Priscilla Ann (Cromwell) Walker

DOVER - Priscilla Ann (Cromwell) Walker, 80, died Dec. 6, 2002, at the Langdon Place of Dover. She was born on May 8, 1922, in Chelsea, Mass., was raised in Melrose, Mass., and spent her high school years playing basketball and writing poetry in Raymond. She was the daughter of George and Grace (Kimball) Cromwell.

She gave 32 years of her life to the Portsmouth School Department, mostly working in the elementary schools, where she loved being the matriarch for every child in that school. She spent the latter part of her School Department life in the superintendent's office, where she loved the people she worked with but missed the children. She had a spirit, love, empathy, and a smile for everyone she ever met. She gave her time and energy in two decades of volunteer work with the March of Dimes, the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts, and attended the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

She will be missed by her three children, Susan E. Bilodeau of Portsmouth, Wayne G. Walker of Medfield, Mass., and David N. Walker of Chardon, Ohio; eight grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Cromwell Harney; and many nieces, nephews and friends from her two favorite towns, Portsmouth and Wolfeboro.

WALKER - Priscilla Ann (Cromwell) Walker, 80, of Dover, died Dec. 6, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wadleigh House, 10 Summer St., Dover, NH 03820.

Thomas William "T.W." Smith III

ORIENTAL, N.C. - Thomas William "T.W." Smith III, 26, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

He was a member of Oriental First Baptist Church and loved videos and music as hobbies.

He was predeceased by his father, Thomas W. Smith Jr.

His is survived by his mother, Joanne Straw Smith, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H.; half-sister Katelyn Grace Smith-Malone; paternal grandparents, Thomas W. Sr. and Anne Smith of Oriental; maternal grandmother, Joyce Straw of Dover, N.H.; aunt and uncle, Norma and Hubert Smith and their son, Jimmy of Oriental; special family friend Danny Malone; aunts, uncles and families all formerly of New Hampshire and Maine, Chucky Straw, Michael Straw, Larry Straw, Mimi Roberts and Marylyn Flores.

SMITH - Thomas William "T.W." Smith III, 26, of Oriental, N.C, died Dec. 8, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Oriental Cemetery with Rev. Murray Ethridge officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 205 Neuse Street, Oriental. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oriental First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 313, Oriental, NC 28571.

Harold Edwin Lomas

NEW CASTLE - Harold Edwin Lomas, 83, died Dec. 2, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born on May 23, 1919, in Portland, Maine, he was the son of Oscar and Nellie (Lomas) Eaton. His adoptive parents were Fred and Eliza Jane (Wood) Lomas. He attended Kittery, Maine, schools and graduated from R.W. Traip Academy in 1937.

He was employed by the Bullard Machine Tool Company of Bridgeport, Conn., until his enlistment and service with the 504th Bomb Group during World War II. After the war he worked for, and retired from, Connecticut Light and Power Co. in Greenwich, Conn., as a sales manager, moving to New Castle in 1977.

While retired, he was a member of the New Castle Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer at Strawbery Banke and at the New Castle Church Guild. He was an active member of the Portsmouth Country Club.

In addition to his wife of 32 years, Anita (Wenger) Lomas, he is survived by his sons, Robert and his wife, Hope, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Thomas and his wife, Betsy, of Old Lyme, Conn., and William and his wife, Gwen, of Weston, Conn.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Fred Eaton of Burlington, Vt.; a sister, Phyllis Daehler of Stanwood, Iowa; as well as nephews and nieces.

LOMAS - Harold Edwin Lomas, 83, of New Castle, died Dec. 2, 2002. There will be a private family service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2002, at the New Castle Congregational Church. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or other cancer research/treatment organization. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Josephine S. "Josie" Juliano

MEDFORD, Mass. - Josephine S. "Josie" Juliano, 86, former of Everett and Chelsea, Mass., died Dec. 7, 2002, at the Glenridge Nursing Home in Medford, after a progressive illness.

Born in Chelsea, Josie spent most of her life in Everett.

For 18 years she was a processor and clerk for the Federal Reserve Bank.

She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Juliano, and brother, Stanley Brent.

She is survived by her daughters, Joanna Cotter of Rye, N.H., and Janice Sesser of Malden, Mass; sister, Jadzia Correlle of Sandown, N.H.; brother, William Bizanowicz of N.H.; grandchildren, Deirdre, Stacey, Robyn, Richard II, Lesley and Alyson; great-grandmother of Britany, Dianne, Christian, Heather, Aidan, Ryan, Johnny and Erin.

JULIANO - Josephine S. "Josie" Juliano, 86, formerly of Everett and Chelsea, Mass., died in Medford, Mass., Dec. 7, 2002. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Smith Funeral Home, 125 Washington Avenue, Chelsea, Mass. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Emphysema Fund of Greater Boston, 5 Mountain Road, Burlington, MA 01803.

Gordon K. Hill

STRAFFORD - Gordon K. Hill, 92, of Rollercoaster Road, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Langdon Place of Exeter following a period of failing health.

Born July 2, 1910, in Strafford, he was the son of the late Herman and Lucy E. (Straham) Hill. He attended Strafford Elementary School and Austin Cate Academy and graduated from Lawrence Academy. He went on to attend the University of New Hampshire.

He worked for General Electric as a jet engine technical representative and retired at the age of 62.

He had served as a past commander of the Portsmouth Power Squadron and was a Home Guard captain in Lynnfield, Mass. He was a 71-year member of the Morrison Lodge #90 of Northwood. He was a 32nd degree Mason in Taiwan, of the Southern District. His memberships included the Bektash Shrine, Portsmouth Shrine Club and Simadi Shrine. He was an honorary member of the Bektash Highlanders, a bagpipers club, and the Strafford Historical Society.

The widow of Ruth E. (Caverly) Hill and Dianna G. (Walbaum) Hill, he is survived by his son, Gordon R. Hill and his wife, Nancy, of Strafford; daughter Barbara Eldridge of Rochester; granddaughter Bonnie and her husband, Bruce Levine, of Ohio; great-grandson Aaron Hatfield of California; and great-granddaughter Nina Lichtenberg, M.D.

He was predeceased by a grandson, William Lichtenberg.

HILL - Gordon K. Hill, 92, of Strafford, died Nov. 30, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m. Flowers are acceptable or, if desired, memorials may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820; or to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Holli Hart

DURHAM - Holli Hart, 48, of Durham Point Road, died Dec. 5, 2002, in Greenland, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Born Feb. 17, 1954, in Anchorage, Alaska, the daughter of Bernard and Nancy (Wooster) DesRoches, she lived in Hawaii for 25 years before moving to Durham 12 years ago.

Ms. Hart received a bachelor of arts degree in communications from the University of New Hampshire. She was a member of the Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies.

For the last 10 years she was the business manager of Chaseco Construction in Durham.

She was very involved in Durham civic affairs and assisted in the formation of Durham Cable Access Television (DCAT).

A breast cancer survivor, her strength of character and concern for those around her motivated her in the service of others, on a community and personal level.

Holli had a deep interest in the arts and creatively combined old and new to produce a style that reflected her unique personality.

She had a love of animals domestic and wild alike, and a special devotion to her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, Jerry Chase Jr., of Durham, she is survived by one daughter, Jennifer L. Koos of Durham; two brothers, Charles DesRoches of Salinas, Calif., and William DesRoches of Watsonville, Calif.; one sister, Amy DesRoches of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two stepsons, Malcolm Chase III and Jeremiah Chase II of Yarmouth, Maine; mother-in-law, Charlotte Chase of Durham, and several nieces and nephews.

HART - Holli Hart, 48, of Durham Point Road, Durham, N.H., died Dec. 5, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the Durham Community Church, Main Street, Durham. Charles "Chuck" W. Esterline

GREENLAND - Charles "Chuck" W. Esterline, 68, husband of Arlene (Ivon) Esterline, of 63 Tuttle Lane, died peacefully at his home with his family at his side, on Dec. 8, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Carmel, Ind., he was born on June 21, 1934, a son of the late David and Blanche Esterline.

He graduated form Carmel High School in 1952 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After four years of service he was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant and re-enlisted in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1972.

Upon his retirement, he continued to work for the government for an additional 10 years.

Most recently he had been employed as a groundskeeper for the Abenaqui Country Club. He will be greatly missed.

Besides his wife, Arlene, survivors include two stepsons, Richard Mullikin and Donald Mullikin; three stepdaughters, Corinne Muder, Arlene Mullikin, and Kim Mulliken; several grandchildren; and a sister, Charlotte Rives.

He was predeceased by three sisters and a brother.

ESTERLINE - Charles "Chuck" W. Esterline, 68, of 63 Tuttle Lane, Greenland, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Derry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Roland W. Desjardins

PORTSMOUTH - Roland W. Desjardins, 74, formerly of Manchester, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, where he been a resident for the past year.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., on Nov. 24, 1928, a son of the late Albert and Philomena (Plourde) Desjardins.

He attended Sacred Heart School in Lawrence and was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He resided in Lawrence, Mass., for most of his life and was employed in the shipping department for the former Converse Company in Andover, Mass., for many years.

He moved to Manchester in 1996 and to Portsmouth last year.

Family members include one son, Wayne Grady and his wife, Susan, of Plaistow; eight siblings, Theresa A. McGrath of Dover, Norman Desjardins of Mooresville, N.C., Claire McGuire of Lawrence, Mass., Rita Cunningham and Louise Pelletier, both of North Andover, Mass., Margaret Laplume of Raymond, Albert Desjardins of Methuen, Mass., and Marierose Miller of Nashua; one grandchild, Erin Grady of Plaistow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Robert Desjardins; and a sister, Lorraine Lemay; predeceased him.

DESJARDINS - Roland W. Desjardins, 74, of Portsmouth, formerly of Manchester, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lawrence, Mass. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. KathyLynn Grado

HAMPTON FALLS - KathyLynn Grado, 48, died unexpectedly in her sleep Dec. 6, 2002.

She was born in Bristol, Tenn., on Feb. 24, 1954, the daughter of John and Kathryn Grado.

She attended Applewild School in Fitchburg, Mass. After receiving her GED she studied at the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mass. She was an admired photographer and painter.

She loved gardening, sailing, and was an enthusiastic and generous supporter of animal rights causes and humane shelters.

Competitive by nature, she competed in numerous recreational ski races including Nastar, and the Mitsubishi Motors National ski series in which she earned top honors in her class. She, at one time, qualified for the national finals in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, placing fourth in the two-day giant slalom competition. A certified deep-water diver, she especially appreciated the waters off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

She is survived by one daughter, Summer Rebecca Mahoney of Los Angeles, Calif.; her father, John Grado of Marco Island, Fla.; her mother, Kathryn Davis Grado of Lunenburg, Mass.; three sisters, Leighann Grado Bates of Shrewsburg, Mass., Kristina Grado of Cambridge, Mass., and Pamela Grado Lazecki of Daytona Shores, Fla.; and her maternal grandmother, Mabel Biddle Davis of Crumpton, Md.; her longtime companion, Donald C. Roy and his son, Kyle, of Hampton Falls; two aunts; two uncles; and five cousins.

GRADO - KathyLynn Grado, 48, of Hampton Falls, N.H., died Dec. 6, 2002, at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Rye Congregational Church, Washington Road, Rye, N.H. Interment will be held privately in Crumpton, Md., and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dogs for Disabled Americans, NEADS National Office, P.O. Carole Marie Hardy

PORTSMOUTH - Carole Marie Hardy, 59, of 33 Blue Heron Drive, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Somerville, Mass., July 19, 1943, she was the daughter of Marie (Lemos) Concannon and the late Francis Joseph Concannon and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 33 years.

Primarily a homemaker, she was active with the Clamshell Alliance and the Save Our Homes Organization. She also enjoyed playing softball.

In addition to her mother of Somerville, she is survived by five children, Nancy Concannon Phillips of Wildwood, N.J., Donna LeClair of Portsmouth, William Francis Concannon and Michael Smolak of North Andover, Mass., Sheila Marie Hardy and Daniel Regan Hoyne of Portsmouth, and Maureen Ann Varney and husband Rodney of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Francis Joseph Phillips, Kelly Jean Phillips, Lauren Jean Phillips, Kelsie Marie Hoyne, Amber Nicole LeClair, Kayleen Marie Varney and Katelyn Regan Hoyne; a brother, Bucky Concannon and wife Cookie, of Revere, Mass.; a sister, Maureen O’Reilly and husband John of Penobscot, Maine, and several nieces nephews, and many friends.

HARDY - Carole Marie Hardy, 59, of 33 Blue Heron Drive, Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Friday at 4 p.m. Friends may visit with the family on Friday at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
