Marion E. Spooner

NEWINGTON - Marion E. (Deselle) Spooner, 90, widow of James H. Spooner Sr., of 29 Airport Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Plymouth on May 18, 1912, the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Tina A. (Nutting) Deselle, and attended Plymouth schools.

As a resident of Greenland for many years, she was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and a member of the Women’s Alliance. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and loved her dog, Suzie-Q.

Survivors include her daughter Eleanor Olson of Newington; son James H. Spooner Jr. of Raymond; son Leon Spooner of Exeter; and daughter Thelma Wajda of Newmarket; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

SPOONER - Marion E. (Deselle) Spooner, 90, of 29 Airport Road, Newington, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, Greenland. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.

Paul Jeffery Spitzer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Paul Jeffery Spitzer, 46, formerly of Salisbury, Mass., died July 27, 2002, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, Treasure Island, Fla.

He was born Aug. 23, 1955, in Malden, Mass., a son of Leonard and Ruth (Hurwitz) Spitzer.

He moved to Florida in 1990 after living most of his adult life in the Salisbury area.

Prior to leaving New England, he owned a handful of gas stations throughout the area. After venturing into his new life in Florida, he worked as a service advisor for Crown Eurocars for nine years in St. Petersburg. He loved traveling to Costa Rica, and did so with many of his friends, sometimes a few times a year. He was a lover of the ocean and the warm climate. His hobbies included boating, motorcycles and bowling. He was first and foremost a car enthusiast.

He is survived by a daughter, Lisanne Rae Spitzer of Exeter, N.H.; a sister, Sheila Lee Hayes of Peabody, Mass.; a brother, Stuart Marshall Spitzer of Lynnfield, Mass.; two nieces; two nephews; and a wide array of loving friends, all of whom loved and cared for him dearly. He will forever be missed, as a piece of our hearts left this world with him.

SPITZER - Paul Jeffery Spitzer, 46, formerly of Salisbury, Mass., died July 27, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Hampton Beach, across from Ron’s Landing Restaurant. Arrangements are by Lisanne Spitzer, 11 Exeter Falls Drive, Exeter.

Joseph H. Drake Jr.

RYE - Joseph H. "Bud" Drake Jr., 84, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on May 2, 1918, the son of the late Joseph H. and Ann C. (Gile) Drake. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1936, and Plymouth Business School, Class of 1938.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the administration department, retiring in 1977 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, the Piscataqua Pioneers, the Dustin Family Association, the Community Council of Senior Citizens, the Wentworth Gardner House Association, AARP and NARFE. He was a volunteer at the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce for 18 years and was also treasurer of the Strawbery Banke Croquet Club.

Survivors include a sister, Frances Goss of Rye; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews and cousins; and longtime friend Malcolm "Uncle Mickey" Austin.

DRAKE - Joseph H. "Bud" Drake Jr., 84, of Rye, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Central Cemetery, Central Road, Rye. There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Community Council of Senior Citizens, 7 Junkins Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to North Congregational Church, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Elizabeth I. Gibson

MANCHESTER - Elizabeth I. (Graham) Gibson, 96, of 198 Pearl St., and formerly of Thornton Street, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Maple Leaf Health Care Center in Manchester. Born in Springfield, Vt., on Oct. 14, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Merton L. and Marion I. (Perkins) Graham. She was a graduate of Springfield High School and the Teacher Training School.

She was formerly a teacher in the Springfield, Vt., school system and had volunteered at Dondero School in Portsmouth for more than 13 years. She was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Descendents, and the National Society of New England Woman. Survivors include two daughters, M. Jean Quinn of Hooksett, and Donna Smothers of Aurora, Ill.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar H. Gibson, on Feb. 2, 1998; and her son, Gordon Harry Gibson, on Aug. 23, 1937.

GIBSON - Elizabeth I. (Graham) Gibson, 96, of 198 Pearl St., Manchester, and formerly of Thornton Street, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with a brief service of remembrance at 5 p.m. Friends are invited. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Monday in Pleasant View Cemetery, Chester, Vt. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Sewall W. Barbour

LYNN, Mass. - Sewall W. Barbour, 77, of 111 Birch St., died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Salem Hospital in Salem, Mass.

He was born in Rockland, Maine, on Jan. 14, 1925, the son of the late George and Queenie (Carson) Barbour. He was formerly employed as a custodian for Goodwill Industries and was formerly an avid bowler.

Survivors include two brothers, Paul Barbour of Kittery, Maine, and Menford Barbour of Bethany, Okla.; one nephew, Fred Barbour of Tulsa, Okla.; and two nieces, Deborah Smith of South Berwick, Maine, and Cheryl Schrengost of Corry, Pa.

BARBOUR - Sewall W. Barbour, 77, of 111 Birch St., Lynn, Mass., died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Sagamore Cemetery, South Street, Portsmouth. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Warren Anthony Aliberti

PORTSMOUTH - Warren Anthony Aliberti, 81, of Holly Lane, died peacefully, with his family by his side, at Portsmouth Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002.

He was born March 9, 1921, in Portland, Maine, a son of Antonio and Rosina Aliberti of Siano, Italy.

He was a 1939 graduate of Portland High School. He attended Farmington Teacher’s College for two years, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medical technician in the European Theater of Operations. Upon his return, he attended Boston University, where he received a B.S. degree. He received an M.A. degree from Columbia University. On June 26, 1948, he married Amelia (Millie) DeMauro of South Portland, Maine. They moved to Madison, Maine, where he taught American history and coached football and basketball at the high school. In 1956 he moved to Bath, Maine, and taught American history and coached football and basketball at Morse High School. In 1961 he moved to Portsmouth, where he taught American history and coached football and basketball at Portsmouth High School until retiring in 1986. In Madison, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Lions Club. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Portsmouth Country Club. He enjoyed bowling and watching football

, basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica. Later in life he learned how to play the organ and enjoyed that very much.

Besides his wife, Amelia Aliberti, he is survived by three daughters, Rosemary Smart of Frederick, Md., Jane Borgerson of Portsmouth, and Judith Bilodeau of Bow; a sister, Viola Palmacci of Yarmouth, Maine; a brother, Henry Aliberti of Portland, Maine; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many good friends. He will be missed by all.

ALIBERTI - Warren Anthony Aliberti, 81, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 22, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2002, at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2002, at St. James Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Janice Hoskinson

WALTERS, Okla. - Janice (Lyons) Hoskinson, 56, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died in Lawton on Aug. 21, 2002.

She grew up in the Portland, Maine, area. She married Lee Eric Davis Sr., and they raised three children, Lee, Erica and Melody. She later married Charles Wayne Hoskinson on Nov. 4, 1977, in Portsmouth, N.H. They eventually moved with the Army to Fort Sill and made their home in Lawton in 1981 and then moved to Walters in 1982.She loved to do handcrafts, gardening, and, among other things, fishing and bowling. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Marie and Henry Joyce of Eliot, Maine; her husband, Charles Hoskinson of Walters; her son, Lee Eric Davis Jr.; her daughters, Erica Lee Tondre of Temple, and Melody Joyce Butler of Tallahassee, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

O’SULLIVAN a- Irene E. (Michaud) O’Sullivan, 94, a resident of Plymouth, Mass., and formerly of Chelmsford, Mass., died Aug. 22, 2002. A funeral will be held at 12 p.m. Monday at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford, with a funeral Mass to be offered at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Chelmsford. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell, Mass. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Thomas Gallagher Scholarship Fund, Bank North, Drum Hill Road, Chelmsford, MA 01824.

Kenneth W. Teague

PORTSMOUTH - Kenneth Warren Teague, 56, of Portsmouth, died at his home Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002.

He was born in Portsmouth on April 7, 1946, the son of Paul F. and Gloria M. (Ceely) Teague. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1964, and New England College in Henniker in 1970. He earned a master’s degree in pharmacology from Northeastern University in Boston.

He was recently employed by the state of New Hampshire as a toxicologist, after having worked several years at the Path Lab in Portsmouth. Ken was an accomplished pianist; although his interests later gave way to fishing, and he spent many peaceful days on area lakes and streams.

Besides his parents and his fiancée, Ellen Eckerson, he is survived by two daughters, Jenne Teague and Karen Teague of Rochester, N.Y.; his sister, Paula Roberge and her husband John of Portsmouth; his niece, Diana Drew and her family of Barrington; his nephew, Darrin Sargent and his family of South Berwick, Maine; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

TEAGUE - Kenneth Warren Teague, 56, of Portsmouth, died Aug. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth, at 11 a.m. Monday. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Ken’s family has requested family flowers only. If you wish, donations to the North Church Memorial Fund, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801 would be most appreciated. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel.

Ronald J. McNeil

RYE - Ronald J. McNeil, 55, of Rye, passed away at his home after a long illness.

He was born June 29, 1947, in Portsmouth, the son of John and Priscilla (LaBranche) McNeil. Ronald married Linda Cardinal in Rochester on Sept. 27, 1969.

He was a 1965 graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester, a 1973 graduate of Concord Technical Institute, and a 1975 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.

In 1966, Ronald was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1966 through 1972. Since 1984, he was employed at BAE Systems, formerly Sanders, a Lockheed Martin company.

Ronald was co-owner of Stef’s Ace Hardware in Portsmouth. He opened the store with his daughter, Stefanie, in January 1999.

For the last 14 years, Ronald was an active member of the Portsmouth Power Squadron, where he held the title of educational officer for the last six years. He was also a member of the Rye Lions Club, serving in the position of King Lion in 1990-1991.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Stefanie and Sheila; his brother, Paul McNeil and his wife Suzanne of Barrington; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, mother, and a sister, Louise.

McNEIL - Ronald J. McNeil, 55, of Rye, passed away at his home on Aug. 22, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Seacoast Hospice of Exeter, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

M. Janet Kimball

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - M. Janet Kimball, 79, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.

Janet was born to James Marsden and Edna (McCrea) Lindsay-Alexander on June 11, 1923, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Janet grew up in British Columbia, attending school in Vancouver, where she graduated from high school and attended Pitt Business School.

She married Earle W. Kimball in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 6, 1952. Earle and Janet established and operated JEDPR Trailer Center in Portsmouth, N.H., for many years.

Janet was an accomplished cribbage player and, in her youth, a championship-caliber swimmer. She was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi and loved to read.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughters, Page E. Gunter and her husband Paul of Olalla, and Dawn E. Kimball and her companion Mark Stocks of Agua Dulce, Calif.; a son, Rod A. Kimball and his wife Patti of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lindsay Alexander of Kelowna, British Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials in Janet’s name be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. There will be a private family gathering at a later date.

Caroline O. Seacord

EDGARTOWN, Mass. - Caroline Osborn Seacord, 94, died peacefully in her sleep, on July 21, 2002, at the Windemere Nursing Home, Martha’s Vineyard. She had been a resident at Windemere for four months.

Carrie, the daughter of Walter and Marion Warren Osborn, was born Feb. 7, 1908, in Edgartown (during a blizzard) in the ancestral home built by her great-great-grandfather, Timothy Coffin.

She lived a long and active life. Her passions were music, patriotism and genealogy. She played piano for silent movies as a teen-ager and later became the organist and choir director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Edgartown, serving in that role for 47 years. She was a member of the DAR for 41 years, serving as Regent three times and representing the Island at three constitutional conventions in Washington, D.C. She was well-known for relentlessly admonishing Island shopkeepers to fly the American flag.

She was an avid swimmer and received an award from President Jimmy Carter for swimming 50 miles - during a six-month time span - at the age of 71. She also collected beach glass and stones, which she fashioned into jewelry. She was a fine seamstress and knitter, and excelled at duplicate bridge.

Her first marriage, to Alton Tilton, ended in divorce; her second marriage, to William Reynolds, lasted many years, until his death. Eighteen years later she married Frederick Seacord, a deacon at St. Andrews, and they spent their 80s together, until Mr. Seacord’s death.

Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Ward of Roanoke, Va.; four children, Carolyn Tilton Medgyesy and her husband John of Attleboro and Sengekontaket, David Butler Tilton and his wife Carol of Rye, N.H., and Menemsha, Mass., Stephen W. Tilton and his wife Roberta of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Saunderstown, R.I., and W. Philip Reynolds of Edgartown; 11 grandchildren and their families, John Medgyesy of Attleboro, Susan M. Grandin of Chestnut Hill, David Tilton Jr. of Newmarket, Desiree Tilton of Dover, Daniel Tilton of Bow Lake, Deidre Tilton Sanborn of Hampden, Maine, Dawn Tilton Tarmey of Epping, Stephanie Tilton of Edgartown, Faith T. Schmidt of Minnesota, Jennifer Tilton of Rhode Island, and Philip O. Reynolds of Edgartown; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She will be lovingly remembered by her extensive family for her indomitable Yankee spirit, her exuberance for life and for her love and kindness toward all.

David D. Pridham

MADBURY - David D. Pridham, 59, husband of Julie Goulet, of Madbury, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born in Portsmouth on May 24, 1943, the son of the late Gordon and Niola (Noyes) Pridham. David attended Rye schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1962.

David served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He owned and operated the Lemon Trucking Co. in Madbury.

Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Darayl Pridham of Pensacola, Fla., and Daniel Pridham of Tempe, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Jenifer Hall of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Sydney Pridham of Pensacola; a stepgrandson, Davon Snowden of Portsmouth; two brothers, Frederick Pridham of Brookfield, N.H., and Joseph Mannix of Rye; three sisters, Grace Couch of Dover, Dorothy Soucy of Stratham, and Wanita Graham of Clearwater, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Gregory Pridham.

PRIDHAM - David D. Pridham, 59, of Madbury, died Aug. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., with burial following at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Nashua. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Irene E. O’Sullivan

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Irene E. (Michaud) O’Sullivan, 84, a resident of Plymouth for the past 13 years, formerly of Chelmsford, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Bay Path Nursing Home in Duxbury.

Born in Lowell on Dec. 7, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Gaspard and Emma (Houle) Michaud. Mrs. O’Sullivan was a graduate of St. Joseph Academy in Lowell and Lowell Commercial College. She was employed at Travelers Insurance Co. in Lowell until her retirement and had also worked at B&M Railroad.

She was a member of the Chelmsford Senior Citizens, Plymouth Golden Ages, and the Westland Community Club in Chelmsford. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Plymouth and also St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford where she was a member of the Sodality.

Mrs. O’Sullivan was predeceased by her husband, Timothy F. O’Sullivan.

She is survived by one daughter, Rita T. Connell and her husband Bruce of Plymouth; three grandchildren, Donna Salinger of Dover, N.H., Laurie Steinberg of Rye, N.H., and Timothy Connell of Kingston, N.H.; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
