David M. Kelly

NORTH HAMPTON - Largely attended services for David M. Kelly, 48, of 131 Little River Road, were held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Brent A. Averill, pastor of the New Covenant Church of the Hamptons, officiated.

Words of remembrance were offered by Mr. Kelly’s wife, Kathleen P. Kelly; his son, Bryce E. Kelly; his daughter, Careyann E. Kelly; brother, Jeffrey P. Kelly; sister, Carol S. Kelly-Mowers; and Brian Warbarton.

Burial was private.

Elsie Sheppard

PORTSMOUTH - Elsie "Dickie" (Pike) Sheppard, 84, widow of Thomas Sheppard of 54 Ceres Street, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

She was born in Berlin, N.H., on June 27, 1918, the daughter of William Sewall Pike and Margaret (Conley) Pike and had attended schools in Gorham. During World War II, she was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She sold Avon products for 48 years.

Survivors include her three children, Thomas R. Aylward of Northfield, N.H., Sandra M. Hughes of Petersbury, K.Y., and Timothy K. Sheppard of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lucille Laperle of Berlin; brothers, Harry Pike of Cascade, N.H., William Pike, Robert Pike and Walter Pike, all of Berlin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters Edna Dunham and Mary Sgrulloni and two brothers, Patrick and Ralph Pike.

Mrs. Sheppard will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

SHEPPARD - Elsie "Dickie" (Pike) Sheppard, 84, of 54 Ceres St., Portsmouth, died July 19, 2002. A funeral service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Tuesday 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home, Monday 5 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted.

Iva J. Jackson

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Iva Jane (Patterson) Jackson, 89, of Kingsport, died July 8, 2002, at The Wexford House. She was the widow of Edward F. Jackson Jr.

Born in Springfield, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Charley Thomas and Willie O. (Hammons) Patterson, and the stepdaughter of the late Ida Mae (Fry) Patterson. She grew up in Springfield and Mountain Grove, Mo. She graduated from high school in Springfield and attended Southwest Missouri State College.

She also lived in Amarillo, Texas; Hutchinson, Kan.; St. Louis; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Osage, Ind., before moving to Tennessee in 1991.

She worked as traffic manager for Military Traffic Management Agency when she lived in Hutchinson, St. Louis and Brooklyn.

Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Jackson of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; two daughters, Marian L. Tootle of Kingsport, and Carole R. Dennehy of Marion, Mass.; 13 grandchildren and one stepgrandson, Tamara Snodgrass of Sunray, Texas; Miles Jackson of Richardson, Texas; Karen Tootle of Abingdon, Va., Mark Tootle of Kingsland, Ga.; Adrian Cassady of Kingsport; Lynda Waldron of Palm Harbor, Fla.; Amanda Barnette of Kingsport; Melissa Tootle of Kingsport; Denise Jackson of Cleveland Heights; Keith Jackson of Fresno, Calif.; Michael Dennehy of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; Timothy Dennehy of Fredericksburg, Va.; Patrick Dennehy of Hampton, N.H.; and Cliff Collard of Austin, Texas; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Ray Edward Jackson; and three sisters, Pearl (Patterson) House, Blanche Patterson, and Edith (Patterson) Shannon.

Esther T. Higgins

HAMPTON - Esther T. (Donahoe) Higgins, beloved wife of the late Robert M. Higgins, died July 20, 2002.

She is survived by her children, Robert M. Higgins Jr. and his wife, Lianne, of Methuen, Mass., Kathy T. Stella and her husband, Richard, of Woburn, Mass., Maureen E. Comeiro and her husband, Kenneth, of Woburn, Mass., Rosemary P. McNamara and her husband, Thomas, of Hampton, and Regina M. Higgins of Hampton; her siblings Dr. Thomas Donahoe and his wife, Edith, of West Springfield, Mass., and Claire Mawn of New York; grandchildren Kenneth Jr., Mark and Mary Comeiro, Lori Scalesse, Ann Marie and Scott Stella, and Daniel R., Timothy L. and Kevin J. Higgins; great-grandchild Kailey Scalesse; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings Alice Mahoney, Grace Wall, Mary VanGelder and Helen DeLorey.

HIGGINS - Esther T. (Donahoe) Higgins, of Hampton, formerly of Woburn, Mass., died July 20, 2002. A funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main St., Woburn, Mass., with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St., Woburn. Calling hours are from 4 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Interment will be in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in her memory to a charity one’s choice. Richard D. Jansen

VASS, N.C. - Capt. Richard David Jansen, USMS, of 613 Cottonwood Court, Woodlake Country Club, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home, Fayetteville.

He was born in New York City on Aug. 7, 1927, to the late Caroline Louise Kavanaugh Jansen and Charles Jansen. He was educated in New York City and Garrison, N.Y., until he joined the U.S. Maritime Service early in World War II at the age of 16.

During the war years he served in the Middle East and European theaters. He continued at sea after the war, rising in rank to master mariner at the age of 29. At the time of his retirement in 1989 he was captain of MV Endurance for Sea-Land Corporation. Among his many accomplishments during his shipping years was his contribution to the implementation of the "Computer Aboard Ship" program for Sea-Land. He also participated in the conversion to container shipping pioneered by Sea-Land Corporation.

He moved to Woodlake in 1993, where he served on the board of the property owners association. He was also a member of the Master, Mates and Pilots Union, the Council of American Master Mariners, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Batchelder Jansen of the home; a daughter, Corrie Jansen of San Bernardino, Calif.; a son, Richard D. Jansen Jr. of Mountain Home, Ark.; two brothers, Raymond C. Jansen of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and George Jansen of Warrenton, Va.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two stepchildren, Winston Wu of Beaverton, Ore., and Charlene Wu of Taiwan.

His remains have been donated to the Duke University Udall Parkinson’s Disease Research Center. Memorial donations may be made to the above center at DUMC 3446, Durham, NC 27710; or to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami FL 33136-1494; or to another charity.

Brita M. Gilson

SOMERSWORTH - Brita M. Gilson, 54, of Sherwood Glen, died July 21, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

She was born March 18, 1948, in Manchester, a daughter of the late George and Virginia (Bournival) Treantafel.

She was raised in Raymond and formerly resided in Portsmouth and in Norwich, N.Y. She had resided in Somersworth for the last four years.

She was formerly employed as a sales clerk at Simplex in Newington and as a salesperson at Fernald Lumber in Nottingham. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and working around the house.

She was the widow of David Gilson and was also predeceased by a sister, Dale F. Treantafel; and two brothers, Phillip A. and Ronald P. Treantafel.

She is survived by one daughter, Nicholle Elliott of Rollinsford; one son, Robert T. Elliott of Sarasota, Fla.; two granddaughters; one sister, Virginia O’Brien of Hampton; one brother, George A. Treantafel of Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.

GILSON - Brita M. Gilson, 54, of Somersworth, died July 21, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, On the Common, Raymond. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the funeral home. The Rev. Neil Iverson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Holbrook Cemetery in Candia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Lung Assoc. of New Hampshire, 456 Beech St., P.O. Box 1014, Manchester, NH 03105.

Teresa Vossis

PORTSMOUTH - Teresa (Kapsimalis) Vossis, 82, widow of Charles Vossis, of 928 South St., and formerly of Woodbury Avenue, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

She was born in Clinton, Mass., on June 20, 1920, a daughter of William and Angelina (Panas) Kapsimalis.

She attended Portsmouth schools and was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

She had lived in Salem, Mass., for many years and was proprietor of the Puritan Arms Restaurant. She had been back in Portsmouth for the past 20 years.

She enjoyed knitting and shopping.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary K. Bilodeau of Portsmouth, and Penelope Avery of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Peter Kapsimalis of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

VOSSIS - Teresa (Kapsimalis) Vossis, 82, of 928 South St., and formerly of Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth, died Sunday, July 21, 2002. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Friday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Trisagion services at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Angelo Pappas. Donations in memory of Mrs. Vossis may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., N.H. Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Leo F. Shea

NEW CASTLE - Funeral services for Leo F. "Tunney" Shea, 79, of 31 Shaw Circle, were held July 19, 2002.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Michael Griffin. The first reading was given by John M. Wiswell, and the second reading was by Tiffany Maher. Acolytes were Ed Shea and Frank Robbins. Organist was Marion Arnoldy, and soloist was Mary Leonard. The funeral pall was placed on his casket by his wife, Ellen, and his daughters, Kathleen Wiswell, Lee Maher and Lorri Parrella. The cross was placed on his casket by Terri Russell, and the Bible was placed by Kathleen Wiswell. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by Maj. Jennifer Robison, Jeanne Leonard, Kellie Parrella and Shana Parrella. The eulogies were delivered by Raymond Maher, Julie Mathew and Ed Shea.

Burial was in the family lot in Ocean View Cemetery in New Castle, with the Rev. Griffin conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Paulie Brown, Mary Robbins, Derek Parrella, Tim Noonis, Billy Shea, Chana Robbins, Ralph Woodman and Donald Chamberlain.

In his memory the flag at Portsmouth Country Club was flown at half-staff, and a piece of sod from the club was placed on his grave.

Jasper Paola

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Jasper Paola, 79, of Hanover Street, were held July 17, 2002.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward J. Kelley. Lector was Eileen Foley. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by Rose Risden and Rae Marcello.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. Kelley conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Terry Risden, Adam Risden, William Marcello, Joseph Nigrelli, Stephen Nigrelli and David Paola. Honorary bearers were Judd and Jessica Marcello.

Ernest R. Gregorowicz

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Ernest R. Gregorowicz, 71, who died July 18, 2002, was held Monday, July 22, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Theresa Church in Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was celebrant. Salvatore DeVincenzo was the altar server, offered the readings and delivered the eulogy. Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist, and Marjorie Scully was organist. Among those in attendance was a delegation from the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Hampton, who formed an honor guard outside the church. Pallbearers were Doug Wood, Clint Rand, Bill Connolly, Jerry Mondalto, Dave Bailey and Wayne Lucier. Private burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton, at a later date. Prayers were offered at the funeral home on Sunday by the Rev. Lavigne and the Holy Name Society.

Raymond E. Bliss

SEEKONK, Mass. - Raymond E. Bliss, 72, of Newman Avenue, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Providence, R.I.

He was born in Attleboro on Nov. 20, 1929, a son of the late Henry F. and Nina J. (Gibson) Bliss. He had been a lifelong resident of Seekonk.

He was a graduate of the former East High School (now Tolman High) in Pawtucket, R.I., Class of 1947, and a 1952 graduate of Providence College.

He was a former co-owner and sales manager for Bliss Manufacturing, formerly of Seekonk, now of Pawtucket, before retiring in 2000.

Mr. Bliss was a member of the National Church Goods Association and the Middlebrook Country Club of Rehoboth. He was an avid golfer, saltwater fisherman and a boating enthusiast. He and his wife summered in Westport for many years.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, Barbara H. (Gustafson) Bliss, he is survived by four sons, Richard R. Bliss of Brewster, James H. Bliss of Voluntown, Conn., John P. Bliss of Pawtucket and Brian M. Bliss of Seekonk; three daughters, Karen N. Hadfield of North Hampton, N.H., Kristin A. Marston of Brewster, and Paula B. Bliss of Hillsboro, N.H.; one brother, Francis V. Bliss of Rehoboth; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers William C. and Robert E. Bliss.

BLISS - Raymond E. Bliss, 72, of Newman Avenue, Seekonk, Mass., died July 23, 2002. His funeral will be held at 12 noon on Friday, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Daniel T. Dore, in the Foley-Hathaway Funeral Home, 126 South Main St., Attleboro, Mass. Burial will follow in the family lot in Rehoboth Village Cemetery, in Rehoboth, Mass.

Arnold H. Adams

EXETER - Arnold H. Adams, 80, of Linden Street, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Peabody, Mass., son of the late William J. and Kathryn M. (Daley) Adams. He had been a lifelong resident of Exeter and was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1940.

Following high school, he went to work at Exeter Brass Works. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for three years during World War II.

After the war, he worked as an electrician, mainly with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He retired from the shipyard in 1982.

He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of the Exeter American Legion Post #32 and the Exeter Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverley (Bell) Adams of Exeter; one son, Michael Adams of Exeter; one daughter, Kathy Roach of Exeter; three grandchildren, Ami, Shanne, and Jeff; one great-granddaughter, Karisma; one brother, Donald Adams of Exeter; one sister, Sally Adams of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

ADAMS - Arnold H. Adams, 80, of Exeter, died July 22, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Michael’s Church, Exeter. A reception will follow downstairs in the church, which is Cotter Hall, after the Mass. Burial with military honors is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.

James W. Chapman

HAMPTON - James William Chapman Sr., 65, of 14 Hutchinson Drive, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Beverly, Mass., on Jan. 19, 1937, a son of the late Philip Sears and Florence (Ham) Chapman.

He was a graduate of Beverly High School and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, and a former Little League coach and past president of the Hampton Youth Association.

He was the husband of Barbara (Scott) Chapman.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, Richard Scott Chapman of Dover and James William Chapman Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; two daughters, Janet Lee Chapman of Hampton and Lynda Elizabeth Chapman of Hampton; one grandson, Benjamin Scott Chapman of Dover; one brother, Keith Chapman of Salem, Mass.; and six nieces and nephews.

CHAPMAN - James William Chapman Sr., 65, of Hampton, died Monday, July 22, 2002. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Hampton Youth Association, P.O. Box 81, Hampton, NH 03843; or to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

John P. McCarthy

METHUEN, Mass. - John P. "Jack" McCarthy Jr., 73, formerly of Georgetown and Everett, died July 21, 2002, at The Lahey Clinic. He had been in failing health.

He was a retired Marine Corps captain and a Korean War veteran. He was a lieutenant in the Everett Fire Department and retired in 1983.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Hilda (Barrett) McCarthy, he is survived by his sons, John P. McCarthy III of Berwick, Maine, Michael McCarthy and his wife, Kathy, of Kensington, N.H., Gerald and his fiancée, Kristine Graf, of Everett, Peter McCarthy and his wife, Elizabeth, of Everett, Paul McCarthy and his wife, Wendy, of Haverhill, and Alan McCarthy and his wife, Patti, of Beverly; his daughters, Maureen Wilson and her husband, Michael, of Methuen, and Rosemary Dyer and her husband, Michael, of Ipswich; his brothers, James McCarthy of Delaware, Arthur McCarthy of Taunton, and Paul McCarthy of Bradford; and 16 grandchildren.

McCARTHY - John P. "Jack" McCarthy Jr., 73, of Methuen, Mass., died Sunday, July 21, 2002. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday from the Murphy-O’Hara-Romano Funeral Home, 519 Broadway, Everett, Mass., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Gerald Osterman officiating. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Association of Marian Helpers, Stockbridge, MA 02163-0004.

Elsie Sheppard

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Elsie "Dickie" (Pike) Sheppard, 84, of 54 Ceres St., were held Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of reflection were given by Kristen Hughes and Michael LaLime. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Martindale. Bearers were Mike LaLime, James O’Callaghan, Jack Batson, Marc Loffredo and Vick Ingram.

CUTTER - Azalea B. Cutter, 83, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Friday, May 24, 2002. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2002, in the Kittery Point UCC Congregational Church.

WEBBER - Jo Laurel Webber, 53, of Richmond, Va., and formerly of Kittery, Maine, died March 9, 2002. A graveside service and burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2002, in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Maine. Family and friends will celebrate her life with words of remembrance, prayer and music at the cemetery. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011; or to the Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23226. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Fredrick B. King

EPPING - Fredrick B. King, 73, died July 24, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in Greenville, Maine, on June 20, 1929, the son of Raymond and Ida (Trembley) King.

Mr. King received a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington State Teachers College in Machias, Maine, and a Master of Arts in Education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and served as state president of New Hampshire Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the New England Executive Board and the National Board of Directors, A.S.C.D. He served on the Exeter Health Task Force, the State of N.H. Comprehensive Health Committee as a consultant to the Educational Television Curriculum Board in Durham, and for 10 years he was an instructor at the University of New Hampshire.

Mr. King will best be remembered for his 33 years of dedicated service in public education. He was superintendent of schools, District #54, Skowhegan, Maine, from 1983 to 1984, and assistant superintendent of schools, Windham, Maine, from 1958 to 1962. From 1949 to 1958, he served as elementary supervisor, principal and elementary teacher in several Maine schools. He last served as president of the Better Business Bureau of the Granite State, Concord.

Mr. King was president of St. Joseph’s Parish Council, Epping and Raymond, as well as eucharistic minister. He was also a member of A Thousand Men, Precious Blood Monastery, Manchester.

Mr. King is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mrs. Gemma Jean King of Epping.

KING - Frederick B. King, 73, of Epping, N.H., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, Route 27, Epping. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Precious Blood Monastery, 700 Bridge St., Manchester, NH 03101. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Epping.
