Malcolm P. McNair Jr.

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Malcolm P. McNair Jr., 82, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at The Meadows nursing home in North Andover. He had suffered from Pick’s disease, a dementia similar to Alzheimer’s.

Born and raised in Cambridge, Mass., Mac was a resident of Bronxville, N.Y., since 1951, except for six years in the Midwest in the 1960s, and the past three years when he relocated to the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover. He spent most of his summers growing up at his family’s place in Madison, N.H.

He was a graduate of Harvard College, the Harvard Business School, and several U.S. Army schools.

During World War II, he fought in Europe as a field artillery captain.

After graduate school, he served in corporate management for 35 years, the last 21 as chief human resource officer or chief administrative officer for four major corporations. When he retired from Gulton Industries, he founded his own company, Management Resources International, and joined a group of developing multinational agricultural companies.

During his corporate career, he also served on the Organizational Planning Council of the Conference Board, on the advisory board of the Columbia Graduate Business School; he was president of the Organizational Development Council of New York, and was alumni coordinator for the Management Beyond Business research program of the Harvard Business School, which his class had funded.

In Bronxville, Mac worked in a variety of roles, starting as founder of the Citizens for Eisenhower and Ike’s Westchester campaign manager in 1952, and on through Village Republican chairman, Eastchester Republican campaign manager, special gifts chairman for the United Fund, governor and later president of the Bronxville Field Club.

He was instrumental in helping New York Gov. George Pataki to successfully be elected to office.

He was an avid skier and co-founded the Drifters Ski Club, located in Jackson, N.H. He enjoyed sailing, tennis, bowling, and golf. Several times a year, he would go hunting at his family’s cabin in Holeb, Maine.

Survivors include three children, Elizabeth H. McNair of Lincoln, Mass., Laurie M. Corron of Acton, Mass., and John R. McNair of Portsmouth.; and two grandchildren, Amy E. Corron and Samantha M. Corron.

MCNAIR - Malcolm P. McNair Jr., 82, of North Andover, Mass., died Sept. 28, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Madison Church, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Wilcox oficiating. Burial will be in the Gilman Cemetery in Madison, N.H. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (today) at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, N.H.

William Neil Merrill

AMESBURY, Mass. - William Neil Merrill, 42, of Cedar Court, died from unexpected causes on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was very much loved and is survived by his wife, Diana; his children, Mark, Tonya, Melonie and Billy; his sisters, Julie, Dawn, Marsha, Trina, Shirley and Michelle; and many nieces and nephews.

Marjorie G. Worstall

YORK, Maine - Marjorie G. Worstall, 98, formerly of York, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

Born July 15, 1904, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Frank and Florence (Golden) Voelker. She was a graduate of Lansdowne, Pa., High School and attended Swarthmore College.

Mrs. Worstall had formerly resided in Lansdowne. She had lived in Canadensis, Pa. for 25 years and York, Maine, for nine years.

She was a member of Fair View Presbyterian Church of Fountain Inn, S.C. When she resided in Lansdowne, she was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Lansdowne.

She dedicated her life to helping her family and friends and enjoyed time with her family.

She was the wife of 62 years to the late E. Lawrence Worstall Sr., who died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, the Rev. Edwin "Ned" L. Worstall Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C.; one daughter, Dorie Cheney Button of York, Maine; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

WORSTALL - Marjorie G. Worstall, 98, formerly of York, Maine, died Sept. 29, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Drexel Hill, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Dept., 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Philip H. Smart

PORTSMOUTH - Philip H. Smart, 85, widower of Lucy Belle (Oulton) Smart, of 133 Lincoln Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 7, 1916, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Harvey and Edna (Tucker) Smart and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1934.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

SMART - Philip H. Smart, 85, of 133 Lincoln Ave., Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Frances Farr

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Frances Farr, who died Sept. 25, 2002, in York, were held Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, from the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, with family, friends and the Rev. Graham Alvord officiating.

The well-attended service was attended by family, friends and members of her church. Fond memories of Frances were offered by her grandchildren and others close to her. One of her favorite hymns, "In the Garden," was played on the organ.

The congregation proceeded to the church cemetery, where burial took place, and the Rev. Alvord offered committal prayers. All were invited for a time of sharing and refreshments offered in the church parish hall. Arrangements were entrusted to the J. S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

He was employed for 33 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring as nuclear propulsion supply supervisor in 1973.

He was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) of Portsmouth and formerly served on the Board of Wardens. He was a member of the American Legion and was an active supporter of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas P. Smart of West Hartford, Conn., and Army Maj. Peter H. Smart and his wife, Alexandra, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandson Nicholas Smart and granddaughter Phoebe Smart, both of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Robert Smart of Annandale, Va.; stepbrother Roger Tucker of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline H. (Trefethen) Chapman

PORTSMOUTH - Pauline H. (Trefethen) Chapman, 70, of 928 South St., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born June 17, 1932, in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Dorothy (Muder) Trefethen.

Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Faye Walsh and Katherine Ann Caswell, both of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Susan Chapman, Shawn Walsh, Christine Caswell and Shannon Walsh, all of Portsmouth; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Katelynn, both of Portsmouth; and her sister, Dolly Sherboneau of New York.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lauris J. Chapman, on April 19, 2000; and her son, Lauris J. Chapman Jr., on March 29, 1995.

Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli

PORTSMOUTH - Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli, 72, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 14, 1930, in Westfield, Mass., she lived in Portsmouth for the past 29 years with her mother (whom she survived) and her dearest friend, Winifred Smith, formerly of Huntington, Mass.

She worked in the underwriting division of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Springfield, Mass., and Portsmouth for nearly 40 years.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sister, Dorothy Keeler of Bradenton, Fla.; her brother, Clarence Giovanelli of Westfield, Mass.; her nephew, Charles Keeler III, of Sarasota, Fla.; and her nieces, Carol Gravel of Amherst, N.H., and Florence LeClair of East Longmeadow, Mass.

Hundreds of lives have been touched by Vivian’s kindness and good deeds. We will all miss her, but we will each have a memory to hold on to forever.

GIOVANELLI - Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli, 72, of Portsmouth, died Sept. 29, 2002. A simple committal service will be held at the Norwich Bridge Cemetery in Huntington, Mass. Vivian and her family request that instead of flowers, donations should be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. The people at Seacoast Hospice were exceptional to Vivian and her family during her final days. Thank you all and especially Chase Merrill.

Edith T. Geraci

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Edith T. Geraci, 84, formerly of Thornton Street, were held Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Monsignor Lawrence Burns. Acolyte was Ed Shea and lector was Mary Canino. Organist was Maureen Sheehan, and soloist was Clara Cembalisty.

The eulogy was delivered by Edie’s daughter, Carla Nixon, who observed that her mother found great pleasure in the simple things: being with family, playing with children, and gardening. She loved sports and rarely missed a child’s or grandchild’s baseball, softball or football game.

She was active in working to support the various booster clubs for her children’s sports teams as well as the March of Dimes and the Sons of Italy.

She welcomed people to the family’s camp in Maine. She loved the water and was a wonderful swimmer.

She had a great sense of humor and a way of making everyone feel comfortable and special. She will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Jay Brewster, Michael Geraci, George Pantelakos and John Henson.

Gertrude W. (Caswell) Weeks

PORTSMOUTH - Gertrude W. "Gertie" (Caswell) Weeks, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born July 29, 1912, in Rye, she was the daughter of the late Sherman O. and Grace A. (McHatton) Caswell.

Survivors include three sisters, Mae Hayes of Portsmouth; Dorothy Avery of Kittery Point, Maine; and Agnes Courtemanche of Portsmouth; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest W. Weeks; her daughter, Dorothy I. Shattuck, in 1990; a grandson, Stanley Shattuck; and four sisters.

WEEKS - Gertrude W. "Gertie" (Caswell) Weeks, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died Sept. 27, 2002. Private services were held at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements were by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.
