Warren H. Caswell

RYE - Warren H. Caswell, 83, of 121 Washington Road, and a winter resident of Florida for the last 15 years, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at his home.

Born in Rye on April 20, 1919, he was a son of the late Chester W. and Astrid (Swensson) Caswell. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire on May 25, 1941. He was a World War II United States Army veteran, serving under General Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he was employed as a lift operator and truck driver for Rand Lumber in Rye. He was a lifelong avid lobsterman out of Rye Harbor and for many years ran a farm stand in Rye.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Rising Star Masonic Lodge #47 of Newmarket and was an avid gardener.

He was predeceased by his wife, Althea (Willey) Caswell; and friend Helen Macewich.

Survivors include his brother, Thurston H. Caswell of Venice, Fla.; his sister, Josephine E. French of Weston, Mass; four nephews; and eight grandnieces and grandnephews.

CASWELL - Warren H. Caswell, 83, of 121 Washington Road, Rye, and a winter resident of Florida, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services at 6:45 p.m. by Rising Star Masonic Lodge #47 of Newmarket. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the World War II Veterans War Memorial, American Battle Commission, P.O. Box 96766, Washington, DC, 20090-6766.

Dorothy L. (Thompson) Vickery

RYE - Dorothy L. (Thompson) Vickery, 82, of 395 Washington Road, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Webster at Rye Nursing Home.

She was born in Dover on July 13, 1920, a daughter of the late William J. and Sarah J. (McGowan) Thompson, and was a graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1938.

She was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, a past member of the altar guild, a member of St. Martha’s Guild, and was founder of the Greenland Junior Women’s Club.

While raising her family and being active in the community, she assisted her husband daily in the operation of his contracting business.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen I. Vickery of Rye; daughter Carol Ann Sanderson and her husband, Paul, of Greenland; three grandchildren, Beth A. Sanderson of Middlebury, Vt., Laura L. Sanderson of Greenland, and Gregory T. Sanderson of Greenland; one sister, Lucille Thompson of Dover; and nephew William T. Thompson of Rochester.

She was predeceased by her brother, William Thompson.

VICKERY - Dorothy L. (Thompson) Vickery, 82, of 395 Washington Road, Rye, died Nov. 4, 2002. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald

GREENLAND - Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald, 90, of 480 Great Bay Road, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Born in Valentine, Neb., on Dec. 4, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Burton and Rachel (Breuklander) Brackett. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1930.

She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and the Women’s Alliance of the church. She enjoyed knitting and sewing and loved to donate things she had knitted to the church Christmas fair.

She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore L. Fitzgerald; sister Helen Monaghan; and two brothers, Harvey and Donald Brackett.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth R. Fitzgerald of Greenland, and Nancy Fulford of Portsmouth; one son, Theodore R. Fitzgerald and his wife, Kay, of Greenland; two grandchildren, Dr. Linda Strout of Falmouth, Maine, and Howard T. White of Atlanta, Ga.; seven stepgrandchildren, Susan Koury of Mansfield, Mass., Jean Yurtseven of Rochester, John Fulford and Robert Fulford, both of Rockland, Mass., Mark Fulford of Fayetteville, N.C., Sandra Papalardo of Virginia, and Kim Johnson of North Conway; three great-grandchildren; her sister Janet McGhee of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

FITZGERALD - Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald, 90, of 480 Great Bay Road, Greenland, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road, Greenland. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Greenland Community Congregational Church. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Leonard L. "Lenny" Gale

PORTSMOUTH - Leonard L. "Lenny" Gale, 56, of 1338 Woodbury Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Medford, Mass., on Nov. 21, 1945, the son of Harvey L. and Jacqueline B. (Binford) Gale.

He served in the United States Navy, and he was formerly employed as a shift manager for the Dexter House in Malden, Mass.

Besides his wife of 14 years, Carol A. (Gregoire) Gale, survivors include his five children, Jacqueline A. Gale, Michele Gale, Tracy Rogers, Christine Gale, and Melissa Gale, all of Malden, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Ashley, Robert, Jamila, Rebecca, DJ, Nicole and Walter; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ellen Gale.

GALE - Leonard L. "Lenny" Gale, 56, of 1338 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Nancy Bunning

DURHAM - Nancy Bunning, 74, of 18 Riverview Road, died Nov. 5, 2002, at home after a valiant fight with cancer.

Well known locally for her piano playing and writing, she was born May 26, 1928, in Troy, N.Y., the daughter of Paul and Clarice Knox.

She graduated from St. Agnes Preparatory School in Slingerlands, N.Y., and Colorado Women’s College.

Her short story "Twist of the Twig" appears in "Currents IV," the latest book featuring prize-winning writing published by the Seacoast Writers Association. She was a longtime president of the Tri-River Writers Group.

A professional pianist, and member of the Seacoast Jazz Society, she frequently performed her own arrangements at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Durgin Park restaurant near Faneuil Hall, as well as at a variety of locations in the Seacoast area. Two of her original compositions were performed recently before a large audience in Olympia, Wash., by her granddaughter Caitlin.

Her friends knew her as an adventurer who was always game. To the amazement of onlookers, she rode an ostrich during a recent tour of South Africa and on a previous trip rode on the subways of Moscow, Russia, at midnight rather than miss the opportunity.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A former dance instructor, she was also a member of the National Ballroom Dance Association.

She is survived by her husband, Ernst; her son, Paul Bunning; daughter-in-law Bonnie; two granddaughters, Jessie Bunning and Caitlin Bunning of Olympia, Wash.; and her sister-in-law, Ursula Doerner of Ueberlingen, Germany.

BUNNING - Nancy Bunning, 74, of Durham, died Nov. 5, 2002. She donated her body to medical research, and at her request there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Arthur R. LaMontagne

HAMPTON BEACH - Arthur R. LaMontagne, 77, of 15 P Street, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Pembroke on Jan. 5, 1925, a son of Hector V. "Vic" and Alzema (Thibedeau) LaMontagne. He had resided at Hampton Beach since the mid-1940s and wintered for 15 years in Kissimmee, Fla.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

In 1950, he built the Blue Jay Motel at Hampton Beach, which he operated, with his wife, Diana, for 34 years, before passing the business on to their daughter. He served for 25 years as a call fireman for the Hampton Beach Fire Department.

He attended Manchester’s Central High School, was a 14-year member of the Kissimmee Lodge of Elks, a 35-year member of the Portsmouth Country Club, a 57-year member of the Hampton American Legion Post #35, and a charter member of the World War II National Memorial Foundation. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish and a charter member of its Holy Name Society.

Family members include his wife of 56 years, Diana D. (Gagne) LaMontagne of Hampton Beach; three sons, Arthur F. "Skip" LaMontagne of Exeter, Eric A. LaMontagne of Raymond, and Michael J. LaMontagne of Berwick, Maine; a daughter, Mary LaMontagne of Hampton Beach; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Col. Edward J. LaMontagne of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his grandson Christian E. LaMontagne in 1989; a brother; and two sisters.

LaMONTAGNE - Arthur R. LaMontagne, of 15 P Street, Hampton Beach, died Nov. 4, 2002. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to either Sacred Heart School, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842; or to Seacoast Toy Bank, c/o Hampton Fire Department, 64 Ashworth Ave., Hampton, NH 03842. Roland N. Neves

NORTH HAMPTON - Roland N. Neves, 72, of 10 Meadowfox Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Dec. 25, 1929, the son of the late John and Debora (Couto) Neves, and was a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School. He had resided in North Hampton for the past nine years, having moved from Goffstown.

He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was the founder and president of Hygienic Technologies, a wholesale distributor of building maintenance supplies.

He was politically active for many years in the Republican Party on the local, state and national levels. He worked on three of Senator Bob Smith’s campaigns and on Craig Benson’s campaign for governor. While in Massachusetts, he worked on the senatorial campaigns of Brooks, Volpe and Richardson. He was chairman and founder of the North Hampton Forever Committee, and a former member of both the North Hampton Conservation Committee and the North Hampton Planning Board. He was the first president of the North Hampton Businessmen’s Association.

Family members include his wife of 47 years, Margaret F. (Mulleague) Neves of North Hampton; a son, Michael S. Neves of Mendham, N.J.; two daughters, Deborah Talbott of Gorham, Maine, and Elizabeth Whittier of Taylor, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

NEVES - Roland N. Neves, 72, of 10 Meadowfox Road, North Hampton, died Nov. 6, 2002. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Michelle Renee Norek

DOVER - Michelle Renee Norek, 21, of 34 Grove St., formerly of Garrison Drive in Eliot, Maine, died suddenly on Nov. 5, 2002, at her home.

Born on May 30, 1981, in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, she was a daughter of Richard and Edith Marciniak.

She attended grammar school in Saudi Arabia and started her high school career at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., where she was the captain of the softball team. She spent her senior year of high school at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, where she was active in the sports program, excelling as a member of the swim team, and went on to attend the University of Maine in Farmington.

Growing up, she and her family enjoyed their time spent together traveling to many parts of the world.

She worked as a dental assistant and as an associate at Bass Outlet in Kittery, Maine. In the summer, she also worked for the Spinney Creek Shellfish Company of Eliot, Maine.

She enjoyed playing pool and competed in pool tournaments at Legends in Portsmouth.

Her smile and sense of adventure were infectious, adding joy to the lives of so many people who knew and loved her. She had a deep love of art, enjoying her time spent painting and sharing her work with others.

She was a communicant of St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery, Maine.

She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, including her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Norek of Eliot, Maine; her sister, Catherine Norek of Eliot, Maine; her brothers, Michael Norek and his wife, Colleen, of Quincy, Mass., and Gregory Norek and his partner, John Riley, of Brookline, Mass.; her maternal grandparents, John and Irene Marciniak of Schenectady, N.Y.; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and her niece, Jessica.

NOREK - Michelle R. Norek, 21, of 34 Grove St., Dover, died suddenly on Nov. 5, 2002, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at her church, St. Raphael Parish Church, on Whipple Road in Kittery, Maine, with a collation to follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Friends are invited to visit with Michelle’s family from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only; donations may be made in her memory to the Michelle Renee Norek Memorial Fund, c/o St. Thomas Aquinas High School, 197 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820. Charles Vocca

KITTERY, Maine - Charles Vocca, 85, died at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, after a period of failing health.

Born Cosmo Salvator Vocca in Newton, Mass., Jan. 31, 1917, he was the son of Luigi and Mary (Salipante) Vocca and had been a resident here since 1948.

The real Charlie Vocca was a well-known local merchant, retiring in 1979. He was a member for 40 years of the Warwick Club, the Portsmouth Rotary Club and the Cape Neddick Country Club. He was a former member of the Kittery Lions Club and the Wentworth Fairways.

He was the husband of the late Ruth (Taylor) Vocca.

Survivors include one son, Peter Vocca and his wife, Ursula, of Concord; three grandchildren, Ann Marie Vocca of Concord, and Juliana Chakrabarti and Elisa Vocca, both of Mount Laurel, N.J.; and a sister, Phyllis Palmer of Rye.

VOCCA - Charles Vocca, 85, of Kittery, Maine, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Stephanie Lynn Sawyer

PORTSMOUTH - Stephanie Lynn Sawyer, 39, of 8 Beechstone, died suddenly at her home on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002.

Born in Grand Island, Neb., on June 30, 1963, she was the daughter of Jean (Hagman) Campbell of Portsmouth and Retired Air Force Col. Jimmie R Campbell of Seabrook.

She moved to Portsmouth from Wichita, Kan., more than two years ago and was employed at Café Espresso. She took a keen interest in people and was very fond of animals of all types. Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Christopher T. Campbell of Maize, Kan.; and two sisters, Michele R. Kelly of Reston, Va., and Alyssa Coen of Bedford.

SAWYER - Stephanie Lynn Sawyer, 39, of 8 Beechstone, in Portsmouth, died Nov. 4, 2002. Visiting hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A private funeral service will be held for the family.
