Josephine Campbell

RYE - Josephine "Jo" Campbell, wife of Keith W. Eveland, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Ina and Michael Campbell of Plainfield, N.J.

She attended Keane College of New Jersey later in life, during the turbulent ’60s, excelling in her class and becoming a peace activist and fighting for women’s and civil rights. She did this after having two children. She soon became a loved and easily recognized elementary school teacher in the Piscataway, N.J., system. She joined the teachers union (NEA-N.J.) and quickly rose through its ranks to become the local NEA president. After separating from John Giacomarra, who has remained a steadfast friend, the adventurous woman sought out new areas to work for her union.

She eventually settled in and fell in love with the beautiful N.H. seacoast, her new husband, Keith Eveland, and his three children, Leslie of Avalon, Australia, Bradley (deceased), and Katy of Portsmouth, whom she also nurtured and raised.

She worked as the NEA-N.H. Uniserve Director of the Seacoast after serving a brief period in the North Country. She was instrumental in obtaining the NEA-N.H. endorsement for the living-wage campaign. She served as staff liaison for the state’s human and civil rights committee and for the state’s education support personnel, remaining active in her own union, serving terms as president and bargaining chair. She also received an M.B.A. in management from Antioch College during this period of her life.

In her personal and rare non-working hours, she fully took advantage of the N.H. seacoast, often swimming and relaxing by the ocean. She had an exquisite eye for style - in dress, art and home design. She was an adventurous traveler, visiting places of her ancestors in Ireland and Scotland, as well as many other exotic locales such as Turkey, Greece and Yugoslavia (pre-war). She also loved the U.S., exploring diverse locations such as Buddhist retreats in northern California and conversely "relaxing" in hectic New York City. She was an avid reader, regularly seen in the window seat of Café Kilim, and enjoyed fine food and champagne. "Life is too short for cheap wine," was one of her favorite quotes.

In addition to her husband, Keith W. Eveland, of Rye, she is survived by her children, Gary Giacomarra and his wife, Linda, of New York City, and Reid Giacomarra and her husband, Andy Marancik, of New Jersey; a grandson, Noah; her sisters, Betty Vail and Mary "May" McMaster; and her brother, Danny Campbell.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
