Robert Lozier

EXETER - Robert Lozier 77, passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Sunbridge Healthcare of Exeter after a long period of failing health.

Born in Orono, Maine, on July 18, 1925, he was the son of Adolph and Delia (Burton) Lozier.

He served his country during World War II as a member of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and serving in General MacArthur’s honor guard in Japan. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include one brother, Wilfred Lozier of Rye; three sisters, Geneva O’Connell and Joanne Morrill, both of Bangor, Maine, and Betty Pelletier of Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews.

LOZIER - Robert Lozier, 77, of Exeter died Nov. 22, 2002. A memorial service will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Friends invited.

Robert Calvin Smith

HAVERHILL, Mass. - Robert Calvin Smith, 77, of 148 Golden Hill Ave., Haverhill, died early Sunday morning at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Regina "Jackie" (Reynolds) Smith.

Born in Exeter, N.H., on Nov. 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles O. and Madeline D. (Chase) Smith, and had been a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1944, and graduated from New England Institute of Funeral Directing and Embalming in 1950. In the early 1960s, Mr. Smith became associated with the late Paul C. Rogers, becoming a senior vice president and partner with the family-owned funeral homes of Paul C. Rogers & Sons in the communities of Haverhill, Merrimac, Amesbury and Newburyport. After the death of Mr. Rogers in 1993, he continued his association with Paul’s sons, Gregory J. and Paul C. Jr., having been with the business more than 40 years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association, and was also a licensed embalmer in New Hampshire.

A member of the Riverside Memorial Church, he had formerly served as deacon and trustee. He was also a member of Star in the East Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Exeter and was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Portsmouth, Bektash Temple Shrine in Concord, N.H., and Patrol C, a Marching Unit of the Shrine.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Special Agent Reginald C. Smith, and wife Robin W., of Derby Line, Vt., Officer Todd J. Smith of the Haverhill Police Department and his wife Lisa A., Sgt. Brian S. Smith of the Haverhill Police Department and wife Melissa M., and Shelley D. Smith, all of Haverhill, as well as Robert T. Smith and wife Nancie of Ipswich; and Linda J. Smolack and husband Paul of Seabrook, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Oliver "Sandy" Smith and his wife Norma of Stratham, N.H.; one sister, Lois D. Taylor and husband William, of Rye, N.H.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

SMITH - Robert C. Smith, 77, of 148 Golden Hill Ave., Haverhill, Mass., and a lifelong funeral director, beloved husband of Regina "Jackie" (Reynolds) Smith, died Nov. 24, 2002, in Haverhill. Funeral services at Riverside Memorial Church, 286 Groveland St., Haverhill, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, N.H., will be 11:30 a.m. Friday. Calling hours at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 334 Main St., Haverhill, will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Masonic services will be conducted by the officers and members of Star in the East Lodge, 8 p.m. Tuesday. Merle R. Dewitt Sr

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Merle Roland DeWitt Sr., 58, of Haley Road in Kittery Point, died Sunday, November 24, 2002 in York Hospital.

Born on February 18, 1944, in Biddeford, Maine he was a son of George and Marion (Coleman) DeWitt, and attended local schools.

Mr. DeWitt served his country as a member of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam. Mr. DeWitt was awarded the Purple Heart along with a number of other awards for service to his country.

He was employed for a number of years by Port City Beverage and most recently as a handyman working for many homeowners in the area. He will be missed by so many who knew him, he was always willing to lend a hand, either cutting a neighbors lawn in the summer or clearing snow with his snow thrower in the winter. He was a member of the Kittery Fire Department for a number of years.

Mr. DeWitt enjoyed his membership in the American Legion of Portsmouth, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Portsmouth and the Disabled American Veteran’s Piscataqua Chapter No. 4 in Newington, where he was senior adjutant. He also volunteered his time for the chapter at the Frank Jones Center during bingo nights. He was also an avid NASCAR Busch Series racing fan.

He is survived by, his wife Geraldine (Brake) DeWitt of Kittery Point; two daughters Regina L. DeWitt of St. Louis, Mo. and Tina Hilton of Springvale, Maine; a son, Merle R. DeWitt Jr. and his wife Tricia of Belmont, N.H.; two bothers Stanley DeWitt of Conn., and George "Bud" DeWitt of Texas; two sisters Helen Boisvert of Calis, Maine and Marlene Lock of Conn; and four grandchildren Merle R. DeWitt III, Michele DeWitt, Shannon Hilton and Elijah Hilton.

DEWITT - Merle Rowland Dewitt Sr., 58, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Sunday Nov. 24, 2002 at York Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday Dec. 6, at the Church at Spruce Creek on Wilson Road in Kittery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Disabled American Veteran’s Piscataqua Chapter No. 4, 19 River Road Newington, NH 03801. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Methyl M. "Mety" Morrow

KITTERY, Maine - Methyl M. "Mety" Morrow, 80, of 59 Rogers Road, Kittery, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002 in Portsmouth after a period of failing health.

Born on Sept. 20, 1922 in Kittery in the home she lived in her entire life, she was the youngest of 12 children of Thomas M. and Minnie (Ham) Morrow.

She attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1939.

Ms. Morrow was employed for a time at the York County Trust on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a teller. Most of her working career was spent as a book- keeper and office manager for Lester Dorr Adjusters, where she spent over 30 years before retiring.

A dear friend to so many, her greatest love was her family. She most enjoyed spending time at camp on Mousam Lake, watching her nieces and nephews having fun and later, as they became adults, spending time with their children became treasured time for both.

She is survived by a sister and her husband Virginia and Sherman Higgins of Kittery and Norman "Bud" Morrow and his wife Della Morrow of Kittery; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, as well as very special friends Lucy and Steve Heguy of Rye, N.H.

MORROW - Methyl M. Morrow, 80, of 59 Rogers Road Kittery, Maine, died Saturday Nov. 23, 2002 in Portsmouth. A funeral service will be held on at noon on Friday Nov., 29, 2002 at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. Friends may visit with family from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Kittery Lions Club, c/o Linda Buckinger, 35 Main St., Kittery, ME 03904. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Edith Eldridge Weeks Bangert

BLOOMFIELD, New Mexico - Edith Eldridge Weeks Bangert, 86, of Bloomfield, passed away at her home on Nov. 22, 2002, after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Kittery, Maine, a daughter of Wesley and Lena (Frayherre) Eldridge. She graduated from Eliot High School.

She leaves three sons, Edward, Kenneth, and Bradley Weeks; daughters, Sandra Marcial, Nancy Olande, and Lori Sansaval; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Ashe; and a brother Frank Eldridge.

She was predeceased by a son, David, a brother Earl Eldridge, and sister, Frances Randall.

She will be lovingly remembered as a person of great spirit, which enabled her to overcome many obstacles.

Margaret A. Tornrose

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Margaret A. Tornrose, 87, formerly of 241 Washington Road, Rye, N.H., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare of Rochester, following a period of failing health.

Born June 23, 1915, in Fort Lee, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Axel W. and Margaret E. (Frisch) Tornrose. Mrs. Tornrose worked for several years as the manager of WWNH and WDNH radio stations. She was a member of the Altrusa Women’s Association.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Leeman, and husband Jerry of Marco Island, Fla.; her son, Lawrence Spellman of Rochester; grandchildren, Lea K. Sargent of Auburn, Maine, Douglas R. Lachapelle and wife Tracy of Sparks, Nev.; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Bethany Sargent of Auburn, Maine; and Jacob and Keri Lachapelle of Sparks, Nev.; and step-brother, Walter Kowalczyk and wife Theresa of North Hampton, N.H.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.

Mark K. Malconian

EXETER, N.H. - Mark K. Malconian, D.O., 48, of Colonial Way, died after a lengthy illness on Nov. 25, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1954, in Boston, Mass., graduating from Needham High School, where he was involved in athletics. He continued his education at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and the University of Health Sciences at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City, Mo. He had an internal medicine internship and anesthesiology residency with fellowship in cardio-thorasic anesthesia at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Malconian was a major in the U.S. Army and served on active duty for six years. During his military career he was a flight surgeon in the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.

He served as a medical researcher at the U.S. Institute of Environmental Medicine at Natick Labs, Natick, Mass., working on Operation Everest II. He also co-authored numerous articles and books on high altitude medicine and was on the staff of the New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Portland, Maine, and in his spare time enjoyed flying helicopters.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (MacPherson) Malconian of Exeter; one son, Daniel Richard Malconian, also of Exeter; one sister, Jayne Sweetser of Wellesley, Mass.; one brother, Richard Malconian of Me.; five nieces and nephews; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and Nancy MacPherson of Needham, Mass.; one brother-in-law, Earl and Nancy MacPherson of Needham, Mass.; one brother-in-law, Craig MacPherson of Exeter, N.H., and one sister-in-law, Joan MacPherson of Marlborough, N.H.

MALCONIAN - Mark K. Malconian, D.O., 48, of Colonial Way, Exeter, died on Nov. 25, 2002, at his home. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2 at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Christ Church on Pine St., Exeter. Burial with military honors will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.

MOORE - Lawrence M. Moore Sr. 78, of 23 Suzanne Dr., husband of Rose (McMahon) Moore, died November 20, 2002. A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church. Urn burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Friends are invited. Kimberley J. Ryan

KITTERY, Maine - Kimberley J. Ryan, 35, of Commercial Street, died suddenly on Nov. 24, 2002, at her home.

Born on March 29, 1967, in Stoneham, Mass., she attended schools in Conway, N.H., graduating from Kennett High School in 1985. She furthered her education at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in child and family studies and criminal justice. Her honors in college included Phi Upsilon Omicron and Pi Gamma Mu.

Her love of people and children drew her to her work as a child protective social worker for the Division for Children, Youth and Families in New Hampshire and later as a supervisor for CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, where she spent much of her time training others to help families in need.

An avid adventurer and lover of the out of doors, she had traveled extensively to enjoy hiking in the Peruvian Andes, New Zealand and many other places. Locally she enjoyed membership in tennis leagues and softball teams and recently took up playing soccer. One of her favorite accomplishments was her involvement with International Medical Equipment Collaborative, a group she worked with to establish a hospital in Mexico; she was able to visit the site of the hospital during its planning and eventual opening to service many under-privileged families.

She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her mother and stepfather, Deborah Ryan-Dolleman and Lloyd Dolleman of Eliot; her stepbrothers, Eli and Ethan Dolleman; her sister and brother-in-law, Staci Ryan-Prinz and Scott Prinz of Rye, N.H., and their children, Ryan and Kiley-Jean Prinz; her grandmother Doris Hodgdon of Madison, N.H.; her aunt and uncle, Betsy and Paul Eaton of Freedom, N.H., and their children, Barry and Jeannette Eaton; and her father, Frank Ryan.

RYAN - Kimberly J. Ryan, 35, of Commercial Street in Kittery, Maine, died suddenly on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at her home. A time of sharing and remembrance during which friends may visit with Kimberley’s family will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2002, at the J.S. Romeo "Rainbow" Lemieux

NEWMARKET - Romeo "Rainbow" Lemieux, 81, of the Sleepy Hollow Mobile Home Park, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, following a brief illness.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1921, at his family’s home on Spring Street in Newmarket, a son of Canadian immigrant parents, Homer Joseph and Helen (Roy) Lemieux. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School. After graduating from the eighth grade, he went to work in the Newmarket mills to help support his family during the Great Depression.

He was the owner of Rainbow’s Shoe Store on Main Street in Newmarket during the 1950s. After closing his store, he went to work at the Rockingham Shoe Company, retiring in 1984 after 20 years as an automatic heel and shoe laster.

He joined the United States Navy in World War II and served in the Pacific theater as a signalman second class aboard the transport ship USS Riverside. He served from 1942 to 1946. After returning home from the war, he married his World War II pen pal, Theresa, and the couple purchased their duplex home on Nichols Avenue in Newmarket. Meme and Pepe lived on the other side.

He joined the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post 67 in Newmarket in 1946. He became a member of the Polish Club the same year and remained a member of both organizations until his death.

He was a 61-year member of the Lamprey Aerie #1934 Fraternal Order of Eagles, having joined that organization in 1941.

He developed a lifelong passion for bowling as a young pin boy in the old Newmarket bowling alley above Brisson’s Meat Market on Main Street, the site of the current Newmarket post office. He bowled his last game in April of this year at the town’s North Main Street bowling lanes.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Theresa (Roy) Lemieux of Newmarket; two sons, Roy Lemieux of Newmarket and Ron Lemieux and his wife, Cindy, of Newmarket; a daughter, Robin Sharples and her husband, Shaun, of Newmarket; three granddaughters, Jami and Jessi Sharples of Newmarket and Andrea Lemieux of Raymond; two brothers, Paul Lemieux of Dover and Raymond Lemieux of Florida; four sisters, Jeannette Stokel of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; Mrs. Richard (Leona) Butler of Newmarket; Mrs. Albert (Doris) Houle of Pasadena, Calif.; and Pauline Schanda of Newmarket; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

LEMIEUX - Romeo "Rainbow" Lemieux, 81, of Newmarket, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion services will be at 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday from St. Mary’s Church, Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket. Stanley M. Pridham

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Stanley M. Pridham died Nov. 24, 2002.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on March 1, 1932, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in October 1949, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific. In January 1950, he married Gloria Sawyer of Portland, Maine. He retired from the Coast Guard in May 1974 after 24 years of service. He served as chief of police in his hometown of New Castle, N.H., from 1975 until 1980. He belonged to numerous organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Sojourners, Coast Guard Warrant Officers and Chief Warrant Officers Association, and The Portland Cuttermans Association. He had traveled the USA since 1985, enjoying bluegrass festivals throughout the country.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; children Chrisina, Jon, Carol Anne and Timothy; and several grandchildren and great-grand children.

He will be loved and greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Peter P. Giera

BOW - Peter Paul Giera, 47, died Nov. 28, 2002, at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry.

He was born June 10, 1955, in Beverly, Mass., the son of Stephen Giera and Joan (McGeoghan) Emerson. He was a graduate of Coe Brown High School, Class of 1974. He played high school baseball and was a member of the 1974 state champion team.

He formerly owned and operated his own business called Broad Cove Builders based in Hopkinton. He was also employed for many years as a master carpenter at the local union in Portsmouth. He greatly enjoyed ice hockey, a game that both of his sons play, and he also had a love of animals.

In addition to his mother of Hernando, Fla., he is survived by his wife of 11 years, Julie Giera of Bow; two sons, Ryan and Kevin Giera of Bow; his daughter, Megan Giera of Bow; one brother, Theodore Giera of Hernando; two sisters, Pamela Hall of Sandown and Patricia Giera of Hernando; five nieces and nephews, Holly and Michael Hall of Sandown, Patricia Giera, Wesley Dunn, and Stephanie Giera of Hernando.

GIERA - Peter Paul Giera, 47, of Bow, died Nov. 28, 2002, in Derry. Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Prospect Cemetery in Epping.

Eva M. DesBarbieux

BRENTWOOD - Eva M. DesBarbieux, 82, of North Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Lawrence, Mass., daughter of the late Wilfred and Albertine (Beauchesne) St. Pierre. Mrs. DesBarbieux was raised in Lawrence and attended Lawrence High School. She lived for many years in Salem, Mass., moving to Exeter in 1980 and to Brentwood in 1998.

She worked for Western Electric in North Andover, Mass. She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church, Exeter, and was involved in the Christmas fair and the cleaning of the church. She enjoyed making bisque dolls.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. DesBarbieux, in 1983.

Family members include one son, Kenneth G. DesBarbieux of New Boston,; one daughter, Linda A. Johnston and her husband, Kevin B., of Brentwood; three grandchildren, Laura Smith of East Kingston, Michael Johnston of Saco, Maine, and Ruth-Ann Cooper of Sandown; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Cooper of Saco; one brother, Leo St. Pierre of Windham; and several nieces and nephews.

DESBARBIEUX - Eva M. DesBarbieux, 82, of North Road, Brentwood, died Nov. 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today, at St. Michael’s Church, Front Street, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301-4059.
