Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald

GREENLAND - Funeral services for Clara I. (Brackett) Fitzgerald, 90, of 480 Great Bay Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, Wednesday, with services held at the Greenland Community Congregational Church. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated. Todd Monsell was organist.

In attendance were members of the church, including members of the Women’s Alliance.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.

Bearers were Michael Strout, Tom Monaghan, Douglas Melanson and Darin Melanson.

Geary A. Hurd

HAMPTON - Geary A. Hurd, 76 of 3 Old Stage Road, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born at his residence in Hampton on Nov. 26, 1925, the son of the late Leander Geary and Flora Belle (Johnson) Hurd.

A lifelong Hampton resident, Mr. Hurd operated the last dairy farm in town, a business started by his father, and which will continue with his sons.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hampton Academy and a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church.

He was a 50-year member of Star in the East Lodge #59 of Exeter and past chairman of the Rockingham County Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service.

Family members include his wife of 41 years, Gwen (Remal) Hurd and two sons, Steven Hurd, and his wife, Sheryl, and Kevin Hurd, all of Hampton; two granddaughters, Morgan Hurd and Leanne Hurd; and several cousins.

HURD - Geary A. Hurd of 3 Old Stage Road, Hampton died Nov. 8, 2002. Services will be held at the Hampton United Methodist Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in the High Street Cemetery. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842 or to the Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

Inez E. Heeney

QUINCY, Mass. - Inez E. (Sanborn) Heeney, 89, of Quincy, Mass., formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Hancock Park in Quincy, Mass.

She was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Saco, Maine, the daughter of Harold and Lorena (Perkins) Sanborn.

Mrs. Heeney was a homemaker who enjoyed time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, John B. Heeney.

Mrs. Heeney is survived by two daughters, Mary H. Cole of Quincy, and Ann L. Heeney of Damascus, Md. She is also survived by three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

HEENEY - Inez E. (Sanborn) Heeney, 89, of Quincy, Mass., formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Tree Society, 149 Front St., Bath, ME 04530. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, Maine.

Norman K. Powers

EAST WAKEFIELD - Norman K. Powers Sr., 78, of Tanager Road on Balch Lake in East Wakefield, died at home early Wednesday morning, Nov. 6, 2002.

Born March 14, 1924, in Bucksport, Maine, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mildred (Ulmer) Powers. He resided in East Wakefield since 1976, having come from Reading, Mass.

A United States Naval veteran of World War II, Norman was a structural engineer, employed with Cleverton, Varney and Pike in Boston and, prior to retirement, with Earl Brown at the Beaver Corp.

A talented woodworker with architectural skills, he designed many homes in this area.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred M. (Jackson) Powers.

Mr. Powers is survived by three children: Norman K. Powers Jr. of Corona, Calif.; his twin sister, Nancy M. Powers of Newburyport, Mass., and Karen E. Powers of Portsmouth; a grandson, Keith A. Powers of Corona, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Edith Howell of Portland, Maine.

He was predeceased by his son, David A. Powers of Corona, Calif., on Oct. 23, 2002.

POWERS - Norman K. Powers Sr., 78, of Tanager Road on Balch Lake in East Wakefield, died Nov. 6, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the United Methodist Church on Main Street in (Sanbornville) Wakefield. Guilhermina Proulx

MANCHESTER - Guilhermina "Della" Proulx, 84, of Manchester, died Nov. 7, 2002, at Elliot Hospital.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on Nov. 7, 1918, she was the daughter of Jose and Virginia (de Castro) Fernandes. She had lived in Manchester most of her life.

She worked for many years as a seamstress for the Modern Bride and Pandora Industries.

She was a communicant of St. Pius X Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Proulx, in 1997.

She is survived by her children, Janice Yost of Stratham, and Douglas Proulx of Concord; two sisters, Mary McDonough of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Theodora Bukowski of Manchester; three brothers, Manuel Fernandes of Hinsdale, John Fernandes of Hooksett, Edward Fernandes of Manchester; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PROULX - Guilhermina "Della" Proulx, 84, of Manchester, died Nov. 7, 2002. Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at the Lambert Funeral Home and Crematory, 1799 Elm St., corner of North Street, Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, at St. Pius X Church, 575 Candia Road, Manchester. Burial will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 474 Goffstown Road, Manchester. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Pius X Church Building Fund, 475 Candia Road, Manchester, NH 03103.

Bettina A. Butler

SEABROOK - Bettina A. "Betty" Butler, 70, of 59 South Main Street, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at her home.

She was born in Seabrook on Nov. 4, 1932, a daughter of the late Leonard and Jennie (Miller) Dobson.

Mrs. Butler was a graduate of Newburyport High School. She worked as an assembler for Complex, a medical supply company in Stratham. She also worked at area shellfish businesses and at one time made shoes in her home.

She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at the Rand Memorial Church, an avid bingo player and enjoyed going to the casinos in Connecticut. She was the wife of Ronald G. Butler, Sr., for 50 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Bricky A. Butler of Seabrook; three daughters, Jennie A. Olean-Jordan of Stratham, Diane A. Roberts of Nashua, Coreen A. Perkins of Seabrook; three sisters, Edith Fowler of Newburyport, Mass., Eleanor Dobson of Seabrook, Florence Abrasambra of Methuen, Mass.; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Ronald G. Butler, Jr., predeceased her in 1984.

BUTLER - Bettina A. "Betty" Butler of 59 South Main Street, Seabrook, died Nov. 8, 2002. Services will be held at the Rand Memorial Church, Seabrook, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. Barbara L. Durant

HAMPTON - Barbara L. Durant, 68, of 235 Drakeside Road, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at her home.

She was born in Newburyport, Mass., Sept. 18, 1934, the daughter of the late Marion (Merrill) Sweeney Vovos and the late Fred J. Sweeney. She was a graduate of Newburyport High School with the Class of 1952.

Mrs. Durant worked for the Hampton schools’ food and nutrition program, as a cook manager at the Center School. In her earlier years she worked in the cafeteria at Winnacunnet High School. She retired in the spring of 2002 with over 25 years of service.

She was a member of the New Hampshire Food Service Association and was past president of its East Chapter. In 1995 she was the recipient of the Silver Medal National Championship Award from the American Culinary Federation.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton, a member of the United Methodist Women’s Club, served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and served as past president of the former Hampton Mothers Circle, when raising her children.

Family was most important to her. She also took an interest in the students she met at school, enjoyed walking the beach, loved the mountains and, of course, cooking.

She was the wife of Arthur W. Durant for 49 years.

In addition to her husband, surviving family members include one daughter, Susan J. Faro of Hampton; two sons, James H. Durant of Lee, Kevin S. Durant and his wife, Deanne, of Hampton; her stepfather, Nick Vovos of Salisbury, Mass.; one brother, Ralph Sweeney of Salisbury; six grandchildren, Jeremy Ross, Jessica Ross, Renee Ellis, Ryan Durant, Jenel Faro, and Emily Durant; one great-grandson, Austin Ross; two aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A grandson, Clinton J. Durant predeceased her in 1987.

DURANT - Barbara L. Durant, 68, of 235 Drakeside Road, Hampton, died Nov. 8, 2002. Services will be held at the United Methodist Church, Hampton, Monday at 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours. If desired, donations may be made to either the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842 or to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02116. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Leonard L. Gale

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Leonard L. Gale, 56, of 1338 Woodbury Ave., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by Mike Thompson and Al Brown. The American flag was folded and presented to Mr. Gale’s wife, Carol.

Roland N. Neves

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Roland N. Neves, 72, of 10 Meadowfox Road, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael Griffin, senior priest, was celebrant assisted by Deacon Paul Testa.

Members the Holy Name Society served as acolytes. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

The pall was extended over the casket by his grandsons, Stephen and David Neves. His son, Michael Neves, placed the crucifix on the casket The readings were offered by his daughters, Elizabeth Whittier and Deborah Talbott. Michael Neves and his wife, Sherry, presented the gifts to the altar.

The eulogy was delivered by Rev. Garrett Lear, pastor of the Well of Living Water Christian Fellowship of North Hampton.

The North Hampton Police Department escorted the funeral cortege to the Center Cemetery in North Hampton, where committal prayers were offered by Deacon Testa and Rev. Lear. The United States flag, which lay on the casket, was presented to his widow, Margaret F. (Mulleague) Neves.

Pallbearers were Michael Neves, David Neves, Stephen Neves, Thomas Talbott, Jack Keane, and Kevin Keane.

Warren H. Caswell

RYE - A memorial service for Warren H. Caswell, 83, of 121 Washington Road, was held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Thursday.

The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by his nephew, David Caswell.

An honor guard was formed from a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Casualty Area Command in Fort Drum, N.Y., including Staff Sgt. Kelvin Brady and Spc. Leslie Hill. Taps was sounded and the American flag was presented to Mr. Caswell’s sister, Josephine E. French, by Staff Sgt. Brady.

Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by Rev. Gum.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Thursday by the Rising Star Lodge #47 F & AM of Newmarket, including Haven H. Hayes, past master; N. Alan Rollins, senior warden; Richard A. Gilbert, Sr., chaplain; and Mark S. Weir, secretary.

Also assisting in services was David Caswell, junior deacon pro tem of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F & AM of Portsmouth.

Arthur R. LaMontagne

HAMPTON - The funeral for Arthur R. LaMontagne, 77, husband of Diana D. (Gagne) LaMontagne of 15 P Street, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Scott J. St. Louis, associate pastor of St. Michael Church in Exeter, was celebrant.

Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. The readings were offered by Sr. Theresa Malouin. The gifts were presented to the altar by Mr. LaMontagne’s daughter and son, Mary LaMontagne and Eric LaMontagne. His son Michael LaMontagne delivered the eulogy.

The Holy Name Society acted as acolytes and its large delegation of members formed an honor guard at the end of the Mass. A delegation of firefighters from the Hampton Fire Department formed an honor guard as people arrived at the church.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with committal payers offered by Rev. St. Louis.

HANLON - Catherine (O’Brien) Hanlon, 89, of 83 Alehson St Rye died November 8,2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours are at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Church Women’s Club, 845 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Catherine Hanlon

RYE - Catherine Hanlon, 89, of 83 Alehson St., died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Feb. 18, 1913, she was the daughter of William and Katherine (MacDonald) O’Brien. She attended St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth before moving to Rye in 1989.

She was an active member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Women’s Club. She enjoyed golfing and was a member of Rockingham Country Club; she also traveled extensively in her later years.

The widow of Harry R. Hanlon, who died in December of 2001, she is survived by her four daughters, Elizabeth Hanlon Keniston of Stratham, Kathryn Hanlon and Nancy Hanlon, both of Rye, and Judy Hanlon of Framingham, Mass.; two grandchildren, Stefan Keniston of Rye and Katherine Keniston of Burlington, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

Leila J. Smith

KITTERY, Maine - Leila J. Smith, 68, died Nov. 10, 2002, at York Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Rutland, Vt., on May 30, 1934, she was a daughter of Harold Rueben Reynolds and Leola (May) Reynolds. She attended R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery, graduating as valedictorian in 1952. She then attended Fisher Jr. College until 1953.

She married Donald Dean Smith on Oct. 15, 1955.

She was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a budget officer for 38 years before retiring in 1994.

She was a past member of the Military Comptrollers Association, a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a member and secretary/treasurer of the Kittery Lions Club - she also served in various capacities at the district level, including cabinet secretary/treasurer - and she was a former member of the Naval Civilian Managers Association.

Besides her husband, she leaves her brother, Wayne Reynolds and his wife, Jeanne, of Berwick; a son, Gary Smith and his fiancée, Laverne Scott, of Barbarton, Ohio; a daughter, Muriel Brown and her husband, Dana, of Wooster, Ohio; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Hards and Ruth Bryant, both of Findlay, Ohio, Elaine Beach of Arlington, Ohio, and Barbara McCoy of Van Wert, Ohio; two grandchildren, Cassie Brown and Teanna Smith; and numerous nephews and nieces.

SMITH - Leila J. Smith, 68, of Kittery, Maine, died Nov. 10, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Second Christian Church, on Government Street, Kittery. Pastor Brad Hurst will officiate. Interment will follow at Orchard Grove Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to York Hospital, York, ME 03909.
