Margaret L. Maxfield

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Margaret Louise (Mayhew) Maxfield, 73, of Fort Pierce, died on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002.

Born in Claremont, N.H., on Jan. 27, 1929, the youngest child of Francis and Ida Colos Mahew, she attended Claremont schools.

She worked in the shoe shops of Claremont to help support her family during World War II. She worked in the shops until 1948, the year in which she met her future husband, Louis Maxfield. They were married on Oct. 2, 1949, and moved to Lemax Farm in North Hartland, Vt., where they resided at the family farm for the next 50 years. Sons, Lowell and Cecil were born in 1952 and 1954, respectively.

"Peggy" as she was known to most, was a supermom before the phrase was coined. She maintained a large house, cooking, raising a garden of vegetables and berries, as well as being a full-time partner in the work of the farm, from baling hay to balancing the checkbook and keeping the books. On more than one occasion on a summer’s day, she was known to bale 1,000 bales of hay late into the afternoon, then rush home to bake a shortcake, which she would cover with berries from the garden and have it all ready for the rest of the family when they came in from the barn at day’s end.

Her hands were seldom idle. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing fancy crewel work, crafts and knitting. Lowell and Cecil remember untold Christmases when Mom presented them with a handknit sweater, the patterns and colors of which they had been asked to pick out earlier in the year.

Mrs. Maxfield was a member of the United Methodist Church of White River Junction, Vt. and the Community United Methodist Church of Fort Pierce, though the North Hartland Community Church in Vt., where she was married, remained very special in her memory.

She was a woman of strong, quiet faith, a faith which served her well in numerous challenges she faced in her health. A breast cancer survivor since 1983, her faith helped her maintain a cheerful and positive attitude in the face of any difficulty. She and Louis, in later years, both developed their own quiet ministry of visiting the sick and helping friends, an activity which drew them closer to one another, as well as bringing them a deeper understanding of the power of faith in action.

A strong believer in the tenet that hard work brings rewards, Peggy was delighted to see one of those rewards manifest itself by her being able to spend longer and longer periods of time each winter in Fort Pierce, as she and Louis grew closer to their retirement years. She loved being in the warm weather of Florida and was extremely happy to have found such wonderful and devoted friends there, with whom many wonderful times were enjoyed.

Beloved by many, Peggy often found herself graciously playing the role of mother to many well beyond her biological family. Her sphere of influence reached into the lives of many, known and unknown to her, who considered her a mother or grandmother, depending on their age. Perhaps no greater testament to a life well lived exists than to know that one life has been positively touched by the presence of another. Peggy had ample appreciation from many, helping her to know that she had, indeed, touched their lives.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Louis; her son and daughter-in-law, Lowell and Carol of North Scottsdale, Ariz., son Cecil of Portsmouth, N.H.; and sister Janette Crossman, also of Portsmouth; numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom grieve her passing, yet celebrate the release of her spirit into the great mystery of what lies beyond this life.

A memorial service was held on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in the Community United Methodist Church, 3114 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, Fla. Interment will take place in the Hartland, Vt., Brick Church Cemetery on May 24, 2003.
