Donald L. Helton

NOTTINGHAM - Donald L. Helton, 74, of 5 Little John Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on Aug. 16, 1928, and served in the United States Navy.

Donald was a self-employed builder in the Seacoast area for many years.

He was an avid Winston Cup race fan and loved country music.

Besides his wife of 52 years, Gwen (Matthews) Helton, survivors include four sons, Bruce Helton of Bow, Donald Helton of Madbury, Duane Helton of Northwood, and Hugh Matthews of Barrington; a daughter, Vicky Helton of Corinth, Texas; six grandchildren, Amy L. Helton of Burlington, Vt., Katie J. Helton of Durham, Ty Helton of Madbury, Melanie Robertson of North Carolina, Elizabeth S. Helton of Northwood, and Julia R. Helton of Northwood.

HELTON - Donald L. Helton, 74, of 5 Little John Rd, Nottingham, N.H., died Dec. 18, 2002. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Flowers will be accepted. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood-Funeral Home.

Mary "Ruth" Lawrence

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Mary "Ruth" Lawrence, 94, of 114 Brave Boat Harbor Road, died Dec. 16, 2002, at St. Andre’s Health Care, in Biddeford after a short illness.

She was born in Burlington, Vt., on April 23, 1908, the daughter of the late Arthur and Louise (Miller) LaVallee.

She lived for many years in Holyoke, Mass., and Burlington, Vt., before moving to Kittery Point in 1939.

She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Annex during WWII. She also worked as a cook for private families in the area, and also worked many years in area shoe shops. She was a life member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCWU), AFL-CIO-CLC.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and sharing with family and friends.

She was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Kittery.

Mrs. Lawrence was predeceased by her husband Walter O. Lawrence, one brother and six sisters.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sheila Louise Chapman of Kittery Point, and Alison Inges and husband Durwood of Norfolk, Va.; a step-daughter, Gwen Miller of Santee, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Samantha Zdrojewski and husband Robert of Goose Creek/Charleston, S.C., Walter Chapman of Rockland, Shawn Chapman of Cushing, Cindy Friend of Norfolk, Va., Carol Baker and husband Stephen of Norfolk, Va., Bruce and Billy Ruttenberg of Cameron, Mo., Sharon Sigwardt and husband Pete of Katy, Texas, and Susan Evans and husband Michael of Lakeside, Calif; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Dorothy Foshay of Phoenix, Ariz.; a nephew, John Miller and wife Shirley of Kennebunk; a large number of great-nieces and nephews; and a long-time friend and caregiver, Mona Skidgell of Kittery and St. Cloud, Fla.

There will be no visitation or funeral services. Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. A private burial will be held in the spring.

Frances M. Brymer

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Frances M. (MacKenzie) Brymer, 89, widow of Charles W. Brymer of 425 Union St., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at the Edgewood Centre.

She was born in Canso, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 29, 1913, the daughter of the late Howard G. and Clara (Cole) MacKenzie. Mrs. Brymer resided in Boylston, Nova Scotia, Canada until 1959, when she moved to Portsmouth.

Survivors include a son, C. Elton "Al" Brymer of Portsmouth; a daughter, Mrs. Muriel F. Scott of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

BRYMER - Mrs. Frances M. (MacKenzie) Brymer, 89, of 425 Union St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Saturday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Assembly of God, 200 Chase Drive, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

James C. Greene

SEBASTIAN, Fla. - Mr. James C. Greene of Sebastian, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., lost his battle with melanoma cancer on Dec. 18, 2002.

He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in San Francisco. James (Jim) was a graduate of Lowell High School in San Francisco. He graduated as a business major from the University of California (Go Bears!). While at UC he was a quarterback for the legendary coach "Pappy Waldorf" and played in the Rose Bowl of 1948 and 1949.

He was a Marine Corps officer and combat veteran who served during WWII and the Korean War.

He retired from the 3M Company after 30 years, and continued his career as founder and CEO of VerCorn Inc., in Portsmouth, for seven years. He also served as President of Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., where he hosted the PGA Tournament of 1976. In Sebastian, James was active in TROA, Rotary and Animal Rescue. He took great pride in mentoring at the Pelican Island Elementary School. Additionally he volunteered as a coach of the Sebastian Sharks. He golfed regularly at Sand Ridge and Sebastian, local golf courses.

He is survived by his loving and lovely wife of 23 wonderful years, Shirley Greene, and with great pride, daughters, Laurel Pennebaker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Meredith Greene of Fairbanks, Ark., and Holly Smith of Seattle; stepson and stepdaughter, Mark McClure of Shorewood, Minn., and Lisa Searsey of Ashville, N.C.; six wonderful grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

GREENE - Mr. James C. Greene of Sebastian, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth, died Dec. 18, 2002. Private services for his family will be held at a future date in St. Paul, Minn. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery (TBA). Alexander C. Tullis

PORTSMOUTH - Alexander C. Tullis, 81, widower of Emma (Packard) Tullis, of 125 Blue Heron Drive, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Methuen, Mass., on Dec. 1, 1921, the son of the late Neil C. and Jane (Crookston) Tullis. Mr. Tullis served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a machinist for the Davis & Furber Machine Company, for over 20 years. Mr. Tullis was a former deacon of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in North Andover, Mass.; a life member of the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, VFW of Portsmouth; life member of Piscataqua Chapter #4 DAV of Newington; life member of Sub Vets of WWII of New Hampshire; former secretary and treasurer of the North Andover (Mass.) Board of Trades; and was a former Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 81 in North Andover.

Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Tullis Morse of Haverhill, Mass. and Elizabeth Morgan of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a daughter, Kathleen Tullis Oullette of Methuen.

TULLIS - Mr. Alexander C. Tullis, 81, of 125 Blue Heron Drive, Portsmouth, died Dec. 20, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, National Council, PO Box 152079, Irving, TX, 75015-2079. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Sally S. DeLuccia

ELIOT, Maine - Sally S. DeLuccia, 69, of 392 Goodwin Road, formerly of Dover, N.H., died Friday at her home following a period of failing health.

Born in Albany, N.Y., she was a daughter of Gordon and Helen (McIntyre) Stevens. She attended schools in Beacon, N.Y.

She and her husband made their home here in the Seacoast for more than 30 years, living in the New Hampshire communities of Exeter, Rye and Dover. She was the owner of Antiques of Eliot and enjoyed her business and the people that she was involved with while operating it. She enjoyed attending antique auctions and hand-picking the items she would offer in her shop.

Sally enjoyed her family; spending time with her sister, brother-in-law and other family members in Florida was a favorite part of her year. Her greatest pleasure was having everyone just relax and have a nice meal together. She was fortunate, for the last 10 years to have her shop located next to her son’s business in Eliot; this allowed her to spend a great deal of time enjoying her family and her business.

She is survived by her son, Joe DeLuccia of Rochester, N.H., and her sister, Jean Weed, of Florida.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Charles DeLuccia, in 1992.

DELUCCIA - Sally S. DeLuccia, 69, of 392 Goodwin Road in Eliot, Maine, died on Friday at her home following a period of failing health. Services will be private. Donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Frances M. Brymer

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Frances M. (MacKenzie) Brymer, 89, of 425 Union Street, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. Rev. Linda Downing of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth officiated. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev.

Downing. Bearers were George Hayden, John Hamilton, John Hamilton, Jr., Fred Nelson, Al Valados, Nelson Horton and Fred Horton.

Bruce R. Coburn

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Bruce R. Coburn, 45, of 27 Goss Road was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by Steve Coburn and Tom Bridge. Following cremation, private burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Stuart Libby

YORK - A funeral for Capt. Stuart Libby, of York Maine, who died on Dec. 11, 2002, in York, was held on Dec. 16, 2002, at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery. The service began with a memorial program offered by the York Elks Lodge No. 2788 of York, with the following members taking part: Neil Brown, exalted ruler; Mark Briley, esteemed leading knight; Robert Keefe, lecturing knight; Steve Morse, inner guard; Barbara Dunham, loyal knight; Jack Kline, esquire, and John Tarley as chaplain.

A Service was also performed by Squadron No. 6 Sons of the American Legion, Frank Booma Post No. 6 of Portsmouth, represented by Post Commander Don Poisson, Squadron Commander Drew Hogan, Past Commander Les Peters, Finance Officer Gene Schmitz, Adjutant Richard Brooks, members Bernie Lowe and George Drew, as well as Sheila Brooks, 2nd vice president of the Auxiliary Unit No. 6.

The funeral was officiated by the Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Stu’s daughter, Meeghan Baumler, spoke of many fond memories of her father, and how much the family, friends and fellow commercial fisherman in attendance meant to him and their family. She offered special thanks to the many kind people in their life, especially the staff of York Hospital. All were invited for a time of refreshment and sharing following the service at the York Elks Lodge in York Maine. Services were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Joseph E. Camire Sr.

EXETER - Joseph E. Camire Sr., 88, of Arbor Street, died Dec. 21, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Exeter, the son of the late Louis and Vitaline Camire. A native and lifelong resident of Exeter, he was employed for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter, where he served as an usher for the 9 a.m. Mass for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Zita L. (Wilbur) Camire of Exeter; four sons, John Camire of Exeter, Lawrence Camire of Exeter, Joseph Camire Jr. of Raymond, and Richard Curry of Raynham, Mass.; seven daughters, Stephanie Camire of Exeter, Nancy Brunet of South Hampton, Eleanor Kimball of Falmouth, Maine, Joanne Archer of Epping, Ruth Welch of Alfred, Maine, Irene Cote of Exeter, and Judith Richards of Rochester; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Yvonne Grenier of Manchester.

CAMIRE - Joseph E. Camire Sr., 88, of Exeter, died Dec. 21, 2002. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at St. Michael’s Church, located on the corner of Front and Lincoln streets in Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable, or donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice.

Melvin H. "Mel" Clark

NORTH HAMPTON - Melvin H. "Mel" Clark, 64, of 7 Post Road, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, after a brief illness.

He was born in Exeter on April 25, 1938, the son of the late Morris and Rinda (Locke) Clark, and served in the U.S. Army.

He owned and operated Mel’s Truck Sales in North Hampton for 45 years before selling the business in 1999.

In addition to his wife, Patricia (Regan) Clark, family members include his daughter, Kathleen M. Stimon and her husband Bruce of Kensington; and a grandson, Clark S. A. Stimon.

CLARK - Melvin H. "Mel" Clark, of 7 Post Road, North Hampton, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Sandra L. Annis

HAMPTON - Sandra L. Annis, 65, of Cusack Road, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at her son’s home in Hampton after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., on July 4, 1937, the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Bessie M. (Willey) Strong.

Raised in Swampscott, Mass., she graduated from Swampscott High School and also from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Mrs. Annis worked as a bacteriologist and lab technician at the former Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass., for 25 years retiring in 2000.

She moved to Hampton in 1975 coming from Georgetown, Mass. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton, an active member of the Merrimack Valley Chorus, was a Seacoast Hospice volunteer and enjoyed traveling and singing.

She was the wife of the late Richard F. Annis, who died in 1997.

Family members include three sons, Gary R. Annis and his wife Joan of Hampton, Mark R. Annis of York, Maine, Craig J. Annis and his wife Danielle of Portsmouth and four grandchildren, Timothy, Emily, Margaret and Dailyn.

ANNIS - Sandra L. Annis, 65, of Cusack Road, Hampton, died Dec. 23, 2002. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home, Thursday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dennis J. O’Neil

YORK, Maine – Dennis J. O’Neil, 63, of 16 Winterbrook Drive died Sunday, Dec. 22 at York Hospital.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on July 12, 1939, the son of John F. and Mildred (Murphy) O’Neil. He attended St. Paul’s School and was a graduate of Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge.

Mr. O’Neil was superintendent of the Superior Court buildings for 35 years.

He had worked at the Woburn and Cambridge courthouses for many years and spent the last 13 years of his career at the Newburyport courthouse, retiring in June 2001.

Dennis was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He was a member of the American Legion Post 56 of York and was a volunteer cameraman for the town of York selectmen meetings. Before moving to York 19 years ago, he resided in Arlington, Mass., and was a founding officer of the Irish-American Club of Arlington.

Survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Marilyn (Ernst) O’Neil of York; one brother, William Murphy of Marietta, Ga., and one sister, Barbara Cooney of Cambridge, Mass.; several nephews, nieces, grand and great nieces and nephews

O’NEIL – Dennis J. O’Neil, of Winterbrook Drive, York, Maine, died Dec. 22 in York. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27 in St. Christopher Church, York St., York. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

John R. Marston

ALTON - John R. Marston 72, died of cancer at home on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002.

Born in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 7, 1930, he was the son of Charles and Winnifred Marston of Rochester.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 as a cryptographer.

He was employed by Textron of Farmington for 26 years. He retired in 1992.

He was predeceased by a brother, Charles E. Marston of Lynn, Mass.

Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Virginia (Lewis) Marston of Alton; two brothers, Henry Marston of Strafford and James T. Marston of Brooksville, Fla.; one sister, Marjorie Karam of Bow; two sons, Mark W. Marston of Middleton, and John J. Marston of N.Y.; a daughter, Melia (Marston) Michaud of Rye; two stepsons, Gregory Scott Eldridge of Sanbornton and Anthony Carl Eldridge of New Durham, and one stepdaughter, Trina Jean Bragg of Alton.

MARSTON - John R. Marston, 72, died of cancer at his Alton home on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002. There are no calling hours or service. A private service will be held by the familyat a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to VNA Hospice, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Mr. Andrew Maher Anderson

STRATHAM - Mr. Andrew Maher Anderson, 82, of 29 Lovell Road, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on July 16, 1920, the son of the late Henry C. Anderson and Eileen (Maher) Anderson Riley. Mr. Anderson served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for local contractors before retiring from Sprague Energy in Newington in 1985.

Mr. Anderson was a former volunteer for the Newington Fire Department. Besides his wife, Gwendolyn (de Rochemont) Anderson, survivors include four children, Andrew M. Anderson and his wife Noreen of Stratham, Susan L. Anderson of Stratham, Laura J. Futterrer and her husband Robert of Berwick, Maine, and James L. Anderson and his wife Betty of Lamonie, Maine; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter Jessica Lynn Anderson on Sept. 19, 1996.

ANDERSON - Andrew Maher Anderson, 82, of 29 Lovell Road, Stratham, N.H., died Dec. 21, 2002. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St, Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801-4946.
