Earl T. Bryant

YORK BEACH, Maine - Earl T. Bryant, 81, of 36 Shore Road, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born on March 10, 1921, in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada, the son of George and Edna M. (Lovell) Bryant. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan High School in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Mr. Bryant served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He was employed by New England Telephone for 30 years, retiring in 1977 as assistant state plant manager.

He was a trustee of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and a member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge.

He enjoyed lobstering, woodworking, and was an avid hunter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Freeman Bryant, who died Oct. 6, 1999.

Survivors include one son, Robert W. Bryant and his wife, Judith, of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Donna Shepheard and her husband, Frank, of York Beach; one sister, Jean Steidel of Tustin, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

BRYANT - Earl T. Bryant, 81, of 36 Shore Road, York Beach, Maine, died Aug. 2, 2002, in York. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Heart Health Institute, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Linda L. Soucie

EXETER - Linda L. Soucie, 62, of 35 Hilton Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at her home.

She was born July 19, 1940, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Allie E. (Nelson) Berryman.

Mrs. Soucie lived in Newburyport, Mass., for several years before moving to Exeter.

A homemaker, Mrs. Soucie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed helping anyone in need. She was an avid card player and enjoyed yard sales.

Family members include her husband of 42 years, Lawrence L. Soucie of Exeter; six sons, Scott Soucie, John S. Soucie, Mike R. Soucie, David M. Soucie, Wayne A. Soucie and Christopher T. Soucie, all of Exeter; five grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Berryman of Worcester; one sister, Patricia Owen of Worcester, and several nieces and nephews.

SOUCIE - Linda L. Soucie, 62, of 35 Hilton Ave., Exeter, died Aug. 1, 2002. Services will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, Monday at 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will be private. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Richard F. Jones

PORTSMOUTH - Richard F. Jones, retired Navy gunners mate GC, 78, formerly of Lang Road, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., on April 24, 1924, he was the son of Robert and Katherine Jones and had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1967.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He served in the Pacific Fleet on the USS Higbee, the USS Halsey Powell, the USS Porterfield, the USS Douglas A. Monroe, and the USS Savage. He served in the Atlantic fleet on the USS Hawkins. He was a gunnery instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Gunners Mate School in Washington, D.C.; and the U.S. Naval training centers in Bainbridge, Md., and San Diego, Calif.

He taught at the U.S. Navy Disciplinary Command in Portsmouth from 1966 to 1968, and retired from the Navy at Portsmouth in 1971 with more than 30 years of service to his country. He went on to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, from 1981 to 1995 in the supply department.

Mr. Jones was a former member of the Masons.

His wife, Ima Jo (Curtis) Jones, passed away in 1995.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathi Hatch and her husband, Craig, of Kittery, Maine; two grandsons, Matthew Burnett and Cristopher Burnett, both of Portsmouth; a step-granddaughter, Erica Hatch of Kittery; and one brother, Howard Jones of Tennessee.

JONES - Richard F. Jones, 78, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 1, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Jerry Vincent Gardner

BELMONT, Mass. - Jerry Vincent Gardner, 95, of Belmont, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002.

Jerry was dearly loved by his stepdaughter, Lisa Horwitz, and his grandsons, Yuri Horwitz and Lief Horwitz, of Portsmouth, N.H.

Jerry graduated from M.I.T. in 1929 and was until recently an active alumni member. He was also a lifetime member of the Belmont Lions Club.

Jerry was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Gardner, and will be missed by their children and grandchildren. His wife, Eleanor Gardner, lives in Newton at The Falls.

Jerry was a good and gracious man. He had a twinkle in his eyes and a heart that touched those around him. He was a wonderful and loving grandfather.

Donald Moreau

PORTSMOUTH - Donald Moreau of 40 Bedford Way passed away Thursday, July 29, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

Mr. Moreau and his father, Arthur, owned the Moreau Studio in Portsmouth for many years. Donald also owned the first pawn shop in Portsmouth and started the City Cab Co. For a period of time he was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Survivors include his children, Sylvia Loring and her husband, Steven, of Strafford, Elizabeth Reed of Escanaba, Mich., Jack Moreau and his wife, Linda, of Portsmouth, Donald Moreau Jr. of Denver, and Karen Moreau of Utah; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a niece, Peggy Doiron of Portsmouth, with whom he had lived for the past five years.

He was predeceased by two sons, Donald Moreau and William Arthur Moreau.

At his request, his body was donated to the New England Medical Center School. A memorial service will be held at a later date at his late residence.

Memorials may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Norma (Reed) Glidden

NEW CASTLE - Norma (Reed) Glidden, 84, of 41 Piscataqua St., died at the home of her son and daughter-in-law on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

The daughter of the late Walter W. Reed and Iva F. (Reed) Huntley, she was born in Palermo, Maine, on Oct. 12, 1917. She graduated from Besse High School and Thomas Business College.

She was a member of the New Castle Congregational Church and enjoyed gardening, music and the Boston Celtics basketball games.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl W. Glidden, and a son, Gary E. Glidden.

She is survived by a son, Walter, and his wife, Sandra; a grandson and granddaughter; great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd Reed of Searsport, Maine.

At her request, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Carleton D. Staples

ELIOT, Maine - Carleton D. Staples, 93, of 49 Depot Road died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at his home.

Born on Dec. 1, 1908, he was a son of John W. and Rose H. (Cook) Staples. He attended Eliot schools graduating with the Class of 1929 from Eliot High School. He furthered his education at the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in electrical engineering.

After college he was employed for a short time by AT&T in New York, then moved back to Eliot to work on the family farm for a time. After working on the 1932 farm census he became and inspector for the United States Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division of the Internal Revenue Service, known today as the ATF, a position he held for more than 40 years, retiring in 1973.

He was married to Ruth (Libbey) Staples for more than 60 years, and they lived and raised their family just across the street from where he was born.

Active in his community, Mr. Staples was a trustee for many years of the William Fogg Library and the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association. He served on the Eliot Budget Committee and a number of committees within the Eliot school system. He was also an active member and served on several committees at the First Congregational Church of Eliot. He was a member of the Eliot Lions Club and the Masonic Naval Lodge No. 184 of Kittery.

He was predeceased by his wife.

He is survived by his daughters Mary and her husband, Richard Tessmer, of Gouverneur, N.Y., and Julia and her husband, Martin Kauffman, of Boca Raton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, J. Donald "Pete" Staples.

STAPLES - Carleton D. Staples, 93, of 49 Depot Road in Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 2, 2002, at his home. A funeral will be held on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his memory to the William Fogg Library, Old Road, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Celine B. Lavoie

EXETER - Celine B. Lavoie, 59, of Park Street, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 11, 1943, in Amesbury, Mass., the daughter of Lorenzo and Margaret (Haines) Bellavance.

Formerly of Amesbury, she had resided in Exeter since 1962. She was employed for 18 years in the Exeter School District food service.

She loved antiquing, camping and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter for 37 years.

In addition to her mother of Amesbury, survivors include her husband of 40 years, Philip A. Lavoie of Exeter; three daughters, Mary Eckhardt if Sutton, Vt., Catherine Peterson of Exeter, and Denise Lavoie of Exeter; two sons, Mike Lavoie and Mark Lavoie, both of Dover; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Bellavance of Amesbury.

LAVOIE - Celine B. Lavoie, 59, of Park Street, Exeter, died Aug. 3, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael’s Church, located on the corner of Front and Lincoln streets, Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Alice F. Cote

YORK, Maine - Alice F. Cote, 86, of 62 Lindsay Road, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born on May 11, 1916, in Dover, N.H., the daughter of William H. and Violet (Eldredge) Fuller, and was a graduate of York High School.

She had formerly been a telephone operator for several years for New England Telephone in York Village.

She was a member of First Parish Congregational Church of York and had served as deaconess and was a member of the flower committee and church choir. She was a longtime member of the Olde York Garden Club. She was a member of the Old York Historical Society, the Women’s League and the Tuesday Sewing Group.

She was predeceased by her husband, James J. Cote, who died in 1981, and by her son, Christopher F. Cote, who died in 1990.

Survivors include two sons, James J. Cote Jr. of Provincetown, Mass., and Matthew L. Cote and his wife, Wendy, of Eliot; one daughter, Gabrielle Cote of Boston and York; one brother, Army Reserve Lt. Col. Herbert W. Fuller, and his wife, Muriel, of Accomac, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Teresita Cote of York; and five grandchildren, Hannah, Jessica, Pierce, Michael and Sarah.

COTE - Alice F. Cote, of Lindsay Road, York, Maine, widow of James J. Cote, died Aug. 3, 2002, in York. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to York Hospital Home Health Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Raymond J. Lemire

ROCHESTER - Raymond Joseph Lemire, 59, of 8 Fieldstone Village, died on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Mr. Lemire was born on March 20, 1943, in Central Falls, R.I., the son of the late Henry and Auora Lemire. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

He lived in Rochester for the past 16 years, after moving from Little Rock, Ark. He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He later worked for AT&T Broadband in shipping and receiving. He was a member of the Rochester Elks Lodge 1493, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 7 in Rochester.

In addition to his wife of 40 years, Lillian (Payne) Lemire of Rochester, he is survived by his sons, Donald J. Lemire of Selmer, Tenn., and Douglas D. Lemire of Holton, Mich.; a daughter, Pamela Lemire of Rochester; four grandchildren, Lori Lynn Lemire of Little Rock, Ark., James Andre and Heather Lemire of Holton, Mich., and Ray Ann Lemire of Selmer, Tenn.; his brothers, Robert Lemire of Rumford, R.I., Roland Lemire of Arizona, and George Lemire of Pawtucket, R.I.; his sisters, Irene Lamontane, Doris Gingrass, and Pauline Bertronzinie of Pawtucket, R.I.

Mr. Lemire was predeceased by his sister, Annette Gureau.

LEMIRE - Raymond Joseph Lemire, 59, of 8 Fieldstone Village, Rochester died Aug. 3, 2002. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, at Holy Rosary Church, North Main St., Rochester. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H.

Ralph Moulton

KITTERY, Maine - Mr. Ralph Moulton, 93, a lifelong resident of Kittery, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Oct. 25, 1908, in Kittery, son of the late Everett Lyman and Belle (Twombley) Moulton.

He attended Traip Academy and worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a senior civilian in the administrative department. He retired in 1967. He also served as secretary and treasurer of the Kittery Port Authority for eight years.

He was a member of the Naval Lodge #184 AM&FM of Kittery and the Consistory of New Hampshire. He was also active with the Bulldog Club of Maine.

Mr. Moulton was predeceased by his loving wife, Virginia (Ward) Moulton, who died in 1997.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Slipp; stepson Ward Francillon of Atlanta, Ga; three step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; a niece of Charlton, Mass.; and two very special friends, Thomas and Lorraine Guimond of Kittery.

MOULTON - Mr. Ralph Moulton, 93, of Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 2, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the First Christian Church, Kittery Point. The Rev. Duane Kellogg will conduct the service. An hour of visitation will take place from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. A graveside committal service and burial will follow at First Christian Cemetery. At the family’s request, only family flowers will be accepted. Donations may be made to the First Christian Church, 542 Haley Road, Kittery Point, or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Robert L. Staniels

MANCHESTER - Robert L. Staniels, 67, of Manchester, died Aug. 4, 2002, at the Elliot Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born in Cranston, R.I., on May 22, 1935, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Staniels. He was educated in the Manchester school system and was a graduate of Bishop Bradley High School.

Mr. Staniels was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as director of administrative services for N.H. Catholic Charities until his retirement four years ago.

He was a member of the American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post No. 2. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, Ann (Regan) Staniels of Manchester, he is survived by his daughter, Linda M. Staniels of Stratham; two sons, Brian R. Staniels and Kevin L. Staniels, both of Manchester; his mother, Elizabeth Staniels of Manchester; two grandchildren, Josh and Melissa Staniels; and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Staniels of Hampton.

STANIELS - Robert L. Staniels, 67, of Manchester died Aug. 4, 2002. Calling hours will be at the McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., at the corner of Hanover Street, Manchester, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to N.H. Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 686, 215 Myrtle St., Manchester, NH 03105, or to the American Red Cross, Manchester Chapter, 1800 Elm St., Manchester, NH 03104.
