Robert E. Leslie

ALFRED, Maine - Robert Eugene Leslie, 79, of Keywood Manor, formerly of North Berwick, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in North Berwick on March 5, 1923, a son of John S. and Hattie F. Newhall Leslie.

He graduated from North Berwick High School in 1941 and attended MacIntosh College in Dover, N.H., graduating with a degree in office communications.

Mr. Leslie served in the United States Army Air Corps as a cryptographic technician. He was then employed by Dennett and Craig Funeral Home in Saco and the Gendron Lumber Co.

He was a 52-year member of the Yorkshire Lodge No. 179 AF&AM of North Berwick. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, music, dancing and antique car shows, and will be especially missed by his girlfriend of 15 years, Olive Emery of Kittery.

He is survived by two sons, David of North Berwick, and Donald of Sanford; two daughters, Frances Landry of Acton, and Beverly Aboodi of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Linwood of Rollinsford, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

George Durard

ELIOT, Maine - George "Wilbur" Durard, 91, of Eliot, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, after a brief illness, at SunBridge Rehabilitation Center in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Portsmouth, the son of Jacob M. and Anita V. (Bowles) Durard. He attended Portsmouth schools.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1965. He was also a licensed electrician and worked in that field as well. He served on the Eliot Fire Department for 35 years.

Mr. Durard enjoyed mowing his lawn and using his snowblower in the winter until he became ill at the age of 90. He was an avid golfer well into his 80s and a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club. He also liked crossword puzzles and the Boston Red Sox.

He was active as the past master of the Masonic Naval Lodge No. 184, and served as chaplain for more than 20 years. He also served as trustee of the lodge. He was a member of the following organizations: Saint Amand (commander) No. 20 (Knights Templer in Saco), Maine Royal Arts chapter No. 73 in Kittery, and Maine Council No. 7 of Saco.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 71 years, Marion H. Durard of Eliot; his daughter, Donna Crossland and her husband, Jack, of Rome, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Wendy Crossland of Eliot and Carrie Mineo and her husband, Jimm, of Utica, N.Y.; one great-grandson, Kristopher Jones of Utica; his niece Anita Shea of Eliot; and his grandnephew, Walter Shea Jr. of Panama City, Fla.

Mr. Durard was predeceased by a son, George W. Durard, in 1953; and a sister, Annie Mayers, in 1997.

DURARD - George "Wilbur" Durard, 91, of Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 16, 2002. Visitation will take place at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Eliot Fire Department, State Road, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Joseph O. Rounds

WELLS, Maine - Joseph O. Rounds Sr., 83, of Gendron Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002.

Mr. Rounds was born on April 24, 1919, in Endicott, N.Y., a son of Orrin and Lucy Sheedy Rounds, and attended local schools there.

Mr. Rounds moved to Concord, Mass., in 1957. In the early 1960s he and his family started vacationing in Wells, where he finally retired with his wife Wanda after working for IBM for more than 30 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, who died in 1988.

He is survived by one son, Joseph O. Rounds Jr. of Sanford; three daughters, Judith and her husband, Peter Beaupre, of Wells, Catherine and her husband, Robert Stanley of Pleasanton, Calif., and Patricia and her husband, Robert Irwin, of Carlisle, Mass.; five grandchildren, Gregory Rounds and his wife, Candaee, whom he lived with, of Wells, Daniel Rounds of Oregon, Thomas Rounds of Massachusetts, Kimberley and Jessie Irwin of Massachusetts; a brother, Raymond Rounds and his wife, Ann, of Binghampton, N.Y.; six step-grandchildren, Todd and Mike Stanley of California, Mark, Scott, Pam and Peter Beaupre Jr., all of Massachusetts; and five step-great-grandchildren.

ROUNDS - Joseph O. Rounds Sr., 83, of Gendron Drive, Wells, Maine, died Aug. 15, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Eldridge Road, Wells. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel – Wells.

David H. Baldwin

LOS ANGELES - David "Deyo" H. Baldwin died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Los Angeles from complications brought about by AIDS. He was 46.

David was raised in Waltham, Mass., and Oneonta, N.Y. He graduated from the Loomis School and Bard College with a B.A. in filmmaking. After moving to Los Angeles, however, he became a painter, creating up to his death canvases that reflected themes he loved: his childhood summer home by the ocean, the boulevards of Venice Beach, surfing, old cars, friends and family.

During the last three years of his life Deyo taught art to at-risk teen-agers at North Hills Prep in North Hills, a job he truly loved. His natural ability to connect and empathize with children made him a beloved teacher and respected colleague.

He is survived by his longtime friend, Laura Fujita of Los Angeles; his father, David B. Baldwin of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother, Ben Baldwin and wife, Elizabeth Doucette, of Portsmouth, N.H.; sister, Anita Baldwin, and Rick McAulay of Los Altos Hills; sister, Elizabeth Baldwin of Rochester, N.H.; and six nephews.

Services will be held in Venice Beach and in Kittery Point, Maine, in October.

Nancy L. Hamrick

PORTSMOUTH - Nancy L. Hamrick, 70, of 245 Middle St., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Portsmouth, July 26, 1932, she was the daughter of Harold and Alice (Guiney) Kay and was a lifelong resident here.

She was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

She is survived by two daughters, Sherry Ann Harrington of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kay Marie Buttke of Loudon, Iowa; two sons, Timothy Hamrick of Wasilla, Alaska, and Michael Hamrick of Barrington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Jane Allen of Kittery, Maine; and a brother, John Colliton of Greenland.

She was predeceased by a son, William Hamrick, in 1959.

HAMRICK - Nancy L. Hamrick, 70, of 245 Middle St., Portsmouth, died Aug. 14, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Monday at 10 a.m. Friends are invited and may visit with the family from 8:30 to 9:30 prior to the funeral at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 505 North Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105.

Robert Moffitt

YORK, Maine - A memorial mass for Robert Moffitt, who died Aug. 7, 2002, in St. Petersburg, Fla., was held Friday at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in York. The Rev. Albert Colpitts was celebrant. Military honors were provided by the York American Legion Post No. 56. Cmdr. Peter Paterson and Banbridge Parsons presented the American flag to Mr. Moffitt’s wife.

Burial took place in First Parish Cemetery, York.

The Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian T. Duchaine

RYE - Lillian T. Duchaine, 75, of 311 Wallis Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Burlington, Vt., Dec. 14, 1926, she was the daughter of Raymond and Armanda (Alix) Beauregard and had been a resident here for many years.

She was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Morley Button Co., and retired from the food service program in the Rye school system.

She was a member of St. James Church, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, the Third Friday Club, Senior Friends and Primetime.

The wife of the late Paul E. Duchaine, who died in 1982, she is survived by a son, Steven Duchaine of Aloha, Ore.; a granddaughter, Danielle Duchaine; two sisters, Loretta Goodreau of Portsmouth and Lucille O’Neil of Homesdale, Pa.; two brothers, John Beauregard of Portsmouth and Robert Beauregard of Kittery, Maine; several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Joan Howe, Grace Gintovt and Norma Parisi; and a brother, Richard Beauregard.

DUCHAINE - Lillian T. Duchaine, 75, of 311 Wallis Road, Rye, died Aug. 16, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o the Regional Processing Center, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

D. Morris Lamprey

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for D. Morris Lamprey, 92, of 63 Atlantic Ave., who died Aug. 11, 2002, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor of the Hampton United Methodist Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Carol Seely was soloist. The eulogy was offered by Mr. Lamprey’s grandson, David J. Lamprey Jr.

Private interment was in the Little River Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.

Patricia A. Nickerson

HAMPTON - The funeral for Patricia Ann Nickerson, 53, of 46 Mill Road, who died Aug. 11, 2002, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor officiated. Ellen Pond was organist and pianist. Kathryne Barry was flutist and Kirsten Iltis and Wesley Lawrence were soloists.

Private interment was in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Lawrence.

Nancy L. Hamrick

PORTSMOUTH - Nancy L. Hamrick, 70, of Portsmouth, slipped away quietly on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Portsmouth on July 26, 1932, the daughter of the late Harold and Alice Kay.

Nancy was a devout Catholic who faced many challenges with the Lord at her side and always persevered. She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Nancy had many wonderful friends and was loved by all. She will be truly missed.

She leaves behind her children, Sheery and Glen Harrington, and Tim and Peggy Hamrick of Alaska; Kay Marie and John of Iowa; and Michael and Christine Hamrick of Barrington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Jane Allen of Kittery, Maine; and a brother, John Colliton of Greenland.

She was predeceased by a son, William A. Hamrick; and a brother, William J. Colliton.

James C. Rogers

PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service for James C. Rogers of Portsmouth, who died July 23, 2002, was held on Saturday at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Government Street in Kittery, Maine. The service was officiated by the Rev. Pat Bristow-Carrico. The congregation was led in song by Sue Utoh, and solo performances were performed by David Hollis.

In attendance were many of Mr. Rogers family, friends, previous business associates and representatives of his numerous Masonic organizations. The congregation was invited for a time of refreshment and fellowship in the church Fellowship Hall following the service.

Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Maurice C. "Skip" Pike Jr.

CONCORD - Maurice C. "Skip" Pike Jr., 89, of School Street, Concord, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Concord Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Newburyport, Mass., the son of Maurice C. Pike Sr. and Elizabeth (Currier) Pike. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was one of the founders of New Hampshire Distributors Inc., in 1946, retiring as president in 1978. He was a past member of the American Legion, Rotary Club of Concord, Concord Community Club and Passaconaway Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Thayer) Pike in 1991.

He is survived by one son, Jay J. Pike of Bow; two daughters, Patricia A. Pike and Elizabeth Pike Brookman, both of New York City; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PIKE - Maurice C. Pike Jr., 89, of School Street, Concord, N.H., died Aug. 16, 2002. Memorial calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord. A family memorial service will follow at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CRVNA Hospice Program, 250 Pleasant St., P.O. Box 1797, Concord, NH 03302.

RYE - Walworth Johnson, 87, of Rye Beach, passed away at Concord Hospital, Concord, on Aug. 18, 2002.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., on May 18, 1915, Walworth was the eldest son of Mitchell and Margaret (Walworth) Johnson of Andover, Mass. He attended Phillips Andover, Punchard High School and Bowdoin College.

He was the owner and manager of Johnson Hardware, Inc. of Dover, a director and president of Standard Hardware Distributors, Nashua, a director of Merchants National Bank, Dover, a former City Council member and mayor of Dover, former state senator for Strafford County, a charter member of the Dover Economic Commission, chairman of the Strafford County Regional Planning Commission, and member of S.C.O.R.E. (Service Corps of Retired Executives) where he received the Platinum Leadership Award and an award for 25 years of service.

He enjoyed golf and was a long-time member of the Cocheco Country Club, Dover, the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach, and the Green Valley Country Club, Green Valley, Ariz. He was an avid bridge player, especially duplicate bridge, and he held a life master’s bridge certificate. He was a governor of the New Hampshire Chapter of the Mayflower Society.

He was the beloved husband of Margaret O’Connor Johnson, Rye Beach; the devoted father of Margaret (Johnson) Kelly of Calabasas, Calif., Walworth Johnson Jr. of Dover, and Judith (Johnson) Ballester of Portsmouth; brother of Eleanor DuToit of Winchester, Mass., and Mitchell Johnson of Meredith; grandfather to five grandchildren, Kara Kelly, Christine (Kelly) Temple, Jennifer (Johnson) Madden, Julie (Johnson) Forrest, Nicola Ballester; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Sean Temple.

JOHNSON - Walworth Johnson, 87, of Rye Beach, passed away at Concord Hospital, Concord, on Aug. 18, 2002. Services will be private. Elmer John "Jack" Burnham Jr.

KITTERY, Maine - Elmer John "Jack" Burnham Jr., 73, of Philbrick Road, died Aug. 17, 2002, at his home.

Born in Kittery on March 3, 1929, he was the son of Elmer J. Sr. and Mabel (Williams) Burnham. He attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1946. He furthered his education at Harvard University.

Mr. Burnham served his country as a member of the United States military.

He owned and operated a laundromat in York, Maine for a time. He was active in the Republican Party locally and nationally. He was also an associate member of the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum. He was also a member of the Piscataqua Pioneers.

He was active in the Second Christian Congregational Church of Kittery growing up, and attended the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point.

He is survived by his niece and her husband, Nancy and Marwan Kouki, and their three daughters Karwan, Yasmeen and Nasreen, all of Reading, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Bernice Lobdell.

BURNHAM - Elmer John "Jack" Burnham Jr., 73, of Philbrick Road, Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 17, 2002, at his home. A funeral will be held from the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, with the Rev. Lynes officiating. Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening, Aug. 21, 2002, at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road, Route 1 By-pass, Kittery, Maine from 6 to 8 p.m. Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, 23 Pepperell Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905 or to the Second Christian Congregational Church, 33 Government St., Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Henry Fitzsimmons

ELIOT, Maine - A memorial service for Henry Fitzsimmons of Eliot, who died on Aug. 14, 2002 was held on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002. The Rev. Graham Alvord of Kittery Point, Maine officiated. the Rev. Alvord offered words from the Psalmist and words of remembrance were offered by close friends and family. The service continued with a committal at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, where the Rev. Alvord blessed the grave and offered prayers of committal. Everyone was invited back to his home on Goodwin Road for a time of sharing and refreshment.
