Brett G. Sylvester

NEWMARKET - Brett G. Sylvester, 49, of Main Street, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, of a massive heart attack at his home.

Born on March 24, 1953, in Plainfield, N.J., he was the son of Geatal L. and Antoinette (Cervone) Sylvester. He graduated from Bradford College and Emerson College. He worked as a purchasing agent at the Library of Acquisitions at the University of New Hampshire in Durham for the past 20 years.

He leaves one brother, Carmine J. Sylvester of Newark, N.J.

SYLVESTER - Brett G. Sylvester, 49, of Main Street, Newmarket, died Aug. 23, 2002. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the family burial site in Plainfield, N.J., on Friday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be scheduled at the University of New Hampshire at a later date. AFCS - Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services Inc. of Boscawen, N.H., is in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen M. Lutz

PORTSMOUTH - Ellen M. Lutz, 58, of 39 Georges Terrace, died Tuesday, Aug., 27, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long period of failing health.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 25, 1943, she was the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Missell) Wilson.

She was employed at the former Pease Air Force Base Exchange and retired from the Service Credit Union.

She was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association Auxiliary and St. James Church.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Joseph Lutz; her daughter, Theresa Tillman and her husband, Richard, of Tacoma, Wash.; her son, Tony Lutz of Rochester; her granddaughter, Jennifer, and grandson, Phillip, both of Tacoma, Wash.; her sister, Bernice Jones of Florida; three brothers, Bob Wilson of New York, Jackie Wilson of Arizona, and Butch Wilson of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

LUTZ - Ellen M. Lutz, 58, of 39 Georges Terrace, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Visiting hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Central Processing Center, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688; or to the Diabetes Association of New Hampshire, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101; or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Rockville, MD 20849.

Elizabeth G. Tate

ELIOT, Maine - Elizabeth G. Tate, 92, died peacefully in her sleep at the Langdon Place in Dover, N.H., on Aug. 24, 2002.

Born Sept. 10, 1909, in Bridgewater, Mass., she was the daughter of Frederick E. and Ethel Stacy Goodwin. She was the wife of the late John M. Tate.

She graduated from Dover High School in 1928 and was a graduate of Keene State College, Class of 1930. She taught in Maine and New Hampshire schools, retiring in 1964. She was a member of the East Andover Congregational Church in East Andover, and the Eliot Historical Society.

Survivors include a son, David S. Thompson; a daughter, Nancy T. Hardy; a brother, Richard N. Goodwin; a grandson, Charles S. Hardy; and a granddaughter, Jan L. McKenney, all of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews.

TATE - Elizabeth G. Tate, 92, of Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 24, 2002. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Robert A. Baird

DALLAS, Texas - Robert A. Baird, 64, died Aug. 20, 2002, at Ashley Court in Turtle Creek.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 9, 1937. His childhood years were spent growing up in Portsmouth, where even he admitted spending too much time at the movies. He graduated in 1960 from the University of New Hampshire and enlisted in the United States Army, being stationed in Seoul, Korea, where he received a direct commission.

His love for life and family will always be remembered. He loved traveling, especially to New York, which he considered a second home. He was active in his community and served on the board of directors of the Camp Fire Girls. He was a kind, gentle man, absolutely adored by all who knew him.

He contracted myelogenous leukemia at age 52 and was given six months to live. His love of life and strong will kept him active for 13 years until suffering a major stroke on March 30, 2002.

Services were held in Nocona. His memory can be kept alive through donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1390 Market St., Suite 1200, San Francisco, CA 94102.

He leaves his companion of 18 years, John McCall, of Dallas; daughter Katharine Baird and son-in-law Michael Halsted of San Francisco; sisters Patricia Noble of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Janice Daring of Shapleigh, Maine; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Grey Baird, and Margaret P. Baird.

Margaret L’Engle Chase

HAMPTON BEACH - Margaret L’Engle Chase, 93, of 1026 Ocean Boulevard, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Exeter Hospital. She was the widow of Donald A. Chase.

She grew up in Asheville, N.C., and attended Converse College in South Carolina. She lived in Shirley Center, Mass.; Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Exeter and Hampton.

She was a modest but vital woman who always involved herself with her communities. Her organizational memberships included the Exeter Hospital Guild, the Exeter Historical Society, and the Exeter Episcopal Church Women. Among many other accomplishments, she will be remembered for organizing the Exeter Christ Church rummage sale, hosting gatherings for the church women at her home in Hampton, and doing volunteer library work wherever she lived. She was an avid swimmer, a devoted golfer, a competitive bridge player, and an amateur water-color artist. She continued these activities to the end of her life.

She had a sweet and subtly charismatic personality. She gathered to her many wonderful friends of all ages who enjoyed the pleasure of her company and were inspired by her indomitable spirit. She led a full, rich life, with no regrets, and passed suddenly from an alert, living presence into a final, brief coma, while at home, in the company of friends and family. She will be much missed in this world.

She is survived by her sister, Sister Madeleine L’Engle Theoktisto; her daughter, Jaqueline L’Engle Chase; her son, Aquila Chase; and her grandson, Dylan Aquila Horodko.

CHASE - Margaret L’Engle Chase, 93, of 1026 Ocean Boulevard, Hampton, died Aug. 25, 2002. There will be a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2002, at Christ Church, 43 Pine St., Exeter. She requested that, instead of flowers, contributions be made to Christ Church. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2002, at The Great Room of Riverwoods, 7 Riverwood Drive, Exeter. Arrangements are under the direction of The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Lawrence Paul Smith

KITTERY, Maine - Lawrence "Larry" Paul Smith, 51, of Manson Ave., died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at his home. Born in Rochester, N.H., on Oct. 2, 1950, he was a son of Harry Steve and Margaret (Williams) Dube.

He attended schools in Eliot, Maine, graduating from Marshwood High School. He furthered his education, obtaining a degree in accounting.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army for more than 10 years and the Army National Guard for 10 years. He was a communicant of St. Raphael Parish in Kittery. He was truly dedicated to his country and the veterans who served in the military. He volunteered his time at the Disabled American Veterans office in Manchester and was the adjutant of the DAV in Newington. He was also a member of the Frank E. Booma American Legion Post #6 of Portsmouth, as well as a VFW post member.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Dube of Rochester; his son, Christopher Smith of Leeds, Maine; his sisters, Carol Ann Ellis and Linda Follansbee; and his fiancée, Carol Ann White of Portsmouth. is country and the veterans who served in the military. SMITH - Lawrence "Larry" Paul Smith, 51, of Manson Avenue in Kittery, Maine, died Monday Aug. 26, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his memory to the Disabled American Veterans, 19 River Road, Newington, NH 03801. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Janice Barden

WINDHAM, Maine - Janice (Caswell) Barden, 36, of Anglers Road and formerly of Newmarket, N.H., died Aug. 27, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 29, 1956, in Exeter, she was raised in Newmarket and was a 1983 graduate of Newmarket High School.

She was the beloved wife of Steve Barden, whom she married in 1986 and then moved to Maine. She had worked at Super Valu in Portland for more than 15 years. She was presently enrolled at Andover College, where she was working toward an associate’s degree in business.

She was predeceased by her mother, Pauline L. Caswell, who died in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Barden, of Windham; her father, Richard A. Caswell of Lee; her two sisters, Diane Caswell of California, and Suzanne Brown and her husband, Ray, of Lee, who loved and will miss her dearly; her beloved gift from God, Spike, her dog; her maternal grandmother, Rita Clough of Newmarket; and her great-aunt, Bea Morin of Newmarket. Also, she was the loving aunt of Alexandra, Samantha, Jesse, Madison and Eliza Brown.

BARDEN - Janice (Caswell) Barden, 36, of Anglers Road, Windham, Maine, and formerly of Newmarket, N.H., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the home of Suzie and Ray Brown, 279 Lee Hook Road, Lee. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

Maurice F. Brown Jr.

HAMPTON - Maurice F. Brown Jr., 84, of 254 High St., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Epping on March 24, 1918, a son of the late Maurice F. and Helen (Caraway) Brown.

He was a graduate of Watson Academy in Epping and Hesser Business College and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant with the 336th Ordnance Depot Co.

He retired as a deputy clerk with the New Hampshire Superior Court, working for several years in the former Rockingham County Justice Building in Exeter. He previously worked for the former Swift & Company in their chemical division for 32 years.

He had resided in Hampton since 1959, having moved from Exeter, and for the past 15 years enjoyed wintering in Kissimmee, Fla.

He was a member and former deacon of the First Congregational Church; Ocean Side Grange #260; East Rockingham Pomona Grange #11; N.H. State Grange and the National Grange; the Hampton Walking Club; the Seacoast Striders of Portsmouth; Hampton Historical Society and the Hampton American Legion Post 35.

An active Mason, he was a member of St. James Lodge #102 F & AM; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth & Dover; N.H. Consistory Valley of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine, Concord, and Patrol C of the Temple; Portsmouth Shrine Club; Gen. William Whipple Military Lodge of Portsmouth; East Gate Club of Seabrook; and the Society of Veteran Freemasons.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lewis W. Brown; and a sister, Sylvia B. Moulton.

He was the husband of Agnes M. (Collins) Brown for 46 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Robert C. Brown and his wife, Theresa, of Germany; one daughter, Sheree L. Brown of Hampton; two grandchildren, Bradley Brown and Patriccq Brown, both of Germany; and several nieces and nephews.

BROWN - Maurice F. Brown Jr., 84, of 254 High St., Hampton, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. American Legion service at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Masonic services at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Epping. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Shriners Burn Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Elizabeth M. Staniels

MANCHESTER - Elizabeth M. (Mitchell) Staniels, 92, died Aug. 26, 2002, at the Catholic Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Manchester on May 9, 1910, she was the daughter of Lawrence J. and Mary (Martin) Mitchell.

She was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Manchester Central High School, Class of 1927A.

Until her retirement, she was employed as a finance clerk at the regional office of the Veterans Administration for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). She was a summer resident of Hampton Beach.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry E. Staniels, who died in 1944. She was also predeceased by her son, Robert Staniels, who died on Aug. 4, 2002.

Members of her family include one daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Staniels of Hampton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. James F. (Margaret) Horan of Hazlet, N.J., and Mrs. Robert E. (Helen) Joyce of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

STANIELS - Elizabeth M. (Mitchell) Staniels, 92, of Manchester, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002. Friends and family may call from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., at the corner of Hanover Street in Manchester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to N.H. Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 686, 215 Myrtle St., Manchester, NH 03105; or to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Paul Morrissey

PORTSMOUTH - Paul Morrissey, 58, also of Washington, D.C., died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at his sister’s home in Greenland.

Born in Portsmouth on Aug. 4, 1944, he was the son of James E. and Anna (Zaremba) Morrissey. He was a graduate of St. Patrick School, Bishop Bradley High School, the University of New Hampshire with the Class of 1966, and he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was a self-employed contractor in Washigton, D.C., and locally.

He is survived by a daughter, Natania Paula and her husband, Przemek Jamoroz, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Sheila Kendall of Greenland; one brother, Michael Morrissey of Greenland and New York City; a niece; and several nephews.

MORRISSEY - Paul Morrissey, 58, of Portsmouth and Washington, D.C., died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

David D. Pridham

MADBURY - Funeral services for David D. Pridham, 59, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. Fritz Cerulo of St. Mary’s Church in Dover officiated. Words of remembrance were given by David’s son, Darayl Pridham, and stepdaughter, Jenifer Hall. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Nashua, with committal services by Deacon David Hamel of St. Aloysius Church in Nashua.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to David’s wife, Julie Goulet. Bearers were Darayl Pridham, Daniel Pridham, Steve Jannelle, Gordon Couch, Jimmy Couch and Ben Couch.

Robert J. Chamberlain Sr.

HAMPTON - The funeral for Robert J. Chamberlain Sr., 76, of 164 Mill Road, who died Aug. 24, 2002, was held Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Paul Testa, personal friend of Mr. Chamberlain. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Deacon Dennis Jacobs was soloist. Acolytes, all members of the Holy Name Society, were George Brown, George Glenfield and Norman LaRose. The pall was extended over the casket by Mr. Chamberlain’s son and daughter, Robert J. Chamberlain Jr. and Susan J. Hebert. Christian symbols were placed on the casket by grandson Jeffrey Hebert and daughter-in-law Karen Chamberlain. The gifts were presented to the altar by granchildren Michael and Lauren Hebert. The readings were offered by son-in-law David Hebert and friend William Corey. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the Ri

te of Committal conducted by the Rev. Griffin and Deacon Testa. Full military honors were accorded by a detachment of Navy personnel from Brunswick Naval Air Station in Maine. Taps was sounded. The flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Patricia A. (Harries) Chamberlain, widow of Mr. Chamberlain, by Lt. Phil Kent. Pallbearers were Martin Golden, William Corey, Robert Golden, Thomas Harris, Richard Harris and James Intoppa.

KALF - Howard Richard Kalf, 78, of 143 Rogers Road, died Aug. 25, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, on State Road, with the Rev. David Avery officiating. Please omit flowers; donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
