Evelyn Neukom
PORTSMOUTH - Evelyn Neukom, 94, died Nov. 9, 2002.
She was the widow of Oscar Neukom, who for many years was a judge at the Portsmouth Municipal Court. Born in Portsmouth on Oct. 1, 1908, she was the daughter of Frederick and Alice Mugeridge Grace of Kittery, Maine. She graduated from Portsmouth High School and the Plymouth Business School of Portsmouth. She was employed for a number of years as a legal secretary. A member of the North Congregational Church of Portsmouth, she served as vice president of the Graffort Club.
She is survived by a cousin, Harold Clark, of Portsmouth, and several other cousins.
NEUKOM - Evelyn Neukom, 94, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 9, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Mamie F. Varney
KITTERY, Maine - Mamie F. Varney, 92, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at her home.
Born in Kittery on June 18, 1910, she was a daughter of William and Mamie (Middlebrook) Hurley. She attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the Class of 1929. She furthered her education at Farmington State Teachers College, becoming a schoolteacher.
She served the community she was born and raised in as a teacher and school principal for more than 31 years, a career and children she truly loved. She taught and was the principal at the Wentworth Dennett School in Kittery and also taught primarily fifth grade at Frisbee Middle School.
Active her entire life, she was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery, and the Altrusa Club of Kittery. She enjoyed membership in the Maine Retired Teachers Association and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, meetings of which she attended monthly.
She enjoyed her time spent playing bridge both at the Portsmouth Country Club and at many friends’ homes. She was an avid gardener and most recently became interested in using the computer, e-mailing friends and retrieving information from the World Wide Web. Her first love was her family, who will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Basil and Mary (Pento) Varney of Portsmouth, N.H.; a grandson and his wife, Rodney and Maureen Varney of Portsmouth, N.H.; her great-granddaughter, Kayleen Varney of Portsmouth, N.H.; and a sister-in-law, Audrey Hurley of Kentucky.
She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Varney; her sister, Alice Hurley; and her brothers, William Hurley and Edward Hurley.
VARNEY - Mamie F. Varney, 92, of 12 Water St., Kittery, Maine, died Nov. 11, 2002, at her home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. Friends are invited to visit with the Varney family from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service at the funeral home. Gerard J. Grassie
SOMERSWORTH - Gerard J. Grassie, 59, of 5 Bernier St., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover, after a brief illness.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1943, in Rochester and was the son of John and Jeannette (Tanguay) Grassie. He was raised in Somersworth and was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School, Class of 1961. He went on to further his education in Manchester, taking up computer science.
Prior to his retirement in 1999, he had been employed as a computer programmer with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with more than 35 years of service.
Prior to his career with the Navy Yard, he had worked for the University of New Hampshire.
He was very active in hockey. For the past 25 years he served as director of the Seacoast Hockey League and the Seacoast Spartans. He also coached youth hockey and coached baseball with the Somersworth-Berwick Little League and Senior League.
He loved golf, a hobby he enjoyed after his retirement.
Family members include his wife of 36 years, Patricia (Connelly) Grassie of Somersworth; a son, Christopher Grassie and his wife, Sherri, of Somersworth; a daughter, Tricia Lallemand and her husband, Gerard, of Somersworth; two brothers, Richard J. Grassie and Roland Grassie, both of Somersworth; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel (Sylvia) Costanzo of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Steven (Gloria) Entenmann of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Christina Grassie, both of Somersworth; and several nephews and nieces.
GRASSIE - Gerard J. Grassie, 59, of Somersworth, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Leo Catholic Church, Gonic. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. Robert A. Blake
KITTERY POINT, Maine - A funeral for Robert A. Blake, who died Nov. 2, 2002, at his home, was held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. The service was conducted at his church, the First Christian Church of Kittery Point, with the Rev. Duane Kellogg officiating. Kind words of remembrance were spoken, and the Rev. Kellogg offered Scripture readings and a eulogy. The service was attended by family, friends and neighbors as well as former co-workers. The service continued at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, where the Rev. Kellogg offered committal prayers. All were invited for a time of sharing and remembrance at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Michele Renee Norek
DOVER - A Mass of Christian burial was held for Michele Renee Norek, formerly of Eliot, Maine, who died at her home on Nov. 5, 2002. The service was held Saturday at her church, St. Raphael Parish Church in Kittery, Maine, with the Rev. Real Nadeau officiating. The congregation was led in song by the church choir accompanied by the church organist, Alfred "Butch" Lapointe. Words of remembrance were offered by her sister, Catherine Norek, and her brothers, Michael and Gregory Norek. In attendance were many family members, neighbors who have been so supportive to her family, classmates from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and co-workers. Gifts were offered to the altar by her sister and brothers. After the Mass, all were invited to a time of refreshment and sharing in the church parish hall. The service continued with a committal service on Sunday at Brooks Memorial Park with the Rev. Nadeau offering committal prayers and blessing her final place of rest. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
HEENEY - Inez E. (Sanborn) Heeney, 89, of Quincy, Mass., formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Nov. 7, 2002. A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Tree Society, 149 Front St., Bath, ME 04530. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
Mildred L. "Ma" (Spinney) Pizz
PORTSMOUTH - Mildred L. "Ma" (Spinney) Pizz, 78, of 1600 Islington St., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital, surrounded by all her loving family.
She was born in Portsmouth on April 4, 1924, a daughter of Frank W. and A. Viola (Hersey) Spinney. She was a member of the North Congregational Church of Portsmouth and had belonged to the Blue Birds, Campfire Girls and Rogers Mission of the church. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1942, and had worked at Woolworth’s during high school. In 1946 she married Stanley Pizz; they were married for 40 years before his death in 1986.
She was a loving, caring and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed knitting sweaters and mittens for the church fair and always made sure her grandchildren had homemade sweaters and blankets. She also enjoyed reading and telling stories. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her three sons, Richard Pizz and his wife, Linda, of Epping, Frank Pizz and his companion Patty of Portsmouth, and Kevin Pizz and his companion Samantha of Portsmouth; two daughters, Diane Pizz of Massachusetts and Janice Brown and her husband, Russ, of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Brightman and her husband, Russ, of Greenland and Florida; a brother, Francis Spinney and his wife, Dawn, of Portsmouth; several nieces and nephews; and her devoted friend for 60 years Helen Foley of Sanford, Maine.
She was predeceased by a son, Paul Stephen Pizz, who died in 1979; and twin infant daughters, Janet and Janice.
PIZZ - Mildred L. "Ma" (Spinney) Pizz, 78, of 1600 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 12, 2002. At Mildred’s request, private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. John Gilmore Cowan
NEW CASTLE - John Gilmore Cowan, 80, of 168 Wentworth Road, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born in Mound City, Mo., on Aug. 15, 1921, he was the son of Ivan and Mildred (Meyer) Cowan. He served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during World War II and Korea. He was educated at the Colorado School of Mines and graduated as a professional engineer of petroleum.
He worked for several major oil companies, including Texaco and ARCO, in the exploration and producing departments. Subsequently, he had his own consulting company in Denver, Colo.
He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Submarine Vets of America, the Propeller Club, and the Portsmouth Atheneum. He was also a charter member of the New Castle Historical Society and a volunteer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth (Desmond) Cowan; six children: Mary Schau of Seattle, Wash., Bridget Vickers of Letchworth, England, Margaret Cole of Champione, Switzerland, John Cowan Jr. of Seattle, Wash., Sheila LeBarge of Lee, and Joseph Cowan of Kansas City, Mo.; and 14 grandchildren.
COWAN - John Gilmore Cowan, 80, of New Castle, died on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery in New Castle.
Leah Mae Perkins
PORTSMOUTH - Leah Mae Perkins, 77, of 3205 Lafayette Road, #45, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, following a courageous battle with cancer.
The daughter of Clyde D. and Emma (Trunde) Murphy, she was born on March 6, 1925 in Denver, Colo., and raised in Los Angeles, Calif. She moved to Danvers, Mass., following her marriage to the late Robert H. Perkins. The Perkinses moved to Portsmouth in 1966.
During her life she was active in the Danvers Mothers’ March on Polio and later the Portsmouth Meals on Wheels program. She enjoyed life and cherished time spent at the kitchen table with children, grandchildren and special friends. Her stories of life on the farm in Colorado entertained generations of family. She will always be remembered for her cooking, affectionately referred to as "Grammy’s recipes."
She is survived by her four children: Mary E. Nylund and her husband, Thomas, of Annapolis, Md., Thomas R. Perkins of Portsmouth, David A. Perkins and his wife, Leanne, of Portsmouth, and Dianne L. McCoomb and her husband, Thomas, of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lester Murphy and his wife, Margaret, of San Diego, Calif.
She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Murphy.
Her sense of humor and strength in adversity will long be remembered.
PERKINS - Leah Perkins, 77, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Ellen H. Sterling
KITTERY, Maine - Ellen H. Sterling, 92, formerly of 19 Water St., died Nov. 11, 2002, at Sentry Hill in York after a period of failing health.
Born in Kittery on Feb. 25, 1910, she was a daughter of Frank and Alice (Hanscom) Frisbee and attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the Class of 1929. She and her husband, Alfred Sterling, enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage in their home on Water Street in Kittery, where they raised their family.
She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery. She enjoyed membership in a number of organizations, including the Sarah Orne Jewett chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Kittery Women’s Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Portsmouth Yacht Club.
She is survived by her children: a daughter and her husband, Diane and Thomas Russell of Edmonds, Wash., and her son and his wife, Paul and Deborah Sterling of North Branford, Conn.; her grandchildren: Tracie Daddio of Magnolia, Del., Kevin Sterling of Hennesey, Nev., Britton Russell of Atlanta, Ga., and William Russell of Oregon; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler Russell, Tarra and Michael Daddio, and Hannah Sterling.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Sterling; and her brother, Solon Frisbee.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Funeral services for Lucy R. Rand, 92, formerly of Rye, N.H., were held Nov. 5, 2002.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church by the Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor.
The readings were given by Mary Amsler.
Burial was in the family lot in Central Cemetery in Rye, with the Rev. Jean conducting the committal.
Pallbearers were Joseph Senko, Thomas Senko, Douglas Browning, Woodrow Emerton, Roland Emerton and Roland Emerton Jr.
Bettina A. "Betty" Butler
SEABROOK - The funeral for Bettina A. "Betty" Butler, 71, of 59 South Main, who died Nov. 8, 2002, was held Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted in the Rand Memorial Church. The Rev. Bruce Pierce, pastor of Seabrook Church of Christ, officiated. Elizabeth J. Walton was organist. Burial followed in the Hillside Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Pierce. Pallbearers were Michael Butler, Bricky Butler, Lloyd Perkins, Wayne Perkins, William Fowler and John Beckman.
Barbara L. Durant
HAMPTON - Well-attended services for Barbara L. Durant, 68, of 235 Drakeside Road, who died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, were held on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor, officiated. Mary Oliver was organist, and Robert Howard directed the church choir. Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
E. Patricia Gary
LEE - E. Patricia Gary, 64, of 10 Decato Drive, died Nov. 12, 2002, at her home.
Born Oct. 6, 1938, in New York City, she was the daughter of Richard and Edith Gordon. She was raised on Long Island and was a graduate of Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
"Pat" and her husband, Ron, have been residents of the town of Lee for 32 years.
Pat practiced real estate for more than 25 years in the Durham area, and owned and operated Prudential Gary Real Estate since 1989. She was active within the Strafford County Board of Realtors, where her professionalism and integrity were respected by the real estate community and by the customers she faithfully served.
Her greatest joy was helping families find homes. She also did volunteer work with the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Ron Gary of Lee; two stepchildren, Guy Gary of San Diego, Calif., and Stacia Groen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Chelsea Groen and Austin Groen, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Alan Gordon of Dover; one sister, Barbara MacDonald of Toledo, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Pat was cherished by her family and loved by her friends. She is greatly missed already.
GARY - E. Patricia Gary, 64, of Lee, died Nov. 12, 2002. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.
