Arthur F. Joy

YORK, Maine - Arthur F. Joy, 68, of Cider Hill Road, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at York Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on July 3, 1934, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Emily (Furber) Joy. He attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1952, where he excelled in sports.

He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Navy, from 1953 to 1961, and one tour in the U.S. Coast Guard, on Boone Island off the coast of Maine, from 1961 to 1965.

He was employed for many years with the Laborers Union Local 976 and later with McKenna Tree Service and Chase Tree Service.

Survivors include four children, Linda Kimball of Sanford, Martin Joy of North Berwick, Mark Joy of Sanford, and Roxanne Joy of Sanford; seven grandchildren; a cousin, Peter Joy of Sanford; and several aunts and uncles.

JOY - Arthur F. Joy, 68, of Cider Hill Road, York, Maine, died Sunday, July 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Greenland.

Eva M. Young

EXETER - Eva M. Young, 80, of Deep Meadows, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Portsmouth Hospital after a period of failing health.

She was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Exeter, daughter of the late Albert and Catherine (Flynn) Hanscomb.

She worked for many years making shoes at both the Wise Shoe Co. and Alrose Shoe Co.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Young, who died on March 25, 1980.

She is survived by one son, Robert C. Young of Exeter; four daughters, Loretta Edgerly and Judy Pelczar, both of Newmarket, Sandra Kershaw of Kensington, and Hannah Welch of Exeter; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Hanscomb of East Kingston; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Dusty.

YOUNG - Eva M. Young, 80, of Exeter, died July 8, 2002. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter. Flowers are acceptable, or donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Richard L. Jackson

SUMMERFIELD, Florida - Richard L. Jackson, 77, of Spruce Creek South, died July 8, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Feb. 4, 1925, in Burlington, Vt., he was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was the recipient of two Bronze Stars. He was employed at Howard Bank in Burlington, Vt., from 1942 to 1973; and Bank East, in Claremont, N.H., from 1973 to 1989, where he retired as vice president. He moved from Claremont, N.H. to Summerfield in 1990.

He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Belleview, Fla.

He was an avid bowler and billiard and horseshoe player.

He was a member of the Vermont Jaycees, where he served as local and state president; a member of the American Legion in Claremont, N.H.; and a member of the Spruce Creek South New England Club.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Jackson of Summerfield, he is survived by his sons, Thomas Jackson of Long Beach, Calif., David and wife Joanne Jackson of Granite Bay, Calif., and Mark and wife Alexis Jackson of Randolph, Mass.; his daughters, Carole and husband Christopher Morrill of Newmarket, N.H., and Susan and husband Michael Sievert of Durham, N.H.; his sisters, Ruth LaGrow of Hernando, Fla., and Elizabeth Ray of Essex Junction, Vt.; and 10 grandchildren.

JACKSON - Richard L. Jackson, 77, of Summerfield, Fla., died July 8, 2002. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2002, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Belleview, Fla., by the Rev. James MacLoughlin. Inurnment will occur at Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church, Belleview, FL; or to Hospice of Marion County, P.O. Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478. Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, Lady Lake, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Beverly M. Marcoux

MILTON - Beverly M. Marcoux, 74, of Sam Plummer Road, died Monday morning, July 8, 2002, at home.

Born Oct. 31, 1927, in Rochester, she was a daughter of the late Carlton and Dorothy (Davis) Young. She resided in Milton for many years.

A shoeworker, she had worked at local shoe factories, including Alton Shoe Co. in Farmington and Hubbard Shoe in Rochester.

An avid doll collector, she also enjoyed flower gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Archie Marcoux of Milton; two children, Carol Ann Helie of Milton, and James Marcoux of Rochester; three grandchildren, Michael Helie, Lorraine Murphy and Melody Williams; two stepgrandchildren, Donald Meatty and Michelle Phillippi; several great-grandchildren; three siblings, Lloyd Young of Norristown, Pa., Lila Dione of Rochester, and Betty Sullivan of Alton Bay; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant son, David Marcoux; and two siblings, Ralph Young and Irene Rumrill.

MARCOUX - Beverly M. Marcoux, 74, of Milton, died Monday, July 8, 2002. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Peaslee Funeral Home, 32 Central St., in Farmington. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in West Lebanon, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Your VNA/Hospice, 178 Farmington Road, Rochester, NH 03867.

Bertha E. Perkins>

PORTSMOUTH - Bertha E. (Lowell) Perkins, 90, of Edgewood Centre and formerly of Rye, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., on Jan. 25, 1912, the daughter of Edward M. and Alberta E. (Trumbull) Lowell. She attended school in Methuen, Mass., and was a graduate of Methuen High School in 1929.

She moved to Portsmouth in 1931 and lived in the Portsmouth/Rye area in the following years. She was employed by J. J. Newberry’s, Rival Foods and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She retired from the shipyard as a supervisor of key-punch operators in 1973. She was a former member of Rye Bethany Church and the Eastern Star. She was an accomplished craftsperson who specialized in crewel work and knitting. She took special joy in knitting sweaters for her grandson and great-grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late Irving R. (Ray) Perkins, who died in 1984. She was also predeceased by a brother, Edward T. Lowell.

Survivors include a son, Lowell W. Berry and his wife, Gloria, of Portsmouth; a grandson, Michael L. Berry and his wife, Marjorie Alvord, of Berkeley, Calif; great-grandchildren Ketura (Kacey) Berry and Lowell M. Berry; and two nieces.

PERKINS - Bertha E. (Lowell) Perkins, 90, of Edgewood Centre and formerly of Rye, died Monday, July 8, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted. Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Ronald Hutchings Dowd

WINDSOR, Vt. - Ronald Hutchings Dowd, 68, died July 3, 2002, at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community after a long battle with a rare form of dementia.

He was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Portsmouth, N.H., son of Oliver Henry Dowd and Eleanor Langdon (Haskell).

Raised in Portsmouth, he became a professional percussionist and played in the Manchester, N.H., Symphony; the Wellesley, Mass., Symphony; the North Carolina Symphony; the Goldovsky Opera Company; the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony.

He moved to Woodstock in 1971, where he opened Century Upholstery, started the Woodstock Jazz Quintet, and played with the Keynotes and the Vermont Jazz Ensemble. He enjoyed sharing his love of music through teaching and performing for the children of Woodstock.

He started jogging in the 1980s and enjoyed running in the Covered Bridges Half Marathon and in the 4th of July road race in Windsor.

His family is very grateful for the wonderful care he received at both the Homestead in Woodstock and Cedar Hill in Windsor.

He is survived by two daughters, Amy Dowd Bartholomew and her husband, Richard Jr., of Enosburg Falls, and Catherine M. Dowd of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a son, Peter E. Dowd of Durango, Colo.; a grandson, Noah Taylor Bartholomew of Enosburg Falls; a granddaughter, Emily Jane Bartholomew of Enosburg Falls; a brother, Oliver "Kell" Haskell Dowd of Portsmouth, N.H.; a nephew, Oliver "Buddy" Haskell Dowd Jr.; and a niece, Diana Dowd Werry.

DOWD - Ronald Hutchings Dowd, 68, of Windsor, Vt., died July 3, 2002. His life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. today at the Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock, Vt. The Rev. Charles P. Davignon will officiate. A luncheon will follow the service, at which musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments for an informal jazz jam. There will be no calling hours. Friends who wish may make donations to the WUHS Jazz Band, c/o Woodstock Union High School, Woodstock, VT 05091; or to the Alzheimers Association, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, VT 05601. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock, VT 05091.

George J. Boyko Jr.

SOMERSWORTH - George J. Boyko Jr., 77, died peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2002, in his home, accompanied by his loving wife and daughter.

He was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Palmer, Mass., the son of the late George and Veronica Samek Boyko. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he served as a radioman in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he entered and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1950 to 1954. During this time he formed his own musical band, The Stylists, in which he played the accordion and arranged all the music. In 1954 he moved to Berwick, Maine, where he taught music in local schools. In December 1955 he opened the Dover Music Manor, which he proudly owned and operated until his retirement in June 1988.

The Music Manor became a favorite spot for several generations of teens. He preferred sharing his love and knowledge of music than the accumulation of wealth. At the close of the Music Manor, many adults came in to share stories, say goodbye and look for a piece of store memorabilia.

Retirement didn’t slow him down, and he quickly taught himself portrait painting. He accomplished many beautiful paintings, which he shared with his family and friends. Again, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the art and did so with enthusiasm.

Boating was a favorite pastime, and he enjoyed this hobby at Silver Sands Marina on Lake Winnipesaukee. He was also an aviation enthusiast and continued flight instruction despite his heroic battle with cancer. He lived life to the fullest and could often be heard saying, "I’m having a ball."

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cheryl O’Brien Boyko; one daughter, Lori Boyko Logan and son-in-law Jeff of Milton, Vt.; two beloved aunts, Frances Nowak of Ware, Mass., and Catherine Skowyra of West Warren, Mass.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

BOYKO - George J. Boyko Jr., 77, of Somersworth, died July 8, 2002. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Roberge Funeral Home, 298 High St., Somersworth. A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin’s Church, 120 Maple St. Ext., Somersworth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Dorothy (Rock) Pray

EXETER, N.H. - Dorothy (Rock) Pray, 96, of 2 Webster Ave., died July 8, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, N.H after a brief illness.

Born in Brentwood, on Nov. 30, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Garside) Rock. She resided in Exeter for over 50 years. She grew up and graduated from high school in Amesbury, Mass., Class of 1923.

Active in many civic and fraternal organizations, she joined the Amesbury Grange in 1922 and joined the Exeter Grange in 1949. She belonged to all seven degrees and served as Master, Overseer, Lecturer, Gatekeeper, and Flora. She had also been Master of the East Rockingham Pamona and was home economics chairman for both Subordinate and Pamona Granges. She held the Subordinate Lectures Role since 1957 for a total of 41 years. She was a well-known fixture at all the annual New England Lectures Conferences. She was presented the 1998 Grange Week Appreciation Award, and was N.H. Granger of the year in 1975.

The Exeter Town Report was dedicated to her in 2000. She was employed from 1942-1972 as an office worker at Phillips Exeter Academy. An active member of the Exeter Senior Citizens, she helped deliver meals on wheels and sold taxi tickets to seniors in Exeter for many years. She was very active in church and senior groups, as well as the Rebekahs and the Woman’s Relief Corps Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. She joined the Moses N. Collins Relief Corps #36 of Exeter in 1974 and has been the Corps Treasurer for many years. She served as Treasurer for the State Grange. She was an active member, marching in parades, taking part in the Memorial Services, flag burning ceremonies, and entertaining residents at the N.H. Veterans Home. For 30 years, she was a member of the Kut-Ups. She was active in the "Notes". She was also instrumental in the building of the Rockingham Home Chapel.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland Pray, in 1964.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Roland P. and Elinor Pray of Fairport, N.Y., and Richard E. and Bette Pray of Hampton, N.H.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PRAY - Dorothy (Rock) Pray, 96, of 2 Webster Avenue, Exeter, N.H., died July 8, 2002. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the First Baptist Church, Front Street, Exeter, with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Interment will be at the West Brentwood Cemetery. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter is in charge of arrangements.

William H. Evans

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - William H. Evans, 59, died June 11, 2002, at Sharp Memorial Hospital. His daughter, Kelsey, and her mother, Louisa Evans, were at his side.

He was formerly a Seacoast area resident and had worked at Data General in Portsmouth. Most recently he lived in Portland, Ore.

He was the son of the late William E. Evans of New Hartford, N.Y., and Dorothy Evans Spears of Pawleys Island, S.C.

Besides his daughter, Kelsey Evans of Portland, Ore., other survivors include two sisters, Lindsay Evans Morone of Waltham, Mass., and Lisa Perry of Sherrill, N.Y.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sureya M. Ennabe

CONCORD, N.H. - Sureya M. Ennabe, 67, of Laconia, N.H., died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Genesis ElderCare Pleasant View Nursing Home in Concord.

Sureya was born in Honduras, Central America, and raised by her father, Miguel Ennabe, along with eight other brothers and sisters.

In her early twenties she pursued her dream to come to America. Throughout her life she served her family and was in fact the "pioneer" and catapult for numerous families throughout the United States. The drive and dreams she brought to our country is part of that fabric that makes the U.S. a world leader. Her accomplishments, despite the language barrier, cultural differences, and crime and racial challenges of the 1960’s in Bronx, N.Y., are remarkable.

Sureya was a licensed real estate broker and owned and operated several businesses in N.H., such as the Pine Hill Market in Laconia; the Golden Hen in Hampton, and Tri Service 800 in Portsmouth. In business circles she is known as the survivor.

Sureya is survived by her children, Michael, Sureya and Leila; and six grandchildren.

ENNABE - Sureya M. Ennabe, 67, of Laconia, N.H., died in Concord, N.H. on July 8, 2002. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 South Main St., Concord. Burial will follow at Blossom Hill Cemetery, 207 North State St., Concord. Following Mass, a reception will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott, 70 Constitution Avenue, Concord. The Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
