Rachel M. Osgood, 3-year-old daughter of Timothy and Gretchen Krim Osgood of Wilton Warren Rd. died unexpectedly Saturday, September 29, 2001 at her home. Rachel was born in Bridgton on June 15, 1998. She loved her two brothers Jacob and Joshua, and her Barbie Dolls. She also enjoyed her dance class, and getting into her mother's make-up. Her family includes her parents and two brothers of Fryeburg, parental grandmother Marguerite Osgood of Fryeburg, maternal grandfather William R. Krim of Conway, maternal grandmother Lynn Krim of Fryeburg, maternal great grandfather William A. Krim of Naples, Florida, maternal great grandparents Andy and Mae Reisert of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street in Fryeburg. A Mass of the Angles will be celebrated 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Route 5 Fryeburg. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 117, Fryeburg, ME 04037.

Charles H. Watts II of Freedom, New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly of a heart attack yesterday at his farm in New Hampshire. He was the beloved husband of Patricia McQuillen Watts.
Born in 1926 in Bronxville, New York, Mr. Watts was the only child of Charles H. and Mabel L. Watts. He married Patricia Dorothy McQuillen, also of Bronxville, in 1951. After completing his Ph.D. in American Literature at Brown University in 1953, he became an Assistant Professor of English at Brown and was later named Dean of the College. In 1963, at the age of 37, he was named President of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he served for twelve years, leading the school through an important period of change and growth. Following his time at Bucknell, Mr. Watts returned to Brown University to help launch a major capital campaign. He then joined Beneficial Financial Corporation (later acquired by Household Finance) in the position of General Director. Mr. Watts, whose father, Charles H. Watts, was one of Beneficial's original founders, was also a member of the Beneficial Board from 1959 until 1998. He received honorary degrees from Franklin College (D. Lit., 1965), Dickenson School of Law (L.L.D., 1968), Alderson Broaddus College (H.H.D., 1969), Brown University (L.L.D., 1975), and Bucknell University (L.H.D., 1979).
Throughout his career, Mr. Watts served on numerous academic, corporate and civic boards. He was a member of the board of the Riverdale School (1959-1974), Bucknell University (1964-1976), the Peddie School (1971-1985), and St. John's College (1976-present). He was also an active board member of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to the library, he was deeply committed to Trinity Church, in Boston, and the Society for the Preservation of New Hampshire Forests in Concord, New Hampshire.
Mr. Watts was an avid conservationist throughout his life and worked with both the Audubon and New Hampshire Forest societies to preserve the natural environment in New Hampshire. Mr. Watts and his wife opened High Meadow Farms, in Freedom, New Hampshire, in the mid-fifties with the late Percy Taylor, also of Freedom. The farm, which operated commercially for nearly forty years, sold eggs, apples, wood and hay.
Mr. Watts is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their three children, Katharine L. Watts and her son Cooper; Caroline W. Collins and her husband Peter and their children Dylan and Abigail; Charles H. Watts III and his wife Holly and their children Samuel, Isabel, and Isaac.
Services will be held at Trinity Church, in Boston, on Wednesday, October 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, offerings will be gratefully accepted by Trinity Church (Copley Square, Boston, MA 02116) or by the John Carter Brown Library (Brown University, Providence, RI 02906).
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of local arrangements.

WEST OSSIPEE - Stephen G. Swansburg, of West Ossipee, passed away Sept. 26, 2001, in Center Ossipee at the age of 30.
He was born Nov. 9, 1970, in Boston, Mass., and had lived in Danvers and Winthrop, Mass., before moving to Ossipee six years ago. He was a graduate of Danvers HIgh School, in Danvers, Mass., and was a self-employed contractor in the Ossipee area. He was also a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Sacha (Eldridge) Swansburg, of West Ossipee; a son, Nicholas Swansburg, of West Ossipee; three step children, Mariah Palmer, Ariel Palmer and Gregory Palmer, all of West Ossipee; his parents, George F. and Nancy (Brugman) Swansburg, of Center Ossipee; his paternal grandfather, Donald E. Swansburg, of Winthrop, Mass.; a brother, Christopher R. Swansburg, of Barrington; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to your local American Red Chapter or to the charity of your choice.

BROWNFIELD, Maine - Luann Hutchings, 58, of Burnt Meadow Road in Brownfield, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the Bridgton Hospital.
She was born in Burlington, Iowa. She grew up and was educated in California, the daughter of Chester and Nettie Johnston Still. Luann lived in Brockton, Mass., for many years and worked for Copeland Toyota in the parts department for 13 years. She lived in Brownfield the past 10 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Leach. She is survived by two sons, Keith Hutchings, of Madison, NH, and Kevin Hutchings, of West Bridgewater, Mass.; three daughters, Kimberly Burnham and Kelly Canon, both of Brownfield, and Julie Thomas, of Madison; one sister, Darlene Conklin, of Arkansas; and 16 grandchildren.
A visiting hour will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg. Funeral services will be private and t the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Brockton, Mass.

KITTERY POINT, Maine -Charles Allan Ludgate Sr., 64, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at his home in Kittery Point, where he had resided since 1997.
He was born in Bartlett, the son of Henry and Hulda (Friberg) Ludgate. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1960, he served in the Navy Air Corps as an anti-submarine warfare tactical coordinator, at the rank of lieutenant. Beginning in 1964, he was a salesman for various New England companies, working from 1991 to the present at Clarke Corp., a distributor of quality kitchen appliances and cabinets based in Hopkinton, Mass.
Mr. Ludgate resident in Central Maine from 1964 to 1997, first in Fairfield and then in Belgrade. While there he was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Waterville, serving in several capacities, including chairman of the board of deacons. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York.
Surviving is his wife of 40 years, Charline (King) Ludgate, of Kittery Point; one daughter, Kristen Ludgate, of St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Charles Allan Ludgate Jr., of New York City; three grandchildren, Chloe and Noah Ludgate Booth and Lucas Liranzo Ludgate; five sisters, Jean Garland of Bartlett, Jeanette Kimbrough, of Columbia, S.C., Louise Merrill, of Hampton Falls, NH, Marie Blackburn, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Audrey Helland, of Aalborg, Demark; and one brother, John Ludgate, of Northboro, Mass.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Congregational Church of York in York, Maine. Burial will be private in First Parish Cemetery in York. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home in York.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Senior High Youth Mission Trip Fund, payable to the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York Street, York, ME 03909.

FREEDOM - Elizabeth A. Roberts, 63, of Freedom, died Sept. 24, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.
Born in Salem, Mass., the daughter of Alan and Beatrice (Hall) Brown, she lived in Salem all of her life prior to moving to Freedom in 1978.
Mrs. Roberts graduated from Salem (Mass.) High School in 1955.
She worked at the former Cinnamon Tree Restaurant in Conway from 1978-79. For the past 22 years, she worked at Dorothy Timberlake Candies in Eaton Center as a candy processor.
The family includes her husband of nearly 45 years, Donald G. Roberts, of Freedom; two daughters, Teresa A. Greuling and her husband Brad of Sanbornville, and Donna M. Roberts and her partner Steve McNeill of Beverly, Mass.; two sons, Timothy A. Roberts and his wife Jennifer, of Conway, and Richard P. Roberts and his wife Melissa, also of Conway; a brother, Richard Brown, of Florida; two sisters, Dorothy Kehoe, of Valrico, Fla., and Louise Hanscom, of Salem, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus officiating. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

STOW, Maine - Merle F. Watson, 82, of Route 113B in Stow, Maine, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at the Bridgton Hospital.
He was born in North Fryeburg, the son of Harold and Agnes Davis Watson, and was educated in Fryeburg schools.
Merle was a truck driver and drove for Farnsworth Co., many years for C.N. Brown Co., Bennett's Milk Truck and later drove a school bus. Merle's family says he was a jack of all trades and that he could fix or build anything. He enjoyed antique cars and trucks, and especially his woodworking and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruby Bryant Watson, of Stow; one son, Daniel M. Watson, of Brownfield; one brother, Herbert Watson, of Norway, Maine; and two grandchildren, Melissa and Christopher Watson. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith.
There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, with the Rev. Richard Male officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Stow, Maine.
Donations in memory of Merle may be made to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, Maine 04037.

Dorothy Page Thurrell, 73, of Conway, previously from Bedford, Mass., died Sept. 20, 2001, at Concord Hospital.
She was born in West Ossipee on July 19, 1928, daughter of William H. and Agnes P. Pascoe. She graduated from Colby Sawyer (Junior) College in New London, NH, as a medical technologist. She pursued this career from Kentucky to New Hampshire to Massachusetts. She had a happy and positive outlook on life, being involved in many organizations.
The family includes her husband, Roger F. Thurrell; her daughter, Linda Thurrell, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren, Caitlin Gillenwater and Rebecca Gillenwater; one son, Marc Thurrell, of West Ossipee; and a brother, Richard Pascoe. She was predeceased by brother Harry Pascoe and a sister, Jeraldine Courtney.
A graveside service, to be announced, will be held next summer in Freedom. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Order of Eastern Star, Calvin Topliff Chapter, c/o Patricia Philbrick, P.O. Box 1, Conway, NH 03818.

Joseph A. "Babe" Pennett, 92, of Williamstown, Mass., died Sept. 19, 2001, at his home following a long illness.
Born in Redstone, the son of Theophile and Cora (Rancourt) Pinette, he had been a resident of the Mount Washington Valley for 88 years before moving to Williamstown to be with his daughter.
Babe, as a boy, became a tool carrier at the granite quarry in Redstone when on summer vacation. He then learned to operate a crane, which led to construction work as a power shovel operator. He built many well-known roads and river-bed projects throughout the state of New Hampshire. He later changed careers, becoming a conductor for the Boston and Maine Railroad, which he did for many years. After his retirement, he became an avid skier, skiing every winter until his 88th birthday.
Babe was truly an "old man of the mountains." His outgoing personality made him a favorite of all who knew him. He enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories about the way things used to be in the valley. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, and he had a happy and positive outlook on life. His family and friends were very lucky to have had someone like Babe to love.
The family includes his daughter, Roberta Patten, of Williamstown, Mass.; three grandchildren, Michael Patten, Andrea Patten and Suzanne Piazza; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Wanda C. Pennett, in 1988.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Mountains Church in North Conway. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Mountains Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund or the donor's charity of choice.

CASCO, Maine - Bertha Perry, 96, formerly of Lovell, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the Country Village Assisted Living Center.
She was born and educated in Westwood, N.J., the daughter of Michael and Augusta Gesbrecht. She lived in Lovell for 35 years.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Frederick Raute and Louis Perry, and a son, Robert Raute. She is survived by a daughter, Caroline Kleister, of Middletown, N.Y.; one son, Fred Raute, of Wurtsboro, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visiting hours will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. Burial will be in No. 4 Cemetery in Lovell.

WOLFEBORO - Karen Morrill-Nason, 44, of Haines Hill Road in Wolfeboro, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
She was born May 11, 1957, in the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C., the daughter of Arthur and Michelle (Resvard) Morrill. She attended school in Texas and California.
Karen is survived by her husband, Walter D. Nason, of Wolfeboro; a daughter, Danielle Morrill, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; her father, Arthur Morrill, and his wife, Nancy, of Meredith; her mother, Michelle Davies, and her husband, Cy, of Fountain Ville, Calif.; her brothers, Kerry Morrill, of Gilford, Gavin Macdonald, of Sanbornton, and Scott Davies, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; and a sister, Shelly Costantini, of Hudson. She is also survived by her grandparents, Mrs. Nell Davies, of California, and Mildred Hood, of Meredith, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home on Route 28 in Wolfeboro. Burial will be private.
