Ella A. Nuttle

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Ella A. Nuttle were held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home with the Rev. George Wardwell conducting the services. Burial was in the family lot, at Orchard Grove Cemetery, in Kittery. Following the services, a time of fellowship was held at the home of her son, Ernest R. Nuttle, in Somersworth. Services were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Lucy R. Rand

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Lucy R. Rand 92, of Lakewood, Ohio, a former longtime resident of Rye, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at Lakewood Hospital.

Born in St. Francois-du-Lac, Quebec, Canada on Oct. 8, 1910, she was the daughter of William and Cedulie (Bergeron) Duhaime.

She worked for many years at the former Continental Shoe Company, J.J. Newberry’s, and at the former Pease Air Force Base Exchange. She was also a member of the Rye Grange.

The widow of Charles W. "Babe" Rand, she is survived by Patricia Browning and her husband, Douglas, and Cynthia Senko and her husband, Thomas. She was also "Nana" to Joseph, Natasha, Donna, and Lisa, and leaves great-grandchildren Geoffrey, Kristin, Stephanie, Rebecca, and Douglas.

RAND - Lucy R. Rand 92, formerly of Rye, died Oct. 30, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.. Burial in Central Cemetery in Rye.

John A. Rowe

PORTSMOUTH - John A. Rowe, 82, of 607 Springbrook Circle, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born on Nov. 21, 1919 in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Silas and Clara (Evely) Rowe. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1937, and the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1941, where he was a member of the ROTC.

After graduating from college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C. and overseas in the China theater during World War II.

Following his discharge he managed the W.T. Grant Store in Van Buren, Maine, and owned and operated the Rowe department stores in Hingham and South Weymouth, Mass.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a purchasing agent for Coldwater Seafood Corporation in Chelsea, Mass.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth.

John was predeceased by his wife, Henrietta (Wieczorek) Rowe; his son, John Rowe; and two grandsons.

Survivors include his daughter, Pauline Rowe of South Weymouth, Mass.; a sister, Pauline R. Tucker of Portsmouth; a brother, Earl E. Rowe of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

ROWE - John A. Rowe, 82, of 607 Springbrook Circle, Portsmouth, died Oct.30,2002. A memorial service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 1p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

James P. Madar

HAMPTON, - James P. Madar, 39, of 877 Ocean Blvd., died on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at his residence.

He was born in Harrisburg, Pa., son of Michael and Caroline Madar. He was a 1980 graduate of Central Dauphin High School and received an Electronics Engineer degree from DeVry Institute in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Madar was a support engineer for GE Medical Systems.

He is survived by his father and mother of Harrisburg, Pa.; his brothers, Michael J. Madar of Harrisburg, and Edward F. Madar of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; his nephews Michael Madar and Dylan Madar of Mt. Joy, Pa., and Zachary Madar of Mechanicsburg; and nieces, Jennifer Madar and Makenna Madar of Mt. Joy, Pa., and Abigail Madar of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

MADAR - James P. Madar of 877 Ocean Boulevard, Hampton, died Oct. 30, 2002. Funeral services will be held at St. Ann Byzantine Catholic Church, Harrisburg, Pa., at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002. Viewing will be at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home Inc., Susquehanna Township, Pa., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. Doris Swete

HOOKSETT - Doris "Ma" Swete, 76, of Hooksett, died Sept. 27, 2002, at her residence after a brief illness.

Born in Manchester, June 30, 1926, she was the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Desmarais) Lussier. She lived in Manchester for many years and had been a Hooksett resident since 1993.

She worked for McDonald’s for 20 years and also worked at Albees’ Restaurant. In addition she worked for Shop ’n Save supermarkets.

She had a great love of people and cats.

In addition to her husband, Patrick J. Swete of Fremont, she is survived by three daughters, Pamela J. Swete of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Carol M. Swete of Concord, and Diana Kasiaras of New Boston; two sons-in-law, Dan Seguin and Nicholas Kasiaras Jr.; two grandsons, Nicholas Kasiaras III and Corey James Kasiaras; a sister, Marcelle Kinsella of Durham; nieces and nephews, and two grand-puppies.

SWETE - Doris "Ma" Swete, 76, of Hooksett, died Sept. 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Lawrence Church, Goffstown. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Mausoleum, Manchester, at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Manchester Animal Shelter, 490 Dunbarton Road, Manchester, NH 03102. Effie A. Blake

EXETER - Effie A. Blake, 95, formerly of Barbour Road, Hampton, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 at Exeter Healthcare, where she had been a resident since August of 2001.

She was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, on Aug. 19, 1907, the daughter of the late Archibald and Christy (MacDonald) Sutherland.

Mrs. Blake moved to Hampton in 1931 and worked as a domestic for the Francis Drake Estate in Rye for many years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton and the United Methodist Women’s Club.

She was the wife of the late Lester W. Blake, who died in 1991.

Family members include one nephew, Fred C. Sherburne of Hampton; three nieces, Jewell S. Brown of Hampton, Hazel Fergusen and Brenda McQueen, both of Cape Breton; several great-nieces; great-nephews; and several great great-nieces and great great-nephews.

BLAKE - Effie A. Blake, 95, formerly of Barbour Road, Hampton died Oct. 31, 2002. Services will be held in the United Methodist Church, Hampton, Tuesday at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private interment will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Roberta J. Veno

SOMERSWORTH - Roberta J. Veno, 59 of 6 Granite Way, died Friday Nov. 1, 2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Roberta was born in Dover on Feb. 18, 1943, and was the daughter of Martin and Madeline (Brennan) Sullivan. She was raised in Dover and was a graduate of Dover High School class of 1960. She received an associate’s degree in secretarial management from McIntosh College, Dover.

Roberta had lived in Somersworth since 1979, and for a time in Concord and Hampstead.

She had a career as an executive secretary; eight years with Fisher Scientific, and for the past 10 years served as secretary to the president at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Roberta was a past member of the Somersworth Women’s Club.

Family members include her husband of 38 years, David Veno, of Somersworth; her parents; a daughter, Holly Veno, of Marlborough, Mass., and her fiancé Ted Andrew; her godfather, Ed Flynn of Somersworth; and many cousins. cretarial management from McIntosh College, Dover.

VENO - Roberta J. Veno, 59 of 6 Granite Way, Somersworth, died Friday Nov. 1, 2002. Calling hours at Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Somersworth will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, High Street, Somersworth, with the Rev. Tom Coover, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to: Cancer Care Services c/o Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Jean Yates Blaisdell

YORK, Maine - Jean Yates Blaisdell, 76, of 181 Southside Road, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her residence, after a long illness. As her health failed, her spiritual strength was a blessing.

She was born in Chengtu, China, daughter of Baptist missionaries from Framingham, Mass. - Morton and Marie (Wilkes) Yates. She was a 1944 graduate of Framingham, Mass., High School and attended the University of Maine, where she met her future husband, Carroll Blaisdell, from Falmouth.

After she and Carroll were married in 1947, they farmed their property on Southside Road through the 1950s, until he started building homes. She was busy with the farm and the children and she assisted her husband with his contracting business, including her role as the landlord of their apartments.

Her faith in God was witnessed by many friends in the Gideons, their summer home in Alton Bay, N.H., the Cape Neddick Baptist Church, the York Street Baptist Church and the Church at Spruce Creek in Kittery.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll C. Blaisdell, who died in 2001; her parents; and her sisters.

She is survived by two daughter, Sarah Treat of Wallingford, Vt., and Susan Martin of Auburn; one son, Stephen Blaisdell of Manchester; and six grandchildren, of whom she was very proud.

BLAISDELL - Jean Y. Blaisdell, of Southside Road, York, Maine, widow of Carroll C. Blaisdell, died Nov. 2, 2002, in York. Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Church at Spruce Creek, 31 Wilson Road, Kittery, Maine. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Church at Spruce Creek, 31 Wilson Road, Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Martin E. Heffernan

MEREDITH - Martin E. Heffernan, 91, former superintendent of schools at Interlakes School District and SAU #2, died Nov. 2, 2002, at Golden View Home in Meredith. He wintered the past 22 years in Dunedin, Fla.

He was born March 31, 1911, in Portsmouth, and attended Portsmouth schools. He received a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Keene Teachers College in 1933, and was president of his class while there. He taught industrial arts at Hanover Junior High School while studying for his master’s in education at Boston University. He met and married Helen Ada Cushing, a business teacher at Lebanon High School. Together, they built their home in Hanover, on Brockway Road, from plans of his own design. They were active in town with friends and Boy Scouts; he received the Silver Beaver Award for leadership.

He attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific theater. He served as an officer in communications aboard the carrier USS Saint Lo, CVE-63, in the sea battle off Samar (Battle of Leyte Gulf) in the liberation of the Philippines, as part of Admiral Sprague’s "Taffy 3" Naval support force for General MacArthur’s ground attack. After surviving attacks from major Japanese naval gunfire and torpedo attempts, the Saint Lo came under air attack - which was to become fatal - when it was hit by a kamikaze suicide plane, the first naval vessel ever sunk in such a manner. After two days in the sea, a friendly vessel, along with Capt. McKenna and many others, rescued him. After medical care in Hawaii, he served in destroyer duty off Japan before returning home. He returned to teaching math in Hanover, where he became assistant principal and boys track coach, finishing out 21 years there.

In 1955, he took a position as superintendent of schools in Meredith and the six towns that would comprise N.H. SAU #2, devoting the last 18 years of his educational career to the betterment of education there and in the state of New Hampshire. He was a member of the N.H. Superintendents Association, and was legislative liaison for the N.H. School Boards Association after his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Retired Naval Officers Association, the USS Saint Lo Survivors’ Association, and was active in Rotary International in Meredith as well as Dunedin, Fla.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen (Cushing) Heffernan; and his second wife, Gertrude (Sturviis) Heffernan.

He is survived by one daughter, Gail E. White of Brentwood; a sister, Katherine Kearney of Manchester; one brother, Paul Connors of Portsmouth; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand- and great-nieces and -nephews.

Robert A. Blake

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Robert A. Blake, 77, of 52 Crockett Neck Road, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at his home. He was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Lyman, N.H., the son of Harry and Herriette (Clough) Blake, and attended local schools in Lyman.

In his early years, he worked at a number of different trades in the Lisbon area. In 1963, he moved with his family to Kittery Point, where he worked as a carpenter foreman for a number of local builders, including Davis Construction and Chet Boyce, for many years. He enjoyed being a part of many large building projects, including Seabrook Station, Seabrook Greyhound Park, and projects at the University of New Hampshire and with many local businesses. Most recently he enjoyed working with his friend, renovating and making many handcrafted displays for Johnny’s Candy Store in York Beach. He loved his work and practiced it till his death. He also enjoyed the time he spent on his boat fishing and enjoying the ocean. He loved life and lived it robustly until the day of his death.

He will be missed by those who loved him dearly, including his wife of 55 years, Thelma (Crowe) Blake; their daughter, Sharon Richard and her husband, George, of Kittery Point, Maine; his three sisters, Edna Hood of West Hartford, Vt., Ila Boutin of Lakewood Fla., and Catherine Szymczyk of Salem, Ohio; one nephew, Bruce Szymczyk of York; and two nieces, Donna Wilson and Darlene Boutin of Bristol, Conn.

BLAKE - Robert A. Blake, 77, of 52 Crockett Neck Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died Nov. 2, 2002, at his home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the First Christian Church, on Haley Road in Kittery Point. Friends may visit with the Blake family from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church, before the service. Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the First Christian Church, 542 Haley Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

HEFFERNAN - Martin E. Heffernan, 91, of Meredith, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Mayhew Funeral Home, Routes 3 and 104, Meredith. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Saint Charles Church in Meredith. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, friends may support the Martin E. Heffernan Memorial Scholarship, c/o Interlakes High School, P.O. Box 545, Meredith, NH 03253.

Matilda (Tillie) Litchfield Fox

YORK, Maine - Matilda (Tillie) Litchfield Fox, of 148 Nubble Road, died Nov. 2, 2002, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Born in Dracut, Mass., on June 26, 1920, she was a daughter of Joseph H. and Isabel (Vogt) Litchfield. She graduated from Dracut High School in 1937 and married her high school sweetheart, Robert T. Fox, on June 27, 1941.

She moved to York in 1966. Her greatest joys in life were her family and friends. When she wasn’t busy at her family summer business, she enjoyed working as a nurse’s aide at York Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bob; her children, Ruthann F. Lichtenwalner and her husband, Aaron W., of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Robert T. Fox Jr. and his wife, Helen G., of Bowdoinham, Jean Fox Johns and her husband, Kenneth H., of York, Steven P. Fox of Hampton, N.H., and Peter L. Fox and his wife, Carol Cook Fox, of York; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The youngest of eight children, she was predeceased by her six brothers and one sister.

FOX - Matilda (Tillie) Fox, of 148 Nubble Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 2, 2002, in Biddeford, Maine. She was a member of the First Parish Church of York, Maine, where a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002. Burial services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the New Gibson Cemetery, Pelham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Memorial Fund, First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Robert W. Cook

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. - Robert W. Cook, 65, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford, after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Margaret A. (Martinelli) Cook and son of the late James Robert and the late Jane (Birkhead) Cook.

Born in Franklin, N.H., he grew up in Bridgewater and lived in Plaistow, N.H., before moving to Fairhaven three years ago.

He graduated from New Hampton Preparatory School in 1955 and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Plymouth College in New Hampshire. He graduated with a double master’s in education from Keene State College and the University of New Hampshire.

He was employed by Sanborn Regional High School, Kingston, N.H., as English department head, assistant principal, and assistant superintendent prior to his employment as international sales manager for Computer Resources, Barrington, N.H.

A member of the Christian Science Mother Church in Boston, he was a Charter Friend of the new Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity. He was also a member and Sunday school teacher in Manchester, N.H., and more recently a member of the New Bedford Christian Science Church. His humanity to his fellow man was an inspiration to many.

For many years, he was an avid international adventure traveler in the jungles and rivers of Costa Rica, through the ruins of Machu Pichu and around the world through Russia, China, Thailand, Morocco, Egypt and Spain. He enjoyed white-water rafting and kayaking, international bicycle touring, sailing, skiing, hiking, camping and fishing.

A loving, devoted family man, he is survived by his wife, Margaret A. (Martinelli) Cook of Fairhaven; three daughters, Sharrol Leeann Gianatassio and her husband, Michael, of Deerfield, N.H., Wendy Sue Cardozo and her husband, John, of Plaistow, N.H., and Pamela June Correira and husband Joe Jr. of Bedford, N.H.; two stepsons, Matthew Slaney of Newton, and Philip Slaney and his wife, Brenda, of North Attleboro; eight grandchildren, Heather Curtin and her husband, Jon, Steven, A.J. and Nicholas Correira, Johnson and Maria Cardozo, Meghan and Abigail Slaney; and two great-grandchildren, Branden and Alexus Curtin.

He was predeceased by one grandchild, Rock Gianatassio.

COOK - Robert W. Cook, 65, of New Bedford, Mass., died Oct. 29, 2002. A private memorial service was held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Camp Mowglis for the Robert W. Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 9, Hebron, NH 03214.
