Irene B. (Gosselin) Des Rochers

NEW LONDON - Irene B. (Gosselin) Des Rochers, 83, of Fenwood Commons, New London, formerly of Portsmouth, died at Clough Center in New London, Dec. 29, 2002.

She was wonderfully cared for by the New London Hospice and the staff at Clough Center during her final months of life.

She was born in Erving, Mass., on Jan. 20, 1919, a daughter of Joseph and Carry (Boushey) Gosselin. Irene grew up in Holyoke, Mass., where she met and married her husband, Raymond G. Des Rochers. The couple spent most of their life in Portsmouth where Raymond was an engineer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Irene loved to cook and to entertain friends at her home. Living in Portsmouth, with the beach nearby, her home was a favorite spot for family from Massachusetts to visit. She cooked up many a lobster bake with all the fixings each summer for visiting guests.

She was a homemaker who took part in many volunteer activities at the local hospital and through other community groups. Irene was named Mother of the Year in 1961 by the Portsmouth Herald for opening her home to an exchange student from Africa who attended Portsmouth High School.

Both Irene and her husband, Raymond, had an adventurous spirit and a love of traveling. So promptly upon his retirement in 1967, they sold their house in Portsmouth, bought an Airstream trailer and started traveling across the country. Initially thinking they would travel for only a year or two and then settle down again, their wanderings lasted almost 20 years. They stayed in Melbourne, Fla., during the coldest of the winter months, and then headed out as soon as the weather started to warm. They had favorite fishing spots and friends from one end of the country to the other.

Irene’s granddaughter, Terri Garcia of Littleton, remembers how her grandparents took each of the five grandchildren traveling with them the summer that the grandchild turned eight. Terri was the oldest and got to take the first trip. Each of the five children has wonderful memories of their summer on the road with Grandma and Grandpa. Beth Little, of Summit, N.J. told of how Irene kept booklets of songs in the car and how they would sing for hours (not too well but with spirit) as they traveled through Colorado and Idaho on her trip with them.

Irene was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, on April 19, 1990. She stayed on in Florida for a few years, but failing eyesight soon made it impossible for her to drive. She moved back to New Hampshire, settling in New London to be near to her family.

Mrs. Des Rochers is survived by two daughters, Lorette Dean of New London, and Alice O’Traynor of Lyman; five grandchildren, Terri Garcia of Littleton, N.H., Charles (Chip) Dean of West Islip, N.Y., Jim Dean of Califon, N.J., Beth Little of Summit, N.J., and Tom Keane of San Diego, Calif.; six great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy. The always found special toys and tea parties awaiting them when they went to visit their "Meme" She is also survived by her sister, Doris King of Southwick, Mass.
