Glenn "Ed" Jentes

MADBURY - Glenn "Ed" Jentes, 55, of 47 Evans Road, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, surrounded by his family.

Ed was born Oct. 24, 1946, in Dover, Ohio, to Glenn E. Jentes Sr. and Violet Jentes. He graduated from Dover (Ohio) High School where he played football and basketball. In 1969, he graduated from Tri-State University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

He and his wife relocated to the Seacoast where he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 19 years as a field engineer for Westinghouse Electric. For the past 13 years, Ed worked for the shipyard as a nuclear engineer.

He was a founding member of the Seacoast Junior Volleyball program and for the last four years served as its director. He was extremely proud that hundreds of area young women were able to play volleyball on a regional and national level, with many of them going on to compete in college. His love of volleyball came from the many years of watching his daughters play at Oyster River and in college.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and his family spent 30 summers at their camp on Great East Lake, where he was most at home. Many will remember his blue Lund fishing boat on the lake early in the morning or late in the evening trolling for "the big one." He will be greatly missed by his many friends.

In addition to his wife, "Becky" (Rebecca Levers), with whom he just celebrated his 33rd wedding anniversary, he is survived by two beautiful daughters of whom he was so proud, Maggie Jentes of Laconia and Katie Jentes of Portsmouth; his mother, Violet Jentes, who called him "her little boy" and "the finest young man she ever knew," of Langdon Place, Dover; his sister, Suzanne Kosters and her husband Ed of Wyoming, Mich.; his niece, Jennifer Alvis and her family of San Jose, Calif.; and two sisters-in-law, Karen Fulton and Diane Hayes of Ohio.

He was predeceased by his father, Glenn E. Jentes Sr.

JENTES - Glenn "Ed" Jentes, 55, of 47 Evans Road, Madbury, died Sept. 8, 2002. Friends and relatives may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Route 4, Lee. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the chapel. Burial will follow at Durham Cemetery, Durham. Family flowers only are requested. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Seacoast Junior Volleyball program.

Rosco J. McDonough Jr.

AUGUSTA, Maine - Rosco J. McDonough Jr., 65, a former longtime resident of Kittery, died at his residence on Sept. 9, 2002.

He was born Feb. 6, 1937, in York, the son of Rosco J. and Emily (Huff) McDonough Sr.

He attended local schools and was a graduate of Traip Academy. Over the years he worked in shipping and receiving at Miller Shoes of Dover, N.H., and he was a well known taxi driver in the Kittery area as well.

He is survived by a son, Rosco J. McDonough III of Berwick; two daughters, Donna King and her husband, Charles, of Kittery, and Darlene McDonough of Manchester, N.H.; his cherished four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Virginia Huff of Kittery.

McDONOUGH - Rosco J. McDonough Jr., 65, of Augusta, Maine, and a former longtime resident of Kittery, Maine, died Sept. 9, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Stan Rockafellow, pastor of the Eliot Baptist Church, will conduct services. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. At the family’s request, donations in Mr. McDonough’s memory can be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 128 Sewall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Lester W. Thomas

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service for Lester W. Thomas, 91, of 4 Sherwood Drive, was held Monday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H.

The Rev. Donna Muise, pastor of the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Thomas’ granddaughters, Brenda Du Fault and Sheila Lokken. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, in Eliot, with committal services by the Rev. Muise. Bearers were Timothy Thomas, Terrance Thomas, David Kibat, Shaun Baker, Matthew St. Pierre, Bryce Ramos, Joseph Lokken, and Paul Du Fault.

Harold Kalf

KITTERY, Maine - A memorial service for Harold Kalf was held on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, Maine. The Rev. David Avery officiated. He spoke of Kalf’s younger years as a cowhand in Arizona, riding in the rodeo and working on the ranch. He also spoke of his many businesses and of the relationships he made through those businesses.

Kind words of remembrance were spoken by many family members and friends in attendance, including words from his daughter, Karen Billipp. All were invited to a time of remembrance and sharing at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Peter Billipp. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alan Neergaard Pope

EXETER - Alan Neergaard Pope, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Sunbridge of Exeter, following a prolonged illness.

The son of Bayard and Elma (Neergaard) Pope, he was born on April 17, 1917, in Bronxville, N.Y. He had been a Seacoast area resident for the past 35 years.

He was a graduate of St. Paul’s School and attended Princeton University. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a bombardier/navigator on B-17s, and received the Air Medal in 1945. He was the Associated Press AP bureau chief in Concord in the 1950s, and served as administrative assistant to governors Lane Dwinnell and Hugh Gregg.

Following public service, he had a long career in advertising. In retirement, he operated sailing schools in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Gloucester, Mass.; and for 20 years at the Wentworth-by-the-Sea hotel in New Castle.

He also wrote columns for the Rochester Times the the Wolfeboro Times.

He was a member of the Piscataqua Maritime Commission and was named its Citizen of the Year in 1989.

He is survived by his two sons and their wives; Alexander and Jennifer Pope of Newfields, and Christopher and Kristine Pope of Concord; two daughters, Katherine Coster of Duncan, British Columbia, Canada; and Ballard Andrews of Melrose, Mass.; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

POPE - Alan Neergaard Pope, 85, of Exeter, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002. There will be no calling hours. A private gathering of family and close friends will be held on Saturday at the home of Alexander and Jennifer Pope. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Piscataqua Maritime Commission, P.O. Box 545, Portsmouth, NH, 03802.

Doris E. Chapman

KITTERY, Maine - Doris E. Chapman, 94, died Sept. 11, 2002, at the Mark Wentworth Home, in Portsmouth.

She was the daughter of Clarance G. Newson and Alice L. (Getchell) Newson. She was predeceased by her husband, Asa Chapman.

She was a lifelong resident of Kittery and a graduate of R.W. Traip Academy, Class of 1926.

She worked at the Morley Button Company and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before becoming a homemaker.

She enjoyed riding in the sidecar of a Harley Davidson motorcycle to the White Mountains with her husband.

She is survived by her loving brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Doris Newson of Eliot; daughter-in-law Elaine Pollis of Winthrop; niece Janice Bellatone of Kittery; nephews Neil and Jack Chapman of Buffalo, N.Y., David Newson of Kittery, and Alan Newson of Eliot.

CHAPMAN 10- Doris E. Chapman, 94, of Kittery, Maine, died Sept. 11, 2002. A private memorial service will take place at 9 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Interment will follow at Orchard Grove Cemetery. Arrangements done under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Elias (Al) Leitman

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Elias (Al) Leitman, 84, died at his home on Sept. 9, 2002, where he and his wife, Molly, had lived for 20 years.

Born in Chelsea, Mass., he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, receiving his engineering degree from Northeastern University after his service. He worked for Keystone Manufacturing Company and Gaulin Corporation until retiring to Florida.

In addition to being with Molly, he was happiest spending time with his daughter, Helaine Roberts, of Portsmouth, and with his grandson, Adam, and granddaughter, Alexandra. All who knew him enjoyed his gentle manner, dry wit and caring soul.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter; his son-in-law, Sanford Roberts of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; sisters Ida Tate of Boca Raton and Rose Kontoff of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and brothers Louis Lightman of Swampscott, Mass. and Bernard Lightman of N. Falmouth, Mass.

LEITMAN - Elias (Al) Leitman, 84, of Boca Raton, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth. No flowers please. Memorial donations may be made to National Tay Sachs & Allied Diseases Association, 2001 Beacon St., Brighton, MA 02135. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Armand Pelletier

HAMPTON BEACH - Funeral services for Armand Pelletier, 91, husband of Irene (Pelleriu) Pelletier, of 27 River Ave., and formerly of Main Dunstable Road, Nashua, were held Monday morning, Sept. 9, 2002, at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Services were conducted at the funeral home by Jerome A. Jozak. Interment followed the services in the family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Nashua. Pallbearers were Bruce Prince and Donald Phaneuf.

In his memory, contributions may be made to the Seacoast Visiting Nurses Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862. Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Marjorie "Betty" Morrissey

PORTSMOUTH - Marjorie "Betty" Morrissey, 74, of 20 Islington St., formerly of the Margeson Apartments, died Tuesday Sept., 10, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Kittery, Maine, on Dec. 10, 1927, she was the daughter of Charles Clinton and Marjorie (Gauvin) Sprague. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1945 and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth here.

She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The widow of William Morrissey who died in 1991, she is survived by two daughters; Kathleen A. (Morrissey) Kazenas of Boerne, Texas; and Susan E. (Morrissey) Shannon of Eliot, Maine; three grandchildren, Julia Shannon, Michael Kazenas and William Kazenas; and her longtime companion, William Higgins, of Portsmouth.

MORRISSEY - Marjorie "Betty" Morrissey, 74, of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Friends may visit with the family the morning of the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 360 Route 101, Unit 3A, Bedford, NH 03110.

Thomas Gosselin

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral for Thomas Gosselin was held Monday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine. The service was officiated by the Rev. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, Maine.

Avery spoke of Tommy’s kindness to his family, whom he adored, and of his love of his job. He also spoke of his love of the river and of taking friends and family out for enjoyable times on the water. The service continued with a committal service at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, Maine, where Michael Bacher, Richard Pruett, Jason Roes, Wayne Covington and Carl Naehring served as pallbearers. Everyone was invited to the First Congregational Church Parish Hall for refreshments and a time of sharing. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Michael T. Kostandin

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Michael T. Kostandin, 76, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Wednesday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Kostandin’s four children, Theodore M. Kostandin, Tessie M. Kostandin, John A. Kostandin and Michael P. Kostandin. An honor guard was formed by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division, Casualty Area Command, Fort Drum, N.Y., including Sgt. Lee Hamilton and Pfc. Stephan Fields. Taps was sounded and the American flag was folded by Hamilton and Fields, and presented to Kostandin’s former wife, Rosina Perkins, Hamilton. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, in Penacook, with committal services by Pastor Gum.

William Martin Adams

GREENLAND - William Martin Adams, 75, of 301 Bayside Road, died Sept. 11, 2002, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on May 26, 1927, in Pawtucket, R.I., a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Russell) Adams.

He was educated at Pawtucket East High School and the Rhode Island School of Design.

He was a member of the Rhode Island State Police for nine years and was a security manager for Verizon Telephone Company for 26 years, retiring in 1988. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, who served during World War II, and was a former commander of the Greenland Veterans Association. He was also a member of the Prime Time Club in Portsmouth, and he enjoyed hunting and ice fishing and loved his garden. He was also a Friend of Bill W.

Family members include his wife, Elizabeth (Jones) Adams; two sons, John W. (Margaret) Adams of Warwick, R.I., and William K. (Susan) Adams of Greenland; two granddaughters, Kristen A. Adams of Chicago, Ill. and Jennifer Collins of Bridgewater, Mass.; a great-grandson, Cameron Michael Collins; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Russell, Kenneth, John and Stewart Adams.

Scott A. Brown

HAMPTON - Scott A. Brown, 42, of 152 Winnacunnet Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Fairville, N.C., on Nov. 27, 1959, a son of Gerald and MaryLee (Cunningham) Brown of Milo, Maine. He was a graduate of Hamden Academy in Hamden, Maine, and attended the Gulf Marine Program in Portland, Maine. He was formerly employed as general manager for NSI Petroleum in Newburgh, Maine, for 16 years. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Brownville Junction, Maine. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and being on the sea. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Besides his parents of Milo, Maine, survivors include three children, Amiee, Joshua and Meagan Brown, all of Hamden, Maine; a special friend, Lisa Butler of Hampton; grandmother Nellie Brown of Milo, Maine; grandfather Elmer Cunningham of Milo, Maine; three brothers, Matthew Brown of Milo, Maine, Gary Brown of San Francisco, Calif., and Mark Brown of Albuquerque, N.M.; three nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

William Thomas "Bill" Seymour

PORTSMOUTH - William Thomas "Bill" Seymour, 85, of 47 Thornton St., died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

The son of the late Horace P. and C. Alice (Murphy) Seymour, he was a native of North Hampton and Portsmouth. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific and the China Sea on a destroyer escort. He retired as an industrial engineer technician from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1973 after 33 years.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; a member of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; Washington Chapter #3; Davenport Council #5; DeWitt Clinton Commandery KT #2, of which he was Commander in 1960 and 1961; Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery KT in 1970; and an honorary member of the Grand Commandery KT of Vermont and N.H. Society of Freemasons; a member of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest; Past Commanders Association; and the Forty-Fivers of N.J.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mildred L. (Durgin) Seymour; daughters Beverly L. Peterson of Conway, Alaska, Caroline L. Seymour of Eliot, Maine, and Roberta L. Ladrie and her husband, Mark, of Dover; six grandchildren, Pamela Phillips of Conway, Alaska, Darryl Meadows of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Tonya Ladrie and Brian Ladrie, both of Dover, and Graham Peterson and J. L. Peterson, both of Conway, Alaska; and six great-grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Joshua, Cody, Christian and McKenzie.

SEYMOUR - William Thomas "Bill" Seymour, 85, of 47 Thornton St., Portsmouth, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Masonic services by St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc., New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688; or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101; or to North Congregational Church, Memorial Fund, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
