083.

Joan B. Howe

NORTH HAMPTON - Joan B. Howe, 80, of 168 Lafayette Road, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Orleans, Vt., on May 22, 1922, a daughter of the late Raymond and Armande (Alix) Beauregard.

She was raised in Vermont and had resided in North Hampton since 1961, having moved from Portsmouth. She worked as a sales clerk for both the former Grant’s Department Store and Foye’s Men Shop in Portsmouth.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Council #140 in Portsmouth. She enjoyed letter writing and traveling.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Grace and Norma; and by a brother, Richard.

She was the wife of Arthur R. Howe for 55 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include two brothers, John P. Beauregard of Portsmouth and Robert Beauregard of Eliot, Maine; three sisters, Loretta Goodreau of Portsmouth, Lillian Duchaine of Rye, and Lucille O’Neill of Honesdale, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

HOWE - Joan B. Howe, 80, of 168 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Theresa’s Church, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Willena "Billy" Bragdon

DOVER - Willena "Billy" Bragdon, 95, formerly of 75 Park St., died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing Home of Portsmouth after a period of failing health.

Born June 27, 1906, in Westville, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of Ernest S. and Eva (McIntosh) Hatt.

She was a self-employed dressmaker and designer and was a longtime member of the Dover Baptist Church. She was a member of the John Williams Chapter #53 Order of Eastern Star and also a member of the Dover Area Chapter of Retired Persons and a national member of AARP.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

BRAGDON - Willena "Billy" Bragdon, 95, formerly of 75 Park St., Dover, died Saturday, June 22, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2002, at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, Maine. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.

Angelina P. "Angie" Noto

PORTSMOUTH - Angelina P. "Angie" Noto, 81, died peacefully on June 26, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

Born in Portsmouth on Oct. 11, 1920, she was a daughter of Carmelo and Vincenza (Cacciatore) Noto. She attended Portsmouth schools and enjoyed a life surrounded by her family.

She was predeceased by a brother, Paul Noto; and sisters Antonina Cavalieri, Anna "Tina" Vinciguerra, Rose Martini and Alphonsina Noto.

She is survived by her sister Mary Wheelock of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed.

NOTO - Angelina P. "Angie" Noto, 81, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Walter E. Kelly

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Walter E. Kelly, 76, of Terrace Avenue, Riverside, died Tuesday at Rhode Island Hospital.

He was the husband of Marguerite E. "Maggie" (Hemmer) Kelly.

Born in Boston, a son of the late Myles and Katherine (Hemmer) Kelly, he had lived in Riverside since 1984.

He was a business appraiser for Visual Appraisal Technology Co. in Northboro, Mass., for the last 18 years. Previously, he was a manager for the former New England Telephone, working with the state of New Hampshire for 37 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 79, Manchester, N.H., the Knights of Columbus in Manchester, and the Association of Bell Tel Retirees of Spring Harbor, N.Y.

He was an avid stamp and coin collector.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Michael Kelly in Australia and Timothy Kelly of Andover, Mass.; two daughters, Kathleen Cristo in New Hampshire and Maureen Turmelle of Rochester, N.H.; two stepsons, Stephen and Richard Anderson, both in California; a stepdaughter, Vicki Anderson in Hawaii; two brothers, Joseph Kelly of Manchester, N.H., and Robert Kelly of Durham, N.H.; a sister, Eleanor Streeter of Portsmouth, N.H.; and eight grandchildren.

KELLY - Walter E. Kelly, 76, of Terrace Avenue, Riverside, Rhode Island, died June 25, 2002.

The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday from Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence, R.I., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, R.I.
