Jennifer C. Bailey

BARRINGTON - Jennifer C. Bailey, 48, died at her home on Dec. 6, 2002, following a lengthy illness.

She was born on July 25, 1954, in Beverly, Mass., the daughter of Richmond A. Bailey of Converse, Texas, and Doris "Claire" (Cooper) Frysalis of Stratham.

She received a master’s degree in literature in 2001 from the University of New Hampshire.

Her interests included literature, art and storytelling. She was a teacher at Barrington Elementary School and at Somersworth High School.

Family members include her husband, Thomas P. Moody; her parents; one son, Joshua Carlson of Durham; two brothers, Jonathan Bailey of Nottingham, and Gordon Bailey of Stratham; one niece; and one nephew.

BAILEY - Jennifer C. Bailey, 48, of Barrington, died on Dec. 6, 2002. A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Community House near her home, off Scruton Pond Road in Barrington. Lena J. Goodwin

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Lena J. Goodwin, who died Dec. 5, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H., were held on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. In attendance were her loving family, neighbors, representatives from Portsmouth Hospital, Shirley Alden representing "St. John’s Special Ladies," former Portmouth Mayor Eileen Foley and other class members of Portsmouth High School Class of 1936, representatives of the Rivermouth Chapter Order of Eastern Star as well as many friends. The service was officiated by the Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor of the North Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Shippee began the service with greetings and an opening prayer, followed by readings from Psalm 23 and John 14. The service continued with kind words of remembrance from longtime friends Beverly Wurm and Peg Cain and niece Carla Goodwin. The Rev. Shippee offered a reading from Acts 9 and 1st Corinthians as well as a poem, "To Those I Love," specially chosen for her service by Mrs. Goodwin before her death. Musical selections were offered by organist Alfred "Butch" Lapointe. The service continued at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, where the Rev. Shippee offered words of committal; acting as pallbearers were her grandson Bradford S. Goodwin III, nephews Norman Cain and Judson Goodwin as well as Steve Robinson and Bill Robinson, and her dear friend and neighbor William Bartley. Following the services, all were invited to a time of refreshment and sharing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson of Kittery. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Ernest H. Fogg

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Funeral services for Ernest H. Fogg, 49, of 1046 Hampshire Court, and formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Wednesday. Rev. Donald Gum, pastor, of the Calvary Baptist Church, in Portsmouth, officiated. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, N.H., with committal services by Rev. Gum. Bearers were Donald Fogg, Christopher Fogg, Al Balcomb, and Thomas Daubney.

Elizabeth Singer

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth Singer, 82, of Portsmouth, NH, died Dec. 3, 2002. At the time of her death she resided with her son, Ronald Simpson in Los Angeles, Calif. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

John E. Thompson, Jr.

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for John E. Thompson, Jr., 79, of Hampton Falls, who died Dec. 6, 2002, was held Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted in the Assembly of God, Church, Exeter. The Rev. Ernest E. Karjala, pastor, officiated. Jean Goss was pianist and Doug Gregan led the congregation in singing. Mr. Thompson’s children, Patricia Trudel, Pamela Coco and Reed Thompson offered remembrances and reflections. Burial was in the Oak Lawn Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Rev. Karjala. Taps was sounded and the US flag, which draped the casket, was folded and presented to Mr. Thompson’s widow, Florence (Bell) Thompson by a detachment of Marine personnel.

Stuart E. Libby

YORK, Maine - Stuart E. Libby, 50, of York, died Wednesday Dec. 11, 2002, at York Hospital, following a period of failing health.

Born on Sept. 30, 1952, in Dexter, he was the son of Lemond and Gertrude (Holbrook) Stuart. He attended York schools, graduating from York High School.

From the early age of 11 his love of the ocean was evident. He started fishing with his family and later became a commercial fisherman, and was the youngest fishing boat captain at the time to captain a commercial vessel. Over the years he captained a number of vessels, most recently he was the captain of the Finest Kind I., for over six years.

He was a member of the York Elks club and a member of the sons of the American Legion, Frank E. Booma Post 6 of Portsmouth, N.H. He was an avid pool player. He enjoyed playing pool for recreation and competing in pool tournaments. His love of the out of doors also allowed him to enjoy time spent fresh water fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his daughters, Meeghan and her husband, Andrew Baumler, and their son, Gavin of Kennebunk, Maine, Ashley Harvey and her husband, Mike Harvey and their daughter, Katelyn Ferris of York; his sons, Matthew Libby of Sanford, and Brandon Libby of York. He is also survived by his former wife, Debra Santiago.

LIBBY - Stuart E. Libby, 50, of York Maine, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in York, Maine, following a period of failing health. A funeral will be held on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at 6 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery Maine 03904. Friends may visit with Stuart’s family from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his memory to the "Stuart Libby Memorial fund" c/o Meeghan Baumler, 34 Hillcrest Dr., Kennebunk, ME 04043. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Braden (Brady) James Verra

STRAFFORD - Braden (Brady) James Verra, 17, of Parker Mountain Road, died Dec. 11, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 18, 1985, in Portsmouth, he was the son of James and Cheryl (Fogarty) Verra.

He attended Strafford Elementary and Middle School and he was presently a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover.

He played lacrosse and varsity football at St. Thomas Aquinas. His hobbies included mountain biking, fishing, writing and playing the piano.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Guy Robert Verra of Strafford; one grandmother, Celia Verra of Flushing, N.Y.; three aunts, Diane Clemons of Barrington, Mary Ann Miller of Northvale, N.J., and Dalia Fogarty of Epping; many great-aunts; great-uncles; and cousins.

VERRA - Braden (Brady) James Verra, 17, of Parker Mountain Road, Strafford, N.H., died Dec. 11, 2002. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 65 Central Avenue, Dover, N.H. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Avenue, Dover, N.H. Marianna "Mayna" Scammon Wilder

RYE - Marianna "Mayna" Scammon Wilder, 81, of 105 Wallis Road, passed away peacefully at her residence early Thursday morning, Dec. 12, 2002.

She was born in Exeter on May 21, 1921, daughter of the late John J. and Harriet G. (Higgins) Scammon. She attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1939. She furthered her education at Green Mountain College in Vermont.

In recent years she could be found hostessing at BG’s Boat House Restaurant in Portsmouth. Known to many, she enjoyed countless hours associating with the locals who frequented the restaurant.

A homemaker and loving devoted mother, she involved herself extensively in the lives of her children and nieces and nephews. Loved by all who knew her, she will surely be remembered for the many acts of kindness shown to those in need. Mayna volunteered tirelessly, often driving the senior citizen buses, transporting numerous cancer patients to medical appointments throughout the area, and often into Boston, as she expressed a genuine desire to help others.

A member of the Third Friday Club, the Rye over 55 Club, she enjoyed playing bridge and regularly played with her close friends around the Seacoast.

Mayna is survived by two sons, John Scammon Wilder and his wife, June, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Robert Campbell Wilder and his wife, Tamara of Rye; a daughter, Nancy Harriet Wilder and her husband, Jerome Frazel of Chicago, Ill.; her brother, G. Richard Scammon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren, William, Sara, and Matthew Wilder and Paul and Michael Frazel; several nieces; nephews; grandnieces; and grandnephews.

WILDER - Marianna "Mayna" Scammon Wilder, 81, of 105 Wallis Road, Rye, died Dec. 12, 2002. A celebration of her life will be held at the home of her son Robert, at 105 Wallis Road in Rye, this afternoon and into the evening from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to visit and continue to share their memories with her family. Her burial will be held privately on Cuttyhunk Island, Mass., at a later date. In her memory, as you continue to remember "Mayna," kindly make donations to the charity of your choice. Virginia M. "Jinny" Hegvig

YORK BEACH, Maine - Virginia M. "Jinny" Hegvig, 79, of Spruce Street died Wednesday, Dec. 11, at her home, supported by her long-time friend Barbara A. Boschert and her two poodle "kids," Shadow and Sterling.

She was born on May 27, 1923, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of William A. and Ruth E. (Parker) Hegvig and was a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Worcester.

She began her career at Davis Press, where she worked from 1941 to 1944. In 1944, Jinny enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving until 1948 at the submarine base in New London, Conn. She later attended Clark University and received her B.S. degree in 1952 and a master of education degree in 1953. She also completed further studies at Assumption College, Harvard University, Worcester State College, Boston University and Anna Maria College.

Miss Hegvig was a middle school English teacher at Holden Junior High School and Mt. View Middle School for 34 years, retiring in June 1988.

She was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Worcester since 1948. She had served the church as a lay eucharistic minister, lay reader and church school teacher. She had served four terms on the Church Vestry and was chairman of the 100th Anniversary of St. Johns Episcopal Church. In 1984 she was awarded the Danker Lundgren Cross.

After moving to York Beach five years ago she became a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church of York Harbor and continued her service to the church as a lay eucharistic minister, lay reader and chalice bearer.

She also volunteered as a member of the Outreach Community, Worship Community and was co-chairperson of the Food Pantry Ministry.

In June 2000 Jinny completed theological education by extension, education for ministry (EFM) as administered by the School of Theology at University of the South.

Miss Hegvig was a member of the National Education Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, National Council of Teachers of English, the Holden Education Association and the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association. Jinny had also served as past commander of the Worcester’s All Women’s Post #419 and was a member of the American Legion Post #56 of York Beach.

She enjoyed collecting owls and found peace and solitude in walking the beach and in her garden, and she enjoyed ironing. Jinny had also played the organ and taught lessons for many years.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Jacqueline Hegvig Frye who died in February 1984 and by Phyllis Hegvig Zona, who died in March 2002.

Survivors include her sister, Gretchen (Hegvig) Jolicoeur of Shrewsbury, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.

HEGVIG – Virginia M. "Jinny" Hegvig, of Spruce St., York Beach, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died, Dec. 11 in York Beach. Funeral at 2 p.m., Sunday in St. George’s Episcopal Church, York St., York Harbor, Maine. Visiting hours, Saturday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St. George’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 364, York Harbor, ME 03911.

John Lenna Swenson

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. - John Lenna Swenson of Newton Centre, died at his home on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, two hours before his 80th birthday.

Born in Somerville, Mass., he was the only son of the late Herbert Leroy Swenson and Sadie Lenna Swenson. He attended St. John’s High School and was active in the Catholic Youth Organization. He was a Newton resident for more than 40 years. He was married at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Exeter, N.H., in 1956, to Norma Meras Swenson, a native of Exeter.

Mr. Swenson resigned from the Massachusetts State Guard in Nov. 1942, to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After training, he flew with the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force out of England in B-17s, the "Flying Fortresses." Shot down over France on his fifth mission, he was concealed by the Free French underground who eventually helped him to escape over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain and safety. During that escape, he exhibited "...outstanding courage and perseverance..." in helping wounded comrades at considerable risk to himself. He later received the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism and The Purple Heart for being wounded in action.

After the war, Mr. Swenson spent two years in an Honor Guard returning WWII war dead from foreign soil to their families, and an additional tour of duty returning stranded military aircraft to the U.S. In 1950, while attending Boston University, he responded to the call to active duty in the Korean Conflict, spending two years there. He received a direct commission as a lieutenant during that tour of duty. Subsequently, he also responded to the call during the Cuba Missile Crisis, and was on active duty for one year at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, where he was a reserve officer. In the late 70’s, then Captain Swenson was a military liaison to the Tactical Patrol Force of the Boston Police Department. In all, John Swenson spent 30 years in active service with the U.S. Air Force, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel and receiving many additional Air Force medals, citations and commendations.

During later periods of civilian life, Mr. Swenson also worked for the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Somerville and finally retired as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Boston. He received his B.S. from Northeastern University in Boston and his M.A. from Anna Maria College. He was a life member of the 100th Bomb Group Association, the Escape and Evasion Society, and the Retired Officers Association.

In addition to his wife, Norma Meras Swenson, he is survived by his daughter, Sarah Lucille Swenson of Long Beach, Calif., and many close cousins in New Hampshire.

A funeral mass was celebrated on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at St. Anthony’s Church in Somerville. Memorial donations in Mr. Swenson’s name may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Ella Greenier

NICEVILLE, Fla. - Ella Greenier, 89, of Niceville, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away on Dec. 4, 2002.

Ella was born in Peel, New Brunswick, Canada, on May 7, 1913, daughter of the late Lettie and Willie Golding. For the past five years, Ella resided in Niceville, with her daughter Marge and son-in-law Dick Evans.

Ella was an avid seamstress. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing bingo.

Ella was predeceased by her husband, Edward Greenier, and three children, Franklin Greenier, Richard "Dick" Greenier, and Freda Murphy.

She is survived by three sisters, Bessie "Pearl" Greenier, Sadie Foster, and Helen Foster; four children, Joseph "Eddy" Greenier, Charlie Greenier, Robert "Red" Greenier, and Marge Evans; many nieces and nephews; 26 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

GREENIER - Ella Greenier, 89, of Niceville, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Dec. 4, 2002. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2002, at the New Hope Baptist Church, 263 Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth. Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, Pastor, will officiate.

Leo Mark Prenaveau

DANVILLE - Leo Mark Prenaveau, 55, of Danville, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, after a brave and vigilant fight with multiple myeloma.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., on April 6, 1947.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kathy Lynn (Alberts) Prenaveau; his daughter, Lisa Bentley (Prenaveau) Andrzejewski of Seymour, Conn.; his son, Christopher Justin Prenaveau of Stoughton, Mass.; his mother, Gertrude Grace (Gray) Prenaveau of Kingston; two brothers, Bertin Charles Prenaveau of Wolfeboro, and James Gray Prenaveau of Kingston; and two grandchildren, Tristan Keith Andrzejewski and Taylor Grace Andrzejewski.

Leo was a graduate of Sanborn Regional High School in 1965, and a 1969 graduate of St. Anselm’s College. It was at Sanborn that Leo fell in love with his wife, Kathy, and earned a reputation as an outstanding trumpet player and band conductor. Leo was a volunteer fireman for the towns of Kingston and Newton, for 25 years and held the positions of captain and deputy chief. He also served as a special deputy for the Rockingham Country Sheriff’s Department. Leo was a member of the board of directors for the Plaistow Co-operative Bank in Plaistow, from 1984 to 1995.

Leo, together with his brother, James, owned and operated Royal Woodcraft in Kingston. Leo was president of the family furniture store founded by his mother and father in 1962. Leo loved golf, the Caribbean and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for his kindness, caring, humor and undying devotion to his wife, Kathy.

PRENAVEAU - Leo Mark Prenaveau, 55, of Danville, N.H., died Dec. 11, 2002. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at St. Michael’s Church, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Leo M. Prenaveau may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 3 Forest St., New Canaan, Conn., 06840. The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H., is in charge of arrangements.

Charles "Chuck" W. Esterline

GREENLAND - Funeral services for Charles "Chuck" W. Esterline, 68, of 63 Tuttle Lane, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2002. The Rev. Angelo Pappas, presbyter of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, officiated. The eulogy was given by Mr. Esterline’s grandson, Justin Finn. Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Derry, with committal services by Rev. Pappas.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded and was then presented to Mr. Esterline’s widow, Mrs. Arlene (Ivon) Esterline, by her son, Sgt. Richard Mullikin, USMC.

Bearers were Joshua Mullikin, Kyle Lentz, Kelvin Lentz, Justin Finn, Joey Muder and Bob James.

Priscilla Ann Walker

DOVER - Funeral services for Priscilla Ann (Cromwell) Walker, 80, of Dover were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Friday.

Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, of the Middle Street Baptist Church, officiated. Words of reflection were given by Wayne Walker, Patrick Carignan, and Porter Schoff. In attendance were members of the Middle Street Baptist Church; former associates from the Portsmouth school system; and representatives from Sunbridge Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Burial was in the Congregational Cemetery, Stratham, with committal services by Rev. Martindale. Bearers were Wayne Walker, David Walker, Michael Walker, Scott Walker, Patrick Carignan, and Gared Dotsie.
