Amelie G. Hedin

YORK, Maine - Amelie "Lee" Guiler Hedin, 81, died at York Hospital on Monday, July 22, 2002, of complications from ovarian cancer.

She was born in San Diego, Calif., and, as the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Robert P. Guiler, she had the opportunity to travel to many Navy ports throughout the world. Mrs. Hedin graduated from the Holton-Arms School, Washington, D.C., in 1938.

In 1945, she married the late Burton L. Hedin. They raised their family in New Canaan, Conn., and retired to York in 1973.

As a member of the Harborside Garden Club of Kittery, she was treasurer for 14 years and parliamentarian of the organization. With her expertise in flowers and gardening, she played a significant role in civic and community contributions, attending numerous district and state conventions. She was also an active member of the Old York Garden Club.

Mrs. Hedin was an avid golfer and a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. She co-chaired the York Ladies Golf Association Tournament for two years and participated in many golfing events. In addition, she was a trustee of the York Public Library.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Cheryl Hedin Bowman and her husband Craig of Summit, N.J., Eric Hedin and his wife Linda Canterbury of Chester, Conn., and York, and Kristina Hedin Goldsmith and her husband Steve of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren, Ian, Katie and Sarah Bowman, Will and Eric Hedin, Cameron and Alison Goldsmith; her sister, Patricia Guiler Adams of Kennebunk; and two nephews, George Bowker of Merrimack, N.H., and Robert Guiler Bowker of Scarborough.

HEDIN - Amelie "Lee" Guiler Hedin of Lindsay Road, York, Maine, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at York Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the First Parish Cemetery, York. A reception will be held at 94 Lindsay Road, York, immediately following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy, The Harborside Garden Club of Kittery or to the Old York Garden Club. Arrangements are by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Barbara Wygant Hawley

DANVILLE, California - Barbara Wygant Hawley (nee Barbara Bourne Wygant), 94, died July 21, 2002.

She was born July 15, 1908, at 51 Austin St., Portsmouth, N.H., the daughter of Katharine Heffenger Wygant of Portsmouth, and Captain Benyaurd Bourne Wygant, USN, of Fort Dodge, Kansas.

Mrs. Hawley attended the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Mass. and the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, R.I.

She was an avid bird watcher and had a large life list. She also had a keen interest in Oriental art and gave lectures to various organizations on the subject. During World War II she worked at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Santa Monica, Calif. and later joined her parents in Chicago where her father was Commandant of the Abbott Hall Naval Midshipman’s School. In Chicago she met her future husband, John F. Hawley of El Paso, Texas. Both of her children were born in El Paso, and shortly thereafter her family moved to Montclair, N.J.

In 1966 she moved back to Calif. to be nearer to her mother and brother Benyaurd B. Wygant Jr., and lived in Claremont, Westwood, Santa Barbara, Laguna Hills, Northridge, and Danville. Wherever she was, she was an active member of the Colonial Dames, and during the Gulf War she served at El Toro Marine Air Station helping families of Marines who were in combat. She was a member of the Christian Science Church most of her life.

Mrs. Hawley is survived by her children, John F. Hawley Jr. of Santa Clara, Calif., and Katharine Hawley Schneider of Northridge, Calif.; her brother, B.B. Wygant Jr.; and five grandchildren. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the National Audubon Society, Attn: Living Tribute, 700 Broadway, New York, NY 10003.

George G. Miller

NORTH HAMPTON - George G. Miller, 76, of 222 Atlantic Ave., died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Jan. 25, 1926, a son of the late Ernest H. and Florence (Foster) Miller. He attended Amesbury High School and was a graduate of Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston with the class of 1949.

During World War II, and halfway through high school, he enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1943 to 1947. After graduation from high school in 1949, he worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad until 1964. Beginning in 1956 he worked part-time as a rural carrier for the North Hampton post office and later was appointed postmaster and served from 1972 until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton, served the town as a volunteer firefighter, was chairman of the School Board and served on the scholarship committee at Winnacunnet High School. He was a charter member of the North Hampton Youth Association and was a Little League baseball coach.

He was a life member of the E.A. Twombly Disabled American Veterans Post in Newburyport, Mass., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8942 of Rye and was a member of the Hampton American Legion Post #35. A Mason, he was a member of Gideon Lodge #84 of Kingston and was affiliated with St. James Lodge #102 F. & A.M. of Hampton. He was also a member of the Kittery Point Yacht Club.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia (McCarthy) Miller, who died in 1985; and two brothers, Ernest Miller and Donald Miller.

Family members include his wife, Betsey McClennen Miller; two sons, Steven Miller and Glenn Miller; and one daughter, Wendy Miller Hume - all of North Hampton; and eight grandchildren.

MILLER - George G. Miller, 76, of 222 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Church of Christ, 295 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Foundation, Alumni Drive, Hampton, NH 03842.

Gertrude H. Renfro

PORTSMOUTH - Gertrude Haze "Trudie" (Rohlfing) Renfro, 89, widow of Atty. Robert R. Renfro, of 188 Jones Ave., died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home .

She was born in Lincoln, Neb., on May 27, 1913, the daughter of Charles John and Emma Margueritte (Banzhof) Rohlfing.

She attended the Bethany Church of Greenland.

She had worked at Schwartz Apparel in Portsmouth and also had worked for her husband as his legal secretary.

She was a member of the Portsmouth Hospital Guild; was a Gray Lady; and was a member of the Secretaries Club and the Portsmouth Yacht Club.

Survivors include three children, Robert R. Renfro Jr. and wife Carolyn of Mount Pleasant, N.C., Shirley J. Norton of Portsmouth, and Donald C. Renfro and wife Mimi of Tokyo, Japan; six grandchildren, Chantelle Norton of New York City, Shevawn Norton of Deer Isle, Maine, Emma Norton of Hamden, Conn., and David Renfro, Danny Renfro and Peter Renfro, all of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Ciara and Aidan Fennelly, both of Hamden, Conn.

James C. Rogers

PORTSMOUTH - James C. Rogers, 91, recently of the Mark H. Wentworth Home, beloved husband of Eleanor (Eames) Rogers, died July 23, 2002, at York Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Cornwall, Conn., on March 5, 1911, the son of Miner P. and Jessie (Cochrane) Rogers. He was a graduate of New Milfod High School in 1929 and of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1933.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1966 as civilian head of quality control.

He raised his family in Kittery, Maine, where he served on the School Board. He and his wife later moved to Eliot, where they made their home for more than 30 years.

After his retirement from the shipyard he became a registered land surveyor, which he thoroughly enjoyed, finally retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the Naval Lodge in Kittery, Maine; Past High Priest of the former Unity Chapter in South Berwick, Maine; a member of Maine Royal Arch Chapter, Past Commander of St. Amand Commandry of Kennebunk, Maine; Knights of Red Cross of Constatine, of Saco, Maine; The Sportsman Alliance of Maine; and Southern Maine Fish and Game. He loved hunting, fishing and, in his younger years, skiing.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of Cornwall, Conn., for nearly 80 years and an associate member of the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery, Maine.

He was a devoted husband and father and always a good neighbor. He especially enjoyed delivering meals on wheels in Kittery and Eliot, Maine.

Survivors, besides his wife, include a devoted daughter and her husband, Priscilla and Jay Boomer of Wells, Maine; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ring and her husband, John, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Lt. James Boomer and his wife, Dr. Nicole McIntire-Boomer, of Chesapeake, Va., Noah Rogers of Richmond, Va., and Dr. Joshua Rogers of Baltimore, Md.; and a great-grandson, John Maxwell Ring.

He was predeceased by his son Dr. John F. Rogers in 1997, and his sister, Esther Rogers Beeman, in 1966.

ROGERS - James C. Rogers, 91, of the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, died July 23, 2002, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2002, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.

RENFRO - Mrs. Gertrude H. "Trudie" (Rohlfing) Renfro, 89, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, died July 21, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Donations in memory of Mrs. Renfro may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Stasia M. Reddy

READING, Mass. - Stasia M. (Sielicki) Reddy, 82, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H. and Newburyport, Mass., died on July 24, 2002, in Winchester Hospital, Winchester, Mass., following a brief illness.

She was born June 15, 1920, in Newburyport, the daughter of Felix and Helen (Koerdalska) Sielicki. She lived most of her life in Portsmouth, and resided with her daughter for the last seven years in Reading.

She was an avid painter of watercolors.

She is survived by her children, Paula M. Chase and her husband Thomas of Reading; grandchildren, John Chase, Emily Chase Coleman, Scott Carey and Steven Carey; son-in-law of Philip Carey of Casco, Maine; her sister-in-law Mary June Reddy of Newburyport; and her cousin Cecelia Sielicki of Newburyport.

She was predeceased by her daughter Cheryl Carey.

REDDY - Stasia M. (Sielicki) Reddy, 82, of Reading, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H. and Newburyport, Mass., died July 24, 2002. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. James Church, Portsmouth, N.H., at a later date. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Stasia’s memory to the Massachusetts Humane Society, 319 Longwood Ave., Roxbury, MA 02118. Herbert H. Newton

YORK, Maine - Herbert H. Newton, 70, of 17 Old Mast Road, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Herbert H. and Loretto (Hubbard) Newton.

He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He worked as a lithographer for the Naval Printing and Publication Services at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He had moved to York from Hicksville, Long Island, in 1981. He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. He was an avid boater and a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club, Navy Yacht Club, Power Squadron and the South Shore Power Squadron of Long Island. He spent his winters in Clearwater, Fla.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Therese E. (Murphy) Newton, who died in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Aline (Donovan) Newton of York; his son, Charles B. Newton of Islip, N.Y.; four daughters, Jude E. Newton of Islip, N.Y., Therese E. DiDiego and her husband Joseph, and Victoria J. Brunning and her husband Thomas, all of Warner Robins, Ga., and Claire E. McNeil and her husband John of East Islip, N.Y; his sister Loretto Dobbins of Wantagh, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

NEWTON - Herbert H. Newton, 70, of Old Mast Road, York, Maine, died July 24, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 29, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, N.H. Visiting hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Daniel W. DeWitt

HAMPTON FALLS - Daniel W. DeWitt, 77, of 36 Brimmer Lane, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at his daughter’s home in Nottingham after a sudden illness.

He was born in Newburyport, Mass., on March 21, 1925, the son of the late Daniel W. and Olive (Adams) DeWitt.

He was a graduate of Newburyport High School and was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific theatre with the U.S. Marine Corps.

After more than 30 years in the construction industry working for Perrini International, George B.H. Macomber and Vappi, he retired in 1980, later taking on the part-time position of building inspector for the town of Hampton Falls. While he was employed with George B.H. Macomber, he was construction superintendent for the development of Wildcat Mountain Ski Resort in Jackson.

He served 11 years as building inspector, a job that began in his home workshop and concluded in an attic office at the Town Hall. He recognized a significant growth in town and provided detailed attention to safety and the enforcement of building codes and zoning codes.

His community spirit, volunteerism and commitment to the town did not end with his term of building inspector. Over the years he served with the Hampton Falls Police Department. He was chairman of the town’s original Solid Waste Study Committee and chairman of the Solid Waste Committee that resulted from the study. He also served as a member and past chairman of the Conservation Commission.

He was a strong proponent of battling the bothersome summer insect population using natural traps rather than chemicals. With this, a project providing swallow-house kits and construction of greenhead boxes took place and continues today.

He moved to Hampton Falls in 1965 from Seabrook and at one time operated the Spruce Manor Motel, now known as Carlyn Estates, on Lafayette Road. He was a member of the National Rifle Association; AARP; the International Brotherhood of Carpenters union, Haverhill, Mass; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth E. (Eaton) Dirsa DeWitt, who died in 1995.

Family members include two daughters, Danielle E. DeWitt of Nottingham and Linda D. Boynton and her husband, James, of Epping; one son, James R. Dirsa and his wife, Barbara, of Nottingham; and three grandchildren, Kim, Robbie and David.

DeWITT - Daniel W. DeWitt, 77, of 36 Brimmer Lane, Hampton Falls, died July 24, 2002. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Seabrook. Alfred R. Hope

KITTERY, Maine - Alfred R. Hope, 82, of Lemont Lane, died unexpectedly July 26, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in on March 29, 1920, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of Alfred and Josephine (Douarin) Hope and attended local schools.

He spent many years operating his own business as a general contractor. He was a member and former deacon of the Acton Congregational Church. He was married to his wife of over 50 years, Barbara ( Kinghorn) Hope until her death a number of years ago. Mr. Hope was a devoted Mason. His over 40 years of unselfish service to Masonry included his current position as Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Maine; membership in the Naval Lodge #184 of Kittery; and Past Master of St. John’s Lodge #51 of South Berwick, Maine. He was a member of the Order of High Priesthood of Maine, Thrice Illustrious Masters of Maine, Past Commanders Association of Maine and Past Officers Association #1 of Maine.

He was also an honorary member of the Masonic Lodge of James Island in South Carolina. Mr. Hope served as Past High Priest of Maine Chapter #73, Past Grand Steward of Grand Chapter of Maine, Past Illustrious Master of Maine Council #7 Saco, Maine, and Past Commander of St. Amand Commandery #20 of Kennebunk, Maine. He was also a former member of the Piscataqua Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by his son, Mark Hope of Acton, Maine; a grandson, Keith Hope of Acton, Maine, and his dear friend and companion, Barbara Hannaford of Kittery. He was predeceased by his wife and a brother, Edward Hope.

HOPE - Alfred R. Hope, 81, of Lemont Lane in Kittery, died July 26, 2002, in York. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Friends and family are invited to call on Monday evening at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m., where a Masonic service will be held starting promptly at 6 p.m. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396. Arrangements are with the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Teresa Vossis

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Teresa (Kapsimalis) Vossis, 82, of 928 South St., and formerly of Woodbury Avenue were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with services held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, in Portsmouth. Father Angelo Pappas, Presbyter, officiated.

In attendance were members of the Church. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth with committal services by Fr. Pappas.

Bearers were Michael Kapsimalis, Bill Bilodeau, Dick Holt, Sean Flanders, Jack Flanders, and Michael Bilodeau.

Wake services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel by Father Pappas.
