Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Sr.

EXETER - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Sr., 77, of 17 Hampton Road, formerly of Hampton, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born in Camden, N.J., on Aug. 22, 1925, a son of the late Frank L. and Rose M. (Pfeffer) Wagner.

He retired from the Air Force in January of 1975 after serving more than 31 years on active duty during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Among his awards are the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

He was a member of the N.H. Chapter of the Retired Officers Association, serving six years on its board of directors. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, Hampton, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He also served for three years on the board of directors of the Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association.

A brother, Vincent C. Wagner, predeceased him.

Family members include his wife of 56 years, Martha E. (Guyton) Wagner of Exeter; one son, Retired Army Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Jr. of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Gwynne Graves of Hampton and Victoria Marcucio of Derby, Conn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul L. Wagner of Florence, Ala.; six nephews; and five nieces.

WAGNER - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Sr., 77, of 17 Hampton Road, Exeter, formerly of Hampton, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Carl E. Tuttle

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Carl E. Tuttle, who died Sept. 28, 2002, in York, were held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. The service was officiated by the Rev. Batchelor of Portsmouth, N.H. The well-attended service was opened by the Rev. Batchelor offering opening prayers and remarks about Mr. Tuttle. Letters from friends and from his children and wife were offered by Mr. Tuttle’s son, Carl Jr. Several of Mr. Tuttle’s favorite songs were played. All were invited to a time of sharing and refreshments following the service. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Jamie Marie Doyon

ELIOT, Maine - Jamie Marie Doyon, infant daughter of Christopher and Jennifer (Ayre) Doyon of Eliot, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass.

She was born Aug. 30, 2002, at New England Medical Center in Boston with a rare chromosomal disorder. She touched the lives of many people and left a legacy of love and connection. Her strong spirit and heart kept her with us for almost five weeks.

In addition to her parents, survivors include two brothers, Zachary and Adam Doyon of Eliot; paternal grandparents, Don and Carol Doyon of Strafford, N.H.; maternal grandparents, Walter and Patricia Ayre of Eliot; great-grandmothers, Marie Doyon of Somersworth, N.H., and Stella Thibeault of Winchester, N.H.; two cousins, Darren and Jake Doyon; and several aunts and uncles.

DOYON - Jamie Marie Doyon, infant daughter of Christopher and Jennifer (Ayre) Doyon of Eliot, Maine, died Oct. 2, 2002. There are no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Holy Rosary Church, 189 North Main St., Rochester, N.H., with the Rev. Robert C. Guillemette, associate pastor, as celebrant. Friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Gladys E. (Lawry) Fernald

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Gladys E. (Lawry) Fernald, 96, of 188 Jones Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Thursday. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point, Maine, officiated. Granddaughter Laura Bailey read the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. In attendance were members of the church. Burial was in Newington Cemetery, Newington, with committal services by the Rev. Wardwell. Bearers were Neil Bailey, John Bailey, Steve Shawney and Robert Sahli.

Paul L. Vanderlinden

KITTERY, Maine - Paul L. Vanderlinden Sr., 69, of Kittery, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Portsmouth Hospital.

Mr. Vanderlinden was born April 29, 1933, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Marion C. and Hazel (Brom) Vanderlinden. Mr. Vanderlinden attended local schools. He enlisted in the service, first in the U.S. Navy, and later in the Air Force where he served for more than 20 years. He served and defended his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Vanderlinden, over the years, worked as an electrical engineer at the former A.B.B. Combustion Engineering Co. in Portsmouth. In his leisure time he was very committed to Alcoholics Anonymous. He helped many people overcome their past and helped them to make positive changes in their lives. He was active in all of the group’s activities for 25 years. He was a devoted and loving father, husband and son. Paul would call his Mom every Sunday morning at 9 o’clock to see how she was doing and show his affection to her over the phone. He loved to spend time with his family, putting on barbecues for everyone, and urged his own children to invite their friends to these o

utings. Mr. Vanderlinden enjoyed hunting and fishing and life in general. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Carol; six sons, Paul L. Vanderlinden Jr. of Fulton, Mo., Terry W. Vanderlinden of Dover, N.H., Peter M. Hanlon of Portsmouth, N.H., Bernard J. Hanlon of Portsmouth, N.H., James E. Dunton of Sarasota, Fla., and Richard T. Dunton of Rochester, N.H.; two daughters, Becky O’Brien of Portsmouth, N.H., and Linda Dunton of Rochester, N.Y.; his brother, Marion C. "Junior" Vanderlinden of Perry, Iowa; a sister, Linda Reighhard of Waynesville, Mo.; his cherished 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He will be missed, but always remembered by his many friends and extended family.

VANDERLINDEN - Paul L. Vanderlinden Sr., 69, of Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 3, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Those who wish may send flowers or donations may be made to the Guild of Portsmouth Regional Hospital for Cancer Care Services, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

David L. Stanley

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for David L. Stanley, of 185 Raleigh Way, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services held at the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth. Rev. David Thompson, pastor, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Jim Calvert and Cathy Stanley. Soloist was Cathy Stanley and organist was Ida Morang.

In attendance was a large delegation of family, friends, and associates including representatives from the Portsmouth post office and the Portsmouth High School Class of 1938.

Burial was in Proprietors Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Thompson.

Bearers were Jim Calvert, Bill Chase, Mike Deblois, Willy Donnelly, Richie Froehling, Al Lightner, Yama Sklarski and Jim Stanley.

Patricia A. Dei Rossi

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Patricia Anne Dei Rossi, 72, of 1060 South Mary Ave., Sunnyvale, Calif., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, after a brief illness, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was a native of Portsmouth, born Jan 16, 1930, daughter of the late William F. and Hazel (Lavigne) McIntyre. Formerly a longtime resident of Portsmouth, she had resided in Sunnyvale since 1955.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1947, and had attended her 55th reunion last Saturday.

Patricia was a telephone operator in the 1940s and 1950s and was a gift wrapper at the Emporium department store in Mountain View, Calif. She was a member of the Garden Club and Historical Society in Sunnyvale. She had a great fondness for cats and dogs.

She is survived by three sons, Dale Raymond Dei Rossi, of Cupertino, Calif., Daniel Robert Dei Rossi of Campbell, Calif., and Dwayne Richard Dei Rossi, of Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Diane Rae Dei Rossi of Rhinelander, Wisc.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Carolyn Keller, and two brothers, Robert and William McIntyre.

DEI ROSSI - Patricia Anne Dei Rossi, 72, of Portsmouth, died Oct. 4, 2002. A time of gathering will be at the home of her niece, Pam Kasnet, 42 Old Town Farm Road, Exeter, from 2 to 4 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Jane E. Allen

KITTERY, Maine - Jane Elizabeth Allen, 83, of 5 Bridge St. died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born on July 6, 1919, in Portsmouth, N.H., she was a daughter of John and Alice (Guiney) Colliton and attended local schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1938.

She met and married in June of 1942 her husband of more than 60 years, Leonard W. Allen.

She was active in her church, St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery, serving on the Church Life Committee and other areas as needed. She and her husband enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels in Kittery and serving for a time with K-CAP. Mrs. Allen also owned and operated Slender You in Kittery and enjoyed the people she met through her work.

Her first love was her family.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Patricia Southwick of Kittery, Donna and her husband Harry Yee of Fairfax, Va., and Kristina Benson of Kittery; a son, Leonard W. Allen III and his wife Sheri Foley-Allen of Woodbridge, Va.; nine grandchildren, Dawn Southwick-Walton, Kristin Southwick-Davis, David Yee, Kenneth Yee, Andrew Yee, Amy Allen, Kelly Allen, Erica Benson and Kirk Benson; great-grandchildren, Matthew A. Walton, Benjamin L. Walton, Katherine G. Walton, Jonathan R. Davis and Andrew J. Davis; a brother, John Colliton of Greenland, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, William J. Colliton; and her sister, Nancy Hamrick.

ALLEN - Jane Elizabeth Allen, 83, of 5 Bridge St., Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 4, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday evening from 6 to 8 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Dorothy Fullam

WINDHAM - Sister Dorothy Fullam (formerly Sister M. Emmanuel), 88, of Windham, a Sister of Mercy for 70 years, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center in Windham, after a brief illness.

A native of Portsmouth, she was the daughter of James T. and Catherina A. (Quinlan) Fullam.

She received a bachelor of science degree in business education from Mt. St. Mary College in Hooksett, and a master’s degree in business administration from Plymouth State College, Plymouth. She pursued further studies at Boston College, Boston University, the University of New Hampshire, the Catholic University of America, and Fordham University.

She taught at elementary schools in Berlin, Claremont, Concord, Manchester and Somersworth. She is best remembered as a teacher of business subjects in high schools and colleges. She taught at St. Mary High School, Dover; St. Joseph High School for Girls, Manchester; Bishop Brady High School, Concord; and St. Mary High School, Claremont, all in New Hampshire, as well as St. Ann High School in Gloucester, Mass. She was also a business teacher at Castle Secretarial School in Windham.

For 20 years, she was a business instructor in the New Hampshire Vocational/Technical College, first in Berlin, then in Stratham. After retiring from teaching, she did volunteer work at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Hampton.

Family members include a sister, Ms. Margaret A. Fullam of Manassas, Va.; and several cousins.

FULLAM - Sister Dorothy Fullam (formerly Sister M. Emmanuel), 88, of Windham, died Oct. 4, 2002. Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center, Windham, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Sisters of Mercy in Windham. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, Windham, NH 03087-1297. Gail I. Massey

PORTSMOUTH - Gail I. Massey, 61, of Bow Street, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Born Nov. 10, 1940, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of Holman Chamberlain and the late Phyllis (Floyd) Chamberlain.

She grew up in Worcester and spent almost 20 years in Exeter, from 1976 to 1993. She had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1993.

She retired in 2001 and sold her business, Exeter Travel Inc., which she founded in 1988 and managed until retirement.

In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Roger G. Massey; two daughters, Christine Lawson of South Weymouth, Mass., and Karen Aguilo Seara of Rockledge, Fla.; two sons, Douglas Massey of Washington, D.C., and Dean Massey of Milford, Conn.; six grandchildren, Jordan, Justin, Dan, Gabriela, Marisa and Francisco; her father, Holman Chamberlain of Worcester, Mass.; two sisters, Karen Ashmore of Bethel, Conn., and Tracy O’Donnell of Worcester; one brother, Bruce Chamberlain of Worcester; and several nieces and nephews.

MASSEY - Gail I. Massey, 61, of Bow Street, Portsmouth, died Oct. 4, 2002. There are no services scheduled at this time. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma P. Adjutant

OGUNQUIT, Maine - Thelma Perkins Adjutant, 87, of School Street, wife of Linwood G. Adjutant, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the York Harbor Health Care Center at Sentry Hill after a brief illness.

She was born April 6, 1915, in Ogunquit, daughter of Sidney and Effie (Roberson) Perkins, and graduated from Wells High School.

After graduating from beauty school, she established Thelma’s Beauty Parlor at her residence. For many years, she was well-known in the area for Thelma’s Yarn Shop, which was located in her home.

She was married for 63 years to her husband, Linwood, and they lived across the street from the home where she was raised. She was a member and very active in the York-Ogunquit Methodist Church. She was a great cook and an avid bridge player, with membership in many local bridge clubs. In later life, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and sightseeing across the country and abroad.

In addition to her husband, survivors include sisters-in-law, Patricia Langille of York and Mavis Wilson of South Portland; a brother-in-law, Clayton Adjutant of York Beach; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Archer Perkins.

ADJUTANT - Thelma P. Adjutant, of Ogunquit, Maine, wife of Linwood G. Adjutant, died Oct. 5, 2002, at the York Harbor Health Care Center at Sentry Hill. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells, Maine. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

Philip H. Smart

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Philip H. Smart, 85, of 133 Lincoln Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Mr. Smart’s son Maj. Peter H. Smart gave words of remembrance.

In attendance were representatives from the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) of Portsmouth and former associates from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Gum. Taps was sounded and the American flag was folded and presented to son Thomas P. Smart.

Bearers were Thomas P. Smart, Maj. Peter H. Smart, Roger Tucker, Norman Odiorne, Bill Clifford and Stephen Little.

Charlotte E. Thorssell

EXETER - The funeral for Charlotte E. Thorssell, 79, of 5 Kossuth St. was held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. The Rev. Robert Golledge officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by Jill Smith.

Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. Golledge. Pallbearers were Paul Parker, Tom Murray, Tom Farnham, Ed Eldridge, Jody Sweetser and Samantha Sweetser.

George L. Murray

GREENLAND - George L. Murray, 79, of 256 Winnicut Road, former longtime resident of 9 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, died Friday Oct. 4, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Oct. 22, 1922, he was the son of Edward and Rose (Cloutier) Murray and was a lifelong resident here.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was called back to active duty during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post #6.

He was employed as a construction engineer and was with the Brown Industrial Group of Berwick, Maine, for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Eleanor (Nash) Murray; a daughter, Diane Thibodeau and her husband, Troy, of Greenland; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Kyle and Cole; and one sister, Theresa Murray of Portsmouth.

MURRAY - George L. Murray, 79, of Winnicut Road, Greenland, formerly of Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Calvary Cemetery. Friends are invited.
